You can keep an app useful without giving it unrestricted access or accepting constant interruptions. Review privacy permissions separately from notification controls: permissions determine which data or device features an app can use, while notification settings determine which alerts appear and how they are presented.
Permissions and notifications are separate controls
An app can have permission to use your location, calendar, microphone, contacts, camera or motion data and still be completely silent. Conversely, an app can send frequent alerts without having access to your photos, contacts or location. Changing one control does not automatically change the other.
- Privacy permissions: Decide whether an app may access a particular category of information or a device capability.
- Tracking permissions: On iPhone, separately decide whether apps may ask to track activity across companies’ apps and websites.
- Notification controls: Decide whether an app may alert you, and whether an alert uses a banner, sound, lock-screen content or a notification-center entry.
- Focus or Do Not Disturb controls: Temporarily suppress alerts according to a schedule or situation, with selected exceptions.
Control names and locations vary by operating-system version, device manufacturer and app. If a label below is different on your device, use the Settings search field for terms such as permissions, tracking, notifications, Do Not Disturb or the name of the capability you want to review.
Make a quick plan before changing settings
Start with the outcome you want rather than switching every control off. For each app, answer these questions:

- What is the app’s job? A navigation app may need location while in use; a calendar app may need calendar access. An unrelated request deserves more scrutiny.
- Which data or feature is genuinely needed? Grant only the category that supports the job. Do not treat a request for several categories as proof that every category is necessary.
- Which interruption is the problem? Decide whether you want fewer alerts, no sound, no pop-up banners, no lock-screen details or only a quiet period.
- Is the change permanent or temporary? Revoke an unnecessary permission for a lasting privacy change; use a scheduled focus or Do Not Disturb period for meetings, sleep or concentrated work.
Write down an app’s current behavior before changing it. That makes it easier to identify which switch solved the problem and to restore one setting if a feature stops working.
iPhone: review tracking and information access
Turn off or limit app tracking
Tracking is a distinct iPhone control, not a general permission switch. Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking. The list contains apps that have requested tracking permission. You can change the choice for an individual app.
To prevent apps from asking at all, turn off Allow Apps to Request to Track on that screen. This stops future requests; it does not revoke unrelated access such as a permission to use the camera or calendar, and it does not silence notifications.

Review permissions by information category
For access to information or device features, open Settings > Privacy & Security and select a category such as Calendars, Reminders or Motion & Fitness. Apple lists the apps that requested access in that category. Turn access on or off for each app.

Review categories one at a time. If an app’s core function still works without a category, leave that access off. If a feature fails after revocation, return to the same category and decide whether the feature is worth the access it requires.
Use App Privacy Report as an audit
App Privacy Report provides evidence about activity after permissions have been granted. Apple describes it this way: “The App Privacy Report shows you how apps are using the permissions you granted them and shows you their network activity.” It is a review tool, not a guarantee that every aspect of an app’s behavior will be visible. Use it to spot activity that merits a closer look, then adjust the relevant permission or the app’s own account settings.
What this guide does not assume about iPhone notifications
Notification menu labels and paths are not established in the reviewed Apple material for this guide. Do not infer that changing Tracking or a privacy category will stop alerts. Use the current iPhone Settings search for notifications, or the app’s own notification preferences, to locate the available alert controls on your version of iOS.
Android: manage permissions per app or by category
Open one app’s permission list
Google’s documented per-app path is Settings > Apps > select the app > Permissions. If the app is not immediately visible, choose See all apps and then select it. Review each listed capability and choose the least access that still supports the feature you need.

Review every app that can use a permission
To audit a category rather than one app, open Security & Privacy > Privacy > Permission manager, choose the permission type and select an app. This view is useful when you have forgotten which apps were granted a capability.
Google’s examples show that location, camera and microphone can offer different choices, such as while-in-use, ask-every-time or don’t-allow. Location may also offer all-the-time access. These choices are not guaranteed for every permission, so use only the options your device actually presents.
Account for Android and manufacturer differences
Some of Google’s documented steps on Pixel devices apply only to Android 11 and later. Other manufacturers can rename screens or arrange them differently. If the path does not match, search Settings for the app name or Permission manager rather than enabling a broad category by guesswork.
Google lists notifications among Android permission types, but the material reviewed here does not provide a complete notification-channel workflow. Treat notification access as a separate task: use your device’s current Settings search and the app’s own controls, and do not assume that changing camera, microphone or location access will affect alert volume.

