A publisher merger alone does not tell you whether a particular game will remain for sale, stay downloadable for existing owners, or keep working online. Check the exact game and edition on the relevant platform and in your market, then verify the publisher’s notice and your own account library. Those are separate questions, and a “yes” to one does not guarantee a “yes” to the others.
What “available” can mean for a game
Before looking for an answer, decide which kind of access matters to you. A game can stop being sold to new customers but remain in the library of someone who already owns it. It can also remain downloadable while some or all online features stop working. A store listing, an account entitlement, and functioning services are different things.

Platform documentation illustrates why these distinctions matter. Microsoft’s publishing documentation describes delisting as making a product no longer purchasable and says packaged products must remain discoverable so existing owners can download them. Epic Games Store Support says a delisted game can no longer be bought, but an existing owner or claimant keeps it in their library. Epic also warns that a game may be unplayable if required online services are discontinued. These are statements about the platforms’ documented behavior, not a universal guarantee for every game, storefront, or service.
It helps to think of availability as several separate checks rather than one permanent yes-or-no status. A store may stop accepting new purchases while the platform still exposes an existing entitlement. A title may be in a library but need an online service to authenticate or provide a feature. A publisher notice may address multiplayer or transactions without saying that downloads have ended. The answer that matters depends on what you want to do: buy, download, launch, or use a particular online feature.

How to check a specific game
Use the following sequence rather than treating a merger headline or a single store search result as a final answer.
- Identify the exact release. Record the full title, edition or bundle, platform, and country or market. Treat a base game, add-on, remaster, bundle, and release on another platform as separate listings unless the publisher explicitly groups them together.
- Check the official store for that platform and market. Open the storefront you would actually use and see whether it allows a new purchase. Do not rely on an old article, a search-engine snippet, or a listing from another country. Microsoft documents that a delisting can apply to all markets or selected markets, so the scope matters.
- If you already own it, check the acquiring account’s library. Sign in to the account that bought or claimed the game and look for it in the library, purchase history, or download page. A listing on a different account, platform, or edition may not be the entitlement you need.
- Look for a publisher notice about that title. Search the publisher’s official support or news pages for terms such as “delisted,” “service update,” “sunset,” and “support.” Read the notice’s date, affected game list, platforms, and market scope. A headline about a company transaction is not a title-specific availability notice.
- Check the service status separately. Look for information about multiplayer, authentication, downloadable content, in-game transactions, patches, and other features that may rely on online services. Identify what is ending and when, rather than assuming the entire game or every feature has the same status.
- If access is missing, troubleshoot the entitlement. Confirm the account used to acquire the game, then follow the platform’s license or download recovery steps. If those steps do not resolve it, contact the platform where you made the purchase; if the public notice does not explain a delisting, ask the publisher.
For a support request, include the game and edition, platform, market, account used to acquire it, and the exact error message. This helps distinguish a missing entitlement from a store restriction or an unavailable online service.
Keep a short record as you check. Write down the store and market you searched, the edition or bundle name, whether a purchase button is available, whether the title appears in the correct account, and the date of any publisher notice. That makes it easier to compare two platform releases and to spot whether a later announcement changes the picture. It also prevents a common mismatch: finding a listing for a different edition or region and treating it as proof about the release you own or intend to buy.
A search result is a useful way to locate a store page, but it is not the final status check. Search snippets can point to old pages, and an official listing from another storefront or market may have a different status. Open the page in the relevant store and confirm the transaction or library information there. If the page is unavailable or ambiguous, look for a publisher support notice and then ask the appropriate support team with the specific release details.
Read notices for scope, not just the headline
An announcement may cover only particular games, editions, stores, or regions. SEGA Support’s “SEGA CLASSICS” notice, updated November 5, 2025, says selected games and bundles would become unavailable for new purchase. It separates affected title lists by Steam, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation. That is why you should check the platform-specific list instead of assuming a notice applies to every release in a franchise.
Also distinguish a dated plan from a confirmed current status. A notice may announce an upcoming delisting or service shutdown; a store listing and a later support update may show what has happened since. Recheck the official pages when acting on an older announcement, especially if it names a future date or a limited market.
The same care applies to service updates. Activision Support says that, in most cases, online functionality—including multiplayer and in-game or in-app transactions—is disabled where applicable when a service is retired. EA service-retirement notices and Activision’s notice show why the status of online functions should be checked independently: the change described may concern services or features rather than every way to use the game. Do not infer from the end of multiplayer that a particular offline mode remains available unless the publisher says so.

