The reliable choice depends on your monitoring area, the smallest feature you must see, how often you need observations, the historical period, and whether you need surface-reflectance bands or a ready-made vegetation index. For many projects, start by comparing NASA’s Harmonized Landsat Sentinel-2 (HLS) vegetation-index products, Sentinel-2 or Landsat surface-reflectance scenes, and MODIS vegetation-index composites. HLS offers harmonized 30-meter observations and several indices; Sentinel-2 and Landsat provide sensor-specific control and local detail; MODIS supplies consistent, frequent broad-area composites. No single source is best for every vegetation question.

Define the monitoring decision before choosing a satellite product

Satellite data are only reliable when their scale and processing match the decision you are trying to make. A parcel-level crop question, a forest-disturbance record, a regional drought assessment and a global ecosystem trend require different pixels, observation intervals and quality controls.

Match spatial detail to the decision

  • Field or small-patch monitoring: Ten- to 30-meter data can separate many fields, stands or disturbance patches, provided the target is larger than a pixel and the imagery is not obscured by clouds.
  • Landscape and regional monitoring: Hundreds-of-meters pixels are often adequate when the question concerns broad patterns rather than individual fields.
  • Global or long-term context: Coarser composites can be more useful than detailed scenes if consistent coverage and a long record matter most.

Set a cadence and latency requirement

A satellite’s nominal revisit or a product’s composite interval does not guarantee a clear, usable observation. Clouds, shadows, haze, snow, viewing geometry and processing delays can all reduce the number of observations you can actually use. Decide whether you need a near-real-time alert, a weekly or biweekly status, or a seasonal and historical analysis. Then check both the observation cadence and the product latency.

Decide whether you need an index or the original bands

A ready-made NDVI or EVI layer is convenient and consistent within its product definition. Surface-reflectance imagery gives you more control: you can apply your own masks, calculate several indices, change compositing rules and preserve the original measurements for later reprocessing. The trade-off is that you must understand band definitions, scaling, quality flags and atmospheric or geometric processing.

Public satellite products compared

The following products serve different purposes. Their pixel sizes, temporal definitions and quality layers are not interchangeable.

Source or product Best fit Published characteristics Important checks
NASA HLS vegetation-index suite Harmonized Landsat/Sentinel-2 monitoring at local to landscape scale, especially when several indices are needed 30-meter snapshots; NASA reports a global average revisit of less than 1.6 days for the combined record; nine indices: NDVI, EVI, SAVI, MSAVI, NDMI, NDWI, NBR, NBR2 and TVI The revisit is a global average, not a cloud-free guarantee. The HLS project describes about 1.7 days of product latency when source and auxiliary data arrive in time. Historical processing is scheduled for completion in 2026, so verify that your dates and location are complete.
Sentinel-2 MSI Local detail, direct Copernicus scenes and workflows that retain sensor-specific data Copernicus products are freely available through the Copernicus Data Space Ecosystem. NASA’s described Sentinel-2 NDVI product is 10 meters and uses Band 8 (near-infrared) and Band 4 (red) Screen every scene for cloud and shadow. NASA cautions that the described NDVI product may be experimental or research-grade and says its data are not guaranteed to be consistently available or routinely updated.
Landsat Collection 2 Long historical records, surface reflectance and Landsat-specific time series For Landsat 8 and 9, USGS-derived NDVI uses Band 5 (near-infrared) and Band 4 (red). The NDVI output uses a 0.0001 scale factor Prefer Tier 1 scenes for time-series work. Use the Collection 2 pixel-quality and radiometric-saturation/terrain QA bands, and distinguish Tier 2 scenes from Tier 1 rather than silently mixing them.
MODIS vegetation indices Regional, continental or global patterns where regular composites matter more than parcel-scale detail Products are available at 250 m, 500 m, 1 km and 0.05-degree grids. Vegetation indices are supplied as 16-day or monthly products; Terra and Aqua records are phased eight days apart Read the quality layer and composite period. The algorithm filters low-quality values and selects a representative view from the remaining observations, so an apparent change can reflect the composite selection as well as vegetation.

