Use a layered approach: start with quality-reviewed station observations, add a gridded observation product or reanalysis for spatial continuity, and validate the exact variable and period against whatever surface observations exist. A reanalysis fills gaps with a physically coherent estimate; it does not convert a grid cell into a direct measurement at your site. Reliability changes with the variable, timescale, location, historical period, and observations assimilated.
What reliable climate data means in a data-sparse region
Reliability is fitness for a defined decision, not a permanent label attached to a dataset. A monthly temperature climatology, a daily flood analysis, a crop-water model, and a wind-resource assessment need different temporal detail, spatial scales, and error tolerances. Before downloading anything, write down the variable, geographic area, time step, historical period, and intended use.
- Variable: temperature, precipitation, wind, humidity, radiation, pressure, or a derived index.
- Spatial question: a station point, a watershed, a city, a farm, or a regional average.
- Temporal question: hourly values, daily extremes, monthly normals, seasonal totals, or long-term trends.
- Period: the exact years required and whether the period crosses major observing-system changes.
- Use: descriptive reporting, trend detection, hydrology, agriculture, infrastructure design, or a site-specific decision.
These choices determine whether a station record, gridded analysis, reanalysis, or a combination is defensible.

Station observations are local but uneven
Station measurements are the closest thing to a direct observation at a location, yet coverage and record quality vary. NASA describes NOAA/NCEI’s GHCN-Daily as an integrated archive of daily land-station summaries with common quality-assurance reviews. The archive contains more than 100,000 stations in 180 countries and territories. That is a global archive total, not evidence that a station exists near every study site or that every station has a complete record.

Individual records can contain non-climatic jumps when a station moves, instruments change, observing practices are modified, or records from different sources are merged. NASA notes that consistent time series are essential for climate research. Homogenization methods can identify and adjust such discontinuities, but the adjustments introduce their own uncertainty and should be documented.
Reanalysis supplies continuity, not a hidden thermometer
NOAA/NCEI defines reanalysis as using data-synthesis methods to incorporate different datasets into one regularly spaced grid. The system assimilates observations into a numerical model, producing spatially continuous fields that are easier to compare across years and regions. It also helps compensate for changes and biases among observing instruments over time.
A grid value is an estimate representing the model’s grid cell and assimilation system. It is not a measurement taken at your precise coordinates. A 31-kilometre grid, for example, describes ERA5’s spacing; it does not promise 31-kilometre local accuracy. Mountains, coastlines, urban heat islands, convective rainfall, and other features smaller than a grid cell can create substantial local differences.
A practical workflow for finding defensible data
1. Define the analysis before choosing a product
- Specify the variable and units, including whether precipitation means an instantaneous rate, an hourly accumulation, or a daily total.
- Set the temporal resolution and aggregation rules. A daily maximum cannot be reconstructed reliably from a monthly mean.
- Define the spatial support: station point, nearest grid cell, area average, elevation-adjusted location, or watershed statistic.
- Set the start and end dates and identify whether you need a baseline climatology, extremes, or a trend.
- Write the decision threshold. For example, a two-degree error may be acceptable for a regional narrative but unacceptable for a heat-health warning or equipment specification.
2. Inventory and screen station observations
Search quality-reviewed archives such as GHCN-Daily and national meteorological services for stations in, near, or climatologically similar to the study area. Record each station’s coordinates, elevation, instrument history, missing periods, and the percentage of complete observations for the variable and dates you will use.
- Check whether the station moved or changed instruments.
- Look for documented homogenization or break-point adjustments.
- Separate a short, nearly complete record from a long record with large gaps; neither is automatically superior.
- Keep the original station identifier and version so another analyst can reproduce the selection.
A nearby station is not necessarily representative if elevation, exposure, coastline, land cover, or urbanisation differs materially from the target location.
3. Add a gridded product or reanalysis
Where points are sparse, use a gridded observation product or reanalysis to obtain a consistent field and fill spatial gaps. Select a product whose variables, period, and resolution match the question. Reanalysis is especially useful for comparing the same variable across locations and for producing a continuous historical series, but the output remains model-assisted and observation-constrained rather than purely observed.
4. Compare provenance and resolution
Document what each product assimilates, how it is generated, and what its grid represents. ERA5 is a global reanalysis with hourly output and approximately 31-kilometre grid spacing. Copernicus warns that uncertainty is higher in early decades and in data-sparse areas, particularly before the satellite era. Its documentation also advises caution in trend analysis because observing-system changes can introduce inhomogeneities; ERA5-Land may be preferable for some higher-resolution land applications.