When reading a notice, look for the verbs and objects it actually names. “No longer available for new purchase” answers a purchasing question. “Online services will be retired” points to a service change, but you still need to identify which functions rely on those services. A notice that names certain platforms or titles should not be stretched to cover releases it does not list. Likewise, a scheduled effective date is not the same as confirmation that the change has already taken place; check for a newer update or the current store status.
It is also worth separating a discontinued feature from the whole game. Activision’s wording refers to online functionality, including multiplayer and transactions, in most cases where applicable. That does not establish what will happen to any specific offline mode. EA’s service-retirement information is another reason to look at the affected service and title rather than assume every function shares one status. If a feature is important to your decision, seek a notice that addresses that feature directly.
What a merger can—and cannot—tell you
A merger can change who owns or publishes a game, but it is not itself a game-specific delisting notice. A regulatory filing can explain a proposed transaction and the companies’ stated rationale without answering whether one release will remain purchasable, downloadable, or playable after the transaction.
The UK Competition and Markets Authority’s 2022 issues statement about Microsoft and Activision records transaction context and the parties’ stated rationale, including gaming content and a cross-platform strategy. It does not establish the later availability of any individual game. A European Commission decision about PC game distribution explains that publishers commonly use licensing and distribution agreements and that rights ownership and other exploitation rights are often reserved to the licensor. That general context does not show what happened to the rights or contracts for an unnamed game.

Do not assume a title will be removed—or preserved—solely because its publisher is merging with another company.
That distinction matters because corporate ownership, publishing responsibility, storefront distribution, and a player’s account entitlement are not interchangeable facts. A regulator’s description of a proposed deal can explain the transaction’s context; it does not substitute for the publisher’s current notice or the store’s status for an individual release. Similarly, general information about licensing arrangements cannot establish the terms of an unnamed game’s rights or distribution contract. Avoid guessing about a particular title’s future from that background alone.
If you already own the game but cannot find it
A missing store page does not by itself prove that your purchase has disappeared. Check the account and platform entitlement before concluding that access has ended.

- Verify the purchasing account. Check the account that bought, redeemed, or claimed the game. If several accounts are used on the device, inspect each relevant library.
- Check the correct edition and platform. A bundle, add-on, remaster, or release for a different console or PC storefront may be listed separately from the base game.
- Use the platform’s recovery guidance. Bungie’s license and download recovery guide provides separate directions for PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, and Epic, and advises contacting the relevant platform when problems continue. Follow the steps for the platform where the entitlement was acquired.
- Separate a download problem from a service shutdown. If the game is in your library but will not launch or connect, compare the error with the publisher’s service notices. A working entitlement does not guarantee that online authentication or multiplayer remains operational.
- Escalate with useful details. Contact platform support for a purchase or download entitlement issue. Epic recommends contacting the publisher to learn why a particular game was delisted. Include the exact title, edition, platform, market, purchasing account, and error.
Epic Games Store Support puts its library policy plainly: “When a game is delisted from the Epic Games Store it can no longer be purchased, but if you already own or claimed it, you keep access to it in your library.” That is helpful evidence for an Epic account, but it should not be presented as a promise about every storefront or game. Microsoft’s publishing documentation similarly describes packaged products remaining discoverable so existing owners can download them. Check the platform where your entitlement lives rather than assuming one store’s documented approach applies everywhere.
If the title is absent from the library, start with the account and platform where you acquired it, not just the public store page. The platform’s recovery instructions may help identify a license or download issue; Bungie’s guide is an example with separate routes for PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, and Epic. If recovery steps do not resolve the problem, contact platform support. If your question is why the game was delisted or what a publisher notice means, Epic recommends contacting the publisher. Give the support team enough context to distinguish those issues rather than sending only the franchise name.
A useful way to compare two releases
If a game appears on more than one platform or in several editions, compare each listing independently. Record the date you checked, because listings and service notices can change.

This method avoids a common mistake: turning several separate statuses into one yes-or-no label. A release could be unavailable to new buyers in one store while an owner’s entitlement remains in a library; a different platform’s release could have a separate status; and online features could have their own shutdown timeline.
For example, do not assume that a platform-specific delisting list automatically answers whether a bundle on another platform can still be bought. SEGA’s November 5, 2025 “SEGA CLASSICS” notice separates its affected titles by Steam, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation. Use the section for the platform you are checking and match the actual title or bundle. If the game is also available in a different edition, verify that listing separately rather than transferring the first listing’s status to it.

If you already own it, check the library under the account that acquired it. If you need multiplayer or another online feature, find a current service notice that names the feature and platform. When the public information does not resolve your specific case, ask the publisher or platform support rather than guessing from the merger announcement.
In short, answer three questions separately: Is this exact release being sold in my store and market? Is it present in the library of the account that owns or claimed it? Are the features I want still supported? The merger may be relevant background, but only title-, platform-, and service-specific information can answer those practical questions.
