To locate Point Nemo, search a digital map for 48°52.6′S, 123°23.6′W or its signed decimal equivalent, -48.8767, -123.3933. The pin should fall in the South Pacific. Point Nemo is the commonly cited oceanic pole of inaccessibility—the ocean location farthest from land.
Use a general map to see the position and surrounding geography. Use a marine chart only when you need navigation information such as depths, landmarks, shoreline detail, or aids to navigation. A map display is not a substitute for a current chart, and no specific current chart edition for Point Nemo has been verified here.
Point Nemo coordinates at a glance
| Format | Value | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Degrees, minutes | 48°52.6′S, 123°23.6′W | Paste the pair into a map or plot it on a chart that accepts latitude and longitude. |
| Signed decimal degrees | -48.8767, -123.3933 | Enter latitude first, followed by longitude, separated by a comma. |
These are the coordinates published by NOAA’s National Ocean Service on a page updated January 4, 2021. The decimal form is an approximation of the degrees-and-minutes value, so a map may display a point a little away from the last decimal place without indicating an error.
What Point Nemo is and where it lies
Point Nemo is not an island, buoy, station, or permanent structure. It is a calculated location in open ocean. NOAA describes it as the place in the ocean farthest from land. A University of California, Santa Barbara geography reference uses the same commonly cited position.

NOAA estimates the nearest land at about 2,688 kilometres. The land areas named in NOAA’s description are:
- Ducie Island, to the north.
- Motu Nui, to the northeast.
- Maher Island, to the south.
Those names are useful for understanding the geometry, not for navigating to a nearby destination. None is close enough to function as a practical staging point for an ordinary trip, and the point itself has no visible physical marker for a map user to identify.
How far is Point Nemo from land?
The often-quoted 2,688-kilometre figure is the approximate distance from the calculated point to its nearest land areas, not a radius within which several islands are clustered. The three locations NOAA names help explain why the point sits where it does: Ducie Island lies generally north, Motu Nui is to the northeast, and Maher Island is to the south. On a globe, the distances and directions form the geometric context for the oceanic pole of inaccessibility.

A vessel’s route would depend on its starting position, weather, sea state, fuel, communications, and vessel capability. A straight-line measurement on a general map also may not match NOAA’s calculation because map providers can use different coastline datasets, projections, rounding, or treatments of islands and Antarctic ice. The number is best used as geographic scale: Point Nemo is exceptionally remote, rather than as a route-planning estimate.
How to find Point Nemo in Google Maps
Coordinate entry is the dependable approach because a place-name search may return unrelated results, explanatory pages, or user-created labels. Google’s current interface wording and pin behavior can change, so treat the following as a practical workflow rather than a promise about a particular button label.
- Open Google Maps in a browser or the mobile app. Wait for the map and its search field to load.
- Paste one complete coordinate pair. Use either the degrees-and-minutes pair or the signed decimal pair shown above. Keep latitude first and longitude second.
- Submit the search. Press Enter in a browser or use the app’s search action. A result marker, map focus, or coordinate result should move the view to the South Pacific.
- Check the signs and order if the view is wrong. A negative latitude places the point south of the Equator; a negative longitude places it west of the Greenwich meridian. Reversing the two numbers can send the map to an entirely different ocean or continent.
- Zoom out before interpreting the scene. At a close zoom the screen may show only ocean. A wider view makes the point’s isolation and the relative positions of the named islands easier to understand.
- Save or share the result only after checking the coordinates. A saved map label or shared link can preserve a view, but the coordinate pair is the unambiguous reference if the interface later changes.
Entering degrees, minutes, and seconds safely
The NOAA value uses degrees and decimal minutes, not degrees, minutes, and seconds. Keep the hemisphere letters: S means south and W means west. If a service rejects degree or prime symbols, use the signed decimal version instead. Do not add a plus sign to the south or west values; positive latitude and longitude would describe a different location.
Why a place-name search is less reliable
“Point Nemo” is a descriptive name for a calculated ocean point rather than a conventional civic address. Search databases can display explanatory results, labels, or nearby ocean references without centering the exact extremum. Coordinates avoid that ambiguity and can be reused in different mapping systems.

Converting the NOAA coordinates yourself
The conversion from degrees and decimal minutes to signed decimal degrees is simple. Divide the minute portion by 60, then add it to the degree value. For latitude, 52.6 divided by 60 is approximately 0.8767; 48 degrees plus that amount gives 48.8767. Because the hemisphere is south, write it as -48.8767. For longitude, 23.6 divided by 60 is approximately 0.3933; 123 degrees plus that amount gives 123.3933, written as -123.3933 because the hemisphere is west.

