For a current, evidence-based answer about an asteroid, start with NASA/JPL’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS). Check the object’s designation, the date of the assessment, whether it is confirmed, its close-approach and impact-risk pages, and the uncertainty behind the orbit. Use Sentry for confirmed objects being monitored for possible impacts over roughly 100 years, and understand that Scout handles shorter-term, preliminary assessments of unconfirmed candidates. A listing means a possible trajectory has been identified from current observations—not that an impact is certain.
The safest habit is to treat every risk number as a dated snapshot. Open the current official record, identify whether it is a Scout or Sentry result, and read the observation context before repeating a headline. NASA’s public pages let readers follow the path from discovery and follow-up observations to an orbit calculation and an updated risk assessment.
What makes asteroid information reliable?
Reliable asteroid information has four characteristics: it identifies the object precisely, gives the date of the calculation, explains whether the object is confirmed, and links to the underlying orbital assessment. Headlines that omit those details can turn a changing probability into an apparently definite prediction.

NASA describes near-Earth-object work as a chain: a survey discovers a moving point of light; positions are reported to the Minor Planet Center; follow-up telescopes collect more positions; and CNEOS computes an orbit and searches for future close approaches or impacts. Each link in that chain matters when you evaluate a claim.

NASA/JPL’s CNEOS is the primary public destination for orbit, close-approach and impact-risk information. NASA’s Near-Earth Object Observations Program and the Minor Planet Center explain how observations enter the system, while NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office coordinates the International Asteroid Warning Network (IAWN).
Reliability also means matching the source to the question. A general news story may summarize an event, but the CNEOS object page is the place to verify a probability or date. The Minor Planet Center’s material helps explain discovery and confirmation, while NASA’s public-facing Asteroid Watch pages are useful for scheduled close approaches. These pages complement one another rather than replacing one another.
Which official pages should you use?
| Resource | What it covers | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Sentry | Long-term impact monitoring for confirmed near-Earth objects, typically searching about 100 years into the future | When an identified asteroid appears on an impact-risk list or you need its current probability and possible dates |
| Scout | Shorter-term, preliminary assessments of unconfirmed candidates | When a report concerns a newly detected object that has not yet been confirmed |
| CNEOS | Orbit solutions, close approaches and impact-risk information | For the object’s authoritative detail pages and calculation context |
| JPL Asteroid Watch | Upcoming asteroid close approaches and public-facing mission information | To check scheduled flybys and NASA’s plain-language updates |
| NASA Near-Earth Object Observations Program | How surveys, follow-up observations and reporting support planetary defense | To understand where an orbit and risk estimate come from |
| NASA Science planetary-defense overview | Explanation of the observation and analysis pipeline | For background and dated NASA examples |
A near-Earth object is defined by its orbit bringing it within 120 million miles (195 million kilometers) of the Sun, according to NASA’s Asteroid Watch and a 2025 NASA Science article. That definition does not mean the object is on an Earth-impacting path; it identifies a population that merits tracking.

Scout is designed to work with preliminary, unconfirmed detections and a shorter time horizon. Sentry is the long-term system for confirmed objects. A post that says an asteroid is “on NASA’s list” without identifying which system may be collapsing two different stages of the process into one alarming phrase.
How to verify an asteroid-impact claim
- Capture the exact designation and claim date. Record the object’s official designation (for example, a year-and-letter code) and when the article, video or post was published. Probabilities and close-approach dates can change, so a number without a date is incomplete.
- Determine whether the object is confirmed. A newly reported candidate may still be in the discovery workflow. Scout is designed for preliminary, short-horizon assessments of unconfirmed candidates; Sentry monitors confirmed objects over a long horizon.
- Search CNEOS by designation. Use the CNEOS pages for the object’s orbit, close approaches and impact risk. Check that the designation in the official record exactly matches the one in the report. Similar-looking designations can refer to different objects, so do not rely on a nickname alone.
- Read the observation context. An orbit is inferred from measured positions. A short observation arc leaves more possible orbits; additional observations narrow that range. Read whether the page reflects a first estimate or a later, better-constrained solution.
- Record the time horizon and probability. Note the possible impact date or date range, the stated probability and any uncertainty information. Do not compare a short-term Scout value with a long-term Sentry value as if they were the same metric.
- Identify the scale shown. Torino is intended for public communication; Palermo is for technical comparison. A scale number has meaning only with its definition, date and accompanying probability.
- Check the page’s update date before sharing. Re-open the official record immediately before repeating a risk figure or close-approach date. The current value may no longer match an older screenshot or headline.
When comparing two reports, use the same five questions each time: Is the object confirmed? What date and observation set does the report use? What probability and uncertainty are stated? What future time horizon is being searched? Which scale, if any, is displayed? This prevents a historical value, a preliminary candidate and a current confirmed assessment from being treated as interchangeable.
What an impact-risk listing actually means
An impact-risk listing says that, within the set of trajectories allowed by current observations, at least one possible future path intersects Earth. It is a statement about probability and uncertainty, not a prediction that impact will happen.
Early in an object’s observation history, the possible-orbit region can be wide. A small fraction of that region may cross Earth even when most trajectories do not, producing a noticeable initial probability. Follow-up observations can remove those trajectories from consideration. CNEOS explains that removal from Sentry is normal and does not mean the earlier assessment was an error; it means the orbit became better constrained.

