To get a rideable camel, search a desert (and, in older Java 1.20 worlds, especially a desert village), lure the animal with cactus, move it somewhere safe, and put a saddle on it. Minecraft does not use a horse-style taming meter for camels: cactus attracts them and breeds them, while the saddle enables riding. A saddled camel can carry two players, walk, sprint and make a forward dash from the jump key.
What you need to know before searching
Camels arrived in Minecraft 1.20 as part of the Trails & Tales update. Their exact spawning rule depends on the edition and version, so advice that treats every world identically can send you looking in the wrong place.
- Original 1.20 behavior: camels were generated in desert villages, with a camel associated with each village at world creation.
- Java Edition 1.21.5 documentation: camels are recorded as spawning in deserts as well, not only in villages.
- Practical rule: search deserts first, check desert villages, and verify the version shown on your title screen or launcher before assuming a village-only or open-desert rule.
The rest of the process is consistent: cactus is the useful lure and breeding food, and a saddle is the riding equipment. The sources establish camel behavior most clearly for Java Edition 1.20 and later Java documentation; Bedrock players should check the behavior in the specific release they are playing if a spawn result differs.
How to find a camel
1. Locate a desert biome
Camels are desert animals, so begin by exploring a desert rather than plains, forests or savannas. A desert gives you the best chance of finding one under the documented rules, and it also supplies cactus for the next steps.

Bring enough food, blocks and tools for a long search. A desert can be deceptively large, and a camel may be partly hidden behind a dune or village structure. Search around the full village perimeter instead of checking only the well and houses.
2. Check desert villages
For worlds using the original 1.20 generation behavior, a desert village is the key landmark. Walk through the village and its immediate surroundings, looking for the tall, long-legged mob rather than a small animal. If you are playing an older Java world or a version whose notes still describe village-based generation, a village remains a more reliable target than random desert travel.

Java Edition 1.21.5 documentation records camels spawning in deserts. That means an open desert search can succeed even when no village is nearby. The change is why the edition and version should be part of any camel-finding advice: “camels only spawn in villages” is not a safe universal statement.
4. Mark the route home
Once you find a camel, place distinctive blocks, torches or signs around the location and note your coordinates. You do not want to leave the animal while returning for a saddle, and a desert can make the return journey difficult to retrace.
Can you tame a camel?
Not in the same way as a horse. The documented camel mechanics do not use repeated mounting, a taming meter or a successful-heart animation. Instead, cactus has two practical roles:
- Attraction: hold cactus in your hand and the camel will follow you, allowing you to lead it away from danger or toward a pen.
- Breeding: feed cactus to two camels when you want more camels.
Players often call the process “taming” because they are making a wild camel useful and controllable. In mechanical terms, you are attracting and securing it, then saddling it for travel. Repeatedly mounting an unsaddled camel is not the sourced taming method.
How to bring a camel home safely
Use cactus as a hand-held lure
Put cactus in your selected hotbar slot and keep it in your hand while walking away from the camel. The animal follows the held item. Move slowly enough that it does not become trapped on a village corner, dune or narrow opening.

Choose a route with room to turn
Camels are large and tall. A one-block doorway, cramped cave or tightly fenced path can leave the animal wedged in place. Build or choose a route with a clear floor and enough width for the body to pass. Avoid steep drops and lava, and fill holes before leading the camel across them.
Build a temporary enclosure
A simple fenced or walled area gives you a safe place to leave the camel while you collect equipment. Keep the enclosure open enough for the animal to stand and turn. Camels may sit down on their own; a cramped pen makes that behavior more troublesome because there is less room to maneuver when it stands again.
Do not confuse following with a permanent lead
The cactus attraction works while you are holding the item, but it is not a substitute for securing the camel. Once you switch items or walk away, the camel can stop following. Close the gate or otherwise contain it before leaving to gather a saddle.

A saddle is the equipment that enables riding. Move close to the camel and use the normal interact action for your edition while holding the saddle. The exact button depends on your control configuration, but the in-game result is the same: the saddle appears in the camel’s equipment slot and you can mount it.
The supplied mechanics establish the saddle as the riding item. They do not establish a craftable replacement or a shop item that performs the same job, so plan to obtain a genuine saddle before making a long trip for a camel.
Practical saddle checklist
- Have the saddle in your hotbar before entering the enclosure.
- Stand close enough to interact with the camel, but avoid pushing it into a wall.
- Confirm that the saddle is equipped before setting off; an unsaddled camel cannot be used as your controlled mount.
- Keep cactus available if you still need to reposition the camel or breed it later.
How to ride a camel
Mount and move
Use the mount/interact control on the saddled camel. Once seated, use your normal movement controls to walk. Hold your configured sprint control to sprint. The camel supplies the movement, so your direction comes from the rider’s controls rather than from holding cactus.
Trigger the forward dash
Press the jump key while riding to make the camel dash forward. This is a forward burst, not a vertical jump. It is useful for crossing a gap, escaping a threat or gaining speed on a straight section of desert.

The dash temporarily consumes stamina. After a dash, the camel needs a short recovery period before another dash is available. Treat the ability as a burst-movement resource: use it for a specific obstacle or escape instead of repeatedly pressing jump and expecting an uninterrupted boost.
Understand the difference between sprinting and dashing
Sprinting is sustained movement while you hold the sprint control. Dashing is the separate forward burst activated by the jump key and limited by stamina and recovery. If a camel stops dashing, that does not necessarily mean the saddle failed; it may simply be recovering its stamina.
Expect the camel to sit
Camels can sit down by themselves. While sitting, movement may be difficult until the animal stands again. Give it room and time rather than repeatedly trying to force movement in a narrow passage. This behavior is especially inconvenient in doorways, pens and on the edge of a bridge, which is why an open staging area is safer than a cramped stable.
Can two players ride one camel?
Yes. One camel can carry up to two players at the same time. This is the camel’s defining multiplayer advantage: a driver can control movement while a second player travels as a passenger instead of needing a separate mount.

