In the United States, start with the National Hurricane Center at hurricanes.gov for the storm-wide advisory, then check your local National Weather Service office at weather.gov for area-specific hazards and instructions. Read the written watch or warning area—not only the forecast cone—and follow any evacuation order from local officials.

The fastest way to check whether an alert covers you

  1. Open the National Hurricane Center (NHC). Go to hurricanes.gov and select the active Atlantic or eastern North Pacific storm. The NHC is the National Weather Service (NWS) route for official tropical-cyclone advisories in those basins.
  2. Read the latest Tropical Cyclone Public Advisory. The text identifies every current coastal watch and warning, the storm’s position, maximum sustained wind, movement, and the hazards being forecast.
  3. Match your location to the named area. Check the communities, counties, islands, coastal segments, or other geographic boundaries written in the advisory and shown on its associated map. A location is covered when it falls inside the stated watch or warning area, not merely because it appears near the track line.
  4. Open your local Weather Forecast Office (WFO). At weather.gov, enter your address or choose the office serving your area. Read its Hurricane Local Statement and any threat or impact graphics for local wind, storm surge, flooding rain, tornado, and preparedness information.
  5. Follow emergency-management directions. A watch or warning does not replace an evacuation order. Leave immediately when local officials direct you to evacuate, using their designated routes and shelters.
  6. Check again as the storm changes. For Atlantic and eastern North Pacific storms, NWS advisories are issued at least every six hours and every three hours when coastal tropical-storm or hurricane watches or warnings are in effect.

These steps answer “Is there a hurricane warning for my area?” with the issuing agency’s current information rather than a third-party map or social-media post.

Which official source does what?

Source or channel What it provides When to use it
National Hurricane Center Storm-wide public advisories, current watches and warnings, forecast track, storm position, wind, motion, and broad hazard descriptions. Begin here for an Atlantic or eastern North Pacific tropical cyclone.
Local NWS Weather Forecast Office at weather.gov Hurricane Local Statements, local timing, expected effects, preparedness information, and threat or impact graphics. Translate the storm forecast into risks for your county, city, or coastal area.
Local emergency-management officials Evacuation zones, orders, routes, shelters, re-entry rules, and other protective actions. Use whenever an order or local operational instruction is issued.
NOAA Weather Radio and other public alert channels Repeated official forecasts and warnings through broadcast or dedicated receivers. Maintain a second way to receive updates, especially if internet or cellular service is unreliable.
Local broadcast media and phone alerts Redistribution of official warnings and local instructions through television, radio, or configured mobile alerts. Use as additional delivery paths; verify important details against NHC, your WFO, or officials.

NWS and NHC recommend more than one alert channel. No single website or device guarantees reception during a power, network, or equipment failure. Compare channels by what matters in your situation: the NHC gives the broad storm picture, a WFO gives local interpretation, emergency managers give operational orders, and radio or phone systems may continue working when one internet connection does not.

What a hurricane watch or warning means

The words watch and warning describe both the likelihood of conditions and the usual preparation window. They do not promise that every location will receive exactly that amount of lead time.

Product Wind threshold or hazard Typical timing in the defined area What you should do
Hurricane watch Hurricane conditions, including sustained winds of at least 74 mph, are possible. Generally within 48 hours. Complete preparations while travel and outdoor work are still safe. Monitor later advisories and local instructions.
Hurricane warning Hurricane conditions, including sustained winds of at least 74 mph, are expected. Generally within 36 hours. Finish preparations immediately. Evacuate if local officials order you to do so.
Tropical storm watch Sustained winds of 39–73 mph are possible. Generally within 48 hours. Prepare for damaging wind and related hazards even though hurricane-force wind is not the defined threshold.
Tropical storm warning Sustained winds of 39–73 mph are expected. Generally within 36 hours. Complete protective actions and follow local instructions.
Storm surge watch Life-threatening inundation from rising water moving inland from the shoreline is possible. Generally within 48 hours. Check evacuation information for your zone; surge can make roads unsafe before the storm’s strongest winds arrive.
Storm surge warning Life-threatening coastal inundation is expected. Generally within 36 hours. Follow evacuation orders and move to the location specified by local officials.

A hurricane warning is not required for every dangerous impact. Flooding rain, tornadoes, storm surge, and strong tropical-storm winds can threaten an area under a different product—or outside the hurricane’s forecast track. A watch means you still have a preparation window, while a warning means the expected conditions are close enough that protective actions should be completed. Because forecasts can change quickly, never wait for a warning if local officials have already ordered evacuation.

