Use three official sources together: Natural Resources Wales (NRW) bathing-water pages for laboratory sample results and annual classifications; your local water company’s storm-overflow map for monitored discharge activity; and NRW’s annual storm-overflow reports for reviewed historical data. They answer different questions, so a spill alert is not a water-quality test and a clean routine sample is not a guarantee that no overflow is operating now.
Start by identifying the named beach, river, lake or designated bathing-water site you care about. Then choose the source that matches your question and check the date, coverage and measurement behind any result. This approach also helps avoid treating a general river-monitoring statement or a national statistic as a live swimming advisory.
Which Welsh source answers your question?
| If you need to know… | Use… | What it measures | Typical timing |
|---|---|---|---|
| “What was the measured bathing-water quality?” | NRW bathing-water site profile and “Check bathing water quality” results | Samples for E. coli and intestinal enterococci, plus annual classification | Individual samples during the bathing season; classification published annually |
| “Is a monitored storm overflow operating or has it recently operated?” | The relevant water company’s storm-overflow map | Event Duration Monitor (EDM) records showing overflow operation | Near-real-time or recent activity, where a monitored asset and map are available |
| “What is the longer-term, regulator-reviewed spill picture?” | NRW annual storm-overflow spill-data reports | Water-company EDM submissions reviewed by NRW | Historical annual reporting, not a live condition report |
NRW’s 2023 report identifies near-real-time maps launched in 2024 by Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water and Hafren Dyfrdwy. The map you need depends on which company operates the overflow serving your location. The three routes differ on update timing, geographic coverage and evidence type: an overflow map describes asset operation, a bathing-water page describes sampled bacteria, and an annual report describes reviewed historical submissions.

1. Find the correct bathing-water results on NRW
Identify the named site
Search NRW’s bathing-water service for the beach or other designated bathing water by its official name. A site profile normally provides the location, monitoring information and a link labelled “Check bathing water quality.” Use the profile rather than relying on a beach name in a social-media post or an unlabelled map pin; several places can share similar names.

The Welsh Government’s bathing-water classifications page also provides a map and links to detailed results. If a place does not appear as a designated bathing water, do not assume that a nearby designated beach’s results apply to it. Record the exact access point, river reach or lake shore you mean before comparing sources.
Read the sample results
Open the individual results for the dates shown. These are measurements taken from samples, not continuous sensors. Look for the sampling date, the reported bacterial values and any accompanying status or advice. A result is evidence about the sampled water at that place and time; it cannot establish conditions at every nearby river mouth, outfall or inland stretch.
Samples for E. coli and intestinal enterococci are the basis of bathing-water assessment. A recent result may be the most useful evidence for the date it represents, but it still has a collection time, a specific site and a limited set of parameters. Do not describe it as a continuous guarantee or as a test of every pollutant.
Understand the annual classification
Wales classifies designated bathing waters annually using E. coli and intestinal enterococci monitoring. The classification summarises the season’s samples and is useful for comparing a site’s historical bathing-water performance, but it is not a live reading.
The Welsh Government classifications index, updated 18 November 2025, reported 112 bathing waters: 78 were classified excellent, 26 good and six satisfactory. The Government described this as 98% meeting its strict environmental standards. That is the latest published classification snapshot identified here. It should not be confused with the later 2026 monitoring programme or used as a same-day status indicator.
Know the 2026 monitoring scope
NRW’s bathing-water page, updated 13 May 2026, says Wales has 114 designated bathing waters and that each will be tested at least eight times during the 2026 season, from 1 May through 30 September. The change from 112 in the 2025 classification index reflects a different source and season; quote the year and publisher whenever you cite a count.
The 2026 annual classification report was scheduled for 18 December 2026, after the latest page update used for this guide. Until that publication, do not present a future classification as if it were already available.

2. Check the water company’s storm-overflow map for current activity
What an EDM alert means
An Event Duration Monitor records when a permitted storm overflow operates and how long the event lasts. A company map can therefore show that a monitored overflow has recently operated, or is operating, subject to the map’s update delay and coverage.
This is an operational signal, not a bacteria result. Shared Regulatory Services Wales explicitly explains that the Dŵr Cymru overflow map does not provide water-quality information. An alert should prompt caution and a check of official bathing-water advice; it should not be converted into a numerical contamination level or described as proof that a beach has failed a test.
“No alert” is also narrower than it sounds. It can mean no event is recorded for the displayed period, but it can also mean the location has no mapped monitored overflow, the relevant asset belongs to another company, or the map has not yet updated. Read the map legend and timestamp before drawing a conclusion.

