The Genesis Configuration does not use one universal symbol code. In Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: Revival, the correct shape is determined by the specific room: inspect the nearby relief, diagram, painting, plaque, or moving mechanism, retrieve any required item, and reshape the box until it matches that encounter’s target. A solution copied from another gate or shrine can be completely wrong.
What the Genesis Configuration symbols actually mean
The Genesis Configuration is both a puzzle box and a power source. The official PlayStation Blog preview describes it as central to the game’s puzzle design and shows it being used to channel offensive powers, realign walkways, and open environmental routes. Its appearance is therefore not a fixed “password” made from symbols. The box changes form to perform the action a particular puzzle requires.
That distinction explains why screenshots from one lock often fail at another. A relief on a statue gate, a diagram on a desk, and a wheel that moves a walkway are different kinds of clues. Treat the visible target in front of Aidan as the answer for that room, rather than searching for a code that applies everywhere.
“We use the Genesis Configuration – a puzzle box – at the centre of things,” Assistant Game Director Vid Rajin said in the PlayStation Blog preview published August 19, 2026.

The reliable solving method
Use this order every time you encounter a box-related puzzle. It prevents the two most common mistakes: manipulating the box before finding the clue and trying to reuse an earlier configuration.
- Survey the entire room. Walk around the mechanism and inspect walls, statues, desks, paintings, plaques, floor markings, and any object that looks deliberately arranged. A clue can be beside the lock rather than on the box itself.
- Identify the target. Decide whether the room is showing a silhouette or relief to match, a diagram that explains an arrangement, or a device whose movement is controlled by the box. Do not assume every unusual marking is a symbol sequence.
- Check whether something is missing. Statue gates may remain inactive until you recover and return a body part. The preview specifically demonstrates gates associated with a hand or another missing part, including a tongue.
- Place the recovered item. Return the required object to the statue or mechanism before attempting to finalize the box shape. If the gate does not react, verify that the item is seated in the intended location rather than merely present in your inventory.
- Reshape the box toward the local relief. Compare the box’s faces and outline with the target immediately in front of you. Match the overall silhouette and the visible face arrangement, not a remembered pattern from a previous encounter.
- Test the result and observe the room. A correct configuration should produce the expected environmental response: a gate, route, walkway, or other mechanism changes. If nothing happens, return to the clue and check orientation, prerequisite items, and whether you are solving the right object.
- Use a screenshot when the written description is insufficient. The campaign solution material uses images for some exact orientations. Its prose can identify the intended pattern, but an image may be necessary to reproduce which face points in which direction.
First decide what kind of puzzle you are facing
Before looking for symbols, classify the encounter. This tells you what evidence matters and what a successful result should do.

The last four examples matter because they can look like symbol puzzles while requiring a different response. If the room gives you a diagram, moving architecture, or a route, solve that environmental instruction instead of forcing the box into a shape that belongs to a statue gate.

Find the reference surface
Search for a raised carving, inset outline, painted profile, or other deliberately distinct shape near the lock. Stand far enough away to see the entire outline, then move closer to identify which faces or protrusions are part of it. A partial view can make two orientations appear identical.
Separate target shape from decoration
Statues and shrine surfaces may contain ornamental marks that are not part of the configuration. Use the central relief or the area that clearly corresponds to the box. If the box fits visually but the mechanism remains inert, inspect the surrounding statue for a missing item or a second interaction.
Compare orientation, not just outline
A box can have the right general silhouette while presenting the wrong face toward the relief. Rotate your view and compare each visible face, notch, point, and internal division. Campaign walkthrough images are especially important here because text descriptions do not always preserve every face direction.

Confirm the room’s response
The environment is the final check. A gate opening, a newly available path, or another designed reaction confirms that the local target was correct. If the box looks right but nothing changes, treat that as evidence that a prerequisite or orientation is still wrong, not as proof that the game is broken.
Statue gates: recover the item before matching the box
The most important prerequisite rule is that some gates are two-stage puzzles. The preview shows a statue gate that requires a missing body part and then a Genesis Configuration shape associated with the restored relief. The missing object is not optional decoration; until it is returned, the box may have no valid response.
Hand and tongue examples
Among the demonstrated cases are a hand statue and a tongue-related statue. The campaign solution list also includes a head statue. Their exact face orientations are presented visually in third-party walkthrough material, so use the accompanying screenshot for the final placement instead of relying on a short text label such as “point left” or “cross shape.”
- Search the surrounding route for the body part or other item that completes the statue.
- Return to the statue and place the item in its matching location.
- Inspect the newly active relief or target surface.
- Adjust the box to that specific target, checking every visible face.
- Activate or test the gate only after both the item and the configuration are in place.
If you have already recovered the hand, head, or tongue but the gate still does not react, verify that you are at the corresponding statue. A body part obtained for one encounter does not establish a universal configuration for every statue.
The five mandatory shape puzzles listed by the campaign guide
A third-party campaign solution guide published October 8, 2026 lists five mandatory Genesis Configuration shape puzzles. It is useful as a checklist, but it is not an official developer solution set, and its exact orientations are conveyed partly through reproduced images. Use the names below to recognize the encounters, then consult the guide’s image for the final visual alignment.
Sunny’s pillar
This is identified as a pillar configuration in the campaign walkthrough. Look for the pillar’s own relief or target rather than applying a shape from a later statue. Because the guide’s orientation is image-dependent, compare the screenshot with the pillar in your game before confirming the box.

