Check two dated records: Nasdaq’s addition notice, which identifies the company and the index-change effective date, and the specific ETF issuer’s holdings file, which shows what the fund held on a particular date. Search that file by the company’s name and ticker, then report the ETF ticker, holdings-file date, and whether a matching security appeared. Do not use the ETF’s benchmark label alone: holdings change, and an announcement may precede the date when the change takes effect.

The process is straightforward, but date discipline matters. A company can be announced as an incoming constituent days before it enters the index, while an ETF’s portfolio page may update daily or display only a recent snapshot. A reliable answer therefore says exactly which fund, security and disclosure date were checked.

What you are actually verifying

The Nasdaq-100 is an index, not a security that you can buy directly. It tracks 100 large non-financial companies listed on Nasdaq. An ETF can seek to provide exposure to that index, but the only reliable answer to “Does my ETF own this newly added company?” comes from the ETF issuer’s own dated portfolio data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There are two separate facts to establish:

  • Index event: Nasdaq identified the company as an addition and specified when the change became effective.
  • Fund position: The ETF’s holdings file, dated on or after that effective date, listed a matching security.

Those records answer what the published portfolio showed on a stated date. They do not prove that the ETF bought the shares because of the index change, predict a future holding, or establish that every fund using a Nasdaq-100 benchmark has identical positions.

This distinction prevents a common shortcut: seeing a company in a Nasdaq-100 article and assuming it must appear in every related ETF. The index provider describes the benchmark’s constituents; the fund sponsor reports the assets in a particular portfolio. Those are different records maintained for different purposes.

Why the announcement date and effective date differ

Nasdaq’s notice can be published before the index change takes effect. For example, Nasdaq’s 2025 notice said six companies would enter the index before the market opened on December 22, 2025. A holdings file dated before that effective date may legitimately omit the companies even though the addition has already been announced.

Always record both dates from the notice:

  • Announcement date: when Nasdaq disclosed the upcoming change.
  • Effective date: when the new composition applied, including the stated market-open timing.

The effective date is the useful cutoff for testing whether a post-change portfolio could show the new security. If the notice says the change applies before the market opens, a file dated that day or later is generally the relevant starting point, subject to the issuer’s own “as of” convention. A file created after the effective date can still represent holdings from an earlier valuation date, so read the date printed in the file rather than relying on the download time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a current-ownership question, use the latest holdings file available and confirm that it is dated on or after the effective date. For a historical question, use a holdings file from the date being investigated or the closest dated file that the issuer provides.

The Nasdaq-100 schedule and what “added” can mean

“Added” is not limited to the annual December event. Nasdaq’s methodology also provides quarterly rebalances and conditional fast-entry and special-event processes. Check the specific notice rather than assuming that every addition occurred during the annual reconstitution.

Annual reconstitution

Under Nasdaq’s current methodology, the reference date is the last trading day of November. The announcement is scheduled after the close on the sixth trading day before the effective date. The effective date is market open on the first trading day after the third Friday in December.

Quarterly rebalances

Quarterly reference dates are the last trading day of February, May, August, and November. The corresponding rebalance takes effect after the third Friday in March, June, September, and December. Nasdaq can update its methodology and calendar, so use the latest notice and methodology when you perform the check.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fast entries and special events

A company may enter through a conditional fast-entry process or a special-event process rather than waiting for the annual or quarterly schedule. In those cases, the notice’s own effective date controls. Do not calculate a date from the ordinary calendar when Nasdaq has issued a specific event notice.

Selection rules in brief

Nasdaq first selects the top 75 eligible companies by full market capitalization, retains qualifying current members ranked in the top 100, and applies additional rules to certain existing members ranked 101–125 and to remaining non-members ranked in the top 100. The process concludes when the index reaches 100 constituents. These rules explain why a company’s market-cap rank alone does not tell you whether it will be added.