Windows 11: control privacy access
Change access to a capability
In Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Privacy & security. Select a capability such as Calendar or Contacts, then review the switches for individual apps. Turning off access prevents an app from using that related data or feature.
Work through capabilities that matter to you instead of disabling every category. A calendar application that creates events may need calendar access; it should not automatically receive access to contacts or other unrelated data.
Understand the desktop-app exception
Microsoft says these privacy pages mostly apply to Microsoft Store apps. Desktop applications may not appear in the list and may access some data differently. If a desktop app is absent, open that app’s own settings and look for privacy, account, data-source or connected-device controls. The Windows switch cannot govern an app that Windows does not expose in that list.

Windows 11: reduce interruptions without losing useful alerts
Configure an individual app
Open Start > Settings > System > Notifications. Select an app to adjust the ways its notifications are delivered. Windows provides controls for:
- Whether the app’s notifications are allowed.
- Banner pop-ups.
- Entries in Notification Center.
- Lock-screen notification content.
- Notification sounds.
- Priority relative to other notifications.
This lets you keep an alert available without making it disruptive. For example, remove banners and sound but retain Notification Center entries for an app whose updates you want to read later. If lock-screen exposure is the concern, hide its content there instead of disabling the app completely.
Schedule Do Not Disturb
Windows Do Not Disturb suppresses interruptions for a period while allowing selected exceptions. Microsoft describes the purpose this way: “To help you manage these notifications and minimize distractions, Windows offers a feature called Do Not Disturb.”

Windows can trigger it during scheduled hours, while you are duplicating a display, while gaming, during full-screen use or during the first hour after a feature update. You can allow selected apps, calls or reminders to break through when the mode is active.
Use per-app settings when one source is consistently noisy. Use Do Not Disturb when the same set of exceptions should apply to a time or activity, such as a presentation or a regular sleep schedule.

Solutions to common problems
“How do I stop apps from sending so many notifications?”
First identify whether the problem is one app or a time of day. On Windows, open its notification entry and remove banners or sounds, lower its priority or disable it while retaining other apps. For recurring quiet periods, schedule Do Not Disturb and add only the apps, calls or reminders that must interrupt you. On iPhone and Android, use Settings search to find the current notification controls for the app; do not change privacy permissions expecting alerts to stop.
“How do I keep notifications but stop pop-ups?”
Windows lets you keep Notification Center entries while removing banner presentation. You can also remove sound or lock-screen content independently. On iPhone or Android, look for the equivalent presentation choices in the current notification settings for your device and app; the exact paths are version- and manufacturer-dependent and are not specified by the official material used here.
“How can I let an app work without giving it every permission?”
Open the app’s permission list and evaluate each category against a specific feature. Keep the category needed for that feature, choose a narrower option when the device offers one, and deny unrelated categories. Test the feature immediately. If it fails, grant only the category named by the error or help text, then test again rather than restoring every permission at once.
“How do I turn off app tracking on iPhone?”
Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking and switch off tracking for individual apps. To stop all future tracking requests, turn off Allow Apps to Request to Track. This does not disable notifications or change other information permissions.
Troubleshooting after a change
- A feature stopped working: Identify the capability the feature actually needs, reopen that category and grant the narrowest available access. Avoid re-enabling unrelated categories.
- The app is missing from a privacy list: It may not have requested that capability, or on Windows it may be a desktop app outside the Store-app privacy list. Check the app’s own settings.
- Alerts continue after a privacy change: That is expected when notification controls were not changed. Open the operating system’s notification settings or the app’s notification preferences.
- A label does not match: Use Settings search and confirm the operating-system version. Device makers and updates can move or rename controls.
- Do Not Disturb hides something important: Review its allowed apps, calls and reminders, and verify that the current schedule or activity trigger is the one you intended.
- You are unsure what an app has done: On iPhone, consult App Privacy Report for permission use and network activity, while remembering that it is not a complete behavioral guarantee.
Keep the settings useful over time
Permissions accumulate as apps add features, and notification defaults can change after an update. Revisit the highest-impact categories and the noisiest apps periodically. When installing a new app, deny unrelated access initially and grant it only when a feature makes a clear case. For notifications, prefer the least disruptive presentation that still lets you respond: a notification-center entry instead of a banner, no sound when visual review is enough, and no lock-screen content when privacy is the priority.
Because menu names and capabilities change, treat the paths above as the current documented Windows, iPhone and Android locations rather than permanent guarantees. A quick Settings search is safer than following an old screenshot or enabling a broad permission simply because a screen moved.
