Start with the official directory that matches your problem, then call the listed organization to confirm it serves your address, handles your type of case, is accepting intakes, and can meet your deadline. For housing disputes, use the Legal Services Corporation (LSC) “I Need Legal Help” finder. For immigration representation, use the U.S. Department of Justice Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR) “Find Legal Representation” resources, including its pro bono provider list and recognition-and-accreditation rosters.
A directory listing is only a starting point—not a promise of free service, eligibility, an appointment, or representation. This guide explains how to screen a provider, what documents and questions to prepare, how attorney and accredited-representative authority works, and how to avoid unauthorized immigration practitioners.
Choose the right kind of help first
The same household may need more than one service. A landlord-tenant nonprofit may address an eviction, unsafe conditions, a lockout, or subsidized-housing issue, while an immigration provider may handle a USCIS application or an immigration-court case. Some organizations can refer you to another specialist; few handle every forum or legal problem.
Classify the immediate problem before searching:
- Tenant or housing matter: eviction, a notice to quit, lockout, rent or deposit dispute, repairs and habitability, discrimination, utility shutoff, or subsidized housing.
- USCIS matter: applications, petitions, work authorization, adjustment of status, naturalization, or other benefits handled by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.
- EOIR matter: removal proceedings in immigration court, an appeal to the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA), or another proceeding handled through EOIR.
- Immigrant-rights support: know-your-rights information, referrals, language access, domestic-violence or trafficking support, or help coordinating a housing and immigration problem.
Write down the forum, the location of the property or court, and every deadline. Those details determine whether a provider is authorized and able to help. If housing and immigration issues overlap, say so at intake; a tenant office may need to coordinate with an immigration specialist, and an immigration office may refer the housing portion elsewhere.

Find tenant legal aid through the LSC locator
1. Search by address or city
Open the Legal Services Corporation’s I Need Legal Help page. Its finder lets you enter an address or city “to find an LSC-funded legal aid organization near you.” LSC says it supports 129 independent nonprofit legal-aid organizations across the states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories; that is an institutional, source-dated network count, not a count of every legal-aid group and not a guarantee that an office is available for your case.
Use the address where the dispute is occurring, not merely a convenient mailing address. A provider may serve only certain counties, court districts, tribal areas, or housing programs. If the case is filed in a different county, search using the court’s location too and ask which office can appear there.
2. Verify the local office directly
Call or use the organization’s intake channel shown in the listing. Ask these questions in one conversation:
- Does the office serve the property’s exact address and the court or agency handling the matter?
- Does it handle the specific issue—such as an eviction, lockout, rental-condition case, voucher termination, or discrimination claim?
- What income, household, age, disability, domestic-violence, or other eligibility screening applies?
- Is intake open now, and is the office offering information, brief advice, document help, negotiation, a referral, or full representation?
- Are services free, and are there any permitted costs or fees?
- Are interpreters or services in your preferred language available?
- What documents should you send, and how should you send them securely?
- Will a staff member contact you after screening, and how should you check the status if you do not hear back?
The LSC directory identifies LSC-funded organizations; it does not establish that a particular office accepts every tenant matter or that its intake is currently open. Only the local provider can confirm those facts. Ask for the office’s case or intake number and the name of the person who gave you instructions so you can follow up accurately.
3. Tell intake about urgent dates
Lead with the date of any court hearing, lockout, utility shutoff, response deadline, or scheduled inspection. Say that date plainly and ask whether the office has an emergency queue or can refer you elsewhere if it cannot take the case. Calling a directory does not pause a legal deadline, cancel a hearing, or stop an eviction; follow every notice and court instruction while seeking help. If you have already missed a date, disclose that immediately rather than waiting for a complete document packet.
4. Use self-help information carefully
LSC directs people who need general legal information or forms to LawHelp.org. Self-help pages can explain terms and help you organize paperwork, but reading them does not create an attorney-client relationship and does not substitute for advice about your facts. Do not assume a form is correct for your state, court, lease, or immigration status without checking its jurisdiction and date. A form or referral page also cannot tell you whether a local provider will accept your case.
5. Document the housing problem while you search
Keep a chronological record of notices, rent payments, repair requests, photographs, messages, and contact with the landlord or housing agency. Save court papers and envelopes that show dates. Do not alter originals; make readable copies or scans and label them with the date. Tell intake if a landlord has changed locks, shut off utilities, threatened removal, or scheduled an inspection, because those facts may affect how the office triages the call.

