Start with No More Ransom’s Crypto Sheriff. It is designed to identify the ransomware from submitted evidence and check whether a decryption solution is available. A match identifies a possible route to recovery; it does not guarantee that a decryptor will work on every victim’s files.
Prepare evidence before trying to identify the infection
Keep the ransom note and a few relevant encrypted files. Do not delete or alter them while investigating: they may help identify the ransomware and support an incident response. CISA’s #StopRansomware Guide advises preserving evidence, including ransom notes and samples, and consulting federal law enforcement about possible decryptors.
Check whether Crypto Sheriff identifies a matching solution
- Open Crypto Sheriff. Use the live tool at No More Ransom.
- Follow its current submission instructions. The project describes submitting evidence to identify the ransomware. Check the tool itself for accepted file types and upload directions; these can change.
- Review the identification and any solution it points to. Confirm that the listed ransomware family or variant, and any stated key or file conditions, fit your case. A familiar filename extension or a general ransomware-family name alone is not enough to establish that a particular decryptor applies to your files.
- Keep the evidence if the result is unknown. An unknown result means the service could not establish a match from what you submitted. It does not prove recovery is impossible, nor does it mean a decryptor will necessarily become available later.
No More Ransom says that keys may be incomplete and advises checking again. A listed tool may also fail if only some keys are available, so treat a result as a lead to verify rather than a promise of recovery.

- The ransomware authors made an implementation mistake that can be exploited.
- The authors released decryption keys or a master key.
- Law enforcement seized a server holding keys and shared them.
These explain how some decryptors emerge; they do not predict whether one will be found for a particular infection.
When to involve law enforcement
For an organizational incident, preserve the ransom note, encrypted-file samples, and other relevant incident evidence. CISA’s guide recommends consulting federal law enforcement about possible decryptors even if mitigation actions are possible. The FBI’s ransomware guidance directs victims to contact a local FBI field office or submit a report to IC3.

Do not treat payment as a recovery method
The FBI says it does not support paying a ransom, and payment does not guarantee that your data will be restored. No More Ransom likewise warns that paying may fail to recover files. A decryptor check and incident-response help are ways to investigate recovery options; neither makes payment reliable.

- Specificity: Is the infection identified closely enough to distinguish the relevant family or variant?
- Explicit match: Does the decryptor say it supports that family or variant, rather than only resembling it by extension or note?
- Conditions: Do the stated key, file, or other requirements fit the case?
- Provenance: Is the tool published or endorsed by an official project, law-enforcement agency, or trusted security vendor?
These are practical checks, not a formal rating system. Do not assume an unfamiliar tool is safe or suitable simply because it claims to decrypt files.
