Start with evidence, not repeated restarts. First determine whether the mysqld process is exiting or a client is merely losing its connection. Run mysqladmin version to check server uptime, then inspect the MySQL error log at the exact restart time. The final log messages, any stack trace, and the last query before the exit usually narrow the cause to corruption, a query-triggered defect, memory or disk trouble, or an operating-system failure.

Allow ordinary InnoDB crash recovery to finish after an unexpected exit. Do not delete redo logs to speed it up. If corruption prevents startup, protect the original files, use a known-good backup for restoration and point-in-time recovery, and reserve innodb_force_recovery for controlled data extraction.

First identify what “crashing” means

A web application reporting “server has gone away” does not prove that MySQL crashed. A client timeout, a network interruption, a refused connection, a service restart, and a mysqld process exit require different investigations. Establish which event occurred before changing configuration or repairing tables.

Observed symptom Evidence to collect First response Risk level
One client loses its connection Client error, network and application timestamps; server uptime unchanged Check connectivity, connection limits and the client-side timeout path before calling it a crash May be isolated to one client or network path
All clients disconnect and the process restarts mysqladmin version shows a reset uptime; error-log messages around the exit Save the log and restart timeline, then inspect the last messages and stack trace Potential data-integrity or host problem
MySQL will not start after an exit Startup error log, InnoDB and storage messages, operating-system errors Do not repeatedly delete files; preserve the data directory and determine whether recovery or restoration is required High: forced repairs can make recovery harder
A repeatable statement precedes every exit General query log showing the final statement and its parameters or shape Reproduce only in a controlled window, isolate the statement and preserve the evidence Could be an application, optimizer or server defect

1. Prove whether the server process restarted

From a host that can reach the server, run:

mysqladmin version

The output includes the server uptime. Compare it with the time at which users reported the failure and repeat the command after another incident. A newly reset uptime supports a server restart; an unchanged uptime points you toward a client, network, resource-limit or query-level problem instead. Record the command output with UTC timestamps so it can be aligned with application and operating-system logs.

Also record whether the process was started manually, by a service manager, by a container supervisor or through mysqld_safe. A supervisor can restart a process so quickly that users see only a brief outage. The supervisor’s event log is useful corroboration, but the MySQL server error log remains the primary source for the reason the process exited.

2. Read the MySQL error log before changing anything

Locate the error log configured for this installation; its filename and location vary by operating system, package and configuration. Read a window that begins before the first failed connection and ends after the restart attempt. Save an untouched copy before rotating, truncating or editing logs.

Look specifically for:

  • The timestamp of the last normal activity and the first startup message.
  • A stack trace, assertion failure, signal or other fatal-error report.
  • InnoDB messages about corrupt pages, tablespaces, redo logs, missing files or recovery progress.
  • Operating-system messages about out-of-memory conditions, terminated processes, filesystem errors or unavailable devices.
  • Warnings about tables that could not be opened, permissions, paths or missing files.
  • Deadlock details if lock contention is part of the incident.

Oracle MySQL’s troubleshooting guidance says that when mysqld has died and restarted, the reason may be found in the server error log. Treat the final messages before the exit as clues, not automatically as the root cause: a damaged page can be a consequence of failing storage, and a restart message can be emitted by a supervisor after the original fatal event.

3. Run the server in the foreground for a controlled reproduction

When a maintenance window permits, run the server from a command prompt rather than through mysqld_safe or a Windows service. Foreground output can expose a stack trace or fatal message that a service wrapper hides. On Windows, add --console so diagnostic output is directed to the console:

mysqld --console

Use the executable and configuration appropriate to the installation; do not start a second instance against the same data directory. Stop the normal service first, confirm that no old mysqld process still owns the data files, and ensure that the console session and error-log capture are being saved. If the failure is not reproducible, return to the normal supervised startup after collecting the evidence.

Foreground execution is a diagnostic technique, not a production deployment model. Keep the test isolated, because an intentionally exposed console or an unsupervised process can change restart behavior and access controls.

4. Test whether a particular query triggers the exit

Oracle’s troubleshooting manual states that “About 95% of all bugs are related to a particular query.” That figure is a statement in the troubleshooting guide, not a current independent measurement of all production crashes. Its practical advice is still useful: look for a statement that reliably appears immediately before each exit.

