The safest way to find a highly rated PS5 horror game is to combine a PS5-specific critic score with its review count, then check player ratings, horror style, and the exact PlayStation edition. On the evidence available, Resident Evil 4 is the stronger action-led choice, while Silent Hill 2 is the better fit for psychological dread and slow-building atmosphere. Neither score is a universal winner, and both snapshots can change.

What “best-reviewed” should mean on PS5

“Best-reviewed” is not the same as “scariest,” “most popular,” or “best for everyone.” A useful starting point is the critic aggregate for the PS5 version, accompanied by the number of reviews behind it. A score based on 126 reviews gives a different level of confidence than one based on a small handful.

Keep three measures separate:

  • Critic aggregate: a numerical summary of professional reviews. Use the platform-specific page, because a PS5 score can differ from a score for another version.
  • Player score: a separate rating from users on the same service. It reflects a different population and can be affected by launch expectations, technical issues, or review-bombing.
  • Store rating: a platform owner’s rating, such as the five-star score shown on the PlayStation Store. Its scale and audience are not directly comparable with a 100-point critic aggregate or a Metacritic user score.

After those numbers, ask whether the game delivers the kind of fear you actually want. A tense, combat-heavy survival horror game can be an excellent choice for one player and a poor choice for someone seeking almost uninterrupted psychological unease.

The two PS5 examples with the clearest review evidence

The following figures are snapshots accessed on October 13, 2026. Metascores, review totals, user counts, store ratings, prices, and catalog availability can change, so treat them as dated evidence rather than permanent rankings.

#1 Best Overall
Resident Evil 4 - PS5
  • Reawaken a Classic – Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original game, now reconstructed using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to deliver realistic visuals and additional narrative depth to the iconic story that was not possible at the time of the original release.
  • Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. Engage in frenzied combat with the Ganados villagers, explore a European village gripped by madness, and solve puzzles to access new areas and collect useful items for Leon and Ashley’s constant struggle to survive.
  • Overwhelming Hordes – Face hordes of rabid enemies that threaten to overwhelm Leon with even more diverse methods of attack than in the original release.
  • Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies. By parrying enemy attacks, you can avoid debilitating damage and evade lunging enemies seeking to grab Leon and hold him in place. Make smart use of scavenged knives to deliver precise finishing moves on vulnerable enemies, and even use the element of surprise to quietly dispatch unsuspecting foes before they break.

Game and PS5 context Critic score snapshot Player-score context Horror profile
Resident Evil 4 (2023 remake; PlayStation lists PS4 and PS5) 93/100 Metascore from 126 critic reviews; classified as Universal Acclaim 9.0/10 Metacritic user score from 9,743 ratings Action-forward survival horror. PlayStation lists Horror, Adventure, and Action.
Silent Hill 2 (2024 remake; PlayStation Store listing) 86/100 Metascore from 105 critic reviews; classified as Generally Favorable 9.0/10 Metacritic user score from 5,122 ratings; PlayStation Store snapshot shows 4.75/5 from 64,942 ratings Psychological horror centered on atmosphere, dread, and an intentionally slower pace.

The scores should not be read as a simple 93-versus-86 contest. Both games show a 9.0 Metacritic user score, but the rating totals differ. The Silent Hill 2 store rating comes from a different service, uses a five-star scale, and represents store owners rather than critics. Those numbers are useful context, not interchangeable measurements.

Why Resident Evil 4 is the action-led reference point

Resident Evil 4 has the higher critic aggregate in this comparison and the larger critic sample. Its official PlayStation genre labels are Horror, Adventure, and Action, which signals a broader, more combat-focused experience than a pure slow-burn. Leon Hurley of GamesRadar described the remake as “full of action and variety that’s as exhilarating now as it ever was.” That is an editorial opinion, not a promise that every player will find it frightening, but it explains why the game suits readers who want scares alongside movement, weapons, exploration, and frequent set pieces.

Why Silent Hill 2 is the atmosphere-led counterpoint

Silent Hill 2 has a lower critic aggregate than Resident Evil 4 in the dated snapshots above, yet it can be the better match for someone who values oppressive mood, ambiguity, and psychological tension over constant combat. Critic descriptions characterize it as psychological horror built around atmosphere and dread. The game therefore belongs on the shortlist even if a reader’s only filter is “highest score”; genre fit can matter more than a seven-point difference on a 100-point scale.

