To find out who paid for an online political ad, first open the ad’s own disclosure—such as Paid for by, an information icon, or Why this ad?—and copy the sponsor name exactly. Search that name in the platform’s advertising archive, then check the appropriate election-finance authority. Keep a dated screenshot or note of each step. An archive entry can document an ad on that platform, but a missing result does not prove the ad never ran, and a payer label does not necessarily reveal every upstream donor.
Start with the ad before it disappears
Online ads can stop running, change creative, or become harder to retrieve. Investigate while the ad is visible.
- Open the disclosure control. Look for a visible Paid for by line, an information icon, a three-dot menu, or Why this ad?. On YouTube, Google places the route under Why this ad?; Search disclosures appear with the ad, while Google-served display ads use an AdChoices or Why this ad? route.
- Copy the name exactly. Preserve punctuation, abbreviations, legal suffixes, and capitalization. Also record the platform, the account or Page name, the date you saw the ad, and any transparency link.
- Record what the label actually calls the entity. It may say payer, advertiser, sponsor, committee, or another responsible organization. Do not silently replace that name with the account name.
- Search the platform archive. Use the exact disclosed name first, then apply the archive’s date, location, or ad-status filters.
- Check official filings. Search the same name in the election-finance system for the relevant country, election, state, or locality. A federal resource will not automatically contain state or municipal filings.
Save a screenshot of the disclosure and a note showing your archive query, the result, and the date checked. Platform records age out or change, so contemporaneous documentation is more useful than a later recollection.

The disclosure is the best immediate lead to the entity that declared responsibility for the ad. It is not automatically a complete ownership or funding map.

- Payer or sponsor: the name shown in the ad’s transparency notice.
- Advertiser: the entity verified or registered with the platform, which can be different from the payer shown to viewers.
- Account or Page owner: the profile that publishes or is associated with the ad. Its public name may differ from the sponsor.
- Ad creator or intermediary: an agency, consultant, or other organization that prepared or placed the ad.
- Upstream funder: a donor or source that gave money to the disclosed organization. A platform label generally does not claim to enumerate every such donor.
Meta’s original archive explanation specifically noted that the payer can differ from the Page name. Treat a matching name as a clue, not proof that two similarly named entities are the same legal person. Confirm identity in the filing or transparency record itself.
Finding political ads on Facebook and Instagram
Search Meta’s Ad Library
Meta’s Ad Library is searchable for political and social-issue ads run on Facebook and Instagram. Enter the exact payer or advertiser name from the disclosure, then narrow the search with the available country, issue, date, or ad-status controls. Open each plausible result and compare the creative, disclaimer, Page or profile, and run dates with the ad you captured.
Meta’s current election guidance says these ads carry Paid for by disclaimers. For U.S. advertisers, Meta requires additional information such as an FEC identification number or Tax Identification number. Those identifiers can help distinguish organizations with similar names, but they do not by themselves prove who supplied all of the organization’s money.

Meta has said political and social-issue ads remain in the Ad Library for seven years. In its May 21, 2025 update, Meta said the first items reaching the end of that period began leaving the Ad Library, its API, and the Ad Library Report on May 24, 2025. Removal happens on a rolling basis. Therefore, an old ad that no longer appears may simply have reached the retention limit.
Use Page-transparency details carefully
Meta can show confirmed Page-owner and Page-location information as separate transparency details. That context can help you assess whether a Page is connected to an organization, but it is not proof that the Page owner funded a particular ad. The ad-level disclaimer and the archive record are the relevant evidence for the specific placement.

Finding who paid for a Google Search or YouTube ad
YouTube
On YouTube, open Why this ad? to view the available payer or advertiser disclosure. Copy the name and any linked transparency information before navigating away. Then search Google’s public political-ad report or Ads Transparency Center with that exact name.
Google Search and display placements
For Search, the disclosure appears directly with the ad. For Google-served display placements, use the AdChoices or Why this ad? route. The visible advertiser name may be a brand or account label, so compare it with the formal payer information in the notice rather than assuming the two are identical.
Know the report’s boundaries
Google’s political-ad report covers ads within its Election Ads policy that are run by verified election advertisers. It is not a comprehensive index of every political statement, every paid persuasion campaign, or every unverified advertiser. A search with no result can mean the ad is outside the policy scope, the advertiser is not verified for the relevant region, the name was entered differently, or the record is no longer available.
Google says its election-advertiser verification application can involve two steps, with each step taking up to five business days. That is an advertiser-processing estimate, not a promise about how quickly a viewer’s lookup will appear. Verification requirements vary by the region targeted, so the same organization may have different disclosure obligations in different places.
EU political-ad transparency
Rules that apply from October 10, 2025
Regulation (EU) 2024/900 entered into full application on October 10, 2025. The European Commission says paid and/or targeted political advertisements in the EU must be labeled and provide key information such as the sponsor, the related election or referendum, the amount paid, and targeting information. The regulation concerns transparency and targeting; it does not regulate the substantive content of political ads.

