To find gas stations along a drive, start navigation in the Google Maps mobile app, tap the search or magnifying-glass control, and search for gas stations. To compare prices, separately search gas prices or inspect nearby station listings. Maps can help with both tasks, but its published guidance treats them separately: it does not establish a universal, route-wide cheapest-first list. Check the fuel grade, price age if shown, and detour before choosing a stop.
Find gas stations along your route
The in-navigation search is the most direct way to find a place to refuel without starting over with a new destination. Google’s guidance describes searching for gas stations and other places along the drive; the results are intended to help you find a stop without a major detour. The exact controls and results can vary by app version and region.
- Set your destination. In the Google Maps app, enter where you are going and choose a driving route.
- Start navigation. Begin driving directions so the route is active.
- Open the in-navigation search. Tap the magnifying-glass or search control on the navigation screen.
- Search for fuel. Choose the gas-station category if it appears, or search for gas station. In places where British wording is used, try petrol station.
- Review the candidates. Look at the stations Maps surfaces along or near the drive. Tap a candidate to review it and add it as a stop if it suits your trip.
This search answers “where can I stop along the way?” It does not by itself prove which station has the lowest price. A station that appears on the route may not show a price, and a station with a displayed price may require a meaningful detour.

Compare fuel prices separately
Google’s 2023 published tip describes searching gas prices in Maps to see fuel prices at nearby stations. That is a separate price-lookup action from searching for places during navigation. The guidance does not establish that every user can sort all stations along a planned route from cheapest to most expensive.
- Search Maps for “gas prices.” If that query does not surface useful results, search for stations near your current location or the area where you plan to stop.
- Open individual station listings. Check whether a price is shown and whether the listing identifies the fuel type or grade.
- Compare like with like. Compare the price for the fuel your vehicle actually uses; a lower figure for a different grade is not a saving for your purchase.
- Check the route cost. Compare the likely saving on the amount you expect to buy with the added distance and time to reach the station.
- Choose the stop that works for the trip. If the price or fuel grade is unclear, treat it as unverified rather than assuming it is the cheapest option.
Price availability is not uniform. Google’s 2023 guidance describes nearby price lookup, while later developments and reporting differ by country. The evidence does not establish a global list of supported countries, a universal update schedule, or a guaranteed worldwide route-price sort.
A practical way to compare two candidate stations
Start by comparing the same fuel grade at both stations. Next, look at the displayed prices and any age information in the listings. Then check each station’s location against your route: a lower pump price is only useful if the added drive does not outweigh the difference. Finally, consider how much fuel you expect to buy. A small per-unit price difference matters more when you are buying more fuel, while a long diversion can erase a modest saving.
You do not need to calculate an exact figure if Maps does not give you enough information to do so reliably. Instead, use the comparison as a check: is the lower price clear, does it apply to your fuel, and is the station close enough to make the stop worthwhile? If any answer is uncertain, the apparent bargain may not be a dependable reason to leave your route.

Check the price, grade, and detour before you commit
Confirm the fuel grade
Station listings can be useful only if the displayed figure matches the fuel you need. Check the listing details for the fuel type or grade, and avoid comparing unlike products. If a listing does not make the grade clear, verify it through the station’s own information or at the pump before relying on the figure.
This matters when listings show prices for more than one kind of fuel. A lower price for a fuel your vehicle does not use is not a cheaper option for your trip. Make sure the number you are comparing is for the correct type, rather than assuming all fuel prices shown for a station refer to the same product.