Choose the fear you actually want

Before sorting by numbers, identify your preferred horror mode. Use the questions below as a quick decision framework.

Do you want action or sustained tension?

  • Choose an action-forward survival-horror structure if you want regular encounters, resource decisions, and a brisker rhythm. Resident Evil 4 is the clearest example supported by the available PS5 evidence.
  • Choose an atmosphere-led psychological experience if you prefer uncertainty, environmental storytelling, and dread that accumulates between encounters. Silent Hill 2 is the stronger example.

Do you want a tightly controlled solo mood?

Both examples are primarily solo experiences, so the decision is less about cooperative play and more about how much uninterrupted immersion you want. If you are choosing among a wider PS5 shortlist, mark whether each candidate is designed for solo play, optional cooperation, or competitive multiplayer. A game built around shared sessions may be fun but will not deliver the same isolation as a single-player campaign.

How much combat is too much?

Read the genre description and several review summaries rather than relying on the word “horror.” Some games use horror imagery while functioning mainly as action adventures. Others minimize combat and put more pressure on sound, darkness, navigation, or psychological uncertainty. Decide which balance you want before comparing scores.

A repeatable method for finding highly reviewed PS5 horror games

  1. Start with a PS5-only search. Exclude pages that combine PS4, PS5, PC, and Xbox scores unless the page clearly identifies the PS5 figure. A platform-specific score is the most relevant baseline for a PS5 purchase.
  2. Record the aggregate and review count together. Write down both numbers, not just the headline score. For example, the Resident Evil 4 snapshot is 93 from 126 critic reviews, while Silent Hill 2 is 86 from 105.
  3. Separate critic and player consensus. Add the Metacritic user score and its rating count in a different column. Do not average it with the critic score.
  4. Read the genre and tone description. Tag each candidate as action-forward, atmospheric or psychological, survival-focused, science-fiction or space horror, or multiplayer-oriented. Those categories are useful sorting tools, not quality grades.
  5. Check the official PlayStation listing. Confirm that a PS5 version exists, identify the edition, and read any compatibility notes. A game appearing in a general “best horror” article does not prove that its current edition is available for PS5.
  6. Check the store page immediately before purchase. Prices, discounts, editions, and subscription-catalog access are volatile. Verify the currency and region shown to you rather than copying an old price from an article.
  7. Read negative reviews for deal-breakers. Look for repeated complaints about pacing, motion comfort, controls, difficulty, technical performance, or content that conflicts with your preferences. A high aggregate cannot tell you whether a specific issue will bother you.
  8. Make a shortlist by fit, then use score as a tie-breaker. If two games deliver the same kind of horror, the larger critic sample and higher platform-specific aggregate can break the tie. If their styles differ, choose the style first.

How to interpret the numbers without being misled

Metascore is a snapshot, not a permanent fact

Metacritic’s PS5 page for Resident Evil 4 lists 93/100 from 126 critic reviews, and its Silent Hill 2 page lists 86/100 from 105 critic reviews. Those pages classify the results as Universal Acclaim and Generally Favorable, respectively. New reviews, score adjustments, or page changes can alter the totals, so include the access date whenever you publish or save a comparison.

Review count adds context

A review count does not prove that a game is better, but it shows how broad the aggregate is. Record “93 from 126” rather than “93” alone. If another game has a similar score from far fewer reviews, treat the comparison as less settled.

User scores answer a different question

The two examples each show a 9.0/10 Metacritic user score in the cited snapshots, but Resident Evil 4 has 9,743 ratings and Silent Hill 2 has 5,122. The equal score does not mean equal consensus, because the audience sizes, timing, and reasons for rating may differ. Do not rank an entire PS5 catalog by user score alone.

Store stars are not Metacritic points

The Silent Hill 2 PlayStation Store listing shows 4.75/5 from 64,942 ratings in the October 13, 2026 snapshot. That is a large owner-rating sample, but it is still a five-star store measure, not a critic aggregate. Use it to understand purchaser satisfaction on that storefront, not to convert it mathematically into a Metascore.

Verify the PS5 version, edition, and region

Resident Evil 4

PlayStation’s US listing identifies the 2023 release as available on PS4 and PS5, published by Capcom U.S.A., Inc., with a March 24, 2023 release date. The listing also warns that some PS4 features may be absent when the game is played on PS5. Read that note on the store page for your region before assuming every feature carries over unchanged.