When HLS is the most practical starting point

NASA’s Harmonized Landsat Sentinel-2 project puts Landsat and Sentinel-2 observations into a common 30-meter framework. Its vegetation-index suite is useful when one project needs more than greenness alone: NDMI and NDWI support moisture questions, NBR and NBR2 help characterize fire or other disturbance, and SAVI or MSAVI can be useful where exposed soil affects a simple NDVI signal. EVI and TVI provide additional alternatives to a single ratio.

NASA describes HLS vegetation-index snapshots at 30 meters and a global average revisit under 1.6 days. That figure combines the contributing missions and averages globally; it does not mean a particular field will have a cloud-free pixel every 1.6 days. Cloud screening, scene overlap, solar conditions and local weather determine the usable record.

The HLS project reports a product latency of about 1.7 days when the required source and auxiliary data arrive on time. Treat that as a conditional processing characteristic, not a service-level guarantee. The project also states that historical processing is underway and scheduled for completion in 2026. Before building a historical baseline, check the current status for the exact tile and dates you need.

HLS is archived through NASA’s Land Processes Distributed Active Archive Center and can be downloaded or processed with cloud-native tools. Read the product guide for collection, tile, band and QA definitions before automating downloads; a harmonized product still has product-specific masks, fill values and scaling.

When Sentinel-2 MSI is the better choice

Choose Sentinel-2 when 10-meter detail, direct access to Copernicus scenes or a sensor-specific workflow is more important than harmonizing multiple missions. The Copernicus Data Space Ecosystem provides the products without a purchase license, and you can work from surface-reflectance scenes rather than relying on a precomputed index.

NASA’s described Sentinel-2 NDVI entry uses Band 8 for near-infrared and Band 4 for red at 10-meter resolution. Confirm the product’s band-resolution and processing definitions before calculating an index; Sentinel-2 has multiple bands and not every band has the same native pixel size.

Do not assume that a catalog entry is an operational monitoring service. NASA’s Sentinel-2 NDVI page says: These data are not guaranteed to be consistently available or routinely updated. The page also cautions that products may be experimental or research-grade. For a production alert system, inspect the current product documentation, update history and failure behavior, and maintain a fallback workflow based on the underlying scenes if appropriate.

A nominal satellite pass is not equivalent to a clear observation. Build cloud and shadow screening into the workflow, and retain the quality mask with every index value so later users can tell whether a low or high value came from vegetation or a compromised pixel.

When Landsat Collection 2 is the right foundation

Landsat is often the most defensible choice when you need a long, documented surface-reflectance record and want to control the processing. USGS identifies Tier 1 scenes as the highest available data quality and suitable for time-series analysis. Tier 2 scenes do not meet the Tier 1 geometric specification; causes can include less accurate orbital information, cloud cover, insufficient ground control or other conditions. Do not mix tiers without recording that decision and assessing its effect on your analysis.

For Landsat 8 and 9, USGS’s surface-reflectance-derived NDVI uses Band 5 (near-infrared) and Band 4 (red). The NDVI output is encoded with a 0.0001 scale factor, so read the metadata and convert stored integers before interpreting values as a ratio. A product’s scale factor is not a universal convention: never apply the Landsat factor to Sentinel-2, HLS or MODIS values unless that product’s documentation specifies it.

Collection 2 includes pixel-quality and radiometric-saturation/terrain QA files. Use them to remove fill, clouds, cloud shadows and other invalid observations, and inspect saturation and terrain flags when working in bright, steep or high-contrast areas. Keep the scene ID, collection, processing date, tier and QA rules in your analysis record.

When MODIS is preferable to finer-resolution imagery

MODIS vegetation-index products trade spatial detail for regular, consistent composites. NASA lists 250-meter, 500-meter, 1-kilometer and 0.05-degree grids, with 16-day and monthly vegetation-index products. Terra and Aqua records are phased eight days apart, which can provide a more regular broad-area sequence than a single platform.

This design suits regional drought context, continental phenology, ecosystem studies and global comparisons. It is not a substitute for 10- or 30-meter data when a field, narrow riparian strip or small fire scar must be resolved. A MODIS pixel can contain several land covers, so interpret its index as an aggregate signal.

MODIS processing uses quality metrics to filter low-quality values and selects a representative view from the remaining good observations. Always carry the quality layer and the composite period into your analysis. A 16-day value is not an instantaneous measurement; abrupt weather or land-cover changes can be smoothed, delayed or represented by the best available observation within the period.