How to read the NHC advisory and map

Start with the advisory timestamp

Use the newest product shown on the storm page. Note its issue time and the next scheduled advisory, then refresh the page when the storm is active. Older screenshots or forwarded messages may no longer show the current watch or warning boundaries. The routine schedule is a minimum, not a promise that nothing will change between products; significant developments can prompt additional information.

Read the written watch and warning section

The public advisory lists the areas under each product. Read the full geographic description rather than inferring coverage from a nearby city, a colored line, or a storm category. If your county, island, coastline, or community is named, treat that text as the authoritative coverage information for the product. If boundaries are described by coastal points or segments, compare those terms with your local map instead of assuming an entire state or region is included.

Use the graphic for orientation, not as a complete hazard boundary

The NWS graphic displays the storm position, forecast track, and watch or warning areas. The forecast “cone” represents the probable path of the storm’s center; it is not a boundary containing every possible effect. Tropical-storm-force winds, rain, tornadoes, and coastal flooding can extend hundreds of miles from the center and can occur outside the cone. A location outside the shaded cone is not automatically safe, and a location inside it is not guaranteed to experience the center’s strongest conditions.

Look for hazards beyond wind

Read the advisory’s hazard discussion and then open your WFO’s local statement. A location may face storm surge, inland flooding rain, or tornadoes even if the local wind forecast does not meet the hurricane-warning threshold. Treat each hazard separately: a surge warning concerns rising coastal water, while a wind warning concerns sustained wind; one product does not cancel the other.

How to find your local Weather Forecast Office information

  1. Go to weather.gov.
  2. Enter your city, ZIP code, or full address in the location search.
  3. Open the forecast page for your point and identify the NWS Weather Forecast Office serving it.
  4. Follow the office’s links for a Hurricane Local Statement, tropical information, or threat and impact graphics when a storm is affecting the area.
  5. Read the local timing and expected effects alongside the NHC watch or warning. The WFO material is intended to explain what the regional forecast means for people in its service area.

Local statements commonly summarize expected wind, storm surge, flooding rain, tornado potential, preparedness actions, and other impacts. They may explain when conditions are expected to begin, which roads or low-lying areas are vulnerable, and what residents should do to prepare. They do not replace evacuation instructions issued by your city, county, tribal, or state emergency-management authority. Keep both pages open: the NHC product establishes the storm-wide status, while the WFO provides the local context.

Choose more than one way to receive updates

Web pages are useful when you can check them, but an approaching hurricane can interrupt power, broadband, or mobile service. Set up complementary channels before conditions deteriorate.

  • Internet: Bookmark hurricanes.gov and weather.gov, and refresh the official pages during active advisories.
  • Wireless emergency and local phone alerts: Enable government and emergency-management notifications supported by your phone and locality.
  • Broadcast media: Keep access to a battery-powered or vehicle radio and follow local television or radio coverage carrying official information.
  • NOAA Weather Radio: NWS identifies it as a public source for weather warnings. A receiver with Specific Area Message Encoding (SAME) can be configured for selected locations; it supplements, rather than replaces, local alerts and instructions.
  • People and plans: Make sure household members know where the official pages, shelters, contacts, medications, and evacuation information are kept if one person loses connectivity.

Use a second channel to avoid missing an update, but confirm the product name, affected area, issue time, and instructions through the official source whenever possible. A dedicated receiver can be useful in a power outage when it has an appropriate power source, but it does not provide a personal evacuation decision. Treat it as another route to the same official information.

What to do when the alert does not seem to match your location

Your town is near, but not inside, the named area

Do not treat proximity as coverage. Check the exact county, coastal segment, island, or zone in the written advisory and consult your WFO’s local impacts. A place outside a hurricane warning can still receive dangerous rain, tornadoes, surge, or tropical-storm winds. Ask your local emergency-management office whether your address lies in an evacuation zone, because those zones do not necessarily match the NHC product boundary.

The map looks different from a social-media post

Use the latest NHC advisory and its associated graphic. Products change as new observations and forecasts arrive; an older image may show a watch that has been expanded, narrowed, upgraded, or cancelled. Check the time stamp before sharing any screenshot, and avoid relying on an unlabeled map whose source or issue time is unclear.

You see a warning but no evacuation order

Warnings describe expected weather conditions. Evacuation decisions are made by local officials using factors such as surge risk, roads, shelters, and local geography. Continue monitoring emergency-management channels and leave immediately if ordered. Conversely, officials can order evacuation before a hurricane warning is posted if local conditions and forecasts justify it.

You cannot load the websites

Try the alternate official channel you prepared: NOAA Weather Radio, local broadcast radio or television, wireless emergency alerts, or emergency-management notifications. If power is out, conserve phone battery, use a vehicle radio if safe, and follow any instructions already issued by local authorities. Do not drive through flooded roads to search for a signal or information.

