Usually, yes—but only from the account that bought the game and only while that platform still honors the title’s entitlement. Sign in to the purchasing account, confirm the transaction in its order history or receipt, and look in the platform’s Purchased, Library, or redownload area. If the store shows a price, do not buy again until you have checked the account, hidden content, license status, subscription or sharing history, and any service error.
Deleting an installed game normally removes local files, not the account record. Redownloading after a delisting, account closure, subscription expiry, or platform change is a separate question that must be checked for the specific game, region, and console generation.
Start with the account and the purchase record
Digital games are licensed to an account, not permanently attached to a console, Windows installation, or the profile currently selected on the device. A console can run a game supplied by another account, a family-sharing arrangement, or a subscription, which can make a title look purchased when it is not owned by you.
- Identify the platform, region, console generation, and exact title. Editions, remasters, downloadable expansions, and cross-generation versions can have separate records.
- Sign in to the account that made the payment. Check the account email, username, and any family or child-account arrangement before troubleshooting the console.
- Open order history or the original receipt. Record the order date, order number, product name, region, and whether the transaction completed. A declined or reversed payment is not a completed purchase.
- Open the platform’s Purchased, Library, Redownload, or equivalent page. Check whether the game is already installed, hidden, represented by a virtual card, or listed under a different edition.
- Only then diagnose a download problem. License errors, service outages, old system software, network failures, and insufficient storage can all prevent a valid purchase from downloading.
If the receipt is present but the store still asks for payment, treat that as an entitlement or account problem first. Keep the purchase details available and contact the platform before repurchasing.

A quick decision path
Use this order to avoid the most common mistake—buying a second copy before finding the first entitlement:
- Storefront asks for money: stop and switch accounts until the account named on the receipt is active.
- No library entry: remove filters, inspect hidden items, and check the platform’s dedicated redownload or virtual-card area.
- Library entry is locked: determine whether access came from a subscription or sharing rather than a one-time purchase, then refresh the license if the platform supports it.
- Download will not begin: check service status, system software, network connection, and free space.
- Receipt and entitlement still disagree: contact support with the order number and error details instead of paying again.
This sequence matters because a storage or network fix cannot restore ownership, and an account correction cannot create free disk space.
What kind of access did you have?
One-time purchase
A completed one-time transaction should appear in the buying account’s library or redownload list. It may still be unavailable if the account was closed, the platform changed its policy, the title has a region or generation restriction, or the store is experiencing an error. The receipt establishes that a transaction occurred; it does not by itself guarantee that every future platform supports the same download.

Subscription-catalog access
A game supplied through a subscription catalog is playable only while the subscription and the title’s catalog availability meet the service’s conditions. When the subscription expires or the catalog changes, the game can remain installed but locked. That lock is not evidence that a one-time purchase disappeared. Check the subscription’s current status and whether the title is still listed in its catalog before looking for a purchase refund or repurchase.
Shared, borrowed, or family access
Another account may have supplied the license through console sharing, family access, or a shared device. You can lose access when that account changes its settings, stops sharing, or is no longer signed in. Check the other account’s transaction history rather than assuming your own account owns the title. A game that launches on a shared console is not automatically recorded as a purchase on every local profile.
Free claims and incomplete payments
A free promotion, a temporary trial, or a payment authorization that never settled may create a library entry that later disappears. Confirm that the order is marked completed and that the product is recorded as owned, not merely available during checkout. Steam, for example, explains that a game temporarily added during payment authorization can be removed when the card transaction is declined.
Physical-to-digital and bundled access
If you originally used a disc, cartridge, bundle code, or hardware promotion, identify what entitlement was actually created. A digital license may cover one edition while the installed copy is a different edition or region. Give support the exact product name and any bundle or redemption details rather than relying on the game’s shortened title.