NASA POWER uses MERRA-2 assimilation data for its meteorological parameters. Its solar-resource values are inferred from satellite observations. POWER documentation provides source-specific resolution and uncertainty information, so do not assume that all POWER variables have identical accuracy or provenance.
5. Validate the variable you will actually use
Find a validation study that compares the selected dataset with surface observations for a stated geography, period, and variable. Examine bias, root-mean-square error, and correlation together. A high correlation can coexist with a systematic offset or large errors in individual events.
NASA POWER’s published comparison with NOAA/NCEI Integrated Surface Database observations used 2,599 stations. For 2001–2020, its aggregate hourly statistics were:
| Variable | RMSE | R-squared | What the figures represent |
|---|---|---|---|
| Temperature | 3.32 °C | 0.96 | Hourly MERRA-2 parameters compared with station observations |
| Precipitation | 1.24 mm | 0.06 | Hourly comparison over the same 2001–2020 evaluation period |
The same source reports daily statistics for 1981–2020:
| Variable | RMSE | R-squared | What the figures represent |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average temperature | 2.10 °C | 0.97 | Daily comparison against the evaluated station set |
| Precipitation | 3.69 mm/day | 0.39 | Daily comparison over 1981–2020 |
These are aggregate comparison statistics, not guarantees for an individual site. They also show why a blanket statement such as a product is accurate is misleading: temperature agreement is much stronger than precipitation agreement in these evaluations. NASA POWER states that its uncertainty estimates are based on comparisons with surface measurements.
6. Test local behavior when the decision is consequential
If the result affects flood design, crop insurance, public-health thresholds, renewable-energy siting, or another high-consequence decision, compare the candidate grid series with every credible nearby station. Calculate bias and error by season, elevation band, wet and dry regimes, and event intensity. Check whether errors are concentrated in the extremes that matter to your decision. If a local station is short, use it for validation rather than discarding it simply because it cannot supply the full historical period.
7. Record the choice so it can be reproduced
Your methods note should state the dataset and version, variable and units, station or grid-cell basis, coordinates, temporal aggregation, period, download date, processing steps, missing-value rules, validation stations and period, and known uncertainty. Preserve the raw files and scripts or spreadsheet formulas used to aggregate them.

How to compare candidate products systematically
Put every candidate on the same comparison sheet before selecting one. A product can be excellent on one axis and unsuitable on another.
- Provenance and inputs: identify whether values are direct station observations, model estimates constrained by assimilation, satellite-derived estimates, or a blend. List the observation types and major changes in the observing system.
- Variable coverage: confirm that the product supplies the exact variable, units, accumulation convention, and derived statistic you need. Temperature, precipitation, wind, and radiation should not be treated as interchangeable quality classes.
- Spatial representation: record grid spacing, land-sea treatment, elevation representation, and whether the published value is a cell average or an interpolated point. A smaller nominal cell does not automatically resolve local terrain or exposure.
- Temporal detail: distinguish native hourly or subdaily output from daily or monthly summaries created after download. Check time zones, timestamps, and whether an accumulation covers the beginning or end of a day.
- Historical coverage: verify the first and last usable dates and note whether the period precedes dense satellite observations. Early decades can carry higher uncertainty even when the archive is continuous.
- Validation design: read the geography, station type, evaluation years, variable definition, and aggregation used in the comparison. Results from a broad station sample should be treated as context, not a local guarantee.
- Uncertainty documentation: look for bias, RMSE, correlation, confidence information, and known limitations. Prefer documentation that reports metrics separately by variable and timescale.
- Access and reproducibility: record the download endpoint or archive version, file format, license, and any processing required. A convenient interface is useful only if another analyst can retrieve the same version and reproduce the aggregation.
Read uncertainty statements literally
An uncertainty estimate based on comparisons with surface measurements describes how a product performed in that comparison. It does not supply a universal error bar for every location, season, or event. Aggregate RMSE is expressed in the variable’s units and summarizes typical discrepancy; it does not show whether a few severe events dominate the error. R-squared describes shared variation, not agreement in magnitude. A high value can accompany a persistent warm or wet bias, while a low value for precipitation can reflect the difficulty of matching the timing and location of convective events.
Report the metric that matters to the decision. For a temperature threshold, show temperature bias and errors near the threshold. For flood work, inspect rainfall accumulations and intensities rather than relying on temperature performance. For a regional mean, explain how averaging changes the spatial support and whether local extremes are intentionally smoothed.
When no station is truly nearby
Do not hide the absence of a representative station behind a precise-looking coordinate. Select stations with similar elevation, exposure, coastline setting, and land cover when possible, and show those differences explicitly. Compare more than one candidate grid cell or product if the result is consequential, then report the spread as a sensitivity range. If the available record is short, use overlapping dates to test the reanalysis or grid product and state that the validation period is limited. A local check cannot prove that the same error applies throughout an unobserved area, but it can reveal obvious bias and prevent unsupported confidence.
Combining sources without overstating precision
Use stations to anchor and test the gridded record, not to imply that every grid value has been measured. Keep the station series and the model-assisted series identifiable in files and figures. If you apply an adjustment or bias correction, describe the reference stations, overlap period, method, and residual error; otherwise present the unadjusted comparison. Do not average products simply because they disagree: first determine whether their variables, timestamps, spatial supports, and input observations are comparable.