Eligibility also involves more than a company’s name. Nasdaq’s methodology allows multiple classes of securities issued by the same company to be eligible, subject to the other criteria. That is why the exact ticker and class in the notice matter when you inspect an ETF file.

Information to gather before you start

  • Company identity: the legal or published company name and ticker in Nasdaq’s notice.
  • ETF identity: the exact fund ticker, not just a description such as “Nasdaq ETF.”
  • Question date: whether you want the latest disclosed position or ownership on a past date.
  • Relevant share class: if the company has more than one listed class, note the class shown in the notice and holdings file.
  • Event type: annual reconstitution, quarterly rebalance, fast entry or special event, if stated in the notice.

Having all five prevents a common error: searching the wrong fund, the wrong date, or a similar company name. It also gives you the minimum information needed to explain a result to another reader.

Step-by-step: verify a current holding

1. Find Nasdaq’s official addition notice

Use Nasdaq’s current constituent information or the official notice for the event. Confirm the company’s name, ticker, announcement date, and effective date. Copy the ticker exactly; punctuation, spacing, and share-class labels can matter when you search a portfolio file.

If the notice describes an annual reconstitution, record the stated market-open effective date. If it describes a quarterly, fast-entry, or special-event change, record the effective date in that notice instead of applying the annual schedule.

Keep a copy of the notice or its URL with your notes. Notices can be replaced or supplemented, and retaining the original wording makes it clear which event you checked.

2. Identify the ETF from its ticker

Go to the fund sponsor’s official website and locate the page for the exact ETF. Look for labels such as Holdings, Portfolio, Daily holdings, or All holdings. Do not assume that two funds with similar names use the same portfolio construction or rebalance timing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Invesco’s QQQ page, for example, includes an “All QQQ holdings” area and states that ETF holdings are disclosed daily. The live holdings table was not available in the cited session, so no current QQQ ownership should be inferred without retrieving a dated file yourself.

Use the sponsor’s page rather than a search-engine result or an unaffiliated portfolio display. Third-party pages may lag, combine multiple share classes, or omit the “as of” date needed to answer a time-specific question.

3. Download the holdings file when possible

A downloadable CSV, spreadsheet, or PDF is preferable to a live table because it preserves the date of the disclosure. Save the file or record its publication date before searching it. If the issuer offers several files, choose the one labeled for holdings rather than a fact sheet that may show only selected positions.

Check whether the file has both a file date and an “as of” portfolio date. Use the portfolio date for the factual answer and retain the download date as an audit note. If the page updates while you are working, a saved copy prevents the result from changing silently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Search more than one identifier

Search the company’s ticker first, then its full name. If neither produces a clear match, try the legal name or the security description used by the issuer. Check the row’s ticker, security description, and share class together. A text match can be misleading when a company has changed its name, when an issuer uses an abbreviated description, or when multiple classes trade separately.

Search variations deliberately: remove punctuation, try the former corporate name if the notice mentions one, and inspect nearby rows when a spreadsheet filter returns no result. Do not count a match based only on a substring such as a common word in two unrelated company names.

Nasdaq’s current methodology says multiple classes of securities issued by the same company can each be eligible, subject to the other criteria. Therefore, a match must be to the relevant security, not merely to a parent-company name.

5. Compare the two dates

For a current answer, the holdings file should be dated on or after the index change’s effective date. If the file predates the effective date, it cannot confirm post-change ownership. Recheck the newest file because an ETF can add or remove a position after the initial rebalance.

For a file dated exactly on the effective day, read the issuer’s convention carefully. “As of” may refer to a prior market close, while the index change is effective at the next market open. When the timing is ambiguous, describe the ambiguity instead of presenting the date as proof of an intraday trade.

6. Record a bounded result

Write down the ETF ticker, the company ticker, the holdings-file date, and whether a matching security appeared. A precise statement looks like this:

“The ETF’s holdings file dated [date] lists [company/security description] under [ticker]. This confirms that the published portfolio showed the position on that date.”

