Valve says Steam Frame CAD files and electrical-interface information are available for non-commercial use. Start with Valve’s Steam Hardware announcement, “Steam Frame updates: Reservation timing, software updates, and more,” and use its current “View the files here” link. Because the destination can change, do not rely on an unverified repository address. Once you obtain the files, use CAD software that imports STEP to inspect the geometry or develop an accessory; a 3D printer is optional, and commercial use requires following Valve’s separate instructions.

Where can I download the Steam Frame CAD files?

The reliable starting point is Valve’s official Steam Hardware announcement titled Steam Frame updates: Reservation timing, software updates, and more, published October 9, 2026. In its Steam Frame CAD section, Valve says the files are available and provides a “View the files here” link. Open that announcement from Valve’s current Steam news or hardware pages, then follow the link shown there.

This approach matters because the announcement’s linked destination may change. The available announcement record does not establish a permanent repository path, archive name, or hosting service. Do not guess a URL from a search result, an old forum post, or a screenshot. Check that the page you reach is the destination linked from Valve’s announcement and read any accompanying README or license text before using a file.

What Valve has officially released

Valve’s wording is specific: “Steam Frame CAD files and electrical interface information are now available for non-commercial use.” The release therefore covers design information for the headset and its interfaces, not necessarily every production document or manufacturing drawing. The announcement does not establish that every file is print-ready, that STL exports are included, or that a particular CAD application is required.

What secondary reporting says is included

Hackaday reports that the release includes STEP models of the headset core module, head strap, and controllers. Treat those component names as secondary reporting until you inspect Valve’s live destination and confirm the actual filenames and formats. The repository or archive may contain additional documentation, revisions, or electrical-interface material that is not described in the report.

What you need before opening a file

You can inspect a STEP model without fabricating a physical part. Prepare the following:

  • A downloaded copy of the files from Valve’s linked destination.
  • CAD software with STEP import support. The sources do not identify a preferred application.
  • Enough storage for the archive and any converted working files.
  • A measurement or unit-checking method, such as the CAD program’s properties panel or a known reference dimension, so you can detect an import-scale problem.
  • A separate project folder for the original files, imported models, and your edits.

A 3D printer is not a prerequisite. The release concerns CAD and electrical-interface information; the available evidence does not show that STL files are supplied or that Valve expects users to print anything.

How to download the files safely

  1. Open Valve’s Steam Hardware announcement. Use the exact title Steam Frame updates: Reservation timing, software updates, and more and verify the October 9, 2026 publication date.
  2. Locate the Steam Frame CAD section. Look for the statement about CAD files and electrical-interface information.
  3. Select “View the files here.” Follow the live link rather than typing a repository address manually.
  4. Read the destination’s documentation first. Note the listed components, file formats, revision identifiers, units, and any README or license terms.
  5. Download the original archive or files. Keep an untouched copy. Work on duplicates so that you can return to the supplied geometry if an import or conversion goes wrong.
  6. Record the revision. Save the download date and any version or commit identifier displayed by the destination. This lets you identify which geometry your accessory was designed around if Valve updates the files.

If the link no longer works

Return to Valve’s current announcement rather than using an unverified mirror. A moved or replaced destination is a reason to re-check the announcement and its terms, not to assume that a similarly named archive is official. If the announcement’s link is temporarily unavailable, you can still read the policy statement, but you do not yet have a verified download source.

How do I open Steam Frame STEP files?

STEP (also written STP) is a portable CAD exchange format intended for solid and assembly geometry. The practical workflow below follows from the reported file format; it is not a Valve-tested procedure for a particular application.