| Option | Strength in sparse regions | Important limitation | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quality-reviewed station archive such as GHCN-Daily | Direct daily land observations with common quality-assurance reviews; more than 100,000 stations globally in the archive | Coverage and completeness are uneven; a global station count does not imply a nearby, continuous record | Local checks, bias evaluation, and analyses where a screened station is representative |
| ERA5 reanalysis | Hourly, globally gridded record at about 31 km spacing with consistent fields | Grid estimates are not point measurements; uncertainty rises in early decades and data-sparse areas, and observing-system changes complicate some trends | Regional comparison, continuous time series, and analyses needing hourly fields |
| ERA5-Land | Can be preferable for some higher-resolution land applications | Suitability still depends on variable, period, terrain, and local validation | Land-focused work where its resolution and surface representation match the question |
| NASA POWER | Convenient access to meteorological parameters from MERRA-2 and satellite-inferred solar resources, with published uncertainty and validation information | Performance differs by variable and timescale; precipitation agreement in the cited evaluations was substantially weaker than temperature agreement | Exploratory analysis and applications for which the documented variable-specific performance is adequate |
Neither ERA5 nor NASA POWER is a universal winner. The defensible choice is the one whose provenance, resolution, historical coverage, validation design, uncertainty information, and access format match your stated use.
Matching the dataset to the climate question
Monthly climatology or regional averages
A reanalysis or gridded observation product can provide useful continuity when station points are sparse. Aggregate to the same monthly definition at every location, and compare the resulting climatology with available stations. Report whether the result describes a grid-cell mean, an area average, or a station value.

Daily extremes and event thresholds
Daily or hourly resolution is necessary, but fine time steps do not guarantee accurate extremes. Convective rainfall, fog, mountain winds, and urban heat can vary sharply within one grid cell. Validate the event type and percentile that drive the decision, not only the mean temperature or total precipitation.
Long-term trends
Use a period with a defensible observing history and inspect documentation for changes in the observing system. Early reanalysis decades and data-sparse regions deserve particular caution. Compare trends with homogenized station series where possible, and distinguish a model or assimilation discontinuity from a climate signal.

