A repeatable six-step check for any announcement
Apply the same sequence whether you are checking a release-date rumor, a trailer, a platform claim or a supposed statement from Rockstar.
- Open the original source. Follow the link to the Rockstar page or profile. If the claim exists only as a cropped screenshot, screen recording, repost or unattributed message, label it unverified.
- Read the exact wording. Distinguish “Rockstar announced” from “a source claims” or “fans expect.” Small changes in wording can turn a confirmed fact into speculation. Copy the sentence as written before interpreting it.
- Record the date and time context. Newswire entries are dated. Compare the post date with the date shown in the circulating claim. An old announcement may have been accurate when published but no longer describe the current schedule.

Release dates are a common source of misleading screenshots because an earlier official date can continue circulating after Rockstar changes it. Keep the sequence explicit:

What Rockstar confirmed
On September 19, 2022, Rockstar confirmed that an unauthorized party accessed and downloaded confidential information, including early development footage for the next Grand Theft Auto. TechCrunch reported Rockstar’s statement as: “We recently suffered a network intrusion in which an unauthorized third party illegally accessed and downloaded confidential information from our systems, including early development footage for the next Grand Theft Auto.”
That statement establishes that footage connected with that specific intrusion was genuine stolen material. It does not turn every later file, account or video into an authenticated leak.
Why early footage is a limited reference
Rockstar described the material as early development footage. Early builds can contain temporary art, placeholder dialogue, unfinished mechanics, debug elements or scenes that never ship. Even when a clip is genuinely from that incident, it should not be used as evidence of the finished game’s graphics, story, features or release schedule.
Do not extend the confirmation to later rumors

Use official media to check context, not just appearance

Check the official site, the GTA VI Newswire listing and social profiles reached from the site again. If no matching source appears, say that Rockstar has not confirmed the claim through the channels checked. Build a verification record you can revisit
For a claim that may be discussed repeatedly, keep a short record rather than relying on memory. Save the exact Rockstar URL, the post date, the wording that matters and the date you checked it.