- Identify the water company serving the catchment or the overflow shown for your site.
- Open that company’s storm-overflow map and search for the named location or nearby asset.
- Check the event timestamp, duration and any legend explaining whether the display is live, delayed or historical.
- Note whether the overflow is actually monitored. A blank map area can mean no mapped asset, not proof that no discharge occurred.
- Compare the map event with NRW’s bathing-water results and any current public advice before entering the water.
NRW’s 2023 report says Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water and Hafren Dyfrdwy launched near-real-time maps in 2024 using EDM data. “Near-real-time” still allows for processing or display delays, so preserve the time you checked and the event time shown if you are documenting a concern.
Relate an overflow to a bathing site carefully
Overflow locations, currents, rainfall and tidal conditions determine how an event may affect a particular bathing place. A marker upstream or in another part of the catchment is not a direct measurement at the beach. Conversely, no marker at the exact beach does not prove that the water is unaffected by an event elsewhere.
Maps also focus on permitted storm-overflow assets. They are not a complete inventory of every possible pollution source, such as a separate incident, a misconnections problem or another discharge. Use the map as one piece of evidence and pair it with the site-specific NRW page and on-site notices.
3. Use NRW’s annual spill reports for historical context
What the reports contain
Water companies submit annual EDM data for regulatory scrutiny, and NRW publishes storm-overflow spill-data reports. These reports aggregate activity across Wales and explain data coverage, methods and limitations. They are the appropriate source for a historical or regulatory question, such as how many monitored events were recorded in a reporting year.
NRW’s report index is separate from the live bathing-water service. Start with the report year, then check whether a figure refers to all permitted overflows, only assets with spill data, or another defined denominator. A national total and an average per monitored overflow are not interchangeable.

2023 figures and their limits
NRW’s 2023 report described more than 2,000 permitted storm overflows across Wales and EDM coverage above 99%. For 2023, it reported an average of 53.5 spills per Dŵr Cymru overflow with spill data and 38.8 per Hafren Dyfrdwy overflow with spill data.
Those averages describe monitored assets in that reporting year; they are not a prediction for your beach and do not say how long an individual event lasted. NRW also cautioned that the available two-year dataset was too short to assess a robust trend. Do not present a year-on-year difference from that report as proof that long-term pollution is rising or falling.
The denominator matters: “per overflow with spill data” does not mean every permitted overflow in Wales experienced that average. Coverage above 99% is a statement about EDM availability in the report, not a claim that every water body is continuously tested for bacteria.
What a historical report cannot tell you
An annual report cannot guarantee the condition of a particular place when you open it. For a current decision, use the water company map and the latest NRW bathing-water information; use the annual report to understand the wider record and the regulator’s review.
Historical reports are valuable for context, accountability and questions to ask a company or regulator. They should not be used to label a specific bathing site safe or unsafe on a particular day without checking the site’s own results and current notices.
How to check a place in the right order
- Name the water body. Record the official beach, river, lake or bathing-water name and, if possible, the nearest town or access point.
- Check designation. Look for the site in NRW’s bathing-water service. If it is designated, open its profile and the “Check bathing water quality” results.
- Check the newest sample date. Read the date and values rather than relying only on an annual label.
- Check the relevant overflow map. Search the serving company’s map for nearby monitored overflows and read the event time and duration.
- Check advice and conditions. Look for signs, local-authority notices and any warning displayed on the official bathing-water page.
- Use the annual report only for context. Compare historical information without treating it as a live safety notice.
- Record what you found. Note the page title, publisher, update date, sample date or event timestamp and the exact site. This prevents an old classification or map view being mistaken for a current update.
- Report a suspected incident. Use the “Report an incident” route on the NRW homepage and follow the current instructions for the information and evidence requested.
How to interpret conflicting signals
A spill alert but an acceptable recent sample
The two records may both be correct. The sample represents one collection time, while the EDM alert records overflow operation. Rainfall can produce a new event after sampling, and the sampled site may be distant from the overflow. Treat the alert as current operational information and seek the latest official advice rather than averaging the two into a single score.
Do not infer that the sample was wrong simply because an overflow later operated, or that the overflow had no significance because an earlier sample was acceptable. They answer different questions on different time scales.
No spill alert but concern about the water
An overflow map covers monitored storm-overflow assets, not every possible pollution source. It does not test water chemistry or bacteria, and a location may have no mapped monitor. Use NRW’s site results where available, observe local signs and report suspected pollution through NRW.

