phpMyAdmin normally does not have a separate user database. It logs in to MySQL or MariaDB with a database account, so the username and password you need are usually the credentials for that server account. Find the account in your hosting panel, local development stack, or config.inc.php, then change it with an ALTER USER statement run by an administrator. Finally, update every application or configuration file that still contains the old password.
What your phpMyAdmin login actually is
The phpMyAdmin sign-in screen is generally a gateway to MySQL or MariaDB, not an independent account system. The username identifies a database account, and the password is the password assigned to that account on the database server.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteOn a local installation, the account is often root. Some development stacks initially create root with a blank password. On shared hosting, the account is more commonly a site-specific user created in cPanel, Plesk, or the host’s own dashboard. The exact username can include a hosting account prefix, so do not assume that a site named “example” uses a database user named simply example.
Changing a phpMyAdmin interface setting will not change the database password. The password must be changed on the MySQL or MariaDB server, and every client that uses that account must then be given the new value.

How phpMyAdmin decides whether to ask for credentials
The auth_type setting in phpMyAdmin’s config.inc.php controls the login method.
| Authentication type | What you see | Where the credentials come from |
|---|---|---|
cookie |
A login form asks for a MySQL or MariaDB username and password. | You enter the database account at each login; the username and password are not used from the server definition’s user and password fields. |
config |
phpMyAdmin logs in using values already defined in its configuration. | Look for $cfg['Servers'][$i]['user'] and $cfg['Servers'][$i]['password'] in config.inc.php. |
Cookie authentication is the usual default because it avoids storing a reusable database password in the phpMyAdmin configuration. If you see a login form, the values in config.inc.php may not be the credentials being requested. Conversely, with config authentication, an old password in the file can cause an immediate connection failure even when the database password has already been changed.

Shared or managed hosting
Open the hosting control panel’s database area. In cPanel this is normally the MySQL databases section; Plesk and other panels use comparable database pages. Identify the database user assigned to the site, including any provider-added prefix, and note the host or server to which it is assigned.
Changing the password through the panel is usually the safest option on a managed server. The panel can update the account and its permissions in the provider’s supported way, without requiring you to stop a production database service. Panel labels and exact screens vary by provider, so use the database user’s own “change password” action rather than a general hosting-account password control.
XAMPP, MAMP, WAMP, or another local stack
Check the stack’s database settings and the phpMyAdmin configuration shipped with it. Local packages commonly use root; some ship with an empty root password for development. Treat a blank password as an initial local setting, not as a safe permanent choice.
MAMP’s documentation, for example, requires changing the password in MySQL and then changing the corresponding phpMyAdmin configuration. Other stacks follow the same principle: the server account and the client configuration must agree.

Docker or a custom local installation
Look at the container definition, environment variables, compose file, startup script, or secret store that created the database account. A phpMyAdmin container may connect to a separate MySQL or MariaDB container, so changing a value in only the phpMyAdmin container does not change the database account. Record the database service name and the account’s host before making a change.
Inspect config.inc.php
Find the configuration file used by the phpMyAdmin instance. In the server definition, inspect:
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['auth_type']
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['user']
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['password']
The user and password entries identify the account only when auth_type is config. In cookie mode, those entries are not the credentials submitted through the login form. Do not paste a real password into a support forum or commit this file to source control.
Check which account is used by the application
A website can use a different account from the one you use interactively in phpMyAdmin. Inspect the application’s environment file, CMS configuration, framework secret store, or hosting database assignment. If you reset the wrong account, phpMyAdmin may work while the site fails—or the site may continue using the old password and fail after the reset.
Prepare for a password reset
Before changing anything, make a short inventory. This prevents the common situation in which the database password is successfully changed but several applications still try the old value.
- Write down the exact database username, including its host component if it is shown.
- Identify whether phpMyAdmin uses
cookieorconfigauthentication. - List websites, command-line tools, scheduled jobs, desktop clients, and other services that use the account.
- Confirm that you have an administrator account capable of changing the target account.
- Back up or securely record the relevant configuration before editing it.
- Choose a new, unique password and store it in your approved password manager or secret store.
Do not test a production password by repeatedly guessing it. Multiple failed attempts can trigger hosting security controls, and guessing cannot reveal the existing password because database systems store password verifiers rather than a readable password.

