To play WARDOGS with friends, first get everyone into the same match, select the same faction, and then create or join a squad from the in-match menu. The current walkthrough reported by Shacknews does not describe a pre-match party lobby: one player enters a server, friends join through Steam or by using the same server ID, everyone chooses the same faction, and a player selects Esc → Create Squad. Faction capacity can force someone to wait for a slot.
If you are playing alone, join an open squad in the match or use an independent WARDOGS LFG community to find recurring teammates. Once grouped, squad voice, private squad text, pings, gold squadmate markers and squad-locked vehicles make coordination much easier than relying only on proximity chat.
How WARDOGS squads work
BULKHEAD’s February 18, 2026 announcement describes squad size as “Unlimited” and says that squadding up adds UI, communication tools and vehicle locking. The same announcement highlights proximity chat and the ability to construct loudspeakers for faction-wide or enemy-facing broadcasts. “Unlimited” does not mean that every player on a server must be in one group. It means the announcement does not set a fixed numerical squad cap. In practice, a squad still depends on the current interface, server population and whether its access is open or locked. Treat the displayed squad list as the authority for your current match.

In practical terms, a squad gives you a focused group inside the larger faction. Squadmates are easier to identify, can use squad-only communication, and can reserve vehicles for the group. The exact menu labels and key bindings can change with game updates, so treat the procedure below as the currently reported workflow rather than a permanent interface guarantee.
Squad communication versus proximity chat
- Squad voice: The Shacknews walkthrough says squad voice works regardless of distance, so separated squadmates can still communicate while maneuvering.
- Proximity voice: Distance-limited and audible to nearby enemies, making it useful for local interaction but unsuitable for private tactical discussion.
- Squad text and pings: The WARDOGS tips page lists private squad text, squad voice channels and squad pings. See Tips | Game text | WARDOGS.
- Visual identification: Squadmates are shown with gold-colored trackers, helping you distinguish them from other faction members.
A simple division keeps channels understandable: put plans, location updates and requests for help in squad voice or squad text; reserve proximity voice for something that concerns people physically near you. If a player is separated from the group, distance may prevent proximity chat from reaching them, while the squad channel remains useful.
Before trying to join friends
Agree on the connection plan before anyone clicks into a server. The reported friend-joining process does not begin with a universal pre-match invite screen, and the reviewed sources do not establish a cross-platform invitation procedure.
- Choose one player to enter the target server first.
- Decide whether the others will join through Steam’s friends list or by entering the same server or server ID.
- Keep the intended faction in mind; faction capacity can prevent everyone from selecting it immediately.
- Use a short in-game call sign or text cue so friends recognize one another if the server is busy.
- Decide in advance whether the squad should remain open for extra players or become locked once the planned group arrives.
It helps to appoint one person as the connection lead. That player can share the server ID, report when the faction has room and announce when the squad has been created. Everyone else should avoid repeatedly changing servers without telling the group, because a server join alone does not guarantee access to the chosen faction or squad.
How to join friends and create a squad
The following steps are the sequence reported by Sam Chandler’s Shacknews guide, published September 15, 2026. They are a secondary-source walkthrough, not a publisher-confirmed universal procedure.
- Have one friend enter a match. That player should tell the others the server or server ID and the faction the group intends to use.
- Join the same server. Friends can reportedly use Steam’s friends list to join a player who is already in a match, or manually locate the agreed server. If the server browser or capacity changes, repeat the search using the server ID.
- Select the same faction. Each player chooses the agreed faction after loading in. If that faction is full, wait for a slot or coordinate a different entry order; do not assume the game will move everyone automatically.
- Open the in-match menu. Press Esc after joining the match and selecting a faction.
- Create the squad. Choose Create Squad. Friends on the same screen can join the newly created squad.
- Set access deliberately. Leave the squad open if you want other players to fill empty places. Lock it when you want to restrict membership to the people you invited or already coordinated with.
- Confirm membership. Check for the gold squadmate indicators and test squad text or voice before moving away from the starting area.
If the option is missing, first verify that you are in a live match, have selected a faction and are looking at the in-match menu rather than a title-screen screen. Menu placement may change in later builds.
What to do while a faction slot is unavailable
Do not treat a full faction as a failed invite. The reported walkthrough specifically warns that capacity can delay a friend’s entry. Keep the server and intended faction information visible, wait for a place to open, or agree that the waiting player will join after another teammate enters. If the group changes factions, tell everyone before selecting so that you do not split the party between opposing sides.

