The most reliable way to discover a new Xbox game is to turn your favorites into specific search criteria, then verify each candidate in the current Xbox catalog. Game Pass categories currently exposed on the catalog page
The page lists categories including action and adventure, classics, family and kids, indie, platformer, puzzle and trivia, racing and flying, role playing, shooter, simulation, sports, and strategy. These are useful starting shelves, but a game can appear under more than one broad idea in your own mental model. If you want a strategy game with a strong story, for example, start with strategy and then inspect the description and mechanics rather than searching for a nonexistent “story strategy” guarantee.

Xbox describes its PC app as offering “Browse the library, view recommendations, filter by genre” for PC Game Pass discovery. This is specifically a PC app capability; it should not be generalized to every Xbox console interface.

- Open the Xbox PC app and go to the PC Game Pass library.
- Use the genre filter that best matches your search brief.
- Review the app’s recommendations as additional candidates, not as proof that a title resembles one of your favorites.
- Open a candidate’s detail page and verify PC support, subscription inclusion, required storage or technical information shown there, and multiplayer details if relevant.
- Keep a short list of games to install or investigate further rather than downloading every result.
The official description confirms that recommendations exist, but it does not explain how they are generated or establish their accuracy. Compare every recommendation’s mechanics and play context with your own reference games.
Compare a candidate with the games you already enjoy
After filtering, stop browsing and evaluate a small number of candidates. This is where personal taste matters more than the catalog taxonomy.

Short, repeatable sessions
Look for language about runs, rounds, matches, levels, or bite-sized challenges. Confirm whether progression carries between sessions if that affects your choice.
Story and character focus
Read the campaign and narrative description, then check whether the game is primarily single-player or expects online participation. A role-playing label alone does not establish the amount or style of storytelling.
Co-op and competitive play
Use the multiplayer filter to narrow results, then inspect the listing for the exact mode. Verify whether co-op is local or online, how many players are supported, and whether a separate subscription or platform requirement is shown.

- Confirm the selected platform is the one you actually use.
- Check the current price if you plan to buy rather than subscribe.
- Check the subscription tier, not merely the fact that a game appears somewhere in a Game Pass view.
- Review the listing’s multiplayer and technical details for the mode you need.
- Recheck the page at the time you plan to play, especially after a catalog or subscription update.

What to do when the search produces poor results
The list is too large
Keep the genre filter, then add platform and one practical constraint such as price, multiplayer, or age rating. Avoid selecting every optional filter at once; over-filtering can hide worthwhile games.
The list is too small
Remove one narrow constraint, try a neighboring genre, or search the broader Xbox catalog instead of only the Game Pass library. A small result set may reflect platform or regional availability rather than a lack of games in the genre.

The results are technically similar but feel wrong
Return to your reference games and identify the mechanic you actually valued. Replace a broad genre term with that mechanic in your comparison notes, then inspect descriptions and feature details manually. The catalog filter cannot infer your personal reason for liking a game.
A recommended PC-app game is unavailable
Open its detail page and verify PC support and the current PC Game Pass status. Recommendations and library membership are separate discovery signals; a recommendation is not a promise of access.
A game appears in one view but not another
Check whether you changed platform, subscription tier, collection, or region. Those selections can legitimately produce different lists. Use the individual listing as the final check.
A repeatable 15-minute discovery routine