From a web browser
- Sign in to the PlayStation account that made the purchase.
- Open the avatar menu.
- Choose Game Library > Purchased.
- Select the game and choose Download.
On PS5
- From the Games home screen, open Game Library.
- Select Your Collection.
- Choose the game, then select Download.
On PS4
- Open Library.
- Choose Purchased.
- Select the game and choose Download.
With the PlayStation App
- Open Game Library > Purchased.
- Select the game.
- Choose Download to Console.
Remote downloads require the console to be linked to the account and configured for remote-download features. If the game is already installed, the library may show Play or an installed status instead of a new download button. A different console can also display a different generation or edition, so check the product page carefully.
If a PlayStation purchase is missing or locked
- Review the account’s transaction history and match the product to the receipt.
- Check hidden games in the library.
- Review Console Sharing and Offline Play on PS5 or primary-PS4 activation where relevant.
- Restore licenses. On PS5, use Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses. On PS4, use Settings > Account Management > Restore Licenses.
- If access came through PlayStation Plus, verify that the subscription is active and that a catalog title has not left the catalog.
A lock icon, an absent tile, or a catalog prompt is a symptom to investigate; none alone proves that a completed one-time purchase failed. If several users share the console, verify which account is set as the purchaser or sharing account before changing activation settings.
If the PlayStation download will not start
Restart the download, check PlayStation service status, install available system-software updates, and verify free storage. Storage hardware can solve a capacity shortage only; it cannot recreate an account entitlement or restore a missing license. If the download begins and stalls, test the network connection and try again after a service interruption has cleared. Note the exact error code because support can distinguish a server, license, and storage failure more quickly when that code is included.
Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch
Nintendo ties redownload rights to the Nintendo Account that purchased the item. If the eShop displays a price instead of a download option, the currently selected account is not the purchasing account. For a child account, Nintendo says the receipt is sent to the parent or guardian’s email, so check that mailbox.
Verify the purchase
- Open the eShop with the suspected purchasing Nintendo Account.
- Check the account’s purchase record and the email receipt.
- Confirm that the item is marked Purchased, not merely listed in a history of viewed or previously available content.
Nintendo’s wording is explicit: “Only a Nintendo Account that has purchased a game can download it at no cost.” If there is no purchase record, another person who used the console may have supplied the game. A local user profile alone does not prove that its Nintendo Account paid for the title.
Check the console before redownloading
Look in the HOME Menu and All Software first. A game that is already installed does not need a second download. For a missing title, open Virtual Game Cards, choose the user linked to the purchasing account, select the game, and load it on the system. Confirm that the system is online when the virtual-card workflow requires a connection.
If the virtual card is missing
Nintendo’s troubleshooting directs you to check for hidden virtual cards and to verify that redownload has not been disabled in the eShop. If the title still does not appear after the account and purchase record match, use Nintendo’s missing-content support process with the order details. Do not assume that deleting software deleted the purchase; first establish whether the title is hidden, unloaded, or assigned to another user.
Older Nintendo systems
Nintendo’s UK guidance for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS describes redownload through eShop purchase history:
Rank #3
- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Wii U: open Menu > History > Your Downloads.
- 3DS or 2DS: open Menu > Settings / Other > Redownloadable Software.
The guidance says a previously purchased game may be downloadable again. Service availability and individual title support can change, so treat those menu paths as a way to check the account rather than a guarantee that every old item remains obtainable. Older systems may also have different regional stores and account rules, making the country and system generation important details for support.
Steam: confirm ownership and payment completion
On Steam, first make sure the client or website is signed in to the correct Steam account and that the Library is showing all games rather than a filtered view. Search the library by title and check hidden or uninstalled entries. If you use Family Sharing, determine whether the other person’s library is currently available; shared access is not the same as your own purchase.
Also verify that the payment completed. Steam explains that a game temporarily added during payment authorization can be removed if the card transaction is declined. In that situation, there is no completed purchase to redownload; a valid transaction is required. Compare the order history with your bank statement, but treat the platform’s completed order record as the key ownership check.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If the account is correct, the library is unfiltered, and the completed transaction is still absent, gather the receipt and contact Steam Support. Avoid buying a second copy while the first transaction is being investigated. Include the transaction date, payment status, account name, and any temporary authorization or reversal message.
Xbox: do not borrow menu paths from another platform
Xbox menus and entitlement rules vary by console generation and account setup. Current Xbox-specific instructions should be checked in Xbox Support for the exact console and account before following a recovery procedure. The general test remains the same: sign in to the buying account, confirm the completed order, look in the owned-games library, and distinguish a purchase from Game Pass, sharing, or another temporary access method.
Do not use PlayStation or Nintendo menu names as if they were Xbox instructions. If the title is an Xbox Play Anywhere or cross-generation product, ask support which version the order covers and whether the current device is eligible.
Delisted games: being unavailable for sale is not the same as losing a redownload
A publisher can remove a game from a storefront while a platform still recognizes earlier licenses. Conversely, a title can be unavailable to previous purchasers because of a platform shutdown, account problem, region restriction, or changed service support. There is no single redownload rule that applies to every store, game, region, or console generation.

A delisted listing and a missing personal license are separate symptoms.