Silent Hill 2

The US PlayStation Store listing presents Standard and Deluxe editions. In the dated snapshot, the Standard Edition displayed $69.99 and the Deluxe Edition $79.99 with discount presentation, and the page stated that PlayStation Plus Extra subscribers could access the game in the catalog. These are volatile US storefront details, not guaranteed current prices or permanent subscription benefits. Confirm the edition, price, and catalog status in your own account before checkout.

Why edition checks matter

Deluxe bonuses, upgrade paths, downloadable content, physical availability, and subscription access can differ by territory and can change after launch. Capture the exact PS5 product page, not a search-result snippet, and make sure the platform label says PS5 before buying.

Use a comparison worksheet

A small worksheet prevents a headline score from deciding everything. Create one row per game and fill in these fields:

Field What to record Why it matters
PS5 critic score Aggregate plus critic-review count and access date Shows the platform-specific professional consensus and its breadth
Player evidence User score, rating count, service, and date Keeps user opinion distinct from critic opinion
Horror style Action-forward, psychological, atmospheric, survival, science-fiction, or multiplayer Matches the game to your preferred type of fear
Solo or shared play Solo immersion, optional cooperation, or multiplayer focus Sets expectations for isolation and social play
PS5 product details Edition, region, price, compatibility notes, and subscription status Prevents buying the wrong version or relying on an expired offer
Deal-breakers Repeated complaints about pacing, controls, comfort, difficulty, or technical issues Protects you from a high score that conflicts with your needs

For the two examples here, the worksheet would place Resident Evil 4 ahead on critic aggregate and sample size, while placing Silent Hill 2 in the psychological-and-atmospheric column. That is a more useful conclusion than declaring one the universal “best.”

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Using an all-platform list

An article may combine scores from several consoles or use a general franchise score. That can hide differences between versions. Recheck the PS5 tab or platform label.

Confusing a remake’s score with the original

Remakes and original releases are separate products with separate review histories. Confirm the release year and product name shown on the PS5 listing.

Presenting a store discount as the normal price

A discounted price can disappear when a promotion ends. State the storefront, region, date, and whether the amount is promotional.

Treating “horror” as one genre

Action survival horror, psychological horror, atmospheric slow burns, space or science-fiction terror, and multiplayer scares create very different experiences. Sort by style before score.

Overstating a changing ranking

Say “in the October 13, 2026 snapshot” when citing these figures. Do not describe this two-game comparison as a definitive ranking of every PS5 horror release; the available evidence does not establish a complete catalog.

  • Continue your desperate escape with 11 hours of new gameplay, nine gripping new scenarios, three terrifying new enemy types, and two large-and-lethal bosses.
  • This expansion will drastically change the course of your Resident Evil 3: The Board Game campaign, taking you beyond the built-up city streets to brand new locations plagued by new enemies.
  • But new enemies aren’t your only threat. To move forward, you must adapt to new gameplay mechanics introduced by the changed environment. Creep silently through the City Hospital. Wade through flood water in the City Park.

A practical pick from the available evidence

Pick Resident Evil 4 if your priority is the strongest critic aggregate in this comparison, a large review sample, and action-forward survival horror. Pick Silent Hill 2 if your priority is psychological tension, oppressive atmosphere, and a slower, dread-led experience, even though its critic aggregate is lower. If both styles appeal to you, use the PS5 edition, current price, and any compatibility or subscription details shown in your region as the final tie-breakers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these the only highly rated horror games on PS5?

No. The figures here support a careful comparison of Resident Evil 4 and Silent Hill 2, not a complete ranking of every PS5 horror release. A broader list requires checking each game’s PS5-specific score, review count, and current product page.

Should I trust the Metacritic user score or the PlayStation Store rating more?

Neither is universally superior. They measure different populations on different scales. Use each as context, keep it separate from the critic aggregate, and look for repeated comments about issues that matter to you.

Can I assume a PS4 horror game will include every feature on PS5?

No. Check the official product page. The PlayStation Resident Evil 4 listing specifically warns that some PS4 features may be absent when played on PS5.

Do Silent Hill 2 PlayStation Plus Extra benefits and prices stay fixed?

No. The US listing’s catalog access and the $69.99 Standard and $79.99 Deluxe figures were storefront snapshots. Verify your region’s current page before purchase.

What should I do if two games have the same user score?

Compare the critic score and review count, then choose by horror style, solo-versus-shared play, and your personal deal-breakers. Equal user scores do not make two games equivalent.
