Start with the game’s own store-page disclosure, then check what it actually covers and who made the claim. On Steam, developers are asked to disclose certain AI-generated content that ships with a game and is consumed by players. A missing disclosure is not proof that a game is AI-free, and a visual style or an online rumor cannot establish how an asset was made.
What counts as generative AI use in a game?
For this check, distinguish generative AI from other kinds of game AI. A scripted enemy, pathfinding system, or other software that responds to player actions is not by itself evidence of generative AI. The relevant question is whether a generative tool helped make content—such as artwork, sound, narrative, or localization—or creates content while the game is running.
Also separate content players encounter from tools used behind the scenes. A developer might use software to speed up a general production task without shipping AI-generated material in the game. Steam’s current guidance says that general efficiency gains are not the focus of its generative-AI disclosure section. That means a Steam disclosure—or its absence—should not be treated as a complete account of every tool used in development.

How can I tell if a game uses AI? Follow this evidence-first check
- Open the game’s official store page. On Steam, look for the developer’s AI-generated-content disclosure. Read the disclosure itself rather than relying on an icon, a search snippet, a database entry, or someone else’s summary. Steam describes its Content Survey as a way to help customers understand product content and as part of its pre-release review process. Steamworks Content Survey documentation
- Record the wording and date. Note whether the statement names the game, describes a particular feature, or talks about something else, such as marketing material. A disclosure is a claim with a scope and a date; it may not answer every question about a title or reflect later changes.
- Classify the claimed use. Is the claim about content made during development and shipped in the game, or content generated during play? Does it concern visuals, dialogue, sound, or localization? Is it about player-facing content at all, or only about a workflow tool?
- Look for an attributable second source if needed. Check an official developer or publisher statement, production note, or a relevant performer or union statement. Prefer named, direct sources over anonymous posts. Confirm that the additional statement concerns the same game, content, and time period as the store disclosure.
- Label what remains uncertain. If the evidence is missing, ambiguous, or based only on visual clues, say that use is unconfirmed. Do not turn suspicion into a factual claim.
For a careful check, keep a small record as you go: the page or statement you read, who published it, the date you checked it, and the exact claim that matters. If the statement is revised later, that record helps distinguish the old wording from the new one. This is especially useful when a news report, a social post, and a store page appear to disagree: first establish which claim is newer and whether they are talking about the same type of content.
How to read Steam’s AI disclosure
Steam’s current Content Survey documentation describes a generative-AI section focused on AI-created content that ships with a game and is consumed by players. Its distinction between pre-generated and live-generated content matters: the two can raise different questions, and a short label may not explain the practical details.

Steam also says pre-release review evaluates AI-generated output under the same content promises as other content. Its documentation states: “Products on Steam must adhere to the content rules, regardless of whether it is disclosed in these surveys.” A disclosure is therefore not an exemption from Steam’s content rules, nor is it proof that every possible use has been listed. For live-generated content, distinguish the existence of the feature from the details of its safeguards. Steam asks developers to describe guardrails intended to prevent illegal output. A useful reading of a disclosure therefore asks what is generated, when it appears, and what the developer says is in place to limit problematic output. Do not assume that a statement about one feature describes every system or asset in the game.
The official Steamworks guidance includes the sentence: “Efficiency gains through the use of these tools is not the focus of this section.” Read that narrowly: it explains the focus of this part of the survey, not every tool a studio may use or every possible policy on every storefront. Steam’s older announcement introduced an AI disclosure section and said much of the disclosure would appear on store pages; for current scope, use the live Content Survey documentation rather than treating the original announcement as a complete description of present wording.

