Use the emergency or fire-service authority for the state or territory where the fire is occurring. Open its live incident map or listing, read the warning’s action statement, and follow evacuation directions immediately. The Australian Warning System supplies nationally consistent labels—Advice, Watch and Act, and Emergency Warning—but the local authority publishes the incident-specific detail. Call Triple Zero (000) when life is at risk, and do not wait for an alert if you can see danger or believe you are threatened.
What to do first when a bushfire threatens
Start with the jurisdiction where the fire is located, not a generic search result or an old social-media post. State and territory emergency or fire authorities remain responsible for issuing live bushfire warnings. A national information page can explain the warning system, but it cannot replace the local incident map, road information, evacuation centre status or action statement.
- Identify the fire’s jurisdiction. Confirm the state or territory in which you, your family or the threatened property are located.
- Open that authority’s official warning channel. Use its current website, incident map, listing, app or alert page. Safe Work Australia’s emergency-authority source list covers the ACT, New South Wales, Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia.
- Read the complete incident alert. The colour and level provide context; the attached action statement tells you what to do.
- Act early. If the authority advises leaving, begin evacuation while roads and visibility are still usable. NSW Government guidance states, “Leaving early is your safest option.”
- Call 000 for immediate danger. Use Triple Zero when a life is at risk. Do not delay an urgent escape while trying to obtain another update.
Warnings can lag behind events. NSW guidance cautions that a fast-moving fire may spread so quickly that an alert does not arrive before danger. TasALERT likewise says not to wait for an official warning if you see danger or believe you are at risk.

Why the state or territory matters
Bushfire responsibility is organised by jurisdiction. The authority that issues a warning in one state may use a different website, app or map from the authority next door. A service’s app should not be assumed to work nationally, and a national warning label does not identify which local roads are open or which evacuation centre is operating.

How to verify a channel is official
- Use a government or emergency-service domain reached from the jurisdiction’s government or fire-service site.
- Check that the page shows a current incident name, location, update time and action statement.
- Prefer the authority’s own map, incident list, app or alert page over screenshots reposted by other accounts.
- Keep the authority’s information page available before fire season so you are not searching under pressure.
Healthdirect frames the practical question as, “How do I find weather and disaster alerts?” For a bushfire, the answer is to begin with the local emergency or fire authority, then use its live warning tools for the affected area.
Understand the Australian Warning System levels
The Australian Warning System uses the same three labels and colours across participating hazards, including bushfire. The level indicates the seriousness of the threat, but the incident’s wording and action statement remain decisive.
| Level | Colour | What it indicates | What the reader should do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Advice | Yellow | An incident is occurring, with no immediate danger described in the general NSW explanation. | Stay informed and monitor the official incident channel for changes. |
| Watch and Act | Orange | Conditions are changing and the threat has heightened. | Start the actions specified in the alert, including preparing to leave or leaving if directed. |
| Emergency Warning | Red | The highest warning level; danger may be imminent. | Take immediate action according to the incident statement. If evacuation is directed, do not wait for another message. |
A warning level alone cannot tell you which route to use, where to shelter, whether a destination is open or whether a particular suburb is safe. Those details belong in the live incident statement and accompanying map or listing.

Read evacuation information in the live incident alert
Use the action statement, not just the colour
Open the full alert and look for the plain-language instruction attached to the warning. It should explain the threat area and the action expected from people there. Treat that instruction as the operational direction for the incident. If the level changes, reread the newest statement rather than relying on a previous screenshot or notification preview.
Check the official map and incident list
Jurisdictions present evacuation information differently. Victoria, for example, aligns evacuation actions with the warning levels and shows evacuation information on its VicEmergency map and incident list. Other jurisdictions may use a different interface. Look for the current fire perimeter or warning area, evacuation wording, road status and any listed evacuation centre. These details can change during the event.
Verify roads and destinations immediately before leaving
A road that was open earlier can close as fire behaviour, smoke or emergency operations change. An evacuation centre can also change location or capacity. Confirm both in the current official channel and follow any route restriction in the action statement. Do not substitute an old article, a crowd-sourced map or a social post for the latest authority update.
Understand what an alert can and cannot answer
An alert normally identifies the incident, affected area, warning level and required action. It may direct residents to leave, shelter or monitor conditions, but the national label itself does not provide a safe route. Use the linked map or incident listing for the current boundary, road information and destination details. If the map and a forwarded message conflict, use the newest entry from the responsible authority.