The European Repository pilot
On October 12, 2026, the Commission described a public European Repository for online political advertisements and announced a pilot available for voluntary use. The repository is intended to make ads and transparency notices accessible. Notices may identify the sponsor, controlling entity, paying entity, amount spent, funding origin, dissemination period, and targeting or ad-delivery information.

Check the ad’s own notice first, then search the repository and retain the date of your search. A missing pilot entry is not proof that no EU political ad ran.
Move from a payer name to official election records
Choose the right jurisdiction
Identify where the election or referendum is taking place and whether the contest is federal, state, regional, municipal, or EU-level. Use the election authority for that jurisdiction. A U.S. federal filing system may not include a state legislative race, city ballot measure, or local committee.
Use U.S. federal resources for federal matters
For U.S. federal legal context, the Federal Election Commission provides searchable statutes, regulations, Commission actions, and cases. Its legal-resource index is a starting point for federal materials, not a guarantee that every local filing is stored there and not a substitute for legal advice.
Match identities before drawing conclusions
Search the exact disclosed name, then compare registration numbers, addresses, committee types, filing dates, and the election or measure named in the filing. Similar names can belong to separate organizations. A filing that lists a payment to an advertising vendor may confirm spending without identifying every donor behind the committee.

How to compare an ad archive with a campaign-finance filing

Do not merge records merely because two names look alike. Require a matching identifier or a filing that explicitly connects the entities.
What a search result can establish
When the ad appears in an archive
A matching archive entry can support that an ad was stored by that platform under its definitions, show the disclosed advertiser or payer, and provide dates or creative details the platform makes public. It can help you distinguish a Page or channel from the organization named in the disclaimer.
When the ad does not appear
No result is inconclusive. Check spelling, legal suffixes, country and date filters, and whether you searched the payer rather than the Page name. The ad may fall outside the platform’s political-ad definition, may have been run by an unverified advertiser, may have aged out, or may have appeared on another platform.
What remains unresolved
Even a successful match usually does not identify every upstream donor, the agency that produced the creative, or spending on other platforms. Use the payer as the starting point for records research, not as a claim about the entire money trail.
Preserve evidence that another person can check
- Capture the ad creative and the complete disclosure, including any expanded notice.
- Write down the exact sponsor name, account or Page name, platform, and date and time observed.
- Record the archive URL or search path as displayed by the platform, plus the exact query and filters used.
- Save the archive result, run dates, identifiers, and any explanation of eligibility or verification.
- Note the election, referendum, country, state, or locality you used to select official records.
- Keep a dated copy of each filing or official record and distinguish an ad-level disclosure from a financial transaction.
Store the files in a way that preserves their capture date. If you publish an allegation, quote the disclosure accurately and separate what the record shows from what it does not establish.

Troubleshoot common dead ends
The ad vanished before you opened its notice
Search the account or Page’s public posts, then try the platform archive with the visible account name and likely sponsor variations. If you cannot verify the payer, label the result as unconfirmed rather than guessing from the creative or logo.
The Page name and payer name differ
Use the payer from the disclosure as the primary query. Then inspect the archive’s advertiser fields and official filings for identifiers that connect—or separate—the payer and the Page.
Google shows no listing
Confirm that you used the Google disclosure route, selected the correct region, and searched the verified advertiser name. The political-ad report’s limited policy and verification scope means a blank result cannot establish that no ad ran.
An old Meta ad is missing
Check the date. Meta’s seven-year retention promise is rolling, and the first qualifying ads began leaving on May 24, 2025. A missing older entry should not be treated as evidence that the ad never existed.
The filing names a different organization
Look for committee numbers, addresses, registration data, and payment descriptions. The difference may reflect an intermediary, a parent organization, a vendor, or an unrelated entity with a similar name. Do not assert a match without documentary support.
Use the result responsibly
Political-ad disclosures can involve personal addresses, tax identifiers, or other sensitive information. Collect only what is needed to verify the sponsor, avoid republishing unnecessary personal data, and use official records rather than crowdsourced accusations when identifying an organization.
Rules change by platform and jurisdiction. Before relying on a result for a complaint, report, or legal decision, read the current platform notice and the current election authority guidance for the relevant contest. The Federal Election Commission’s materials explain federal law and resources; they do not replace the law or answer every state and local question.

The reliable sequence is disclosure, platform archive, jurisdiction-specific filing, and dated evidence. Keeping those layers separate lets you answer “Who paid for this political ad?” without overstating what an online label or a missing archive entry proves.