Find immigration representation through DOJ EOIR resources
Start with “Find Legal Representation”
The U.S. Department of Justice Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR) provides “Find Legal Representation” and “Learn About Legal Representation” resources. They point to two different paths:
- Pro bono legal service providers: organizations listed for free legal services in immigration-court proceedings.
- Recognition and Accreditation (R&A) rosters: recognized nonprofit organizations and the accredited representatives authorized to work through them.
Read the description beside each listing. EOIR’s pro bono list is aimed at people in immigration proceedings, and a listed provider is not required to accept every case. Ask whether it handles your type of proceeding, appears in the relevant court or before the BIA, has capacity, and offers a free service or charges a permitted fee. A provider that helps with one form or hearing may not take responsibility for every later stage.
When you call, identify the immigration court or agency, your next hearing or filing date, your language, and whether you are detained or otherwise unable to attend an office. Ask whether the organization provides information, a consultation, document assistance, or an attorney’s appearance. Get clear instructions about appointments, interpretation, remote contact, and secure delivery of records.
Understand attorney and accredited-representative authority
A licensed attorney can represent a client in immigration matters without being an accredited representative. Verify the attorney’s license and current standing with the relevant state licensing authority. EOIR also publishes discipline information that can be relevant to practice before immigration courts. An attorney’s location does not by itself answer whether the attorney will take your case or appear in the forum you need, so ask directly.

The representative works through a DOJ-recognized organization; accreditation is not a stand-alone personal license to practice anywhere. Check the roster entry for the scope:
- Partial accreditation: representation before the Department of Homeland Security, including USCIS matters, but not immigration-court or BIA representation.
- Full accreditation: can include representation before DHS and EOIR immigration court and BIA proceedings, within the authority shown on the roster.
Confirm the forum before signing a representation agreement. Someone authorized for a USCIS filing may not be authorized to appear in your removal case. Ask to see the recognized organization’s name exactly as it appears on the roster and confirm that the representative is currently listed with that organization.
Check the organization, not just a person’s title
Search DOJ’s current R&A roster for both the recognized organization and the representative’s name. The roster page identified an April 28, 2025 update; listings and status can change, so review the live entry when you are ready to hire or authorize someone.

An organization missing from the recognition list is not automatically violating the rules. DOJ explains that an organization practicing immigration law solely through licensed attorneys does not need DOJ recognition. In that situation, verify the actual attorney’s bar standing and the forum in which the attorney will appear. Conversely, a person’s claim to work for a nonprofit does not replace checking the person’s own attorney license or accreditation.

Compare providers on the facts that affect your case
When several offices appear, compare them using the same questions rather than choosing by a directory position or a promising advertisement. A directory is a locator, not a ranking of quality.
| What to compare | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Problem and forum | Is this a landlord-tenant or civil-court matter, a USCIS benefit, or an EOIR court/BIA case? | Authority and experience can be limited to a particular forum. |
| Geographic coverage | Does the provider serve your address and the court or agency location? | Service areas and appearance rights are often local or forum-specific. |
| Service level | Will you receive information, brief advice, document preparation, negotiation, a referral, or full representation? | A short consultation is not the same as an attorney appearing for you. |
| Eligibility and cost | What income or other criteria apply? Is the service pro bono, and are any fees charged? | Directory presence does not establish eligibility or a free appointment. |
| Capacity and timing | Is intake open? Can the office meet your deadline? Are interpreters and appointments available? | A qualified provider may still have no capacity for a new case. |
| Authority | What is the attorney’s license and standing, or the organization’s recognition and representative’s accreditation level? | Credentials must match the work and forum you need. |
| Communication and safety | How will the office contact you, and can it use a safe phone number, email, or language? | Notices and personal immigration information should reach you securely and understandably. |
Keep the answers in a short call log with the date, staff member, case number, documents requested, and next step. Record whether the office said it was screening, placed you on a waitlist, made a referral, or declined. If an office declines, ask whether it can name another local referral source; a refusal usually reflects scope or capacity, not a conclusion about the merits of your case.
Recognize and avoid unauthorized immigration practitioners
EOIR states: “Notarios, document preparers, immigration consultants, and travel agents are not allowed to practice law.” In the United States, “notario” does not mean a licensed immigration lawyer. A document preparer may type information that you provide, but cannot advise whether you qualify for relief, choose a legal strategy, or represent you in immigration court.
Warning signs include promises of a guaranteed immigration result, pressure to pay immediately, refusal to identify the supervising attorney or organization, requests to sign blank forms, or instructions to hide facts. Those signs warrant stopping to verify credentials; they do not turn a directory listing into proof of authorization.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Before paying or handing over original documents:
- Ask for the person’s full legal name, employer, and whether the person is a licensed attorney or an accredited representative.
- For an attorney, check the relevant bar’s license and discipline or standing information.
- For an accredited representative, check the DOJ R&A roster, the recognized organization, and whether accreditation is partial or full.
- Ask which agency or court the person may appear before and what exact services are included.
- Request a written agreement showing fees, payment schedule, filing responsibilities, and who keeps your documents.
- Keep copies of every form, receipt, translation, notice, and message.
- Do not surrender passports, identity papers, or court notices without confirming how they will be stored and returned.
Do not treat a large fee as proof of fraud, and do not assume a low fee is proof of authorization. DOJ-recognized organizations may charge fees under program rules, while the EOIR pro bono list concerns providers offering free services in immigration-court proceedings. The safe test is verified authority plus a clear written description of the work.
Prepare for the first call or intake interview
Make a one-page timeline
List the move-in date, notices received, payments, repair requests, court filings, immigration applications, arrests or prior orders, and every upcoming deadline. Use exact dates and keep facts separate from assumptions. Mention language, disability, safety, or transportation needs when scheduling. If a fact is uncertain, label it as uncertain instead of guessing; the provider can tell you what must be verified.

