The iPhone Photos app can search for a custom keyword, but the label must be added to the photo or video first. Open the item, tap the Info button (or swipe up), choose Add Keywords, enter a label, and tap Done. Later, open Search, type that label, and select the suggestion marked Aa. You can also search by dates, places, scenes, people, pets, captions, visible text, landmarks, and—on supported devices—natural-language descriptions.
What a keyword means in Photos
In Apple Photos, a custom keyword is a tag or label that you attach to an individual photo or video. Apple describes them this way: “Keywords are tags or labels you add to your photos and videos to help you easily find them.” A keyword is not automatically inferred from the file name, and Photos does not search for a label that you have never added.
For example, if you add client-site to several images, entering client-site in Photos Search can retrieve those items. The tag stays with the item in your Photos library, so it can be more dependable than remembering when or where you took the shot.

Custom keywords are different from Photos’ built-in recognition. A beach, a city, a person, a date, or text visible in an image may be searchable even when you never added a label. Treat those as separate search routes, described below.

How to add a keyword to a photo or video
- Open Photos and open the photo or video you want to label.
- Tap the Info button, or swipe up on the media to open its details.
- Tap Add Keywords.
- Enter a short, memorable label such as
tax-2026,hiking, orproject-orion. - Tap Done.
The same workflow applies to still photos and videos. If the item already has keywords, use Edit in the keyword field to add another label or change an existing one. Add labels while the reason for the tag is fresh; retroactively tagging a large library takes considerably longer.
Choose labels that will still make sense later
- Use one consistent spelling and capitalization for a project, trip, or event.
- Prefer distinctive terms.
birthday-2026is easier to narrow thanparty. - Use separate labels for different purposes, such as
to-printandportfolio. - Do not rely on punctuation or an obscure abbreviation that you may forget.
- For a recurring activity, include a year or location when that distinction matters.
There is no need to create a keyword for every image. Tag the groups you expect to retrieve by a human-made concept—such as “insurance,” “receipts,” or “best takes”—that Photos’ automatic recognition is unlikely to understand.
How to find items by the keyword
- In Photos, tap Search.
- Type the keyword exactly or begin typing it.
- When Photos shows the keyword suggestion marked Aa, tap that suggestion.
- Review the matching photos and videos, then open an item or select items for sharing, editing, or organizing.
The Aa marker identifies a text-based keyword suggestion. Selecting the suggestion is preferable to submitting an ambiguous partial word, because Photos may also offer places, people, dates, categories, or other interpretations of what you typed.
Apple documents entering multiple keywords separated by spaces. Use that when you want to combine labels in a single search, for example tax-2026 receipt. Photos’ suggestions and results can change as you type, so choose the matching Aa suggestions when they appear rather than assuming a plain text string is being treated as a custom tag.
Narrow the results to a media type
Add a media-type term such as Video or Portrait to the search. This is useful when a keyword applies to both still images and clips but you only need one format. The exact suggestions shown depend on the contents of your library.

Search within a specific part of your library
Photos can scope a search to the library, an album, or a collection. If a broad keyword returns more items than you want, first open the relevant album or collection and use its search controls, where available, rather than manually scrolling through the entire library.
What to do when a keyword search returns nothing
Most empty results have a simple cause: the label was never attached to the item, the spelling differs, or the search was interpreted as another kind of query. Check the following in order.
- Verify the tag exists. Open one suspected item, swipe up or tap Info, and look at its keyword field. If the label is absent, tap Add Keywords and save it.
- Check spelling and separators. Search for the exact label you entered. A hyphen, space, or plural ending can produce a different result.
- Use the Aa suggestion. Keep typing until Photos offers the keyword with the Aa marker, then select it.
- Test one label at a time. If a multi-keyword query is empty, remove the extra terms and confirm that each label works separately.
- Check the media location. Make sure the item is in the library, album, or collection you are searching. A keyword attached to a different item will not make the intended item appear.
- Confirm that you edited the correct copy. Duplicates, exported files, and re-imported versions can be separate library items with different metadata.
Interface names and placement can change between iOS releases. If you do not see Add Keywords, update the iPhone software when practical and look in the item’s Info/details view; the current Photos guide does not tie this workflow to one fixed iOS version.
Search by what you remember instead of a custom label
If you did not tag the item in advance, Photos offers several other ways to describe what you know. Use the route that matches your memory:

These routes do not retroactively create a custom keyword. They depend on Photos’ metadata, recognition, captions, or text analysis, so results can differ from a manually maintained tag list.