NASA’s 2021 description of the monitoring system puts the underlying principle plainly: “Asteroids are extremely predictable celestial bodies that obey the laws of physics and follow knowable orbital paths around the Sun.” Predictable physics does not eliminate measurement uncertainty. The quality of a forecast depends on how many accurate observations constrain the orbit and on how far into the future the calculation projects.
A risk table therefore should not be read like a timetable. It does not say that an object is currently headed toward a confirmed collision. It reports what the current orbit solution permits, including very unlikely paths, and it can change when the allowed region changes. The useful question is not simply “Is it on the list?” but “What does the latest dated assessment say, and how well is the orbit constrained?”
Why an asteroid’s probability can rise or fall
More observations change the allowable orbit
Every reported position adds a constraint. Follow-up observations extend the time span of the data and reduce the number of orbital solutions that fit. A possible impact corridor can therefore shrink, move or disappear.
New observations can remove a risk
When a candidate drops off Sentry, that is usually the expected result of improved astrometry. It is not evidence that officials concealed a danger or that the original calculation was careless. The initial result reflected the information available at that time.
Longer horizons magnify small uncertainties
A tiny difference in the fitted orbit can produce a larger positional difference decades later. That is why Sentry searches a long horizon and why an apparently small early probability should not be read as a fixed forecast.
Measurements and assumptions are revised
New data can alter the estimated orbit, size and close-approach geometry. Revisions are a normal part of monitoring, not a contradiction of the scientific method.
Different systems answer different timing questions
Scout’s short-term assessment is useful while a candidate is still being confirmed. Sentry’s long-term search begins with a confirmed object and looks for possible impacts across its stated horizon. A change from a Scout notice to a Sentry entry is a change in status and method, not automatically a worsening of the hazard.

How to read Torino, Palermo and diameter values
Torino Scale
Torino is designed primarily for public communication. It combines the likelihood of an impact with the potential severity in a single communication framework. Use the scale together with the object’s date, probability and explanation; a Torino value copied without that context can mislead.
Palermo Technical Scale
Palermo is intended for technical comparison between impact possibilities and the background impact probability from the near-Earth-object population. It is not a public danger score. A negative or positive value cannot be interpreted responsibly without the page’s definitions and reference date.
Estimated diameter
Diameter may be approximate when an object’s albedo—the fraction of sunlight its surface reflects—is unknown. Two objects with the same brightness can have different physical sizes if their surfaces reflect different amounts of light. Treat a diameter shown on a risk page as an estimate with the stated uncertainty, not as a tape-measured dimension.
Do not use a diameter alone to infer a current impact probability. Size, orbit, encounter geometry, observation quality and the calculation date all matter. If a story gives a size but no designation or official assessment, it has not supplied enough information to verify the risk claim.
How discovery and warning systems fit together
Surveys scan the sky for moving objects. The Minor Planet Center’s NEO Confirmation Page is part of the discovery and confirmation workflow: it helps observers coordinate follow-up positions for newly reported candidates. Once enough observations support an orbit, CNEOS can produce the long-term Sentry analysis.

NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office coordinates IAWN, the international network for sharing asteroid observations and warnings. Coordination does not turn a preliminary report into a confirmed impact; it helps qualified organizations exchange the data needed to improve the orbit and communicate consistently.
NASA’s Near-Earth Object Observations Program explains why follow-up matters. A single detection supplies only a limited piece of an orbit. Additional positions collected by professional observers lengthen the observation arc, allowing the computed path and future close approaches to be refined. The public can see the resulting assessment even though the observing and orbit-fitting work requires specialized facilities.