The hand statue
The hand statue is one of the body-part gates. Locate and return the required hand first, then use the associated relief to determine the box’s shape. The item prerequisite and the local relief are both part of the solution.
The head statue
The head statue is listed separately from the hand and tongue encounters. Treat it as its own configuration. The campaign guide’s image should be read as a visual reference for the face orientation, not as a sequence that can be entered at another shrine.
The tongue statue
The tongue statue follows the same two-stage logic when the missing part is required: restore the statue, then match the Genesis Configuration to the newly relevant target. Do not stop after placing the item; the box alignment is a separate step.
The factory shrine
The factory shrine is the fifth mandatory shape puzzle in the third-party list. Its industrial setting does not make it interchangeable with the pillar or statue configurations. Identify the shrine’s own relief and use the guide image only to resolve orientation details that the text cannot express.
These five names are a campaign checklist, not evidence of five universal symbol codes. The official preview demonstrates selected puzzle designs, while the third-party guide supplies broader campaign coverage. Neither source establishes that every optional encounter is included or that later patches cannot change a configuration.
Environmental puzzles that are not symbol-code locks
Wheel-operated walkway
The official preview shows the box being used to turn a large wheel and realign walkways. Here, the meaningful feedback is spatial: platforms or paths line up so Aidan can proceed. Watch the route while operating the wheel and stop when the walkable surfaces form a continuous path. Searching for a statue-like silhouette in this scene wastes time because the objective is alignment of the environment.

Sliding picture lock
A diagram on a nearby desk supplies the clue for a sliding picture lock. Read the diagram before moving the pieces. Treat it as an instruction for the picture arrangement, not as a Genesis Configuration code copied from another room. If the image seems ambiguous, return to the desk and compare the complete diagram with the lock’s movable sections.

The looping house
The preview describes a sequence in which turning back changes the setting. Progress depends on understanding how the space responds to your movement. If the house appears to reset or transform, test the route deliberately and note what changed after you turned around. The solution is a spatial rule, not a fixed set of symbols.
Chatterer chase route
The preview also shows a route clue for the Chatterer chase. In a chase, prioritize the indicated path and environmental landmarks over stopping to search for a box silhouette. The clue tells you where to move; it is not evidence of a universal Genesis Configuration sequence.
How to use walkthrough screenshots without misreading them
Image-based guides are valuable for this puzzle because a written shape name can omit the direction of a face. Use screenshots as a comparison aid rather than as a blind code.
- Match the encounter name and location first. A picture for the factory shrine cannot be assumed to show the hand statue.
- Check the camera angle. A screenshot may show a face that is hidden from your current position.
- Compare the box’s complete silhouette, not a single mark.
- Look for a prerequisite item in the screenshot or nearby description.
- Account for visual differences caused by lighting, camera position, or a partially completed interaction.
- If the image and the in-game relief disagree, trust the local relief and verify that the walkthrough is for the same encounter.
The iTechGuides and Grenadier walkthroughs are third-party references. Grenadier’s article reproduces imagery credited to GamesRadar+. They can help identify the intended orientation, but the official developer and PlayStation Blog material is the stronger authority for how the box functions and for the examples shown in the preview.

The box looks correct, but nothing happens
- Check whether the gate needs a hand, head, tongue, or another missing item first.
- Confirm that the item was returned to the statue, not merely collected.
- Recheck the face orientation against the local relief.
- Make sure you are interacting with the intended gate, shrine, or pillar.
You cannot tell which shape the clue indicates
- Inspect the room from multiple angles and look for a second relief or diagram.
- Move closer to distinguish the target outline from decorative carving.
- Use a screenshot for the named campaign encounter, while matching its location to your room.
- Do not infer a shape from a symbol seen in an unrelated lock.
A copied online solution does not match your game
Verify the encounter name, room, and game version context. The available campaign list is third-party, and the PlayStation Blog preview and October 8 campaign guide do not establish a complete official checklist or document every later patch. A guide image can also show the opposite camera angle. Reorient your view and compare the target relief directly before concluding that the puzzle is inconsistent.

You keep searching for a code sequence
Stop and classify the puzzle again. The Genesis Configuration can change the environment, power attacks, or match a local shape. The evidence does not establish a single sequence that opens every box-related encounter.
What the available coverage can and cannot confirm
The official PlayStation Blog preview establishes the box’s central role and demonstrates the wheel, statue-gate, picture-lock, looping-house, and chase examples. The developer post published July 16, 2026 identifies Aidan Lynch as the protagonist and explains that Sunny activates the mysterious box, bringing the Cenobites into the story. Those sources explain the mechanic’s purpose, not every campaign answer.
The October 8 campaign guide is the source for the five-name mandatory shape checklist. Its visual references are useful for exact orientation, but they should be treated as third-party guidance rather than official confirmation. The available coverage does not prove that all optional puzzles are catalogued, provide a complete official campaign solution set, or document changes introduced by later patches.
