In the United States, a federal campaign-finance record can connect a reported donation with your name and, when itemization rules apply, your address, occupation, employer, contribution amount, date and recipient committee. Anyone can search those public filings. A record shows what a committee reported—not how you voted, every political belief you hold, or why you gave. To check your own record, search the Federal Election Commission (FEC) database for federal races, then use the appropriate state or local disclosure office for other contests.
What a political-donation record can reveal
A campaign-finance entry is a disclosure filed by a political committee. At the federal level, the entry can identify the donor and describe the transaction. When a person gives more than $200 to a federal campaign during an election cycle, the FEC says the committee must report the contributor’s name, address, occupation and employer. The contribution amount, date and receiving committee are also part of the transaction record.
The $200 rule is a federal reporting rule, not a universal standard. The FEC describes a calendar-year period for contributions to political-action committees (PACs) and party committees, while its guidance for an individual giving to a federal campaign refers to the election cycle. State and local jurisdictions set their own thresholds and fields, so do not apply the federal rule to a city, county or state filing without checking that jurisdiction’s instructions.

What the record does not prove
- Your vote: A contribution does not show how you voted in any election.
- Your complete ideology: One payment is not a complete map of your political beliefs, priorities or affiliations.
- Your motive: The filing generally does not explain whether you gave because of a policy, relationship, event, professional interest, protest, access or another reason.
- Identity with certainty: A name match can refer to another person with the same or a similar name. An unfamiliar address or employer is a warning to investigate rather than assume the entry is yours.
A careful description is, “The filing lists a contribution from a person under this name.” Saying that the entry proves the person supports every position of a candidate goes beyond what the filing establishes. If you are assessing someone’s views, use direct statements or independent evidence and label any interpretation as an inference.
Start by identifying the jurisdiction
The office that holds a record depends on the race involved. Use this decision path before searching:

The FEC’s Combined Federal/State Disclosure and Election Directory is a starting point for locating the right state office. Treat the directory as a routing tool: after finding an agency, follow that agency’s current database and filing instructions.
How to search your federal donation history
1. Gather details that distinguish you from namesakes
Write down the full name used when you donated, likely spelling variations, approximate dates, the candidate or committee, and the address or employer that may have appeared on the filing. These details help you separate your entries from people with common names. If you gave through different addresses or changed employers, search each relevant combination.
2. Open the FEC individual-contributions or browse-data search
Use the FEC’s official individual-contributions and browse-data tools rather than an unofficial people-search service. Candidate-focused FEC pages also provide filed reports and itemized individual-contribution lists. The available online period can differ by office, so an empty result is not proof that no filing exists.

3. Search the donor name
Enter your surname and given name, then repeat with initials, punctuation differences or a shortened first name if the system permits. Name formatting in a committee’s report may not match the spelling you use today.
4. Narrow and cross-check the results
When filters are available, limit the search by candidate or committee, amount, date range, location and report. Open the underlying transaction and filing, not just the summary total. Compare the reported address, occupation or employer with your own history. A matching name without matching contextual details should remain an unresolved possibility, not a confirmed identification.
5. Read the filing context
Check which committee submitted the entry, the report period, transaction date, amount and any amendment indicator. Committee reports can be amended. A later correction may update the database while the original report remains publicly accessible, so preserve the report context when you save or cite an entry.
6. Check other committees and cycles
A single search may miss a contribution reported under a different committee name or in another election cycle. Repeat the search for the recipient’s authorized committee, party committees and PACs, using the relevant time period. The applicable itemization period can differ by committee type, which is why the committee category matters.
How to check state and local donations
- Identify the contest: Record the state, county or municipality, office sought and election year.
- Find the filing authority: Use the FEC federal/state directory to locate the responsible state office, then verify the office’s current website and instructions. A local clerk or ethics agency may be the correct destination for a municipal committee.
- Use the jurisdiction’s search fields: Search your name and, where offered, committee, date, amount, address or employer. State systems may use different spellings, file formats and terminology.
- Confirm the rule for that jurisdiction: Check the agency’s threshold, reporting period, publication schedule and amendment process. State disclosure level, frequency and content vary.
- Save the official filing: Keep the report name, filing period and transaction details with any notes so that a later amendment or system change does not remove the context.
The National Conference of State Legislatures provides an overview of contribution-disclosure concepts, but the controlling source for a particular donation is the applicable statute and filing office.

