Open Settings > Storage, then tap a category to see what is consuming space. For individual files, use Settings > Storage > Free up space > Browse or open the Files app and sort a category by size. The exact labels can vary by Pixel model, Android version and locale.
Storage and memory are different
Storage is the long-term space where your Pixel keeps photos, videos, music, downloads, apps and their data. Memory (RAM) is the working space Android and apps use while they are running. Closing apps may affect memory, but it does not remove files from storage. Use the Storage tools below when your goal is to reclaim space or identify what is filling the phone.
Start by checking the free-space indicator in Settings. Google says a Pixel can have issues when less than 10% of storage is available. That is a general troubleshooting guideline, not a guarantee that every phone will slow down at exactly that point, but it makes the free-space figure worth checking before you troubleshoot other symptoms.
The capacity printed on the phone or its packaging will not equal the amount available for your files. Android, preinstalled software and system data use part of the internal storage. The useful number for cleanup is the available-space figure shown by your Pixel, not the advertised capacity alone.

Choose the right way to inspect storage
| Route | Best for | What you can see | Version or device notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Settings > Storage > category | A quick diagnosis | How much space broad categories such as apps, photos and downloads use | This is Google’s standard first step; wording can vary. |
| Settings > Storage > Free up space > Browse | Finding files beyond the summary categories | A more detailed list of files that can be reviewed for deletion or transfer | The option may be named or arranged differently on some Android releases. |
| Files app > category > sort by size | Locating the largest individual files | Files grouped by type and sorted by name, date or size | Some Files app steps require Android 14 or later and can differ by device. |
Use the first route to decide where to look, then use Browse or Files to identify the actual items. A category total is an explanation of usage, not an instruction to erase everything in that category. Photos, downloads and app data can all include files you still need.
Check category usage in Settings
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap Storage. If you do not see it immediately, use Settings search for “Storage.”
- Review the free-space figure and the category breakdown.
- Tap the category that looks unusually large. The next screen should identify the related apps, files or content and offer any available management actions.
This category view answers the basic question—what type of content is using storage—without requiring a cleanup. Read the figures first. Deleting items before you know which category is responsible makes it harder to understand the result and increases the risk of removing something you still need.
If the figures seem to change while you are using the phone, wait for an operation such as an app update, download or backup to finish and check again. Android may also recalculate a category after files are removed. The breakdown is most useful as a guide to where the largest totals are, rather than as a promise that every byte will be assigned to a single visible folder.

Use Storage’s Browse option
- Open Settings.
- Tap Storage.
- Tap Free up space.
- Tap Browse, if that option appears.
- Open a category or folder, review the files, and select only items you recognize and no longer need.
Browse is useful when a large category does not explain itself. It can expose downloaded documents, videos, audio and other files that are not obvious from the top-level chart. If your Pixel uses different labels, look for an equivalent option that opens a file browser from the Storage screen.
Some Storage help steps are limited to Android 11 and later, so an older release may not show every control described here. If a path is absent, do not treat that as evidence that the files are hidden or unavailable; use the Files app route instead.
Use the Files app and sort by size
- Open the Files app.
- Choose a category such as Downloads, Images, Videos, Audio or Documents.
- Open the sort control and choose Size. You can also sort by name or date when you are looking for a particular item.
- Start with the largest files, open or preview them where possible, and verify that they are safe to remove or copy elsewhere.
Sorting by size is usually the fastest way to find a few large videos, archives or installers that account for most of the used space. The Files app interface is not identical on every Pixel; if a category or sort control is missing, use the Storage Browse route or the app’s search function instead.
When a file appears in more than one view, avoid deleting it twice or assuming that two entries are duplicates. Check the filename, location, date and size, and preview the content when possible. A shortcut, thumbnail or app-managed entry may not be the same thing as the original file.