Pay attention to price age where Maps shows it
Price freshness depends on the source and local system. In a 2024 report, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) described Google Maps as displaying a note when a fuel price was more than 24 hours old. That is a finding about the Australian context described in that report—not a rule for every country or every Maps listing. If your listing has no timestamp or age notice, do not infer that the price was recently checked.
A listed amount is a useful comparison signal, not a guarantee of the price you will pay at the pump. If the price has no visible date, appears old, or seems inconsistent with other local information, verify it before making a significant detour. The ACCC also said it could not confirm the source of prices displayed in Google Maps and Waze in the Australian context it examined. That is another reason not to assume that the same data source or update process applies everywhere.
Weigh the detour against the saving
A lower price is not automatically the cheaper choice for the whole trip. Consider how far the station is from your route, the extra driving time, and how much fuel you expect to buy. If the price difference is small, a substantial diversion may outweigh it. Maps’ along-the-drive search can help identify candidate stops, but the driver still needs to assess the route and the purchase.
Check the actual station location rather than relying only on its position in a list. “Along the way” can include a station that is near the route but still requires leaving it, and road layout can make two nearby map points very different in practical driving time. Add a stop only after you have considered the likely diversion and whether the stop fits your schedule.
What UK drivers should know about Maps fuel prices
On 8 October 2026, the UK government announced that Google Maps had started displaying near-real-time petrol and diesel prices using the UK Fuel Finder data. This is a UK-specific development, not evidence that the same price coverage or freshness applies elsewhere.

- Under the UK scheme described in the announcement, stations have been required since February 2026 to report a price change within 30 minutes.
- The government said Fuel Finder data represented around 99% of fuel sold on UK roads at the time of the announcement. That figure describes the data coverage reported for the UK scheme at that time; it is not a guarantee that every station appears in every Maps result.
- The UK government estimated that comparing fuel prices could save an average household with a car around £40 a year. This is an estimate, not a promised saving for an individual driver.
The reporting rule can make the UK price data more timely, but it should not be read as a global Google Maps update promise. The 30-minute requirement applies to stations under the UK Fuel Finder scheme; other places may use different sources, coverage, and update practices. Even in the UK, check the station listing and fuel grade before treating a price as a match for your purchase.

Polly Billington MP, Minister for Energy Consumers, described the launch as a way to make finding lower-cost fuel simpler. Sarah-Jayne Williams, Google’s Director of Global Product Partnerships for Geo, said that integrating Fuel Finder into Google Maps and Waze would give drivers visibility on nearby pump prices and help them make choices for their budgets. Both statements were made in the UK government announcement on 8 October 2026; they describe the intended benefit, not a guarantee that every user will see every price.
If you are in the UK and Maps does not provide enough price detail for your comparison, the government announcement also identified Waze, Petrol Prices, the AA, Confused.com, and RAC Fuel Watch as services using Fuel Finder data. Their inclusion does not establish that their coverage, interfaces, or results are identical.
Do not confuse route efficiency with pump-price savings
Google Maps’ eco-friendly routing estimates fuel or energy efficiency for routes in select regions. Google says the estimate can account for factors such as vehicle type, traffic, hills, and road type. It helps compare the likely efficiency of routes; it is not a fuel-price finder and does not identify the cheapest station.

These are two different decisions: choosing a route that may use less fuel, and choosing a station with a lower price for the fuel you need. A more efficient route does not necessarily pass the least expensive station, and a lower pump price does not necessarily offset a detour. Eco-friendly routing availability is limited to select regions, and its estimate depends on the local conditions and vehicle factors Google uses.
If Maps does not show prices or useful stops
- No price appears: Use the in-navigation search to locate stations, then check their individual listings or verify prices through a local source. Price display is not established as universal.
- Results are not clearly along the route: Review the station’s location against your active route and consider the added distance before adding it as a stop.
- A price is present but the fuel grade is unclear: Do not compare it as if it were the grade your vehicle uses. Look for clearer station information or verify the price directly.
- The price may be stale: Use an age notice if one is shown, but do not assume every region displays one. Confirm uncertain prices before making a detour solely to save money.
- You need a true route-wide cheapest-price comparison: Maps’ documented consumer guidance does not promise a complete route-wide list sorted by price. Use the Maps results as candidates, then compare the relevant local prices and detours yourself.
Google also documents a Routes API and Places API workflow for developers who want to search for places along a planned route in software. That is a developer option, not a step required to find a gas station in the consumer Maps app. For an everyday trip, use the Maps app’s route search and listing details; there is no need to build or use an API workflow.
