On an October evening, use Cassiopeia’s familiar W- or M-shaped pattern to find nearby Perseus, then scan the sky between them for the Double Cluster. Under dark skies it may look like a faint patch to the unaided eye; binoculars make its two star-rich groups easier to separate.
Where is the Double Cluster in Perseus?
The Double Cluster is the close pair h Persei and chi Persei, also cataloged as NGC 869 and NGC 884. It lies in Perseus near Cassiopeia. [NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day; EarthSky]
- Find Cassiopeia’s distinctive W- or M-shaped pattern.
- Look toward Perseus, the neighboring constellation, and scan the region between the two.
- If the cluster is low or hidden by your horizon, wait for it to climb higher before searching again.
There is no single best clock time for every observer: latitude, date, horizon obstructions, and sky brightness all affect when and how clearly the pair appears. EarthSky describes the Double Cluster as circumpolar at mid-northern latitudes, meaning it stays above the horizon through the night there. Farther south in the Northern Hemisphere, clear autumn and winter nights are especially useful, but its seasonal visibility is more limited. [EarthSky]
Can you see the Double Cluster without binoculars?
Possibly. From a dark location, the pair can appear to the unaided eye as a faint patch rather than two clearly resolved clusters. NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day notes that it is visible without optics from dark locations and gives its apparent span as about 1.5 degrees—roughly three full Moons across. That naked-eye view is not guaranteed: light pollution, haze, clouds, and local obstructions can make the patch difficult or impossible to pick out. Try first without equipment under the darkest clear sky available, then use optics if you want to distinguish the two groupings.
What binoculars help you see the Double Cluster?
Binoculars are a practical way to reveal the two separate, star-rich groups while keeping a broad view of the sky. A 10×50 binocular is one possible choice, not a requirement or a tested best option. Whatever binoculars you use, steadiness matters: brace them against a stable support to reduce shaking and make the stars easier to inspect. [Sky & Telescope]

Binoculars or a telescope?
Choose based on the view you want rather than assuming one instrument is universally better. Binoculars are portable and provide a broad view; a wide-field telescope can also show both clusters together, while the detail it reveals depends on its optical setup.

- SIMPLE SETUP, SMOOTH TRACKING: Features a manual altazimuth mount with altitude slow motion adjustment with a sliding rod. Follow the on-screen arrows to your target; when the bullseye turns green, you can view it clearly through the eyepiece.
- 114MM REFLECTOR WITH IMPRESSIVE VIEWS: The 4.5" Newtonian reflector with high-reflectivity coatings delivers sharp, vivid views of the Moon, planets like Jupiter and Saturn, and deep-sky favorites like the Orion Nebula and Andromeda Galaxy.
How far away are the clusters?
NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day gives an approximate distance of 7,000 light-years and an age of 13 million years for each cluster. EarthSky’s October 2026 article gives a different rounded distance estimate, about 7,500 light-years. These are source-specific approximations, not a single precise measurement to combine.
