Windows 11 can use a picture, a slideshow, a theme, or Windows Spotlight as the desktop background. Those modes do not all keep the image in the same place, and Windows often displays a generated cache file instead of the original photo.
Start by checking the active mode at Start → Settings → Personalization → Background. Then use the method below that matches your setup. If you only need a copy of the image currently visible, the TranscodedWallpaper cache is usually the quickest option. If you need the original filename and folder, check the classic Desktop Background window, the registry, or your theme’s source folder.
1. Check which background mode Windows 11 is using
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Go to Personalization → Background.
- Look at Personalize your background. It will show Picture, Solid color, Slideshow, or Windows spotlight.
The page may show the selected picture or recent backgrounds, but it does not always reveal the complete file path. A solid-color background has no image file to locate. For the other modes, continue with the matching method below.

For a normal Picture background, or for a slideshow configured from a folder, the classic Desktop Background window can show the source location.

- Press Win+R to open the Run dialog.
- Enter this command exactly:
shell:::{ED834ED6-4B5A-4bfe-8F11-A626DCB6A921} -Microsoft.PersonalizationpageWallpaper- Press Enter.
- In the classic Desktop Background window, inspect the selected picture or slideshow source.
This is generally the fastest way to identify a picture that you selected yourself. It is not reliable for Windows Spotlight. Also, with a slideshow, the window may identify the source folder or a selected image rather than the precise file being displayed at that instant. The displayed file can change when the slideshow interval elapses.
3. Read the last recorded wallpaper path in the Registry
Windows records a wallpaper path for the current user in the Registry. This can expose the original file path, although it may instead point to a generated cache copy.
- Type
regeditinto Windows Search. - Open Registry Editor. Approve the User Account Control prompt if asked.
- Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERControl PanelDesktop- Find the string value named Wallpaper.
- Read its Data field. If the Registry Editor column is truncated, double-click Wallpaper to view the complete path.
Do not change the value merely to inspect it. The path may point to a file that has been moved or deleted, while Windows continues showing a cached copy. It can also point to TranscodedWallpaper or a file under the Themes cache. In that situation, the value identifies what Windows is using, not necessarily the original image or its original filename.
4. Decode the active background path with PowerShell
Windows PowerShell can decode the TranscodedImageCache Registry value and print the path Windows is using for the background.
- Open Windows PowerShell from Start. Standard PowerShell is sufficient; you do not need PowerShell 7.
- Run the first command:
$TIC=(Get-ItemProperty 'HKCU:Control PanelDesktop' TranscodedImageCache -ErrorAction Stop).TranscodedImageCache- Run the second command:
[System.Text.Encoding]::Unicode.GetString($TIC) -replace '(.+)([A-Z]:[0-9a-zA-Z\])+','$2'The output is the path Windows has stored for the active background. If running both commands as a pasted block fails, run them one at a time in the same PowerShell window.
Do not assume that the result is the original photograph. It may be a path to TranscodedWallpaper or another generated copy, with no useful extension or original source-folder relationship.

5. Copy the current wallpaper cache
If your goal is to save what is currently displayed rather than recover the original file, inspect Windows’ wallpaper cache.

- Open File Explorer.
- Enter this path in the address bar:
%AppData%MicrosoftWindowsThemes- Locate the file named
TranscodedWallpaper. - Copy it to another folder, such as Documents.
- Rename the copy to something such as
CurrentWallpaper.jpg.
The cache commonly has no extension. Renaming the active file in place can interfere with the background, so copy it first. Adding .jpg to the copy normally lets image applications open it, even though the original cache filename has no extension.
If you cannot see the folder, either paste the path directly into File Explorer or enable hidden items with View → Show → Hidden items. AppData is hidden by default.
6. Look in theme folders
If the background came from a theme, the source images may be stored in the theme’s local folder.
Check:
%LocalAppData%MicrosoftWindowsThemesOpen the relevant theme folder and look for a DesktopBackground subfolder. The image set may be there with its original extensions and filenames.