When will a donation become public?
For federal reports, the FEC says campaign-finance disclosure reports generally must be made available to the public within 48 hours after receipt. Electronically filed reports have a 24-hour publication target in the same guidance. Those are federal timing rules, not promises about every state or local system. A committee’s filing schedule, agency processing and later amendments can affect when a transaction appears in a search.

FEC records cover different periods depending on the office and filing. Candidate pages may not display an identical historical span for every House, Senate or presidential committee. If you are looking for an older payment, check the candidate’s filed reports and downloadable data as well as the default search view.
Bulk downloads and deeper analysis
The FEC provides transaction-level bulk data for people who need to examine many records or calculate totals. Update schedules vary from daily to weekly, so a downloaded file can lag a newly filed or amended report. Keep the download date, committee identifier, report name and filing period with your analysis.
- Do not add transactions from separate cycles without labeling the periods.
- Do not treat a committee’s summary total as a second contribution; reconcile it with the itemized transactions.
- Do not discard amended-report indicators. A corrected transaction can otherwise look like a duplicate or unexplained change.
- Do not infer that an absent itemized entry means no donation occurred; a contribution may fall below an itemization threshold or be held in a different reporting system.
How to handle a wrong or outdated federal entry
The FEC directs a person who believes an entry is incorrect to contact the committee that filed the report. Explain the transaction, provide identifying details that help the committee locate it, and request a correction. The committee—not the FEC search interface—submits an amended report.
After the committee files an amendment, the FEC database can update. The original report nevertheless remains public. When documenting the issue, retain the original transaction, the committee’s response and the amended filing so readers can see why the record changed.

If the entry belongs to someone else with a similar name, tell the committee that the identity appears mismatched and supply the contextual facts that distinguish you. Avoid publicly posting more personal information than the correction requires.
Privacy and permitted use of contributor information
Public availability is not an unrestricted license to reuse donor data. The FEC says federal law and Commission rules restrict selling or using individual contributor information from FEC reports to solicit political or charitable contributions or for commercial purposes, subject to stated exceptions. The agency describes different treatment for committee information and certain bona fide academic-research and journalistic communications.
Those restrictions are fact-specific and are not a substitute for legal advice. Before redistributing names, addresses or employer details, read the current FEC guidance, the governing law and any applicable advisory opinions. A lawful public-record search for your own information is different from building a marketing list or using donor data to solicit money.

Use the filing’s level of certainty
Write “A federal committee’s report lists a $X contribution on [date] from a person using this name,” rather than “This person is a supporter of everything the candidate believes.” The first sentence reports a filed fact; the second makes an unsupported conclusion.

Keep the amount, date, recipient and reported donor fields in one layer. If you discuss a possible motive or political viewpoint, identify the independent evidence and state that the conclusion is interpretive.

Account for amendments and namesakes
Record the report version and check whether a later filing changed it. Verify an identity with multiple fields where lawfully available, but do not publish unnecessary personal details. A database match alone is not conclusive when names are shared.

If you live outside the United States
The steps above describe U.S. federal, state and local disclosure systems. Other countries may restrict political donations, publish different donor fields, use different thresholds or keep records private. Identify the election authority and governing law in your country before assuming that a U.S.-style searchable record exists.
A practical checklist
- Identify the office and election level.
- Search the official FEC tool for federal activity.
- Use the FEC directory to find the proper state or local office.
- Search name variants and narrow by committee, date, amount and location.
- Open the filing and inspect report period, transaction details and amendment status.
- Compare contextual fields before deciding that a name match is yours.
- Contact the filing committee about an incorrect federal entry.
- Keep original and amended report context in your notes.
- Use donor information only within applicable legal limits.
- Describe the filing as evidence of a reported transaction, not proof of a person’s complete politics.