A general river-quality statement
River monitoring programmes can measure environmental condition under Water Framework Directive regulations rather than bathing-water quality. In a 2 September 2026 statement about the River Tawe, the Welsh Government said NRW had reviewed incident reports, water-quality information and wastewater operational information and had found no evidence of pollution or significant deterioration in its most recent routine monitoring. The statement also cautioned that this routine monitoring was not a bathing-water assessment. Do not turn such a finding into a universal claim that swimming is safe.
This distinction is useful beyond the Tawe. Always identify the programme, its sampling design and the environmental question it is intended to answer before applying a result to recreation.
Timing, coverage and terminology to check before sharing a result
- “Live” or “near-real-time”: confirm the map’s update time and whether the event is still in progress.
- Sample result: record the collection date, site and measured parameters.
- Annual classification: label it with its publication year; it summarises samples and is not a live reading.
- Designated bathing water: do not extend the testing schedule to every nearby stretch of water.
- Overflow map: remember that EDM operation data is not a water-quality test.
- Historical average: include the company, year and denominator (overflows with spill data).
- Map coverage: distinguish “no recorded event” from “no monitored overflow shown.”
- Different counts: explain whether a figure comes from the 2025 classification index’s 112 sites or NRW’s 2026 page describing 114 designated waters.
- Publication date: check when the page or report was updated; a later season may use a changed site list or monitoring plan.
Reporting suspected pollution to NRW
NRW’s homepage provides a “Report an incident” route. Use that service for suspected sewage pollution or another environmental incident and follow the live instructions, because the reporting channel, evidence requirements and response procedure can change. Include the precise location, date and time, what you observed and any safe-to-share photographs or other requested details. Do not enter contaminated water to obtain evidence.
Recommended Free Tools
Describe what you actually saw or smelled rather than diagnosing the cause. A visible discharge, unusual colour, strong odour, dead fish or warning sign may all be relevant observations, but the receiving service determines what investigation is appropriate. Keep any reference number or confirmation supplied by the service.
Local authorities also have duties relating to designated bathing waters, including signage and responding to pollution incidents that may affect bathing-water quality. The practical first reporting route for a suspected incident remains NRW’s current incident service; use local signs and notices for immediate site-specific instructions.
What the latest Welsh figures do—and do not—say
The 2025 classification result of 78 excellent, 26 good and six satisfactory sites gives a national annual snapshot for 112 bathing waters. NRW’s 2026 plan to test 114 designated bathing waters at least eight times between 1 May and 30 September describes the next season’s monitoring effort. Neither figure is a real-time status for an individual beach.
Similarly, the 2023 spill report’s more than 2,000 permitted overflows, above-99% EDM coverage and company averages are national historical statistics. They help explain the scale and completeness of the recorded dataset, but they cannot replace the current site profile, sample date or overflow-map event when deciding what is happening near you.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWales’ bathing waters matter for public health, wildlife and local economies. Mary Lewis, Head of Natural Resource Management at NRW, described them as part of Wales’s identity and culture and as places that support communities and local economies. That wider importance is why precise wording matters: a classification, an overflow event and a general river-condition assessment each have a defined role.

A quick decision checklist
- Have you identified the exact named site and whether it is a designated bathing water?
- Did you read the NRW sample date and values instead of only the annual classification?
- Did you check the serving company’s overflow map and its event timestamp?
- Did you keep overflow operation separate from water-quality testing?
- Did you label historical figures with their year, company and coverage?
- Did you check current signs or advice before swimming?
- Did you distinguish a general river-monitoring result from a bathing-water assessment?
- Did you report suspected pollution through NRW’s “Report an incident” service?
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a sewage spill alert prove that the water is unsafe?
No. An EDM alert records operation of a monitored storm overflow and its duration. It is not a bacteria or water-quality test. Check the NRW bathing-water results, current advice and local signs as well.
Where can I see measured bathing-water results in Wales?
Use NRW’s bathing-water service, open the named site profile and select “Check bathing water quality.” The Welsh Government classifications page also links maps and annual classifications.
How often are Welsh designated bathing waters tested?
NRW says each of Wales’ 114 designated bathing waters will be tested at least eight times in the 2026 season, from 1 May to 30 September. This schedule does not automatically apply to undesignated water.

Which companies provide overflow maps?
NRW’s 2023 report identifies near-real-time maps launched in 2024 by Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water and Hafren Dyfrdwy. Use the map for the company operating the relevant asset.
What does an annual NRW spill report tell me?
It provides regulator-reviewed historical context from water-company EDM submissions, including national coverage and yearly statistics. It cannot tell you the current condition at a particular beach or river.
What should I do if I suspect pollution?
Use NRW’s homepage “Report an incident” route and follow its current instructions. Give the precise location, date, time and observations, and do not enter contaminated water to collect evidence.
The Bottom Line
For Wales, combine NRW’s bathing-water sample results with the relevant water company’s EDM overflow map, then use NRW’s annual spill reports for historical context. The map tells you about overflow operation; only sampling and clearly identified monitoring programmes tell you about the water-quality measurement they actually perform. Always check the site, date, coverage and current advice before making a swimming decision.