Region, edition, and generation pitfalls
A correct account can still show the wrong result when the product details do not match. Check these possibilities:
- Region: the account country, store region, and redeemed code may not match.
- Edition: standard, deluxe, complete, remastered, and downloadable versions can have different product records.
- Generation: a PS4, PS5, Switch, or older-system version may not be interchangeable.
- Bundle contents: a bundle may include a base game, expansion, or trial with separate entries.
- Language or publication differences: regional listings can use different names while representing different products.
Give support the exact order description instead of only the title printed on the box or remembered from the console menu.

| What you see | Most useful checks | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| The store shows a price | Switch to the account on the receipt; verify the order record and region. | It does not prove the original purchase was lost. |
| The game is absent from the library | Remove filters, check hidden items, confirm the correct edition and account, and inspect virtual-card or redownload areas. | It does not prove that no one on the console bought it. |
| A lock icon appears | Check subscription status, sharing settings, and restore licenses where the platform provides that function. | It does not distinguish a subscription lock from a failed one-time purchase by itself. |
| The download button does nothing | Check service status, system software, network connectivity, and free storage; restart the download. | Extra storage cannot repair an entitlement or license. |
| The game downloaded but will not launch | Check the signed-in account, subscription validity, sharing authorization, and any platform license refresh. | Successful installation does not establish that the current account owns the license. |
| The transaction is missing or reversed | Review payment status and contact platform support with the order information. | A checkout authorization or temporary trial is not a completed purchase. |
| The game is listed but installation pauses | Check free space, network stability, service status, and whether an update is required. | A stalled transfer does not prove the license is invalid. |
What to send support before asking for a correction
Contact the platform’s support team when the receipt and account do not produce a downloadable entitlement, or when a known purchase is blocked after a delisting. Supply:
- Account email or online ID, without sending your password.
- Game title, edition, platform, console generation, and region.
- Purchase date, order number, and the email address that received the receipt.
- A screenshot or exact wording of the price prompt, lock icon, error code, or missing-library state.
- Whether access originally came from a purchase, subscription, sharing, free claim, or physical-to-digital entitlement.
- Steps already tried, including license restoration, account switching, service-status checks, and a download restart.
Do not repurchase until support has checked the original entitlement. A second transaction can complicate refunds and still will not solve a platform-wide service or account problem. Keep copies of receipts and screenshots, but never send a password or payment-security code.
Account closure and the meaning of a digital license
The March 2026 United States PlayStation terms state that deleting or closing an account may cause loss of access to purchased content. Those terms describe a PlayStation Store purchase as a personal license to use the product, not ownership of the product itself. This is a PlayStation-specific terms statement, not a universal rule about every digital store or every jurisdiction. If you are considering closing an account, review the platform’s current terms and download or access requirements first.
Account closure is different from deleting a local game. Removing software from a drive usually leaves the purchase record intact; closing the account can affect the record and access itself. Preserve the account credentials and transaction information if continued access matters.
Optional storage help
If the console reports that there is not enough free space, compatible external storage can provide room for an installation. Check the platform’s supported capacity, connection standard, formatting requirements, and whether a game must be moved back to internal storage to run. Storage is relevant only after the account and license are valid; it cannot make a delisted game reappear or turn shared access into personal ownership.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I download a game again after deleting it?
Usually, yes. Sign in to the account that bought it, open the platform’s Purchased, Library, or redownload area, and install it again. Check the receipt and account first if the store shows a price.
Why is my purchased game asking me to buy it again?
The device may be signed in to a different account, the title may be hidden or a different edition, or access may have come from a subscription or sharing. Verify the completed order, region, and license status before paying again.
Can I redownload a game after it was delisted?
Sometimes, but there is no universal rule. A delisted game may remain available to previous purchasers, or access may be limited by the platform, title, region, generation, or account status. Ask official support about the exact game.

Deleting local files normally does not remove the account’s purchase record. Account closure, a reversed payment, subscription expiry, or a platform-service change can affect access separately.
What if the game came from PlayStation Plus, Game Pass, or another subscription?
Check that the subscription is active and that the title remains in the catalog. A game can stay installed but become locked when the subscription expires or the catalog changes.
What should I do if Nintendo eShop shows a price?
Switch to the Nintendo Account named on the receipt and inspect its purchase record. Nintendo states that only the account that purchased a game can download it at no cost; a child-account receipt may be sent to a parent or guardian.
Can extra storage fix a missing digital license?
No. External storage helps only when there is insufficient free space and is compatible with the platform. It cannot restore ownership, fix an account mismatch, or make a delisted title appear.

The Bottom Line
Check the buying account, completed receipt, and platform library before spending again. Then distinguish a purchase from subscription or shared access, refresh licenses or virtual cards where applicable, and rule out service, network, software, and storage problems. Delisted titles require a title-specific answer from the platform, and no menu shortcut can replace proof of entitlement.
