Start at Vote.gov or the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC) state directory, then follow the link to your state or local election office. Those election officials control the details that apply to you: registration status, deadlines, polling place, hours, ballot choices, identification rules, mail-ballot instructions and tracking. Federal portals are reliable starting points, but the linked state or local source is the final authority for a particular voter and election.
Use the workflow below to check each detail against the current election. Do not rely on a search snippet, old bookmark, forwarded message or another state’s calendar.
Which official election sources should you use?
Election information is organized by jurisdiction. A federal site can direct you to the right office, but it cannot replace the state, county, parish, city or other election authority responsible for your address. The EAC states: “The best sources of this information are your state and local election offices, which can provide details on where to vote, polling place hours, what is on your ballot, and more.”

Use Vote.gov to select your state or territory. It routes voters to registration, registration-update and status-check resources maintained for that jurisdiction. Begin there when you are unsure which election agency serves your address or when you need the official registration pathway.

The EAC “Register and Vote in Your State” directory
The EAC directory links to state election offices, local election offices and voter tools. It is useful for locating the correct government page and for finding resources about registration, in-person voting, early voting, absentee or mail voting and ballot tracking. The EAC cautions that its summaries must be checked against the linked government sources because deadlines and instructions can change.
State and local election offices
The office linked for your jurisdiction supplies the controlling information for the upcoming election. It can confirm whether your registration record is current, identify your assigned polling place, give its hours, explain ballot-return procedures and answer questions that an online summary cannot resolve. If a federal summary and the linked local page appear to conflict, use the local election office and contact it for clarification.

How to check your voter registration
Registration records must match the voter’s legal name and residential address. A move, name change or other change can require an update even when you have voted before.
- Open the official state resource. Select your state or territory through Vote.gov or the EAC directory, then choose the registration-status or voter-lookup tool provided by the government election office.
- Enter the requested identifying information. Use the legal name and residential address associated with the registration. Follow the site’s exact format for dates, identification numbers or county selection.
- Compare the record with your current situation. Check the name, address, political-party field if the jurisdiction uses one, and any status or eligibility message. A record that shows an old address or name is not a complete confirmation for the upcoming election.
- Submit any required update. If you moved or changed your name, use the same official state resource to update the registration. Read the jurisdiction’s instructions for documents, signatures, online submission and the deadline; requirements differ by state and territory.
- Contact the election office if the result is missing or ambiguous. Keep the office’s official contact information from the government page. Ask what action is required and whether an update will apply to the election you intend to vote in.
Do not infer registration status from a past voter card, a campaign database, a social-media post or a result from another state. Only the relevant election office can confirm the record used for your address.

How to verify the registration deadline for this election
There is no single national registration deadline. Some jurisdictions permit registration on Election Day, while others close registration earlier. Deadlines can also differ for online applications, mailed forms, in-person registration and updates after a move or name change.
- Identify the exact election: include the election date and, if applicable, the primary, runoff, special election or local contest.
- Open your state or territory’s official election page through Vote.gov or the EAC directory.
- Locate the deadline that matches your action: registering for the first time, updating an address or name, requesting a mail ballot, returning a ballot or changing a voting method.
- Check whether the page specifies a submission time, postmark rule, business-day cutoff or separate deadline for online and paper applications.
- Save the page or note the date only after confirming that it applies to the current election. If wording is unclear, call the election office before the deadline.
Never apply one state’s deadline to another state, and do not treat a generic national calendar as confirmation. A deadline is useful only when its jurisdiction, election and submission method match your situation.
How to find your polling place and hours
Your assigned polling place is based on your residential address and may change between elections. A location used previously is not automatically valid for the next election.

- Use the polling-place lookup on the official state or local election website, or contact the election office listed there.
- Enter the residential address used for your registration, including apartment or unit information when requested.
- Record the complete location address, any room or entrance directions, and the opening and closing hours shown for the current election.
- Check the result again close to Election Day. Changes can occur between elections, and a saved map result or old notice may be out of date.
- If the lookup returns no location or an unexpected one, contact the election office. Ask the official to confirm both the assignment and the hours.
Do not choose a polling place solely because it is nearby. Use the assigned location or follow the jurisdiction’s official instructions for an alternative voting site.

How to verify early, in-person, mail and absentee voting
Voting methods are jurisdiction- and election-specific. “Early,” “absentee” and “mail” can describe different procedures, and availability, request deadlines, return methods, identification rules and signature requirements vary. Use the relevant state or local page for every step.