A practical step-by-step workflow
Before an incident affects you
- Save the emergency or fire authority for your state or territory in your browser and install its official app if one is provided.
- Identify which authority covers your home, workplace and any regular travel route; the locations may fall under different jurisdictions.
- Know where the authority publishes its incident map, warning list and evacuation information.
- Arrange a backup way to hear updates, such as local ABC radio and a battery-operated radio.
When smoke, fire or a warning appears
- Open the local authority’s live incident page rather than relying on a single phone notification.
- Locate the incident and read its update time, warning level and complete action statement.
- Compare your location with the mapped warning or evacuation area.
- Follow the stated action immediately. At Watch and Act, begin the specified preparations; at Emergency Warning, take the instructed urgent action.
- If you can see danger or conditions are worsening, leave early even without a warning. Do not wait for a message that may be delayed or never arrive.
- Recheck the official channel while it remains safe to do so, because fire boundaries, roads and evacuation locations can change.
If you lose power or mobile coverage
Switch to local ABC radio for updates. NSW Government guidance recommends a battery-operated radio because power or mobile networks may fail. Radio is a backup information path, not a replacement for the authority’s incident-specific evacuation direction. When service returns, verify the latest map and statement through the official channel.
How AusAlert fits into bushfire warnings
What the system is designed to provide
The National Emergency Management Agency describes AusAlert as a national cell-broadcast emergency-warning system for compatible mobile devices. A targeted message can state what is happening, where it is happening, how serious it is, what action is required, who sent the message and where to find more information. NEMA says only authorised emergency-service organisations and some Australian Government agencies can send these messages.
What a cell broadcast does not replace
AusAlert is an additional way to reach people in a defined area. It does not remove the need to check the relevant state or territory emergency authority for the live incident map, road status, evacuation-centre information and detailed action statement. Continue to use the local authority for decisions about leaving.
How to interpret the 2026 national test result
NEMA reported that a national AusAlert test was conducted on Monday 27 July 2026. A Critical Alert was sent at approximately 2:00 pm AEST to compatible devices across Australia, and about 94% of mobile towers successfully broadcast the alert. That percentage describes tower performance in the test; it is not a guarantee that every handset will receive every alert.
The NEMA information page dated 22 July 2026 described planned capabilities. Compatible-device support, coverage, operational status and features can change, so do not assume that every described function is active everywhere. Treat any AusAlert message as a prompt to open the local emergency authority’s current information.
Choose complementary information channels
| Channel | Strength | Limitation to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Local emergency or fire-service website, map or incident list | Official, incident-specific warnings, action statements and evacuation details. | Requires a working device, connection and power; the interface differs by jurisdiction. |
| Official authority app | Can provide location-based notifications and a direct path to the authority’s incident information. | Apps are jurisdiction-specific; installation or notification settings do not guarantee delivery. |
| AusAlert cell broadcast | Can target compatible devices in an affected area and summarise the required action. | Only compatible devices and reachable towers receive it, and detailed evacuation information still belongs to the local authority. |
| Local ABC radio | Can continue providing updates when internet access is difficult. | Broadcast coverage and power can be affected; radio does not replace the official incident action statement. |
Use more than one channel when conditions are serious. The useful combination is an official online source for precise incident and evacuation details, cell broadcast for an additional reach mechanism, and radio as a fallback when power or mobile service is disrupted.
Common mistakes that delay safe action
Waiting for a notification
Warnings are not a personal guarantee of notice. A fast-moving fire may outpace the warning process, and a person outside the targeted broadcast area may not receive a cell message. If you see fire, smoke or rapidly worsening conditions, act on the danger and seek emergency help rather than waiting for a phone alert.