Hydrology and precipitation
Precipitation often has lower local agreement than temperature, as illustrated by the POWER statistics. For runoff, reservoir design, or flood studies, evaluate accumulation periods, storm intensity, seasonality, and catchment averages. A product that performs well for daily temperature may be unsuitable for storm rainfall without additional correction or local observations.
Agriculture and land-surface applications
Check radiation, humidity, wind, and soil or land-surface variables separately. NASA POWER’s solar values are inferred from satellite observations, while its meteorological parameters use MERRA-2 assimilation data; the two groups therefore have different provenance and uncertainty considerations. Elevation and land-cover differences between a grid cell and a field can dominate the error.
Site-specific engineering or operational decisions
Use the nearest credible station and a gridded product together, then quantify the difference at the site. If no source can demonstrate adequate local performance, present a range or scenario analysis rather than a single number with false precision.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Treating grid spacing as accuracy: state the grid size and separately report validation error and representativeness limits.
- Using a global station count as proof of local coverage: show the actual station map, record completeness, and distance or elevation difference for your study area.
- Rating a product with one correlation value: include bias and RMSE, and split results by variable, season, and event type.
- Assuming all variables in one product perform alike: validate temperature, precipitation, radiation, and wind independently.
- Ignoring station discontinuities: inspect relocation, equipment, and source-change metadata and use homogenized series where appropriate.
- Mixing periods without disclosure: label the exact evaluation years; the POWER figures above refer to 2001–2020 for hourly data and 1981–2020 for daily data.
- Interpolating extremes from monthly means: obtain daily or hourly data and test the actual threshold or return-period statistic.
- Reporting excessive decimals: retain computational precision internally but round the published result to a level justified by measurement and validation uncertainty.
A defensible reporting template
Use a statement that lets a reader understand exactly what the number means: We used [dataset and version], [variable and units], from [start date] through [end date], taking the value from [station identifier or grid cell/area] at [temporal aggregation]. The series was compared with [station archive and station set] over [validation period]. Reported uncertainty is [bias, RMSE, or other metric], and the main limitations are [coverage, terrain, early-period, or variable-specific concerns]. Keep variable syntax inside code when adapting the template, and replace every field with an actual documented value.

Decision checklist
- Have you defined the variable, spatial support, time step, period, and use?
- Did you inventory nearby stations and check completeness, moves, instruments, and homogenization?
- Is the gridded product’s provenance and resolution appropriate to the question?
- Did you distinguish a grid-cell estimate from a local observation?
- Did you find validation for the same variable, geography, timescale, and period?
- Did you review bias and RMSE as well as correlation?
- Did you test the product against available local observations?
- Have you documented version, processing, aggregation, missing data, and uncertainty?
The most defensible result in a poorly observed region is usually a documented combination: screened observations for local anchoring, a gridded or reanalysis product for continuity, and variable-specific validation that makes the remaining uncertainty visible.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does ERA5’s approximately 31-kilometre spacing mean it is accurate within 31 kilometres of my site?
No. The spacing describes the distance between grid points, not local accuracy. Terrain, coastlines, urban areas, and convective rainfall can vary substantially within one cell. Compare the cell with nearby observations and report representativeness limits separately from grid spacing.
Is a GHCN-Daily archive count of more than 100,000 stations proof that my region is well covered?
No. NASA’s figure covers 180 countries and territories across the entire archive. Your study area may still have no nearby station, short records, or major gaps. Map the actual stations, inspect completeness, and check elevation, exposure, and instrument history.
Why can temperature validation be strong while precipitation validation is weak?
Temperature generally varies more smoothly than rainfall at small scales. In NASA POWER comparisons using 2,599 stations, hourly temperature had RMSE 3.32 °C and R-squared 0.96, while hourly precipitation had RMSE 1.24 mm and R-squared 0.06 for 2001–2020. These aggregate results are not site-specific guarantees.

Which is better for a sparse region, ERA5 or NASA POWER?
Neither is universally best. ERA5 provides hourly global fields at about 31-kilometre spacing, while POWER provides MERRA-2 meteorological parameters and satellite-inferred solar resources with variable-specific documentation. Choose by provenance, variable, period, resolution, validation, uncertainty, and reproducibility, then test the choice locally.
Can I use a reanalysis for a long-term trend?
You can, but inspect observing-system changes and the product’s warnings first. Copernicus notes higher uncertainty in early decades and data-sparse regions and advises caution where changing inputs may create inhomogeneities. Compare with homogenized station series where possible and explain any remaining discontinuity risk.
What should I report so another analyst can reproduce my climate value?
Name the dataset and version, variable and units, station or grid-cell coordinates, temporal aggregation, start and end dates, download date, missing-value rules, processing steps, validation stations and period, error metrics, and known limitations. Preserve the original files and calculation code or formulas.
The Bottom Line
For sparse-station regions, combine screened station observations with a gridded product or reanalysis, then validate the exact variable, timescale, period, and location. Treat grid values as estimates, document provenance and uncertainty, and let local performance—not convenience or nominal resolution—determine how confidently you use the result.