Verifying the group before moving out
After the squad is created, have every member send a short squad-text message or acknowledge a voice check. Gold trackers provide a second confirmation that the correct people are grouped. This short check catches two common mix-ups: joining the right server but the wrong faction, and being on the same faction without actually joining the same squad.
Finding teammates when you are playing solo
Join an open squad in the current match
An open squad is the fastest way to meet players without leaving the game. Open the squad list, select a squad that accepts members and join it. The tips page states that players can join only an open squad. If a squad is locked, you need its leader to open access or invite you.
Open squads are best when you need help immediately, do not care who fills the remaining places, and want to use the game’s own squad voice and markers. Their membership and communication style can change when the match changes, so establish a simple plan as soon as you join. A useful first message is simply your location and what channel you will use; this avoids assuming that everyone has heard a previous conversation.
Use an independent LFG community for recurring teammates
Community-run groups are more suitable when you want regular teammates, scheduled sessions or a voice channel outside the match. Two examples listed by their operators are WARDOGS FIGHT CLUB and the WARDOGS Discord Server & LFG Community. They are independent communities, not official publisher services; check each community’s rules and moderation before sharing personal information.

Coordinating effectively once the squad exists
Use squad voice for plans, proximity voice for local actions
Keep strategic information in squad voice because the cited walkthrough says it remains available regardless of distance. Use proximity chat for nearby interaction, warnings or role-play when you accept that nearby enemies may hear it. Do not assume a proximity conversation is private.
Before the match becomes busy, agree on a few short phrases. For example, say a location first, then the request: “north road, regroup” or “vehicle, need driver.” Short calls are easier to understand than long explanations, especially when several people are speaking. If someone misses a call, repeat it in squad text or mark the location with a ping.

Mark objectives with pings
Squad pings provide a quick way to point out an enemy, route, resource or rally location without speaking. Establish a basic vocabulary at the start of the match—for example, one ping for “move here,” another for “enemy,” and a spoken confirmation for urgent changes. The game’s tips text specifically lists squad pings as a coordination feature.

Watch the gold squadmate trackers
Gold-colored squadmate trackers let you identify your own group among other faction members. Use them to avoid following the wrong unit, check whether someone has fallen behind and regroup before entering a contested area. When the group splits, call a clear meeting point and use the trackers to confirm that everyone has rejoined before changing direction.
Reserve vehicles for the squad
Vehicle locking is identified as a squad benefit in the publisher-attributed announcement. When a vehicle is important to your plan, assign a driver and a fallback driver, then lock it if the interface offers that option. A locked vehicle can prevent unrelated players from taking it, but it also reduces access for allies who are not in your squad.
Tell the squad who is responsible for the vehicle before moving it. If the driver disconnects or leaves, reassess access rather than assuming the same arrangement still applies. Vehicle locking is a coordination aid, not a substitute for communicating where the vehicle is going or who is riding in it.

Use loudspeakers intentionally
The publisher statement says players can construct loudspeakers to broadcast faction propaganda. Treat a loudspeaker as a public or theatrical communication tool, not a private squad channel; anything intended only for your group belongs in squad voice or squad text. Because the statement frames loudspeakers as faction-facing broadcasts, avoid using one for information that should stay limited to your squad.

Open access is the better default for a solo player trying to build momentum during a live match. Locked access is more predictable for friends who arranged a server and faction in advance. If an expected teammate cannot enter, check the setting before troubleshooting anything more complicated.
Troubleshooting common joining problems
A friend cannot see or join the server
- Confirm that the first player is actually in a live match rather than a menu or loading screen.
- Send the exact server ID and have the friend search for that server instead of relying only on the friends-list join action.
- Check that everyone is using the same game build and that the server has not filled or changed.
- Confirm that the friend has selected the intended faction after loading; joining the server and joining the squad are separate steps.
The faction is full
Faction capacity is the most important timing constraint in the reported workflow. Wait for a slot, have players join in a different order, or agree on another faction. A successful server join does not guarantee that the desired faction still has room.
Create Squad is not available
- Finish loading into the match and select a faction first.
- Press Esc to open the in-match menu, then look for Create Squad.
- If the label or key has changed after an update, inspect the current controls and squad screens rather than relying on an older key binding.
- Make sure you are not looking at a title-screen menu or a server browser instead of the live-match screen.
You joined a squad but cannot add a friend
Check whether the squad is locked. An open squad accepts members from the squad screen; a locked squad limits access. Ask the leader to open it or coordinate an invitation if the current build provides one.
Voice communication is confusing
- Use squad voice for information that should reach distant teammates.
- Remember that proximity voice is distance-limited and can be heard by nearby enemies.
- Fall back to squad text and pings if a microphone, voice setting or channel selection is not working.
- Ask teammates to acknowledge important instructions in text so you know the message reached the intended channel.
An open squad fills with strangers
That is the expected trade-off of leaving access open. Explain the plan in squad text, or lock the squad once the intended players have joined. If the group is no longer working together, use the current squad controls to decide whether to keep recruiting or regroup with a different open squad.