Gather copies, not irreplaceable originals
For a tenant matter, collect the lease, rent ledger or receipts, notices, court papers, photographs, inspection reports, repair requests, texts or emails, and subsidy or voucher correspondence. For immigration, gather passports and identity documents, USCIS notices and receipt numbers, prior applications, immigration-court notices, prior orders, family records, and any criminal-case paperwork. Ask the provider before sending originals; use a secure portal or the method it specifies. Organize files by date and keep a backup that is accessible if your phone or email account changes.
Describe the outcome you need
Say whether you need a hearing referral, help responding to a notice, a repair negotiation, a USCIS filing review, advice about an immigration-court deadline, or full representation. Clear objectives help an intake worker route you to a specialist and avoid promising a service the office does not provide. Ask what you should do while the office is deciding, including whether you must file or appear on your own.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →When local intake is closed or no provider can take the case
Ask each organization for a referral to a provider that serves your county, court, language, or case type. Repeat the search with the exact court location rather than your home city if the case is elsewhere. For immigration, distinguish a USCIS matter from an EOIR matter before calling another office; the wrong forum can consume the time you have.
Continue complying with notices and preserve proof that you sought help. Do not miss a hearing because a provider has not confirmed representation. A legal-aid or pro bono listing cannot enter an appearance, request a continuance, or extend a filing deadline on your behalf unless the provider agrees to do so and follows the required procedure. If an office gives you a referral, confirm the new office’s intake, authority, fees, and deadline capacity rather than assuming the referral is an acceptance.
What these directories can—and cannot—tell you
- They can help you locate organizations connected to LSC funding or DOJ immigration programs.
- They cannot guarantee that a provider handles your legal issue, serves your address, speaks your language, has an open intake, or will represent you.
- They cannot determine your eligibility, predict the result of a case, or replace individualized legal advice.
- They cannot authorize an unlisted consultant, notario, or preparer to practice law.
- They do not by themselves establish that a service is free, that a consultation creates representation, or that a provider can appear at every stage.
Because no city, state, case type, or deadline is specified here, no single local office can be identified as the right provider. Availability, service boundaries, eligibility rules, languages, and case acceptance must be confirmed directly with the organization at the time you call.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an LSC listing mean the tenant service is free?
No. It identifies an LSC-funded legal-aid organization, but the local office decides eligibility, intake status, service level, and any permitted costs. Ask directly whether your matter qualifies and whether the help is information, brief advice, a referral, or representation.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Only a representative with full accreditation may include EOIR immigration court and BIA representation within the rostered authority. Partial accreditation covers DHS, including USCIS, but not immigration-court or BIA proceedings. The representative must work through the recognized organization shown on the DOJ roster.

Is an organization that is missing from the DOJ recognition roster automatically unauthorized?
No. An organization that practices immigration law solely through licensed attorneys does not need DOJ recognition. Verify the actual attorney’s license and standing and confirm the forum. For a nonattorney representative, check the organization and accreditation roster.
What should I do if my hearing or eviction date is close?
Tell the intake worker the exact date at the beginning of the call and ask about urgent screening or a referral. Keep following every court or agency instruction. Contacting a directory does not pause a deadline, cancel a hearing, or stop an eviction.
Are notarios or immigration consultants allowed to give legal advice?
EOIR says notarios, document preparers, immigration consultants, and travel agents are not allowed to practice law. They cannot decide whether you qualify for relief, choose a legal strategy, or represent you in immigration court. Verify an attorney’s bar standing or a representative’s DOJ accreditation before paying.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCan one organization handle both my housing and immigration problems?
Possibly, but do not assume it. Ask whether the office handles each problem and each forum. A provider may offer a referral or handle only one part, so confirm who is responsible for each filing, hearing, and deadline.
What documents should I bring to intake?
Bring copies of relevant leases, notices, court papers, payment or repair records, USCIS notices, receipt numbers, immigration-court papers, prior orders, identity and family records, and criminal-case paperwork. Ask before sending originals and use the provider’s secure delivery method.
What if every listed provider declines my case?
Ask each office for a referral that matches your county, court, language, and case type, then verify the new office’s capacity and authority. A decline often reflects scope or capacity, not the merits of your case. Continue complying with notices while seeking help.
The Bottom Line
Use LSC’s locator for tenant problems and DOJ EOIR’s representation resources for immigration matters. Then verify the local provider’s forum, service area, eligibility, current intake, language access, fees, and authority before relying on it. Give urgent dates first, keep copies of your records, and avoid anyone who cannot show a valid attorney license or the required DOJ recognition and accreditation.