  1. Start a new CAD project. Keep the project in a separate directory from the original download.
  2. Use the import command. In your CAD application, choose its file-open or import function and select the .step or .stp file. Do not rename a file extension to force it into a different format.
  3. Accept or review import options. If the program asks whether to import an assembly as separate components, preserve the assembly structure when you need to study how parts relate to one another.
  4. Check units immediately. STEP geometry can be interpreted with a unit setting supplied by the file or selected by the application. Inspect a known dimension or the model’s reported bounding box. If the result is 25.4 times too large or too small, a millimetre-versus-inch interpretation is a likely cause; correct the unit setting or re-import rather than scaling blindly.
  5. Check orientation and origin. Confirm which direction is forward, upward, and toward the wearer. An imported model can be geometrically correct while being oriented differently from your accessory design.
  6. Confirm that expected components are present. Look for the core module, head strap, or controller model described in the file documentation. Suppressed, hidden, or separate bodies may need to be made visible in the model tree.
  7. Inspect geometry health. Use the application’s body, face, and edge diagnostics. Gaps, self-intersections, or failed solids can prevent downstream edits even when the model displays correctly.
  8. Save a native project copy. Preserve the imported STEP file unchanged and save your editable version in the CAD program’s native format.

Why the unit and orientation checks matter

A STEP import that looks plausible can still be unusable for an accessory. A scale error changes every clearance, while a reversed orientation can put a mount, cable path, or opening on the wrong side. Treat the first import as inspection. Do not describe a dimension as a guaranteed fit until you have confirmed the file revision, units, orientation, and the physical hardware it represents.

How can I use the models to design an accessory?

The files are most useful as reference geometry for planning an accessory around the Steam Frame. Valve’s Steam Frame product information identifies a user-accessible expansion port and compatible accessories, which can help you decide where an accessory might interface. That product page does not replace the CAD files and does not verify the dimensions or contents of an individual model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inspection-only projects

For an inspection project, isolate the body or assembly you need, measure clearances, and create section views. Avoid modifying the supplied geometry. This preserves a trustworthy reference while you determine whether a strap attachment, enclosure, mount, or cable route is feasible.

Reference-driven accessory design

  1. Choose the interface. Decide whether your concept attaches to the head strap, surrounds the core module, fits a controller, or uses an expansion-port area.
  2. Create a reference component. Place the imported model in a locked or reference layer. Build new sketches and solids in separate bodies.
  3. Define clearance deliberately. Add space for assembly, movement, ventilation, buttons, connectors, and manufacturing tolerances. The source files show geometry; they do not tell you what clearance your chosen fabrication process requires.
  4. Plan assembly. Identify how a user would install and remove the accessory without forcing the headset, strap, controller, or connector.
  5. Check interference. Run the CAD program’s interference or collision analysis between your design and the reference bodies.
  6. Review the electrical interface separately. If your design uses the expansion port or another electrical connection, consult the interface documentation supplied with Valve’s release. Mechanical fit alone does not establish electrical compatibility, power limits, signaling, or safety.
  7. Prototype conservatively. Test a non-electrical mock-up first if possible. Confirm fit on the actual hardware before committing to a final material or production method.

What the files do not guarantee

  • They do not guarantee that an accessory designed against one revision fits every future Steam Frame revision.
  • They do not establish that the model includes hidden parts, internal tolerances, soft materials, fasteners, or production deviations.
  • They do not establish that an electrical design is safe merely because a connector appears in the geometry.
  • They do not establish Valve approval, endorsement, or compatibility for a third-party accessory.

Do I need to 3D-print anything?

No. You can use the files entirely on-screen for measurement, visualization, interference checks, or a manufacturing drawing. The available release information does not say that STL exports are included, and it does not require a 3D printer.

If you decide to make a physical prototype

First confirm whether the destination includes a mesh export or whether your CAD software can create one from the accessory body. A STEP file is not automatically a printer-ready STL. You may need to repair the solid, choose a tessellation tolerance, orient the part, add supports, and verify wall thickness for the fabrication method you select.

Use a printed prototype to validate ergonomics and fit, not to infer that the final production material, strength, heat resistance, or electrical insulation is adequate. The available sources do not recommend a printer, filament, resin, or fabrication service.