Using a national label without local detail
Advice, Watch and Act and Emergency Warning are intentionally broad national labels. They do not specify the safe road, the open centre or the boundary of the affected neighbourhood. Open the local incident statement every time.
Trusting stale or forwarded information
Road closures, fire boundaries and evacuation-centre arrangements can change during one incident. A forwarded screenshot may omit the update time or action wording. Verify any critical direction in the current authority map or listing.
Assuming one app works everywhere
Emergency services and their digital tools are organised by state and territory. If you cross a border, identify the new jurisdiction’s authority instead of assuming your previous app or notification settings cover the new location.
Continuing to search when immediate action is required
During an Emergency Warning, reading multiple sources can waste time. Follow the official action statement first. Call 000 if life is at risk, and seek further detail only when doing so does not delay escape or other urgent safety action.
Keep information available when communications fail
Power outages and mobile-network disruption are plausible during a major fire. Keep a battery-operated radio available and know the local ABC frequency before an emergency. Charge phones when warnings first appear, but do not rely on a charged phone as the only information source. If the internet fails, radio may still carry local updates; if radio reception is unavailable, follow any evacuation direction already issued and contact emergency services when life is at risk.
Recommended Free Tools
When a connection returns, go back to the jurisdiction’s official channel. Radio reports are useful for continuity, while the authority’s live map and statement provide the detailed, location-specific instructions needed for route and evacuation decisions.
How to judge whether an update is current
- Find the publication or update time on the incident entry.
- Check whether the warning level or action statement has changed since your last review.
- Confirm that the map, road information and evacuation-centre listing refer to the same incident.
- Prefer the newest entry from the responsible authority over an older summary from another site.
- Remember that general guidance can be older than the live event. The NSW bushfire guidance cited for warning principles was last updated 22 November 2023; use the current local alert for decisions during a fire.
As of October 2026, warnings and evacuation directions remain volatile information. Check the official channel during the incident rather than relying on an article, saved page or previous season’s instructions.

Questions readers ask
Is the Australian Warning System enough to decide whether I should leave?
No. Advice, Watch and Act, and Emergency Warning provide a common severity framework, but the incident’s action statement tells you what to do in your specific location. It may identify an evacuation area, route restriction or other instruction that the colour alone cannot show.
What if there is no warning for the fire I can see?
Do not wait. NSW guidance warns that a rapidly spreading fire may leave little time for an alert, and TasALERT says not to wait for an official warning when you see danger or believe you are at risk. Move away from danger when it is safe and call 000 if life is at risk.
Where can I find an evacuation centre?
Check the current incident map or listing operated by the relevant state or territory authority. In Victoria, VicEmergency displays evacuation information on its map and incident list. Locations and availability can change, so verify the entry immediately before travelling.
Will AusAlert reach every phone?
No. AusAlert targets compatible devices in a defined area through reachable mobile towers. In the 27 July 2026 national test, about 94% of mobile towers successfully broadcast the alert; that test result does not guarantee delivery to every handset or location.
Should I rely on an emergency app?
An official app can provide a direct route to local warnings, but apps are organised by jurisdiction and notification settings do not guarantee delivery. Keep the authority’s website or incident map available as well, especially when travelling across state or territory borders.
What is the best backup if the internet or power fails?
Use local ABC radio and keep a battery-operated radio available. NSW Government guidance recommends this fallback because power and mobile networks may be affected. Radio can maintain updates, but use the official incident statement for detailed evacuation decisions whenever the connection returns.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which organisation issues the live bushfire warning?
The state or territory emergency or fire authority responsible for the location issues the live warning. Use its official map, incident list, app or alert page; national labels do not replace local incident detail.
What does Watch and Act mean?
It means conditions are changing and the threat has heightened. Begin the actions in the incident statement, including preparing to leave or leaving if directed.
What does an Emergency Warning require?
It is the highest warning level and indicates danger may be imminent. Take the immediate action stated in the alert and do not wait for another message if evacuation is directed.
Can I wait for AusAlert before leaving?
No. AusAlert is an additional cell-broadcast channel for compatible devices. A fast-moving fire may outpace warnings, so leave when directed or when you believe you are at risk.
Where are evacuation roads and centres listed?
Check the current incident map and listing from the responsible authority. Road status and centre arrangements can change, so verify them immediately before leaving.
What should I do if communications fail?
Listen to local ABC radio using a battery-operated radio. Radio is a fallback; when service returns, confirm the latest action statement and map through the official authority.
Is the 94% AusAlert figure a guarantee?
No. NEMA’s 27 July 2026 test found about 94% of mobile towers successfully broadcast the alert. It describes tower test performance, not delivery to every handset.