Reset the password in a hosting control panel
For a shared or managed server, use the database-user page supplied by the host whenever possible.
- Sign in to the hosting control panel.
- Open the database or MySQL/MariaDB management section.
- Select the database user assigned to the site, not merely the database name.
- Choose the panel’s change-password or reset-password action.
- Enter a new password that meets the panel’s requirements, then save it.
- Update the site’s environment file, CMS configuration, connection pool, and any scheduled jobs that use the account.
- Open phpMyAdmin and sign in with the database username and the new password if cookie authentication is enabled.
If the panel shows separate database and user lists, verify that the user remains assigned to the required database after the reset. A password change should not remove privileges, but checking the assignment catches accidental changes made on the wrong row.

Use SQL when you control the server or have an administrator account with permission to alter the target account. You can run the statement in phpMyAdmin’s SQL tab if you can still log in with another administrator, or in the MySQL/MariaDB command-line client.
The MySQL 5.7 form
The official MySQL 5.7 Windows guide shows this form:
ALTER USER 'root'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'MyNewPass';
Replace root, localhost, and MyNewPass with the account, host, and new password you actually need. The account is the combination of username and host; 'user'@'localhost' is a different account from 'user'@'127.0.0.1' or 'user'@'%' . Use the host shown by your server configuration rather than changing it casually.
Run the change as an administrator
- Connect with an account that still has permission to alter users.
- Confirm the target username and host before executing the statement.
- Run the
ALTER USERstatement and wait for the server’s success response. - Disconnect, then test the new credentials in a separate connection.
- Update phpMyAdmin and application configuration files before restarting dependent services.
The statement above is documented for MySQL 5.7. MySQL 8.x, MariaDB, and vendor builds can differ in account syntax, authentication plugins, password-policy rules, or administrative requirements. Confirm the syntax for the server version you are operating instead of blindly applying a command copied from a different version. An error from ALTER USER does not mean the password changed; read the complete server response and correct the account, host, privileges, or syntax.

If you cannot use phpMyAdmin to run the statement
A locked-out phpMyAdmin session cannot be used to reset the account that it cannot authenticate. Use a separate administrator connection, the server’s command-line client, or the hosting panel. If no privileged connection remains and you control the machine, use the documented emergency recovery method for your exact MySQL or MariaDB version and operating system.
Update every place that stores the old password
A successful SQL reset changes the server-side credential only. The following clients may continue sending the old password:
- phpMyAdmin in config mode: update
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['password']in the activeconfig.inc.php. Keep the username and host aligned with the account you changed. - Web applications: update environment variables, CMS configuration files, framework connection settings, and deployment secrets.
- Command-line scripts and cron jobs: replace the old value in protected configuration or secret storage rather than embedding it in a script.
- Connection pools and workers: restart processes that retain a database connection or cache credentials.
- Development containers: update compose variables, secret files, and initialization settings, then recreate or restart containers according to the stack’s procedure.
Do not change a live configuration file halfway through a deployment. Keep the new value protected, deploy it to every required client, and then restart only the services that need to reload it. Remove temporary copies of the old password from logs, shell history, tickets, and shared documents.
Emergency recovery when no administrator password works
The MySQL 5.7 Windows guide describes a fallback that stops the server and edits the user table directly. A common variant starts the server with skip-grant-tables, which disables normal password checks. These procedures are for a machine you control, not for a shared production server managed by someone else.
- Schedule downtime and restrict access to the host before disabling authentication.
- Back up the database and the server configuration first.
- Follow the recovery instructions for the exact server version and operating system; do not mix MySQL 5.7, MySQL 8.x, and MariaDB commands.
- Set a real password immediately after you regain administrative access.
- Stop the recovery instance and restart the server normally, without
skip-grant-tables. - Verify that ordinary authentication works before reopening network access.
While grant tables are skipped, anyone who can reach the server may be able to connect without the usual password checks. Leaving the server in that state is an authentication bypass, not a completed reset. If the machine is hosted by a provider, open a support request instead of attempting to stop or reconfigure a service you do not administer.
Fix common “access denied” errors
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
Access denied for user 'name'@'localhost' |
Wrong password, wrong account, or missing permission for the localhost host. |
Recheck the username, host, and password; make sure you changed the same account phpMyAdmin is using. |
| The site fails after the reset but phpMyAdmin works | An application still has the old password. | Update its environment or configuration, then restart its workers or connection pool. |
| phpMyAdmin immediately reports a connection error in config mode | config.inc.php still contains the old password. |
Update the active server definition’s user and password values and confirm the file is the one the web server loads. |
| The login form rejects credentials that work in another client | phpMyAdmin may target a different host, port, socket, or database server. | Compare its server connection settings with the working client and verify the account’s host component. |
| A blank password worked before but no longer does | The account was secured, recreated, or changed by the hosting panel or stack. | Find the current database user in the panel or configuration and set a deliberate password. |
| The SQL command returns a syntax or privilege error | Server-version differences or insufficient administrative rights. | Confirm the MySQL/MariaDB version and use an administrator account with permission to alter users. |
| phpMyAdmin shows a server-not-found or timeout message | The database service is stopped or phpMyAdmin points to the wrong endpoint. | Check the service status, hostname, port, socket, and container or local-stack networking. |
Username and password details that often cause confusion
The database name is not the username
A database is a container for tables; a user is an account granted access to one or more databases. Hosting panels often display them next to each other, which makes it easy to copy the database name into the phpMyAdmin username field. Select the user explicitly and verify its assignment.