The front rider handles movement, sprinting and the jump-key dash. Plan the route before dashing because the burst moves the whole camel forward and consumes stamina.
For the passenger
The second player shares the camel’s journey without taking control of its movement. Use the arrangement for transporting a companion, escorting a new player across a desert or keeping both players together on a long route.
When a second rider is not convenient
A two-player mount is less useful when both players need independent directions, separate cargo or different destinations. In those situations, split up after securing the camel rather than treating the second seat as a replacement for a complete travel plan.

Why the camel is useful for survival travel
Height protects a standing rider from many ground mobs
The camel’s height places a standing rider above the reach of most ground-based melee mobs. This is protection by positioning, not invulnerability: ranged attacks, hazards, falls and mobs with unusual reach can still threaten you. Keep moving and avoid assuming that the mount makes every hostile encounter harmless.
It clears obstacles up to 1.5 blocks high
Camels can walk over obstacles up to 1.5 blocks high. That makes low walls, path edges and similar terrain less disruptive than they are for a player walking on foot. It does not mean the camel can cross every wall or climb arbitrary terrain; plan around the stated 1.5-block limit and use blocks or a detour for taller barriers.
Its dash changes route planning
A dash can bridge a short interruption in the route or create distance from danger, but the stamina recovery window means you should not build a journey around back-to-back bursts. Leave a straight, unobstructed line in front of the camel when you intend to dash.
Breeding more camels
Once you have two camels in a safe area, feed cactus to them to use the documented breeding mechanic. Keep both animals close together and make sure neither is trapped against a wall. The cactus used for breeding is the same item that attracts a camel, so reserve a supply before moving your pair far from the desert.
Breeding is separate from saddling. A baby or newly obtained camel is not automatically a rideable mount simply because it was bred; riding still depends on the saddle-based equipment mechanic.
Health, hazards and handling
Published health reference
A Minecraft Wiki Java Edition 1.20 reference lists 32 health points for a camel. Treat that figure as version-specific rather than a promise that every edition and later release uses exactly the same value.
Protect the enclosure
- Use a gate or walls rather than relying on the camel remaining near a cactus-holding player.
- Keep the pen away from cliffs, lava and deep water.
- Leave enough headroom and floor space for a tall animal that can sit and stand.
- Light the surrounding area if hostile mobs are a concern, while remembering that height protects a rider from many ground melee attacks but does not prevent all damage.
Recover from a stuck camel
If the camel sits in a doorway or against a wall, stop pushing it with your character. Open the route, step back and wait for it to stand. Use cactus from a wider position to draw it toward clear ground. If you are mounted and cannot turn, dismount only after creating space so you do not strand the animal in an even tighter spot.

Camel travel compared with other ways to move
The most useful comparison is not a universal speed chart; the documented camel advantages are situational. Use the following decision guide when choosing how to travel.

Complete current comparative statistics for horses, donkeys and walking are not established by the cited camel references, so a universal ranking of speed, jump height or carrying capacity would be misleading. Choose a camel for its two-seat capacity, height and dash rather than an unsupported claim that it wins every movement category.
Version-aware troubleshooting
“I searched a village and found no camel.”
Check your edition and version first. The original 1.20 behavior associated camels with desert villages, while Java Edition 1.21.5 documentation also records desert spawning. Search the surrounding desert and verify that you are not applying the older village-only expectation to a newer Java world.
“The camel follows me, but I cannot ride it.”
Holding cactus only attracts the animal. Equip a saddle through the camel’s interaction slot, then mount it. Attraction and riding are separate mechanics.
“Mounting did not tame it.”
There is no sourced horse-style taming sequence to complete. Use cactus to attract and secure the camel; use a saddle to ride it.
“The dash stopped working.”
The dash temporarily consumes stamina and requires recovery. Wait briefly, keep a clear line ahead, and try the jump key again after the recovery period.
“The camel will not move.”
It may be sitting. Give it room and wait for it to stand. If it is wedged in a doorway or pen, clear the surrounding blocks before attempting to lead it again.
“A wall that looks low blocks my route.”
Compare it with the 1.5-block clearance limit. If it exceeds that practical height or has an awkward shape, build a ramp-like route or go around it instead of repeatedly dashing into it.
Complete camel checklist
- Identify your Minecraft edition and version.
- Travel to a desert; check a desert village, and in Java 1.21.5-era behavior search open desert as well.
- Carry cactus and hold it to attract the camel.
- Lead the animal to a wide, safe enclosure.
- Secure the enclosure before leaving.
- Equip a saddle using the normal interaction control.
- Mount and use normal movement to walk or the sprint control to sprint.
- Press the jump key for a forward dash, allowing time for stamina recovery.
- Use the height and 1.5-block clearance intelligently, without assuming immunity to every hazard.
- Keep cactus if you plan to breed a second camel or reposition the first one.
The practical answer
Finding a camel is a desert search whose details changed with version. Taming is really cactus-based attraction and safe containment, not a repeated-mounting minigame. Saddling is the step that turns the animal into transportation. Once equipped, the camel gives you a two-player seat, sprinting, a stamina-limited forward dash, useful low-obstacle clearance and extra height above most ground melee mobs. If you verify the version, bring cactus, provide room for the camel to sit and stand, and carry a saddle, the entire process is predictable.