Enable the general query log only for a controlled window

  1. Choose a maintenance or test window and estimate the additional I/O and storage the log will generate.
  2. Enable the general query log using the method supported by your MySQL version and configuration. Confirm where the log is being written.
  3. Reproduce the failure with the smallest safe workload. Avoid sending customer secrets or unnecessary traffic into a broadly accessible log.
  4. Stop or disable the general query log as soon as the reproduction is complete.
  5. Match the final query timestamp to the error-log exit and startup timestamps. Repeat the test to distinguish a coincidence from a reliable trigger.

If the same statement precedes every exit after tables have been checked, preserve the query, schema definition, server version, relevant configuration and both logs. Reduce the case to the smallest reproducible statement and dataset you can safely share when preparing a MySQL bug report. A query trigger can represent an application mistake, an optimizer path, a storage-engine defect or a broader server bug; the log identifies the trigger but does not by itself prove which category is responsible.

5. Check storage-engine health without making corruption worse

InnoDB tables

InnoDB normally performs crash recovery after an unexpected exit. It reads redo information, rolls back uncommitted transactions and, in most situations, completes recovery without DBA action. Let that process finish and examine its progress in the error log. Do not interrupt startup merely because recovery is taking time.

When a specific table is suspected, you can use CHECK TABLE where supported by the engine and server version:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
CHECK TABLE database_name.table_name;

This check is evidence, not a guarantee. MySQL’s manual cautions that CHECK TABLE cannot detect every form of corruption. A clean result therefore does not override an InnoDB startup error, a storage failure or a repeatable crash.

MyISAM tables

For MyISAM, stop mysqld before operating directly on table files. Then run myisamchk against the affected table files using the options appropriate to the installed version and data directory:

myisamchk path/to/table.MYI

Never run a file-level repair against a table that the server is actively writing. Make a copy or backup of the original files first, record the exact command and output, and confirm that the table really is MyISAM. A procedure for MyISAM files is not an InnoDB repair procedure.

6. Choose the least-destructive recovery path

Routine unexpected exit: restart and wait for InnoDB recovery

After a normal unexpected exit, restart MySQL and allow InnoDB to process its redo logs and roll back incomplete work. In most situations, no manual DBA action is required. Watch the error log until recovery completes and verify that the server reaches its normal ready state before reopening application traffic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Never delete redo logs as a shortcut

Removing redo logs can discard information needed for recovery. MySQL says deletion should be considered only after a clean shutdown with innodb_fast_shutdown set to 0 or 1. An unclean server exit does not meet that condition. If startup is failing, preserve the logs and investigate the recorded error instead of deleting them.

Confirmed corruption or severe system failure: restore a known-good backup

If a hardware failure or severe system error has corrupted InnoDB data and the server refuses to start, restoration is safer than improvising repairs. Preserve the failed instance for analysis, restore the base backup to a separate or controlled target, and apply subsequent binary-log changes with mysqlbinlog for point-in-time recovery. Validate the restored instance before directing production traffic to it.

When damage is limited to one or a few tables, dumping the readable data, dropping the corrupt tables and recreating them can be sufficient. Make that decision only after confirming the scope and retaining a backup of the original files. A partial table rebuild does not substitute for a full backup when other pages or tables may also be damaged.

Startup still fails: use innodb_force_recovery only to extract data

innodb_force_recovery can permit a controlled startup when ordinary recovery cannot complete, allowing you to dump data that remains readable. It is an emergency extraction setting, not a repair that makes corrupted data healthy. Follow the guidance for the exact MySQL version, increase the setting only as directed, minimize writes, and use the resulting instance to export data to a clean server. Do not treat a server that starts under forced recovery as repaired.