If no match appears, state that the security was not found in that dated file. Do not turn that result into a claim about every earlier or later date. If the file is incomplete or omits small positions, say that the issuer’s displayed data did not show a match rather than asserting that no economic exposure existed.

How to answer a historical ownership question

Historical questions require a historical file. Start with the date the reader cares about, then work backward:

  1. Locate the Nasdaq notice and its effective date.
  2. Find an archived holdings file from the target date or the nearest issuer-provided date after the effective date.
  3. Determine whether the archive’s date is a portfolio date, publication date or both.
  4. Search the archive by ticker and company name, checking the security description and share class.
  5. Report the file date and the match exactly as disclosed.

If the issuer does not publish an archive, contact the fund sponsor or consult its official filings. Do not infer a past position from today’s portfolio, the ETF’s name, or a third-party portfolio snapshot. An official filing may cover a different reporting period, so identify that period explicitly rather than presenting it as a daily holdings record.

When no file exists for the exact date, use the nearest dated file only if it answers the reader’s question reasonably. Explain the gap—for example, that the next available file was several trading days later—and avoid implying that the position was unchanged throughout the interval.

Worked example: the December 22, 2025 additions

Nasdaq’s 2025 notice listed six additions effective before the market opened on December 22, 2025:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Company Ticker Effective date
Alnylam Pharmaceuticals ALNY December 22, 2025
Ferrovial FER December 22, 2025
Insmed INSM December 22, 2025
Monolithic Power Systems MPWR December 22, 2025
Seagate Technology STX December 22, 2025
Western Digital WDC December 22, 2025

This table is an example of the first half of the verification process. To determine whether a particular ETF owned one of these companies, open that ETF’s holdings file dated December 22, 2025 or later, search for the ticker and name, and record the exact security description. The notice itself does not establish ownership in any individual ETF.

For instance, a file dated December 19 is useful for documenting the pre-change portfolio, but it cannot answer whether the fund showed ALNY after the change. A later file can answer that narrower question, provided its “as of” date is clear.

Checking several ETFs side by side

If you are comparing funds, use the same company and the same cutoff date for each fund. A compact comparison should contain only information visible in each issuer’s file:

ETF Holdings-file date Company/security shown What the result establishes
Exact ETF ticker Date printed by issuer Name, ticker, and share class as listed Whether that published file showed the security on that date

Aligning dates is essential. If one ETF file is from December 22 and another from December 29, a difference may reflect timing rather than portfolio policy. Note the date beside every yes or no result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not rank or recommend funds from this check. The comparison answers exposure on the disclosed dates; it does not measure tracking quality, costs, tax treatment, or future holdings. A fund can show the security in one file and omit it in a later file without either observation proving that the fund is defective.

Common reasons a search gives the wrong answer

The file is too early

A file dated between the announcement and effective date may still show the old portfolio. Use the effective date as the minimum cutoff for a post-change answer.

You searched only the popular name

Fund issuers may use a legal name, an abbreviated security description, or a different punctuation style. Search ticker, full name, and issuer description, then inspect the row manually.

The company has multiple share classes

Two classes can appear as separate eligible securities. Match the class and ticker shown in the notice to the class in the ETF file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You checked a benchmark page instead of the fund

Nasdaq publishes index information; the ETF sponsor publishes the fund’s portfolio. The benchmark page cannot confirm what a particular ETF held.

You relied on a live page without capturing its date

Live tables change and may load asynchronously. Download the file or record the displayed “as of” date so another person can reproduce the result.

You treated one observation as permanent

ETF holdings change. A positive match proves a disclosed position on the file’s date, not a continuing position after that date.

You used the wrong security type

A company name can appear in a file as an equity position, a derivative-related description or another line item. Confirm the ticker and security description, and do not treat a generic issuer name as proof of a common-stock holding.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You confused an announcement with a trade confirmation

Nasdaq’s notice describes an index composition change. It does not reveal the ETF’s order timing, execution price or portfolio-management decision. Keep those conclusions separate from the holdings lookup.