Requesting a mail or absentee ballot
Open the official state or local election page and verify that you are eligible for the method in the current election. Follow the stated application route, which may be online, by mail or in person. Confirm the address where the ballot will be delivered and the exact request deadline. A request deadline is not necessarily the same as the ballot-return deadline.
Completing and returning the ballot
Follow every instruction printed with the ballot and on the election office’s website. Check whether the jurisdiction requires a signature, witness, identification information, secrecy envelope or another certification. Verify whether return is permitted by mail, drop box, in-person delivery or an authorized representative, and confirm the final receipt or postmark rule. Do not assume that a commercial carrier, ordinary mailbox or drop box is accepted unless the official instructions say so.

Tracking a returned ballot
If the election office provides a tracking tool, use the enrollment or tracking-number process described on its official page. Read the status wording carefully: a status can show receipt, processing or another stage without answering every question about counting. If a status is missing or appears inconsistent with the delivery method, contact the election office using its official contact details.

What military and overseas voters should do
Vote.gov identifies the Federal Post Card Application (FPCA) as a way for eligible U.S. military and overseas voters to register and request an absentee ballot. Eligibility, submission methods and deadlines still depend on the voter’s jurisdiction and election.
- Use the Federal Voting Assistance Program and the applicable state or local election office to obtain current instructions.
- Confirm whether you need the FPCA for both registration and the ballot request, or for an update to an existing record.
- Check the delivery and return options available to your location, including any electronic-delivery rules and final return deadline.
- Keep copies of submitted forms and note any tracking or confirmation information supplied by the election office.
- Contact the election office if delivery timing, eligibility or a missing ballot is uncertain; overseas mail schedules can make an early inquiry important.
What to do if your eligibility or registration is questioned at the polls
Ask an election official what procedure applies to your situation. Do not rely on advice from a bystander, campaign worker or an old message.
- Explain that you want to vote and ask the official to check the registration record and address information.
- Ask whether an address, name or identification issue can be corrected at the polling place or requires follow-up with the election office.
- If the official says you cannot use the regular ballot, ask whether a provisional ballot is available and what information you must provide for it to count.
- Follow the jurisdiction’s instructions for submitting additional information after Election Day. Requirements and deadlines vary.
- Keep any receipt, notice or reference number given to you, and use the election office’s official contact channel for follow-up.
The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s voter guide describes provisional ballots as an option in some circumstances. A provisional ballot is not a universal guarantee that every vote will be counted; the state may require additional information and applies its own review rules.

How to tell whether an election-information page is official and current
Check the path to the page
Reach the information from Vote.gov, the EAC, USAGov or a state or local government election office. A page linked from one of these portals is easier to authenticate than a stand-alone result with no clear government ownership.

Confirm the jurisdiction
Make sure the page applies to your state, county, parish, city, district or territory. A legitimate government page can still be the wrong page for your address.
Confirm the election and date
Look for the current election name or date and instructions that match the action you need. Registration, polling-place and ballot-return pages may each have different dates.
Look for voter-specific details
A useful page should address the information you need: registration status, residential address, assigned location, hours, deadline, ballot request, return method or tracking. General explanations are not confirmation of an individual record.

If a directory summary, search result or saved page conflicts with the linked state or local source, rely on the relevant election office and ask it to clarify. The EAC specifically advises voters to verify its state summaries through linked state and local sources.
Do not treat search results as evidence
Search snippets can be truncated or old. Forwarded messages and social posts can omit a jurisdiction, election date or exception. Open the government page itself and check the details there.
Common verification problems and the right next step

A practical pre-election verification checklist
- Identify the exact election and jurisdiction for your residential address.
- Check the registration record for your legal name and current address.
- Complete any required registration or update before the applicable state deadline.
- Confirm the assigned polling place and current hours shortly before Election Day.
- Decide whether in-person, early, mail or absentee voting is available and suitable for you.
- If using a mail or absentee ballot, verify eligibility, request deadline, delivery address, completion rules and return deadline separately.
- Confirm whether ballot tracking is offered and how to use it.
- Military and overseas voters should review FPCA and Federal Voting Assistance Program instructions with their election office.
- Save the official election office’s contact information in case an online result is missing or contradictory.
What this guide cannot determine for you
Without your state or territory, county or locality, election date and voter circumstances, no one can responsibly provide your exact registration deadline, polling place, identification requirement, mail-ballot deadline or eligibility determination. Those details are not national constants. Use this guide to reach the correct government authority, then verify the individual instructions for the election you will vote in.