7. Follow the evidence to the likely root cause

Log or test signature Likely direction Safe next action
Corrupt pages, tablespaces, redo logs or missing table files File-integrity, storage or data corruption Preserve original files, run only engine-appropriate checks, and favor backup restoration when corruption is confirmed
The same final query appears before every exit Query-triggered application, optimizer or server defect Reproduce in isolation, reduce the case and retain the general and error logs
Out-of-memory termination, filesystem errors or device failures Memory, disk or operating-system resource failure Correlate host logs and hardware diagnostics with the MySQL timeline before trusting the data files
Apparent page corruption disappears after a host restart Possible operating-system file-cache corruption Record the condition and investigate the host; a restart may remove an apparent cache fault, but it does not prove the storage is healthy
Deadlock details associated with the incident Locking pressure or a deadlock-related failure path Set innodb_print_all_deadlocks so deadlock details are written to the error log, then analyze the transactions involved

MySQL specifically advises considering defective hardware, with particular attention to memory and disk subsystems, because hardware faults can cause data corruption. Do not limit the investigation to SQL when the log shows host-level errors.

8. A repeatable incident runbook

  1. Timestamp the incident. Record the first client error, the last successful operation and every restart attempt in one time zone.
  2. Check uptime. Run mysqladmin version and save the output to distinguish a process restart from a client-only failure.
  3. Freeze evidence. Copy the error log, supervisor or operating-system messages, configuration used to start MySQL and any existing core or stack-trace files.
  4. Protect the data directory. Do not delete redo logs or run file-level utilities while the server is active. If corruption is suspected, preserve the original files before testing.
  5. Attempt the normal path once. Restart under the usual supervision and allow InnoDB crash recovery to complete. Record whether recovery finishes and what it reports.
  6. Branch on the result. A clean restart leads to query, hardware and preventive investigation; a failed restart leads to backup restoration or carefully controlled extraction.
  7. Reproduce only with controls. Use foreground execution or the general query log during a planned window, and disable extra logging after the test.
  8. Validate recovery. Check that expected databases and tables open, that application connections succeed and that backups or binary logs are available before declaring the incident closed.

9. Compare response options by risk and reversibility

Response When it fits Reversibility and data risk
Normal restart with automatic recovery Unexpected exit with no confirmed corruption Most reversible; let recovery complete and keep the original logs
Error-log and foreground diagnosis Cause is unclear or the process exits again Low data risk when performed in a controlled window; produces evidence rather than changing data
CHECK TABLE or offline myisamchk A specific table or engine is implicated Checks are narrower than restoration; myisamchk requires the server to be stopped and a backup of the files
Backup restore plus mysqlbinlog point-in-time recovery Confirmed corruption, hardware failure or severe system error High operational effort but the safest data-integrity path when the backup is known good
innodb_force_recovery Normal startup cannot complete and readable data must be extracted Least reversible diagnostic option; emergency extraction only, not a production repair

10. What to preserve for escalation

A useful escalation bundle contains the exact MySQL version and platform, mysqladmin version output, the complete error-log window, restart and supervisor timestamps, the final query if one was captured, table definitions, the storage engine involved, backup and binary-log availability, and host evidence for memory, disk or filesystem faults. Keep credentials and customer data out of shared logs; redact them without changing timestamps, error text or query structure.

If the failure is query-reproducible, provide a minimal schema and statement rather than an entire production dump. If corruption is suspected, state which files were preserved and which checks were run. This distinction prevents a repair attempt from destroying the evidence needed to identify a hardware or server defect.

11. Reduce the chance of a repeat incident

  • Monitor MySQL uptime and alert on unexpected resets instead of relying only on application connection errors.
  • Retain and rotate error logs so the messages surrounding a restart remain available.
  • Test that backups can actually be restored, and retain the binary logs needed for the desired point-in-time window.
  • Track disk health, filesystem errors and memory faults alongside database metrics.
  • Enable innodb_print_all_deadlocks when deadlock analysis is needed, then review the resulting error-log entries.
  • Use the general query log temporarily for diagnosis rather than leaving its overhead and sensitive data exposure in place indefinitely.
  • Document the normal startup command, data directory, log locations and recovery contacts before the next outage.

The practical answer

The fastest reliable route is a timeline: prove a restart with mysqladmin version, read the error log, capture a foreground stack trace when practical, and identify a repeatable final query with the general query log. Then separate routine InnoDB recovery from confirmed corruption. Let normal recovery finish, never remove redo logs after an unclean exit, and move to a known-good backup with binary-log replay when hardware or file damage is established. Treat forced recovery as a way to extract data, not as permission to keep serving from a damaged instance.