This calculation explains why the two formats identify the same place. It also shows why 52.6′ must not be mistaken for 52.6 decimal degrees. If a plotting service accepts only one notation, convert the minutes rather than dropping the symbols or changing the order. Keep enough digits to avoid unnecessary rounding, while remembering that the commonly cited decimal pair is still an approximation.
What you should see on the map
A general-purpose map normally shows a broad ocean view with no road network, building outline, harbor, or land-based street imagery at the target. That absence is expected. The map is useful for confirming the point’s oceanic position, measuring a rough visual relationship to land, and sharing the location with someone who does not use marine navigation software.
The nearest-land description is a geographic explanation, not a claim that a map’s ruler, satellite layer, or routing engine will reproduce NOAA’s distance exactly. Different datasets may measure coastlines differently, and map zoom levels can make the marker appear to move slightly when the projection or rounding changes.

| Aspect | General digital map | Marine chart |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Viewing geographic position and surrounding context | Supporting marine navigation |
| Typical information | Map location, labels, broad geographic features, and a movable view | Water depths, shoreline information, prominent topographic features, landmarks, and aids to navigation |
| Best use for Point Nemo | Quickly finding and sharing the coordinate | Assessing navigation information when a suitable, current chart is available |
| Coverage established by the available sources | Coordinate lookup is a practical method | No current chart edition for this South Pacific point has been established |
NOAA’s Office of Coast Survey says nautical charts are specifically tailored to marine navigation and show shoreline, water depths, prominent features and landmarks, and aids to navigation. NOAA also describes electronic navigational charts (ENCs) as vector products designed to support marine navigation. Those functions are different from simply putting a pin on a consumer map.
How to plot Point Nemo on a marine chart
Plotting the point is straightforward in principle, but selecting the right chart is the critical safety step. The sources used for this guide explain chart purpose and ENC characteristics; they do not identify a current chart number or edition that covers Point Nemo. Do not infer coverage from a chart catalogue focused on another region.
- Identify the hydrographic authority or chart service for the voyage area. Confirm that it publishes coverage for the relevant South Pacific waters.
- Check the chart edition and update status. A chart should be current for the intended navigation task. Record the edition or update information before relying on it.
- Confirm the chart’s coordinate reference and plotting format. Use the chart’s documented latitude-longitude convention and datum. If it accepts decimal degrees, use the signed pair; if it uses degrees and minutes, use the NOAA pair with the hemisphere letters.
- Use the chart’s coordinate or position tool. Digital chart systems differ in menu names and controls. Enter latitude first and longitude second, then verify the displayed position against the South Pacific overview.
- Inspect the surrounding chart data. Look for the depth information, chart notes, scale, surveyed limits, and any warnings that apply to the area. A marker alone does not make the chart suitable for navigation.
- Cross-check the plotted position. Compare the displayed coordinates with the values you entered and check for a transposition, missing minus sign, or incorrect hemisphere.
Why chart scale and notes matter
Charts are designed for decisions about navigation, not merely for naming a remote point. Scale, survey age, depth data, chart datum, notices, and coverage limits can affect how a navigator interprets the display. If a chart’s notes or catalogue do not clearly cover the location, stop and obtain authoritative coverage rather than extrapolating from a neighbouring sheet.
Electronic charts are not the same as a map screenshot
An ENC contains structured navigation data that a compatible navigation system can render at different scales. A screenshot or consumer map image does not provide the same data model, update process, or navigational warnings. Keep the two uses separate even when both show a marker at the same latitude and longitude.

Latitude must come first
Most coordinate search fields expect latitude followed by longitude. For Point Nemo, that means the southern value precedes the western value. Swapping them changes both the hemisphere and the numeric position.

Hemisphere letters and negative signs express the same direction
“S” and “W” identify south and west in the degrees-and-minutes notation. In signed decimal notation, those directions are represented by negative numbers. Do not combine a negative number with an opposite hemisphere letter.
Decimal minutes are not decimal degrees
The value 52.6′ is a fraction of a degree expressed in minutes. It should not be read as 52.6 degrees. If you manually convert minutes to degrees, divide the minute value by 60; the supplied signed decimal coordinates already perform that conversion approximately.
Rounding changes the marker slightly
The decimal pair is rounded to four decimal places. That precision is adequate for identifying the general point on a world map, but it is not evidence that every coastline model, chart datum, or calculation will produce an identical last digit.

Why different sources can show slightly different Point Nemo positions
The phrase “farthest from land” depends on how land boundaries are represented. A specialist secondary reference notes small uncertainties associated with coastline and boundary definitions, including questions around Antarctica’s ice shelf. A map database may use a different coastline model, resolution, or treatment of ice than the dataset behind another calculation.
For a reader trying to locate the point, NOAA’s published coordinates are the appropriate primary reference. Treat them as the commonly cited position rather than as a universal guarantee that every mathematical implementation will return exactly the same extremum.
Do you need special equipment or a paid product?
No physical product is established as necessary simply to look up Point Nemo. A browser-based map or mapping app can display the coordinate, and an atlas can be an optional educational aid. A positioning device, printed nautical chart, or plotting tool becomes relevant only for a separate navigation task; none is required for a basic coordinate lookup.
If you are planning an actual voyage, obtain navigation products through the appropriate hydrographic authority and follow the vessel’s normal chart, update, and position-fixing procedures. Do not treat a consumer map, an unverified chart download, or a shared pin as a substitute for those requirements. No specific commercial chart, atlas, device, or affiliate product is established for this location.
Troubleshooting a failed or misleading search
The map says it cannot find the place
Remove extra words and paste only the coordinate pair. Try the signed decimal format if special degree or prime characters were altered during copying. Ensure the comma separates latitude and longitude and that there is no line break between them.