What the result does—and does not—tell you

  • It does tell you: whether the ETF’s published portfolio contained a matching security on the dated file.
  • It does tell you: which ticker, name and share class the issuer reported, when those fields are present.
  • It does not tell you: the exact trade date, the fund’s purchase price, the reason for the trade, or whether the position remains today.
  • It does not prove: that every ETF tracking or referencing the Nasdaq-100 owns the same security in the same weight.
  • It does not predict: the next rebalance, a future deletion, or the ETF’s performance.
  • It does not establish: that the ETF bought the security solely because Nasdaq added it. A published position can result from portfolio activity that is not explained by the index notice.

A repeatable checklist

  1. Identify the company and ticker in Nasdaq’s official notice.
  2. Record the announcement date and effective date separately.
  3. Identify whether the event is annual, quarterly, fast-entry or special-event.
  4. Identify the exact ETF ticker.
  5. Open the fund sponsor’s official holdings or daily-holdings page.
  6. Download or preserve a file with a clear “as of” date.
  7. Search by ticker and company name.
  8. Verify the security description and share class.
  9. Ensure the file date is appropriate for a current or historical question.
  10. Compare dates consistently if checking multiple ETFs.
  11. Report the ETF ticker, company ticker, file date, and match status.
  12. Recheck the latest file whenever the reader needs a current answer.

Sources and date discipline

Nasdaq’s 2026 Nasdaq-100 Index Methodology is the authority for the 100-constituent selection process and the annual and quarterly schedule. Nasdaq’s 2025 official notice supplies the December 22, 2025 example and its six named additions. Nasdaq’s investor guidance explains that an index is not directly investable and that ETFs are one route to index exposure. The ETF issuer’s own holdings page or file remains the authority for that fund’s disclosed positions.

Because methodology, calendars and fund files can change, use the version that applies to the event and date under review. Cite the notice and the holdings-file date together whenever you publish a result.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I answer the question from Nasdaq’s constituent list alone?

No. Nasdaq’s list can confirm that a company joined the index and when the change became effective, but only the specific ETF issuer’s dated holdings file can show whether that fund reported the security.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the announcement date the date an ETF must own the stock?

No. Use the effective date in Nasdaq’s notice. An announcement can precede the market-open date when the new index composition applies, and a holdings file before that date may still show the old portfolio.

What if the ETF page shows holdings but no date?

Look for an “as of” label, downloadable file, daily-holdings link or archive. If no date can be established, contact the issuer or report that the page does not provide enough information for a time-specific conclusion.

Should I search by ticker or company name?

Use both. Start with the ticker, then search the full or legal name and inspect the issuer’s security description. This helps catch abbreviations, name changes and punctuation differences.

How do I handle multiple share classes?

Match the exact class and ticker in Nasdaq’s notice to the class and ticker in the ETF file. Nasdaq’s methodology allows multiple classes from one company to be eligible, so a parent-company name alone is not sufficient.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if I need to know whether the ETF held the company last year?

Find an archived holdings file from the date in question or the nearest dated file after the relevant effective date. If no archive exists, ask the sponsor or consult an official filing, and state the reporting period and any date gap.

Does a “yes” result mean the ETF bought the stock because of the Nasdaq-100 change?

No. It means the issuer’s published portfolio showed the matching security on that date. It does not reveal the trade date, price or reason for the position.

Can two Nasdaq-100 ETFs give different answers?

Yes. Compare each fund’s own file and align the dates. Similar benchmark descriptions do not by themselves establish identical holdings, share classes or portfolio timing.

The Bottom Line

Use Nasdaq to verify exactly what was added and when it became effective; use the ETF issuer’s dated holdings file to verify whether your fund showed that security. Search by ticker and name, check the share class, align the dates, and state the file date with every answer.