The advisory schedule seems longer than the threat timeline

The six-hour minimum—and three-hour schedule when coastal tropical-storm or hurricane watches or warnings are active—applies to Atlantic and eastern North Pacific NWS advisories. Special advisories can be issued when significant changes occur. Treat the posted product time and local instructions as controlling rather than assuming a storm will wait for the next routine update. The typical 48-hour watch and 36-hour warning windows are definitions, not guaranteed preparation time for every address.

Important limits of the forecast cone

  • The cone forecasts the likely track of the storm’s center, not the full footprint of wind, rain, surge, or tornadoes.
  • Hazardous effects can reach hundreds of miles from the center.
  • A track shift can move a location into or out of a watch or warning, so check each new advisory.
  • Local impact graphics and statements are better for judging threats to a particular area than the cone alone.
  • The absence of a colored watch or warning area does not mean that ordinary flooding, tornado, or wind products cannot be issued for your location.

For decisions about leaving, sheltering, or protecting property, combine the NHC product with your WFO’s local hazards and the instructions from emergency officials. The cone is a planning aid, not a guarantee of either safety or damage.

What these U.S. products mean outside the United States

The procedures above describe U.S. National Weather Service products, with the NHC route applying to Atlantic and eastern North Pacific storms. If you live elsewhere, use your country’s national meteorological service and local emergency-management authority. Alert names, thresholds, maps, issuing offices, and delivery systems can differ, so do not assume that a U.S. hurricane watch or warning definition applies in another country. Travelers should check both the destination’s meteorological service and local civil-protection instructions.

A compact checklist for every advisory update

  • Record the advisory’s issue time.
  • Read the written watch and warning areas.
  • Check whether your exact location is named or mapped inside a product.
  • Review wind, surge, rain, flooding, and tornado hazards—not just the storm category.
  • Open your local WFO’s Hurricane Local Statement and impact graphics.
  • Check local emergency-management messages and evacuation orders.
  • Refresh through the next advisory, using a backup alert channel if connectivity fails.

The reliable workflow is therefore two-layered: NHC information tells you what the storm is doing and which broad areas are covered; your local WFO and emergency officials explain what that means where you live and what action is required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a hurricane warning for my area?

Check the latest Tropical Cyclone Public Advisory at hurricanes.gov and read the written warning area. Then enter your address at weather.gov to find your local WFO statement and consult local emergency-management messages.

How do I check hurricane alerts for my location?

Use the NHC storm page for Atlantic or eastern North Pacific systems, match your county, island, coastline, or community to the named watch or warning area, and review your WFO’s local impact graphics. Keep NOAA Weather Radio, broadcast media, or phone alerts available as backup channels.

What is the difference between a hurricane watch and a warning?

A hurricane watch means hurricane conditions, including sustained winds of at least 74 mph, are possible generally within 48 hours. A hurricane warning means those conditions are expected generally within 36 hours. The timing is typical, not guaranteed; complete preparations and follow local orders.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does being outside the forecast cone mean I am safe?

No. The cone shows the probable path of the storm’s center, not every hazard. Wind, rain, tornadoes, and storm surge can extend hundreds of miles beyond it. Read the advisory text and your local WFO products.

Can I rely on a hurricane category to decide whether to evacuate?

No. Categories describe wind intensity and do not capture all hazards. Storm surge, flooding rain, tornadoes, and tropical-storm-force winds may require action even without a local hurricane warning. Follow emergency officials’ instructions.

How often are official hurricane advisories updated?

For Atlantic and eastern North Pacific storms, NWS advisories are issued at least every six hours and every three hours when coastal tropical-storm or hurricane watches or warnings are active. Special advisories may appear after significant changes, so use the newest time-stamped product.

What if my local officials order evacuation before a hurricane warning?

Leave when ordered. Local officials consider evacuation zones, surge, roads, shelters, and local geography; their instruction does not have to wait for an NHC hurricane warning. Use designated routes and shelters and monitor subsequent updates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I use if the internet or phone service fails?

Use a prepared alternate such as NOAA Weather Radio, a battery-powered or vehicle radio, local television, or emergency-management notifications. A SAME-capable NOAA Weather Radio can target selected locations, but it supplements and does not replace local instructions.

The Bottom Line

For U.S. Atlantic and eastern North Pacific storms, check hurricanes.gov first, read the named watch or warning area and issue time, then use weather.gov and your local WFO for location-specific hazards. The cone is not a complete impact boundary, and a watch or warning never replaces an evacuation order. Keep more than one official alert channel available and follow local officials immediately.