Use dates, places, events, people, and pets
Date searches
Enter a month or year when the approximate time is your strongest clue. A date query is useful for narrowing a large library before adding a media-type term such as Video.

Search a city, state, business, or venue recognized by Photos. Location results depend on the information available for the item; a photo without usable location context may not appear under a place name.
Events and categories
Photos can surface events and categories such as beaches or sunsets. These are scene or activity concepts, not custom labels, so they are useful when you remember the subject but never tagged it.
People and pets
Names assigned in the People & Pets collection provide another retrieval path. This works best after Photos has identified the person or pet and you have confirmed or named that grouping.
Captions
A caption is a description you add to an item. Search can use captions, making them useful for a sentence-length explanation while keywords remain better for compact, repeatable labels.

Find video moments with Apple Intelligence
On an iPhone with Apple Intelligence enabled, a supported device, and a supported language and region, Photos can accept natural-language descriptions for image searches. Apple also documents searching video clips for key moments. You might describe the scene you remember rather than relying on a pre-existing keyword.
This is an optional route, not a prerequisite for ordinary keyword tagging. Availability varies by hardware, language, and region, and the controls shown on your iPhone may differ from those in Apple’s documentation. If the feature is unavailable, add a custom keyword or use date, place, category, caption, or media-type search instead.
When natural language is the better choice
- You remember a visual situation but never labeled it.
- You need a moment inside a longer video rather than every video from a date.
- Your description combines several visual details that would be cumbersome to tag manually.
For repeatable projects, manual keywords remain easier to audit: you decide exactly which items belong to a label and can apply the same spelling to future media.

Enhanced Visual Search can identify landmarks and points of interest in Photos or Spotlight, including cases where the photo or video has no saved geolocation information. Apple says, “Enhanced Visual Search works without sending your photos or videos to Apple.” Apple documents the feature as starting with iOS 18, while availability and behavior can change with later releases.
Use this feature when the landmark itself is your clue and ordinary place metadata is missing. It is not a replacement for a custom keyword: a landmark result describes what Photos recognizes, whereas a keyword records your own filing decision.

Use Live Text when the words are visible
Live Text is related to search but solves a different problem. Apple documents recognizing text in a photo or a paused video so you can select, copy, translate, or search that text. It is useful for a sign, receipt, email address, phone number, or document captured by the camera.
Choose Live Text when you want to act on words inside one image. Choose Photos library search when you want to retrieve all media containing a known label, caption, recognized text value, or other searchable attribute. A visible word does not automatically become one of your custom keywords.
Shared Photo Library considerations
For an iCloud Shared Photo Library, Apple also documents searching by the person who added an item. That can answer “Who contributed this?” even when you do not know the date, place, or subject. It is a separate filter from a keyword you add yourself, and it applies only where the shared-library context and contributor information are available.

- Decide the retrieval question. If you will later ask “Which images belong to this project?” create a project keyword. If you will ask “What was visible?” rely on categories, captions, or natural-language search.
- Keep a small vocabulary. Establish one spelling for each recurring client, trip, event, or workflow.
- Tag at import or review time. Open the item, use Info or swipe up, add the keyword, and tap Done before the context is forgotten.
- Add a second label only when it serves a different query. For example,
conference-2026andto-shareanswer different questions. - Test the system. Search each new label and select its Aa suggestion. If the expected item is missing, correct the tag while the set is still small.
Avoid encoding every fact into one long label. Several short, consistent keywords are easier to remember and combine than a single tag that tries to describe date, place, subject, and status at once.
Important limits and availability notes
- The custom-keyword workflow requires you to add the keyword; Photos cannot retrieve a label that is not attached to an item.
- Apple’s current support documentation describes the workflow without fixing it to one iOS version, so button placement and wording may change.
- Apple Intelligence image and video searches require compatible hardware and supported language and region settings.
- Enhanced Visual Search availability and behavior may vary by release; Apple documents it as an iOS 18 feature.
- Automatic categories, people, pets, places, and text depend on what Photos can recognize in your library.
- A search result is not proof that every matching item was recognized. For important records, use explicit keywords and verify the returned set.
For dependable personal filing, combine methods: apply a custom keyword to the items you must retrieve, then use dates, places, categories, captions, Live Text, or Apple Intelligence as additional ways to locate items that were not tagged.