Professional surveys and follow-up facilities use specialized telescopes, but a consumer telescope is not needed to check an official assessment. The authoritative calculation is available through the public CNEOS and NASA pages. There is no need to purchase observing equipment, a subscription or a physical product simply to verify a current risk listing.
A dated example: asteroid 2024 YR4
NASA Science reported that the estimated impact probability for asteroid 2024 YR4 peaked above 3% on February 18, 2025. That figure belongs to that dated assessment. It must not be presented as the object’s current risk without checking its latest CNEOS record.
The example illustrates why dates matter: an early probability can attract headlines, while later observations may substantially change or eliminate the listed risk. When you cite a historical number, include the object designation, the exact date and the fact that it is historical.
A careful citation would distinguish “NASA reported a peak above 3% on February 18, 2025” from “the asteroid currently has a probability above 3%.” The first is a dated historical statement; the second requires a fresh check of the live official record and may be wrong if the assessment has changed.
Common mistakes when checking asteroid news
- Using an undated screenshot. A risk table can change after new observations. Open the live CNEOS page and note its update date.
- Confusing a candidate with a confirmed object. Scout’s preliminary assessment is not equivalent to a Sentry listing.
- Treating “on the risk list” as “will hit.” The list represents possible trajectories under current uncertainty.
- Repeating a historical peak as a current value. The 2024 YR4 value above 3% was reported for February 18, 2025; it is not a timeless statistic.
- Comparing Torino and Palermo numbers directly. They serve different audiences and purposes.
- Ignoring the observation arc. A short arc generally leaves more orbital possibilities than a long sequence of follow-up measurements.
- Assuming diameter is exact. Unknown albedo can make a brightness-derived size estimate uncertain.
- Relying on a single sensational headline. Check the designation and then read the official orbit and risk pages.
- Mixing dates from different updates. A probability from one assessment and a close-approach date from another may not describe the same orbit solution.
- Assuming removal proves a mistake. CNEOS says removal from Sentry is a normal outcome as observations improve.
A practical checklist for sharing a risk claim
- Object designation copied exactly
- Publication and assessment dates recorded
- Confirmed status checked
- CNEOS Sentry or Scout page opened, as appropriate
- Impact probability and possible date copied with their qualifications
- Observation context and uncertainty read
- Torino or Palermo identified, if shown
- Diameter treated as an estimate when albedo is unknown
- Claim rechecked immediately before reposting
If a post does not provide enough information to complete this checklist, describe it as unverified rather than filling in the gaps from memory. Include the link and access date when you pass the claim to someone else, so they can see which assessment you used.
How to follow updates without losing context
Bookmark the CNEOS Sentry introduction and risk pages, plus JPL Asteroid Watch. When an alert appears, begin with the official object record rather than a social-media summary. Save the date and wording of the assessment you consulted. On a later visit, compare the new date, probability, close-approach geometry and scale values instead of assuming that a changed number signals an error.

Note how the observation date, orbit solution, probability and possible encounter dates are presented. This turns a frightening headline into a traceable sequence of measurements and revisions.
What a responsible conclusion looks like
A sound summary names the object, cites the dated CNEOS assessment, states whether it is confirmed, gives the relevant probability and horizon, and explains that future observations can change the result. It avoids declaring certainty from a risk listing and avoids treating a removed listing as evidence of a prior mistake. For current asteroid information, the combination of CNEOS, NASA’s observations program and the Minor Planet Center’s confirmation workflow provides the traceable path from observation to public warning.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where can I check whether an asteroid might hit Earth?
Start with NASA/JPL CNEOS. Use the Sentry page for confirmed objects and the Scout system for preliminary assessments of unconfirmed candidates. Check the object designation and the page’s update date.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat does it mean if an asteroid is on NASA’s risk list?
It means that at least one trajectory allowed by current observations intersects Earth during the searched period. It is a probability statement under orbital uncertainty, not a declaration that impact is certain.
Why did an asteroid’s impact probability change?
New observations add measured positions, narrow the range of allowable orbits and can move or eliminate a possible impact path. Changes are a normal part of orbit refinement.
What is the difference between Sentry and Scout?
Scout evaluates newly detected, unconfirmed candidates over shorter horizons. Sentry monitors confirmed near-Earth objects for possible impacts, typically across about 100 years.
Should I worry when an object is removed from Sentry?
Removal is usually the expected result of better observations that rule out the previously allowed impact trajectories. CNEOS says it does not mean the earlier assessment was a mistake.
Do I need a telescope or paid service to verify asteroid risk?
No. Consumer observing equipment is not needed. Current orbit, close-approach and impact-risk information is available through public NASA/JPL CNEOS and NASA pages.
The Bottom Line
Verify the exact object and date at NASA/JPL CNEOS, distinguish Scout from Sentry, read the observation context, and treat every probability as an updateable assessment rather than a certainty.