Check what the statement covers—not just whether it says “AI”
A statement can be accurate but narrower than a reader assumes. To interpret it, identify the object of the claim, the kind of generation, and the time period. A developer might be referring to a feature in the game, a particular asset, or material used to promote the game. Those are not interchangeable. A claim about a store image, for example, does not by itself establish that in-game art was generated; a claim about a dialogue feature does not establish how every line of dialogue was produced.
Scope can also change as platform wording changes. GamesRadar reported on January 20, 2026, that Valve’s wording had shifted toward content shipped with the game and consumed by players, and described an earlier question that expressly included store and community material. That report is useful for understanding the history of the change, but for what Steam currently asks developers to disclose, rely on the live Steamworks documentation. When comparing a disclosure with another source, use these questions:
- Who made the claim? A developer or publisher speaking for the title is more directly attributable than an anonymous poster. A platform describes its own survey rules; a union describes covered employment terms; a journalist may report a change or quote a source.
- What does it cover? Separate in-game assets, content made during live play, promotional or store material, community content, and general workflow tools.
- When was it made? Note the date and check whether a later statement or policy change affects the claim.
- Is it a disclosure, corroboration, or inference? A direct statement that names a use is different from an interpretation of an image or a report that does not establish the game’s production process.
These distinctions are important when two sources seem to conflict. One might discuss an AI-generated store image, while another addresses content players encounter in the game. Or a developer may describe a tool used in production, while Steam’s survey focuses on content shipped with the game. Before treating the claims as contradictory, compare their subject and date. If they address different things, report them separately rather than forcing them into a single yes-or-no answer.
What if the game has no disclosure?
Treat an absent label as an unanswered question, not a “no.” The available Steam documentation describes the survey and its purpose; it does not establish that every storefront has a comparable disclosure system or that every possible use is exhaustively reported. Nor does it establish that an absent Steam label proves no generative AI was used.

If you need a stronger answer, check the developer’s and publisher’s official pages or statements for a direct explanation. Search for a specific claim—such as whether a named asset or feature was AI-generated—rather than relying on a broad accusation. If the sources do not settle it, report the limit plainly: for example, “I could not verify whether this title uses generative AI.” Do not say the game does or does not use it without evidence that supports that conclusion.
Visual inspection alone is particularly weak evidence. A polished, strange, inconsistent, or stylistically unusual image does not reveal how it was created. The cited platform guidance does not offer a reliable visual test for AI provenance. Treat visual analysis as a reason to ask a question, not as confirmation.
Likewise, do not treat an online list or a reposted screenshot as the final word if you can check the original page. A summary may omit a qualifying sentence, describe an older version of a policy, or discuss marketing material rather than shipped content. Where the original claim cannot be found, say that the claim is unverified instead of implying it has been confirmed.
How to check claims about AI-generated voices or performer likenesses
Voice and likeness claims need more specific evidence than a general “AI used” label. Look for a statement from the developer or publisher, or for relevant performer or union material that identifies the covered project or work. Avoid assuming that a rule applying to one performer or production governs every game, every voice, or every AI-generated line.
SAG-AFTRA’s 2025 Interactive Media Agreement, approved July 9, 2025, includes consent and disclosure requirements for covered uses of AI digital replicas. Its FAQ says employers must provide a reasonably specific description of intended use, with details that can include the project code name, genre, role, and whether a character will be used for real-time generated dialogue. The agreement also requires usage reports for digital replicas to help identify possible employer non-compliance. These provisions concern work covered by that agreement; they are not a universal label for all games, non-union performers, or every generated voice. When a claim involves a performer, keep the question narrow: is it about a digital replica, a specific covered role, or real-time generated dialogue? The agreement’s FAQ describes intended-use information and usage reporting in the context of covered work. It does not establish that all generated speech uses a performer’s replica, or that every performer has the same contractual protections. A union statement is most useful when it can be matched to the project and the type of use at issue.

When telling someone whether a title uses generative AI, make the strength and scope of your answer visible. A concise evidence note can identify the platform, the source, what it says, and what it does not establish:
- Directly disclosed: “The Steam page’s developer disclosure says the game contains live-generated dialogue.” Link to the page or statement and include the date you checked it.
- Officially stated elsewhere: “The publisher says AI-assisted localization was used; that statement does not say that in-game dialogue is generated during play.” Link to the publisher’s statement.
- Unconfirmed: “I found no disclosure or attributable statement confirming AI-generated content. That does not establish that the game is AI-free.”
These formulations keep a factual disclosure separate from a conclusion that goes beyond it. They also help readers understand whether the concern is about shipped assets, live generation, workflow tools, or a performer’s digital replica.
A useful final check is to ask whether a reader could follow your evidence and reach the same limited conclusion. Name the source and date, quote or summarize its actual wording, and distinguish what it directly establishes from what you infer. If a platform page says that a particular type of content is included, do not expand that into a claim about all production tools. If no reliable source confirms a use, say so plainly.

Does a missing Steam AI disclosure mean the game does not use generative AI?