What a large category usually means
Photos and videos
Camera photos and videos can grow rapidly, especially when a phone records high-resolution or long clips. Review the largest videos first. If your photos and videos are backed up, Google’s cleanup guidance includes removing backed-up copies from the phone. Confirm that the backup has completed and that you can view the items from your account before deleting local copies. A backed-up item is not the same as an item you have personally checked; do not assume a file is safe to remove merely because it appears in a photo app.
Removing a local copy frees phone storage but does not create another backup. Keep in mind which account contains the backup, particularly if the phone has more than one Google Account signed in. If you cannot open the backed-up item from that account, retain the local file or make another copy first.
Downloads and other files
The Downloads category often contains PDFs, installers, exported documents, images and media saved by a browser or another app. Open unfamiliar files before deleting them. A download may be a receipt, travel document or work file that is still needed. If a file came from an app with its own library, remove it from that app when possible so the app can update its index correctly.
Sort by date when you are cleaning a recent burst of downloads, and by size when a few large files are the problem. Do not bulk-delete a folder merely because its name looks generic; review its contents and any file you may need offline.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsApps and app data
Apps consume both the application itself and data they create while you use them. Large games, offline maps, video downloads, podcasts and editing projects can make one app appear much larger than its download size. Tap the app’s entry to see the available actions, then check the app’s own download or media-management screen before deleting anything.
An app’s displayed total can include permanent data as well as temporary cache. That is why clearing a small cache may make little visible difference when the app has substantial offline media or local projects. Work from the app’s own controls first when they are available.
Media managed inside another app
Some downloaded music, shows, podcasts, maps and social-media media are controlled by the app that downloaded them. A generic file deletion may leave the app’s database out of sync, while deleting inside the app removes the item cleanly. When a category shows substantial app data but the Files app does not show an obvious file, open the responsible app and look for Downloads, Offline, Storage, Media or Manage downloads.

Decide what to remove before you tap Delete
| Action | What it removes | Check first | Risk level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Delete downloaded files | Selected files in Downloads or another folder | Open the file and confirm it is no longer needed; check whether it exists elsewhere. | Low for verified duplicates or obsolete downloads; high for unidentified documents. |
| Remove backed-up photos from the phone | Local copies while the backed-up versions remain in your account | Confirm backup completion and access to the account. | Moderate; deleting before backup or from the wrong account can cause data loss. |
| Uninstall an unused app | The app and its local data, subject to the app’s own account or sync behavior | Check whether you need offline content, unsynced projects or saved settings. | Moderate; reinstalling may not restore local-only data. |
| Clear cache | Temporary files created by one app | Expect the app to rebuild temporary data; some apps may open more slowly once. | Usually low, but app-specific behavior varies. |
| Clear storage | All data stored by one app on the phone | Try deleting data inside the app first and verify account credentials or backups. | High; this permanently deletes the app’s local data. |
| Copy files to a computer or account, then delete local copies | Only the phone copies you select after transfer | Open the transferred files on the destination before deleting originals. | Moderate; an incomplete transfer can leave no usable copy. |
Free space safely, one category at a time
Delete downloads you have verified
In Files, open the relevant category, sort by size or date, select obsolete files and choose the delete command. Check the trash or recycle area used by your file manager if you need to recover an accidental deletion. Do not bulk-delete a whole category simply because it is large; categories can contain both disposable downloads and important personal records.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Remove backed-up photos from the device
Use the photo app’s storage-management option when available, and choose the action that removes local copies of backed-up items. Keep the phone connected long enough for backup to finish. If an image is not backed up, copy it to another destination first. Removing the local copy reduces on-device storage but does not create an additional backup; it only relies on the existing account copy.
Uninstall apps you no longer use
From the Storage category or the app’s information screen, select an app you recognize and choose Uninstall. Consider whether the app contains drafts, downloaded media, game saves or files that have never synchronized. If you might need it later, confirm that its data is tied to an account or export the data before uninstalling.
Clear cache without confusing it with storage
Open Settings > Apps > See all apps, choose the app, tap Storage & cache, then choose Clear cache if the option is present. Cache consists of temporary data. Google notes that some apps may be slower the next time they open because those temporary files must be created again.
Use Clear storage only when you accept data loss
On the same screen, Clear storage (sometimes shown as Clear data) permanently deletes the app’s local data. Google’s guidance is: “Clear storage: Permanently deletes all app data. Try to delete the data within the app first.” Follow that advice literally. Remove offline downloads, drafts or account data from inside the app first, and make sure you know the sign-in details and recovery method before resetting the app.

Copy files off the Pixel
Transfer to a computer with USB
A cable is optional for diagnosing storage; it is useful when you want an additional copy before deleting local files. Google warns that not every USB cable can transfer files, so use a cable that supports data, not charging only.
- Unlock the Pixel.
- Connect it to the computer with the USB cable.
- On the Pixel, swipe down to open notifications and tap Charging this device via USB.
- Choose File transfer.
- On the computer, open the Pixel’s storage, copy the selected folders or files, and wait for the transfer to finish.
- Open several copied files from the computer to verify that they work.
- Only after verification, delete the original phone copies using Files or the relevant app.
If the USB notification never appears, reconnect the cable, unlock the phone and try another USB port or a known data-capable cable. A cable that charges the Pixel can still be incapable of showing its files to a computer. If the computer still cannot see the phone, try a different data cable or computer rather than repeatedly deleting and recopying files.