Can I use Steam Frame CAD files to make accessories?

For non-commercial work, Valve’s announcement expressly makes the CAD and electrical-interface information available. That supports personal study, experimentation, and accessory development within the scope of the terms shown at Valve’s linked destination.

Questions to resolve with Valve

  • Whether the intended activity is considered commercial.
  • Whether you may modify, publish, or redistribute derivative CAD files.
  • Whether a product may use Steam Frame or Valve marks in its name or marketing.
  • Whether electrical-interface details impose additional technical or safety conditions.
  • Whether permission applies only to a specific revision or also to later files.

Choosing a workflow by goal

Goal Format or capability needed Physical fabrication required? Use-status question
Inspect geometry STEP import support No Confirm the non-commercial terms
Design a personal accessory STEP import, measurement, assembly and interference tools No; a prototype is optional Keep the project within non-commercial use unless Valve approves otherwise
Prototype a mechanical part STEP import plus a method to export or manufacture the finished design Yes, if you choose a physical prototype Check whether the activity has a commercial purpose
Sell an accessory STEP import and a production workflow Usually, but the source does not mandate a method Follow Valve’s commercial-use instructions and contact Valve
Develop an electrical accessory STEP import plus the supplied electrical-interface documentation Not necessarily Mechanical geometry does not grant electrical or commercial permission

Troubleshooting common problems

The download page is missing or looks unofficial

Go back to Valve’s announcement and use its current “View the files here” link. Compare the destination with the link shown there. Do not substitute a mirror or a similarly named repository without confirmation.

The CAD program rejects the file

Check the extension and download integrity, then try the program’s STEP import command rather than a mesh-import command. If the file is an assembly, look for separate component files or an import option that preserves assemblies. The sources do not identify a required application, so a failure in one program does not prove that the file is invalid.

The model is the wrong size

Stop before designing around it. Re-import with the correct unit interpretation, verify a known dimension, and record the setting in your project notes. Do not use an arbitrary scale factor unless you have established the intended units.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Only part of the model appears

Expand the model tree, unhide bodies, and check whether the download separates an assembly into multiple files. Re-read the destination’s README for component names and revision notes. Secondary reporting names the core module, head strap, and controllers, but only the live Valve destination can confirm what your download contains.

The accessory fits the CAD model but not the hardware

Check that you used the correct revision, orientation, and units. Then account for soft straps, fasteners, protective skins, manufacturing tolerances, and user-adjustable positions that may not be represented in the model. Validate against the physical device before finalizing the design.

An electrical prototype does not work

Do not infer pinout, voltage, current, protocol, or protection requirements from mechanical geometry. Consult Valve’s electrical-interface information, verify every connection independently, and stop testing if the design could damage the headset, controller, or user.

What to verify before publishing or manufacturing a design

  • You downloaded the files through the current link in Valve’s official announcement.
  • You saved the archive and documented its revision or download date.
  • You confirmed the exact file formats and included components.
  • You checked units, orientation, assembly structure, and geometry health.
  • You separated Valve’s reference bodies from your original design bodies.
  • You tested clearances and interference against the intended hardware revision.
  • You read the current README, license, and electrical-interface notes.
  • You determined whether the activity is non-commercial or requires Valve’s commercial-use process.
  • You avoided implying Valve endorsement or promising compatibility beyond what you tested.

The practical answer

Find the files through Valve’s October 9, 2026 Steam Hardware announcement and its live “View the files here” link. Expect STEP models to be the reported starting point for the core module, head strap, and controllers, but confirm the contents yourself at the linked destination. Open the files in STEP-capable CAD software, verify units and orientation, and use the imported geometry as a reference for inspection or accessory design. Printing is optional. If money, sales, or a business project is involved, follow Valve’s commercial-use instructions and contact Valve instead of assuming the non-commercial release permits it.