The host is part of the account identity
MySQL and MariaDB authorize an account by both name and host. A password reset for 'app'@'localhost' does not automatically reset 'app'@'192.0.2.10'. This is why an apparently correct password can still produce an access-denied message when a connection is coming from a different host.
Changing the hosting account password is different
Your control-panel, FTP, SSH, and database passwords may be separate credentials. Reset only the database user assigned to phpMyAdmin unless you intentionally need to change another service as well.
Secure the account after recovery
- Use a long, unique password that is not reused for the hosting panel, operating system, or application administrator account.
- Prefer a separate, least-privilege database user for each application instead of using
rootfor a website. - Keep phpMyAdmin behind the access controls recommended by your host or local environment, and do not expose an administrative database interface unnecessarily to the public internet.
- Protect
config.inc.php, environment files, backups, and secret stores with appropriate file permissions. - Review application and database logs for failed connections after the change, but remove passwords from any diagnostic output.
- Document the account owner, host, and rotation date in a secure password-management system so the next reset does not depend on guesswork.
A concise recovery decision path
- See a login form? Treat the requested values as a MySQL/MariaDB username and password, then find that account in the hosting panel, local stack, or server documentation.
- See an automatic login failure? Check
auth_typeand theuser/passwordfields in the activeconfig.inc.php. - Have panel access? Change the database user’s password in the panel and update all clients.
- Have another administrator account? Run the version-appropriate
ALTER USERstatement and test a new connection. - Have no privileged account but control the machine? Use the exact emergency recovery procedure for that server version, keep the machine isolated, and restart normally as soon as the password is set.
- Do not control the server? Ask the host or administrator to reset the database user rather than attempting a grant-table bypass.
What to expect after a successful reset
In cookie mode, phpMyAdmin should accept the database username and new password on the next login. In config mode, it should connect automatically after the configuration file is updated. A site or script may require a restart because it cached the old connection credentials. If one client still fails while another succeeds, compare the client’s server endpoint and account host before changing the password again.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can phpMyAdmin show me the existing database password?
No. A working phpMyAdmin session can identify the account it uses, but it should not be able to reveal the existing password in readable form. Set a new password through the hosting panel or an administrator connection instead.
Do I need to change the password if I only forgot the username?
Not necessarily. First identify the database user in the hosting panel, local-stack settings, or the active config.inc.php. Change the password only if it is also unknown or you want to rotate it.
Why does resetting root not fix my website?
The website may use a separate application account, or it may connect as a different host-qualified account. Check the application’s connection settings and reset the exact username-and-host combination it uses.