C:WindowsResourcesThemes
C:WindowsWebC:WindowsWeb contains built-in Windows wallpaper resources. Finding a similar image there does not prove that it is the wallpaper currently applied; custom pictures, themes, slideshows, and Spotlight can use other locations or generated caches.
7. Find a Windows Spotlight background
Spotlight is harder to trace because its cached files normally have no extensions, and the cache contains more than one type of asset. A commonly used per-user location is:
%LocalAppData%PackagesMicrosoft.Windows.ContentDeliveryManager_cw5n1h2txyewyLocalStateAssets- Paste the path into File Explorer.
- Copy likely candidate files to a separate folder.
- Add
.jpgto the copies and open them to identify the landscape or portrait image you want.
The Assets folder can contain thumbnails, icons, images for other screen sizes, and older Spotlight downloads. It is not a definitive record of the image currently on the desktop. On some Windows 11 installations, the active Spotlight image is represented after application by the TranscodedWallpaper file in:

8. Check recent wallpaper history
Windows keeps paths for recently used backgrounds in another Registry key.
- Open Registry Editor with
regedit. - Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerWallpapers- Inspect values such as BackgroundHistoryPath0, BackgroundHistoryPath1, and similar entries.
These are history entries, not a guaranteed record of the image currently visible. They can nevertheless help locate a picture that was recently applied, especially if the current Wallpaper value points to a cache file.

Which method should you use?

What to do when the original image was moved or deleted
The original path can remain in the Registry even after the source file disappears. If Windows still displays the background, copy TranscodedWallpaper from %AppData%MicrosoftWindowsThemes before changing the setting. That cache may preserve a usable copy of the image even though the original file is unavailable.
When Windows keeps restoring an old wallpaper
Some Windows 11 users have reported that Windows regenerates TranscodedWallpaper and restores a previous image. A reported cleanup sequence is:
- Open Registry Editor.
- Go to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerWallpapers- Delete the
BackgroundHistoryPathXXXentries. - Open:
%AppData%MicrosoftWindowsThemes- Delete the
TranscodedWallpaperfile or files and theCachedFilesfolder. - Restart Windows.
Back up important Registry data and wallpaper files before performing cleanup. The reported fix specifically calls for a restart; shutting down and then powering the computer on is not necessarily the same operation for this issue.
When a work or school PC controls the wallpaper
On a managed computer, Group Policy or device management may enforce a desktop background. Microsoft’s Desktop Policy CSP supports a Desktop Wallpaper policy for Windows 11 version 21H2 (build 22000) and later, and the policy can specify a fully qualified wallpaper path.
If your selected image keeps being replaced, or Personalization will not retain a change, contact the administrator or check the organization’s policy rather than repeatedly deleting cache files. A policy-enforced background can override the user’s selection.
FAQ
Where is the current Windows 11 wallpaper stored?
A commonly used cache copy is %AppData%MicrosoftWindowsThemesTranscodedWallpaper. It usually has no extension. This is often the image Windows is displaying, but it may not be the original file selected by the user.

Is the wallpaper always in C:WindowsWeb?
No. C:WindowsWeb contains built-in Windows resources, not every currently applied wallpaper. Custom pictures, themes, slideshows, and Spotlight can use different folders or generated cache files.
Why does TranscodedWallpaper have no .jpg extension?
It is a Windows-generated cache file, and Windows commonly stores it without an image extension. Copy it to another folder and rename the copy with an extension such as .jpg; do not rename the active file in place.
Can I identify the exact current image in a slideshow?
Not always. The slideshow may change between checks, and the Registry may record the source folder or a recently selected image rather than the file visible at that precise moment.

How do I find a Windows Spotlight image?
Check the copied TranscodedWallpaper file first, then inspect %LocalAppData%PackagesMicrosoft.Windows.ContentDeliveryManager_cw5n1h2txyewyLocalStateAssets. Copy candidate files elsewhere and add .jpg to the copies. The Assets folder contains thumbnails and other cached files, so it is not a definitive current-image list.
The Bottom Line
For a manually selected picture, press Win+R and open the classic Desktop Background window. For the path Windows last recorded, inspect HKEY_CURRENT_USERControl PanelDesktopWallpaper or decode TranscodedImageCache with PowerShell. If you simply need a usable copy of the visible background, copy %AppData%MicrosoftWindowsThemesTranscodedWallpaper and add .jpg to the copy. Treat Registry and cache paths as working locations—not guaranteed proof of the original image file.
