Check the official support information and store listing for your exact game, platform and edition, then test the mode you plan to play with the device offline. A “single-player” label does not prove a game works without a connection: internet access may be needed only to download it, to authenticate at launch, or throughout play. Those requirements—and what happens after a shutdown—vary by title.
Check what the game needs an internet connection for
Separate the stages and features that can have different requirements. A game may need a connection for one purpose but not another:
- Download or installation: Getting the game onto a console or computer does not necessarily mean you need a connection to play it afterward. Square Enix says of FANTASIAN Neo Dimension that an internet connection is needed to download the game, but not to play it (Square Enix Support).
- First launch or setup: A game may need an initial connection for activation, installation steps or an update before offline play is available.
- Later authentication: Some games or launchers may check that you have a valid entitlement when you start the game, or at intervals.
- Gameplay: A connection may be required continuously, only for multiplayer or a particular mode, or not at all for the mode you want.
- Online features and data: Matchmaking, cloud saves, inventory, progression, purchased digital items and user-created content may rely on servers even when some gameplay works offline.
Look for game-specific answers on the publisher’s support site and the official store page for the platform and edition you own. Search those pages for “internet connection,” “offline,” “online activation,” “periodic verification,” “launcher” and “server shutdown.” A broad platform setting cannot override a connection requirement imposed by the game or a separate launcher.

Identify your exact copy before checking
Note the full game title, platform, edition and whether you own a disc or a digital copy. Requirements can differ between platforms or editions, and a launcher can add its own authentication step. If you are comparing multiple games or versions, record the details rather than treating a title name alone as enough to identify the relevant requirements.

Look for shutdown notices and what remains playable
Search the publisher’s or platform’s official service notices for the game name alongside “server shutdown,” “end of service” or “online services.” Read the notice for its effective date and the specific modes or features affected. A shutdown does not have the same result for every game: PlayStation’s notices say that offline modes remain for MLB The Show 19 and MLB The Show 20, and that offline portions of Gran Turismo Sport remain playable after online services ended. The notice for GUNS UP!, by contrast, says the game requires an online connection and will not be playable after its online service ends (PlayStation service updates).
Check the notice for your platform and, where relevant, your region. Shutdown dates and surviving features can change; an old forum post or a notice for another edition is not reliable evidence of the current status of your copy.

Test the game offline before you rely on it
An online session only shows that the game works while connected. Test the exact mode you intend to use with the game and platform configured for offline use. Update the game and platform client while online, finish any required setup, and then disconnect before launching and playing that mode.

Steam: prepare Offline Mode
- Connect to the Steam Network and update both the Steam client and the game.
- Launch the game once while online to complete setup and check for any remaining update or installation requirements.
- Use Steam’s Offline Mode instructions to switch to Go Offline, then close Steam normally so its stored offline information is retained.
- Disconnect from the internet, start Steam and test the specific game mode you need.
Valve notes that most games need an initial startup while connected to Steam. It also warns that a game requiring an active connection or an external launcher will not work offline. Steam Offline Mode is specific to Steam; it does not establish how a console version or another PC client behaves.

Xbox console: check the title’s own requirement
Microsoft’s Xbox console guidance says games may require a network connection for all modes or may include a mode that works offline; games are not required to support offline play. It also says titles marked as requiring the Xbox network will not launch when the console is offline. These statements apply to Xbox console, not Xbox games on PC (Microsoft Learn: best practices for handling offline play).
Check what a server shutdown could take with it
Offline access to a game’s base content does not guarantee that online-dependent data or features will remain available. A game might still run while losing server-side inventory, achievements, progression, purchased items, cloud saves or user-generated content. Zen Studios’ terms, for example, say its products’ base game can operate offline with reduced functionality after support ends, while some server-side content may become inaccessible (Zen Studios Terms and Conditions for Digital Product Purchase). That is a statement about Zen Studios’ products, not a promise about other publishers’ games.

For a particular game, look for a shutdown notice or terms that explain whether saves and purchased or created content are stored locally or on the publisher’s servers. If the notice does not say, do not assume that a working offline campaign means your online data is preserved.

If you cannot find a specific answer, ask the publisher and include the platform, edition and mode you want to play. Ask whether the connection is required for first launch, later authentication, continuous play or only online features, and what happens to the mode and server-side data after service ends. Keep the answer’s date, since requirements and service plans can change. Until you can verify it, treat offline play as uncertain.

How to compare games or editions
When assessing more than one copy, compare the dependency itself rather than sorting games into a simple “online” or “offline” category:
- Connection stage: download and installation, first launch, periodic verification or continuous play.
- Scope: all gameplay, a particular mode, multiplayer, a launcher or authentication step, cloud saves or optional services.
- Failure effect: launch blocked, a session interrupted, a feature unavailable, server-side content lost, or an offline mode still playable.
- Shutdown plan: whether there is an official end-of-service notice, its date and the features the publisher says will remain usable.
- Test conditions: the exact platform, client version, edition and mode tested.
Terms of service can describe a publisher’s stated policy, including live services such as multiplayer, matchmaking, leaderboards, events and persistent worlds. They do not replace a real test of your copy: a primarily single-player game may still require updates or server access, and stated terms alone do not establish how it behaves offline (Steam-hosted game agreement and terms of service).