The marker appears on land
Check the order, minus signs, and hemisphere letters first. A transposed pair or a missing negative sign is far more likely than Point Nemo being on land. Re-enter the values exactly as supplied and zoom out to confirm the ocean context.
The map shows only blank ocean
Blank ocean is the expected result at a remote open-ocean coordinate. Zoom out to see the wider South Pacific and use the coordinate readout, if available, to verify the marker rather than looking for a physical object.
A chart does not contain the point
Do not assume the chart is defective. Check its geographic limits, scale, edition, datum, and catalogue description. The absence may mean that the selected chart does not cover this part of the South Pacific. Obtain a chart from the appropriate hydrographic authority before using the information for navigation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe chart and map disagree by a small amount
Compare the actual coordinate readouts, not just the visual marker. Small differences can result from rounding, projection, chart datum, or coastline datasets. If the discrepancy is large, recheck the coordinate order and signs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What Point Nemo is not
- It is not an island or a named settlement.
- It is not a navigation aid or an official port.
- It is not a guarantee that a vessel can safely approach the plotted position.
- It is not proof that every online map or chart uses the same coastline definition.
These distinctions matter because a search result can make a remote coordinate look like an ordinary destination. The point is primarily a geographic calculation and reference location.
Using the point for education, planning, or a shared map
For classroom demonstrations or general curiosity, a digital map is usually sufficient: enter the coordinates, zoom out, and discuss why the marker is isolated. When sharing the location, include the coordinate pair in text so the recipient can verify the destination independently of a particular map provider’s label.
For voyage planning, treat the coordinate as one plotted position among many. A navigator still needs appropriate charts, updates, position-fixing methods, weather and sea-state information, communications planning, and vessel-specific procedures. Merely locating Point Nemo on a screen does not supply any of those operational details.

A quick verification checklist
- Confirm that the latitude reads approximately 48.8767° south and the longitude approximately 123.3933° west.
- Check that the marker is in the South Pacific and not on land.
- Zoom out far enough to understand the point’s relationship to Ducie Island, Motu Nui, and Maher Island.
- For chart work, verify the hydrographic authority, edition, update status, datum, scale, and geographic limits.
- Share the coordinates in text rather than relying only on a provider-specific label or link.
This checklist separates a successful coordinate lookup from a navigation-ready position. The first requires a correctly entered pair; the second requires authoritative, current chart information and normal marine operating procedures.

Source and date notes
NOAA’s National Ocean Service page, updated January 4, 2021, supplies the commonly cited coordinates, the approximate nearest-land distance, and the names of the nearby land areas. NOAA’s Office of Coast Survey explains what nautical charts display and how electronic navigational charts support marine navigation. A UCSB Geography reference corroborates the commonly cited coordinate. Secondary coordinate material can help visualize the location, but it does not replace the NOAA position or establish current Google Maps interface behavior.
Because map interfaces and chart catalogues change, verify the display, edition, and update status at the time you use them. The coordinate itself remains the clearest way to communicate which point you mean.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are Point Nemo’s coordinates?
NOAA’s commonly cited coordinates are 48°52.6′S, 123°23.6′W, approximately -48.8767, -123.3933 in signed decimal degrees.
How do I find Point Nemo on Google Maps?
Enter the complete coordinate pair in the map search field, with latitude first and longitude second. If the degrees-and-minutes notation is rejected, use -48.8767, -123.3933.
How far is Point Nemo from land?
NOAA estimates the nearest land at about 2,688 kilometres. It identifies Ducie Island, Motu Nui, and Maher Island among the nearest land areas.
Why does Google Maps show only ocean?
Point Nemo is an open-ocean calculation, not an island or settlement. A blank ocean view is expected; zoom out to see its South Pacific context.
Is Google Maps a nautical chart?
No. A general map helps display geographic position, while a marine chart provides navigation information such as depths, shoreline details, landmarks, and aids to navigation.
Can I use any marine chart for Point Nemo?
Do not assume so. Confirm that a current chart from the appropriate hydrographic authority covers this South Pacific location, and check its edition, updates, datum, scale, and notes.
Why might two maps place Point Nemo slightly differently?
Coastline definitions, island and ice treatment, projections, rounding, and chart datums can differ. NOAA’s coordinates are the commonly cited primary reference, not a guarantee of identical last digits in every dataset.
Do I need a special device or paid product to locate Point Nemo?
No physical product is necessary for a basic coordinate lookup. A browser map or app is sufficient; navigation equipment and authoritative charts are separate requirements for an actual voyage.
The Bottom Line
Enter 48°52.6′S, 123°23.6′W (about -48.8767, -123.3933) to locate Point Nemo. Use a general map for the geographic view, and verify a current, appropriate marine chart before treating the position as navigation information.