A step-by-step workflow for finding and using reliable data

  1. Write the decision in one sentence. For example: “Detect field-level crop stress during the growing season,” “measure forest disturbance over 20 years,” or “track regional drought every month.” This prevents choosing a product solely because it has the finest advertised resolution.
  2. Define the area of interest and minimum feature size. Record the boundary, coordinate reference system and the smallest patch that must be distinguished. A 10-meter pixel does not guarantee 10-meter mapping accuracy when the target is mixed with roads, soil or neighboring vegetation.
  3. Set the observation and delivery requirement. Specify the date range, acceptable gap between usable observations and maximum processing delay. Distinguish a nominal revisit, a composite interval and the number of cloud-free observations you actually expect.
  4. Select a product family. Start with HLS for harmonized 30-meter observations and multiple indices; Sentinel-2 for 10-meter Copernicus scenes and direct control; Landsat Collection 2 for documented surface reflectance and long time series; or MODIS for broad-area composites.
  5. Use the official archive and documentation. Obtain Sentinel-2 products through the Copernicus Data Space Ecosystem, HLS through NASA’s Land Processes Distributed Active Archive Center, and Landsat products through USGS-described access routes. Read the product guide before downloading a large archive.
  6. Verify mission, collection and date coverage. Check that the product version, processing baseline, mission start, historical reprocessing status and tile or path/row cover the exact area and period. HLS historical processing status is especially important for a baseline that extends through 2026.
  7. Download a small test set first. Select several dates spanning clear, cloudy and transitional conditions. Open the reflectance or index bands, inspect data types and ranges, and confirm that the geographic footprint aligns with your boundary.
  8. Apply the product’s QA masks. Remove fill and invalid pixels, clouds and cloud shadows where flags are available. For Landsat, inspect pixel-quality, saturation and terrain-related QA. For MODIS, use the quality metrics that identify low-quality or unsuitable composite values. Save the mask, not just the filtered result.
  9. Confirm bands and scaling. For Sentinel-2 NDVI as described by NASA, use Band 8 and Band 4. For Landsat 8-9 derived NDVI, use Band 5 and Band 4 and honor the 0.0001 output scale factor. Follow HLS or MODIS metadata for their own band names and encodings.
  10. Calculate or select the index consistently. NDVI is calculated as (NIR - red) / (NIR + red). Use the same index definition, scale conversion, mask and date-comparison rule throughout a time series. Do not compare a surface-reflectance calculation with a precomputed composite as though they were identical measurements.
  11. Composite only after quality screening. If you create weekly, monthly or seasonal summaries, document whether you used a median, maximum, mean or another statistic and how many valid observations contributed. A composite made from unmasked clouds can produce a convincing but false vegetation signal.
  12. Compare like with like. Use the same geographic boundary, comparable seasons or phenological stages, consistent index definitions and comparable quality thresholds. If you combine sensors, test for offsets caused by different bandpasses, resolutions, atmospheric corrections, viewing geometry and compositing windows.
  13. Validate the interpretation. Compare unusual changes with field observations, weather, management records, fire boundaries, water levels or other independent evidence. A satellite index is an observation of surface reflectance, not a direct diagnosis of plant health.
  14. Record provenance. Store the source, collection or product version, scene or tile identifier, acquisition and processing dates, scale factors, QA rules, index formula, software version and any gap-filling or compositing choices.

How to calculate and interpret NDVI without overclaiming

NDVI uses the contrast between strong vegetation reflectance in near-infrared wavelengths and absorption in the red band:

NDVI = (NIR − red) / (NIR + red)

The ratio is useful for detecting relative greenness, but it is not a direct measurement of biomass, yield, species identity or plant health. Vegetation type, growth stage, canopy density, soil background, atmosphere, surface moisture, clouds and shadows all affect the observed value. A low value can represent sparse vegetation, exposed soil, dry vegetation, water or a contaminated pixel; a high value can reflect dense green cover without proving that plants are free of stress.

Use context and comparable timing

Compare the same location at comparable seasons or phenological stages. A spring-to-summer increase may be normal growth, while a change between different months may simply reflect seasonal structure. For a disturbance analysis, establish a pre-event baseline and inspect the quality and weather conditions of both pre- and post-event observations.