Upload a copy to your Google Account
Google also documents uploading files to a Google Account. This route avoids a cable and computer, but it requires a working internet connection and enough available account storage. Upload the files, wait for completion, and open them from the account before deleting the phone copies. The account upload is a copy workflow; it does not automatically remove the originals from the Pixel.
Cloud upload can be convenient for a small set of documents or photos, while USB transfer may be more practical for many large videos when you have a computer and a suitable cable. Google documents both approaches without ranking one as universally best. Choose based on connectivity, destination space and how you intend to verify the copy.

If the numbers or options do not look right
The Storage menu is missing or named differently
Use Settings search for “Storage,” then look for a screen showing device capacity and free space. Pixel menus change with Android releases, device variants and language settings. If you cannot find Free up space > Browse, open the Files app and inspect categories there.
Files app steps differ from the instructions
Some Files app features, including parts of the category and sorting workflow, depend on device software; Google specifically notes that some steps require Android 14 or later. Use the controls that are present on your phone rather than installing an unfamiliar cleaner app. The basic goal remains the same: open a category, sort or search, inspect the largest items, and remove only verified files.
Deleting something did not free the expected space
Check whether the item went to a trash folder, whether the app keeps an offline copy, or whether the displayed storage figure has not refreshed yet. Reopen Storage after the deletion. If the space was occupied by app data, deleting a visible download may have little effect; return to the category breakdown and inspect the largest app entries.
An app is still large after clearing its cache
Cache is only temporary data. The app itself, offline downloads and permanent app data remain. Look inside the app for downloaded media, or review the app’s Storage screen. Do not choose Clear storage merely to reduce a number unless you are prepared to lose the app’s local data.
Storage is nearly full even after obvious cleanup
Return to the category chart and compare the largest totals again. A substantial app-data total, offline media library or backed-up photo collection may be responsible even when Downloads is empty. Work through one category at a time and allow the Storage screen to refresh after a large deletion or transfer.

A practical order for reclaiming space
- Check Settings > Storage and note the largest category.
- Open that category and identify the largest app, folder or file group.
- Use Browse or Files sorted by size to locate specific items.
- Delete verified downloads and duplicates first.
- Remove backed-up photos only after confirming the backup.
- Uninstall unused apps after checking for local-only data.
- Delete offline media from the app that downloaded it.
- Use Clear cache for temporary data when appropriate.
- Copy important files to a computer or Google Account, verify the copies, then remove the phone originals.
- Reopen Storage and check the free-space figure.
This sequence keeps diagnosis separate from deletion and moves from the easiest-to-reverse choices toward actions that can permanently remove app data.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the fastest way to see what is using storage on a Pixel?
Open Settings, tap Storage, and tap the largest category. For individual items, open Settings > Storage > Free up space > Browse, or use Files and sort a category by size.
Does closing apps free storage?
No. Closing apps affects working memory, not the files and app data stored on the phone. Use the Storage screen and Files app to identify storage usage.
Is clearing cache the same as clearing storage?
No. Clearing cache removes temporary data and an app may be slower on its next launch. Clear storage permanently deletes the app’s local data, so try removing data inside the app first.
Why is an app still taking a lot of space after I clear its cache?
The app itself, offline downloads and permanent app data remain after cache removal. Check the app’s own download or media controls before considering Clear storage.
Can I delete photos from my Pixel after they are backed up?
You can remove local copies using the photo app’s storage-management option, but first confirm that backup finished and that you can open the items from the correct account. Removing the phone copy does not create another backup.
Why does my USB cable charge the Pixel but not show files on my computer?
Some USB cables provide charging only. Use a data-capable cable, unlock the phone, tap the “Charging this device via USB” notification and select File transfer.
Recommended Free Tools
What should I do if the Browse option is missing?
Menu names vary by Android version and device. Use Settings search for Storage, then open the Files app, choose a category and sort by size or date. Some file-browsing steps require Android 14 or later.
How much free space should a Pixel have?
Google’s Pixel troubleshooting guidance says a phone can have issues when less than 10% of storage is available. Treat that as a qualified troubleshooting warning, not a guaranteed performance threshold for every device.
The Bottom Line
Start at Settings > Storage to identify the largest category, then use Browse or Files sorted by size to find the specific files. Delete only verified items, manage downloads inside the app that created them, and treat Clear storage as a permanent reset. If you copy files to a computer or Google Account, verify the copies before removing the phone originals.