Choose another index when NDVI’s limits matter

  • EVI: NASA describes EVI as improving sensitivity in dense vegetation, where NDVI can become less responsive.
  • SAVI or MSAVI: These can help where exposed soil contributes substantially to the pixel signal; HLS includes both.
  • NDMI or NDWI: Moisture-oriented indices can add information when water stress or canopy moisture is central to the question.
  • NBR or NBR2: These are useful for burn and disturbance analysis, subject to appropriate pre- and post-event quality screening.

Use multiple indices as complementary evidence, not as interchangeable health scores. A moisture change, a fire-related change and a greenness change can occur at different times and have different physical explanations.

Reliability checks that prevent false vegetation signals

Clouds, shadows and haze

Cloud contamination can raise or lower an index depending on thickness and reflectance, while shadows often suppress the signal. Use the supplied QA classes or masks and inspect questionable dates visually. If an area has few clear observations, report the gap rather than filling it silently.

Fill values, saturation and terrain

Fill values are not zeros. Radiometric saturation can make a ratio unstable, and steep terrain can produce illumination differences or terrain-related flags. Remove or flag these pixels before calculating statistics.

Geometry and mixed pixels

Small shifts between dates can move a boundary, road or field edge into a pixel and create an apparent change. Tier 1 Landsat data are designed for time-series geometry, but any multi-source workflow should still check co-registration and avoid interpreting isolated edge pixels as ecological events.

Resolution and compositing differences

A 10-meter Sentinel-2 scene, a 30-meter HLS snapshot and a 250-meter MODIS composite describe different spatial and temporal supports. Do not average them together or compare their raw values without aggregating to a common grid, aligning dates or composite windows and documenting the transformation.

Product readiness and availability

Public access does not mean that every derived product is an operationally guaranteed service. NASA states that its data and products are freely available to commercial users, while the Sentinel-2 NDVI documentation warns about experimental or research-grade status and non-guaranteed updates. Check the terms and update policy of the specific product you use, and retain an underlying-scene fallback when continuity is critical.

A decision guide for typical projects

Field-level crop monitoring

Begin with Sentinel-2 for 10-meter detail or HLS for harmonized 30-meter observations and a broader index set. Require cloud and shadow masks, compare the same crop stage and use field boundaries that exclude edges. If the decision is irrigation or moisture related, add a moisture-oriented index rather than relying on NDVI alone.

Forest disturbance over many years

Use Landsat Collection 2 Tier 1 surface reflectance when a documented historical record and control over processing are priorities. HLS can add frequent harmonized observations and disturbance indices, but verify historical completeness for the dates you need. NBR or NBR2 may reveal burn-related change more directly than NDVI.

Regional drought or ecosystem context

MODIS 16-day or monthly products are appropriate when broad, regular composites outweigh parcel-scale detail. Preserve the quality layer and explain the composite period in every map or chart. Pair the index with weather or moisture information before attributing a regional change to drought.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Global or continental trend analysis

Favor a product with consistent global coverage and a clearly documented long record. MODIS is designed for this scale; HLS can provide finer detail where its coverage and historical processing status meet the study period. Harmonize spatial grids and seasonal windows before comparing regions.

What “reliable” should mean in a published monitoring result

Reliability is not a single accuracy percentage. It is a chain of documented choices: an appropriate spatial scale, enough usable observations, a known product version, correct band and scale handling, defensible QA masking, comparable dates, and an interpretation supported by independent context. A finely resolved image with poor cloud screening can be less reliable than a coarser composite with consistent quality control.

For each reported value or map, be able to answer: Which mission and product produced it? What collection and processing version were used? Which pixels were excluded and why? How many valid observations contributed? Were the dates and seasons comparable? Could soil, moisture, atmosphere, geometry or mixed land cover explain the change? Those answers make the result auditable and prevent a visually persuasive but unsupported vegetation claim.

Bottom line

Choose HLS when harmonized 30-meter observations and multiple indices are valuable; Sentinel-2 when 10-meter local detail and direct Copernicus scenes matter; Landsat Collection 2 when a controlled, long surface-reflectance record is the priority; and MODIS when broad-area, regular composites are sufficient. In every case, reliability comes from checking coverage and product status, applying QA masks, honoring band definitions and scale factors, comparing like seasons and resolutions, and interpreting NDVI as contextual reflectance information rather than a standalone plant-health diagnosis.
