Use a map or station-finder app with location access enabled, or search by city, ZIP/postal code, address, or route. Compare the correct fuel type, distance, price, payment options, and opening information before navigating. A station pin, an “open” label, or a displayed price does not prove that fuel is in stock right now. For a trip where running out would be dangerous, look for a report timestamp and call the station or use a service that explicitly reports inventory.
What a nearby-station result actually tells you
A station search answers a location question: which forecourts are mapped near a chosen point or along a route. Depending on the service, the result may also include a posted retail price, fuel grades, payment methods, amenities, ratings, opening hours, or alternative-fuel connectors. Those fields come from different sources and update on different schedules.
Inventory is a separate question. “Station listed,” “open,” and “price shown” can all remain true while a particular grade is temporarily unavailable, a pump is out of service, or a delivery has not arrived. No universal, authoritative live-stock feed was established across countries and fuel types. Treat a price or map pin as useful planning information, not a guarantee of fuel at the pump.

| Where and what you need | Useful tool or data source | What it provides | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States, conventional stations and prices | Station-finder or map app such as GasBuddy | Nearby search, city or ZIP search, distance/price sorting, and filters for fuel type, brand, payment, price, ratings, and amenities. See GasBuddy’s station-search instructions, price-search instructions, and filter documentation. | Those pages do not establish a universal, live conventional-fuel inventory guarantee. |
| United States, electricity, hydrogen, propane, or other alternative fuels | U.S. Department of Energy Alternative Fueling Station Locator | Search near an address or ZIP code and along a route for alternative-fuel locations. | A location listing is not proof that a connector, dispenser, or fuel is available when you arrive; check the listing’s status details and confirm when necessary. |
| United Kingdom, retail petrol and diesel prices | UK Fuel Finder data and participating apps/sites | Current retail prices by fuel type, forecourt information, and time-stamped updates. Traders must submit price changes within 30 minutes of a change. | The 30-minute duty improves reporting timeliness; it does not make every app instantaneous or verify stock in a tank. |
| United Kingdom, map navigation | Google Maps or Waze where the Fuel Finder rollout is available | A TechRadar report dated October 8, 2026 said prices were appearing in those apps when confidence in the price was high. | Rollout and coverage can vary by location. A high-confidence price is still not an inventory confirmation. See the TechRadar report. |

Step-by-step: find a station before you leave
1. Set a precise search area
- Open your map or station-finder app and allow location access while using the app. If you do not want to share location, enter a city, ZIP/postal code, street address, or destination.
- For a long trip, search the route rather than only the current neighborhood. A station a few miles away in the wrong direction may cost more time than one farther along your planned road.
- Zoom the map out only as far as needed. A broad search can hide whether a result is actually reachable without a detour, toll, border crossing, or restricted road.
GasBuddy documents both device-location searches and searches by city or postal code in its station-finding guide. If the app asks for a radius, begin with a small radius and expand it when no suitable result appears.

2. Select the fuel your vehicle can use
Choose the grade or energy type before comparing prices. “Gas,” “petrol,” “diesel,” E85, LPG, CNG, hydrogen, and charging connectors are not interchangeable. A station can sell one product while being unable to serve your vehicle.
- For petrol vehicles, check the required octane or grade in the owner’s manual or fuel flap.
- For diesel vehicles, verify that the listing is for road diesel rather than a differently regulated product.
- For flex-fuel vehicles, confirm that the pump offers the permitted ethanol blend before selecting an E85 price.
- For an electric vehicle, check connector standard, charging speed, and whether the point is public, restricted, or currently reported as available.
- For hydrogen, propane, or CNG, verify the exact dispensing format and vehicle compatibility; alternative-fuel station maps may list a site even when a dispenser is temporarily offline.
3. Compare the fields that affect the stop
Open each candidate’s detail card instead of choosing from the map pin alone. The most useful comparison axes are:
| Field | How to use it | Common trap |
|---|---|---|
| Distance and route time | Compare the navigation estimate, not straight-line distance. Include the time to leave and rejoin your route. | A station across a divided highway or behind a one-way system may be impractical despite a short map distance. |
| Fuel type and grade | Match the product name and grade to your vehicle. | One station’s “regular” or “unleaded” label may not use the same terminology as another’s. |
| Displayed price | Check the unit (per gallon or per litre), currency, grade, and whether a membership or payment condition applies. | A low price can apply to a different grade, cash-only payment, or an old report. |
| Payment methods | Confirm card, mobile-wallet, fleet, cash, or pay-at-pump support if you need a particular method. | App-reported payment details can lag behind a station’s terminal changes. |
| Hours and access | Check whether pumps operate 24 hours and whether the shop, card terminal, or entrance has separate hours. | “Open” may describe the premises, not every pump or payment channel. |
| Amenities | Use restroom, air, food, lighting, truck access, or accessibility information to choose a safer stop. | Amenity listings are not proof that equipment is working or available to every customer. |
GasBuddy says its filters can narrow results by fuel type, brand, payment method, price, distance, ratings, and amenities. If a station you know is missing, reset filters and search a more specific location; both filters and search geography can exclude otherwise valid results. The relevant instructions are in its search-filter guide.

Prefer a result that shows when its price or status was last updated. Read whether the time refers to a user-submitted price, a government feed, a station’s own report, or an app refresh. A timestamp tells you the age of the information; it does not certify that the tank still contains fuel.

In the UK, Fuel Finder collects retail prices and forecourt data and makes the data available to third-party apps and websites. Traders are required to submit a price change within 30 minutes, as described by the Fuel Finder collection and the government’s data-access guidance. That is a reporting requirement for price changes, not a promise that every downstream app has refreshed or that a grade is in stock.
5. Navigate only after checking access
Open the station’s directions and verify the entrance, side of the road, and whether the route crosses a restricted turn. If you are already driving, have a passenger make the comparison or pull over safely; do not manipulate a phone while moving. Save a second station farther along the route when the first stop is critical.
How to tell whether fuel is really available
What an app can confirm
An app can often confirm that a station exists in its database, that a price was reported, or that a source marked the location open at a particular time. Some services may expose an explicit stock status, outage notice, or station message. Read the wording carefully: “last reported available” is different from “available now,” and “price updated” says nothing about inventory.

- That the specific petrol or diesel grade you need remains in the tank.
- That every pump is operational, powered, and accepting your payment method.
- That a delivery, outage, queue, or local emergency has not changed conditions since the last update.
- That a listed alternative-fuel connector is compatible with your vehicle or currently free.

- LEAK-PROOF DESIGN: The gasoline can has 2 brass shut-off valves, one at the tank and one at the hose. This design allows for safe and easy disconnection of the hose, which can prevent fuel leaks, thus reducing fire hazards and environmental risks.
- WIDE APPLICATION: This portable fuel tank can be placed in the boot of a truck, garage, shop, kit, or shed. Using this liquid fuel tank for fast, clean, and reliable delivery of gasoline, diesel, paraffin, light oil, etc., you can refuel your car, motorbike, boat, lawnmower, snow blower, generator, or automobile anytime, anywhere!
When fuel availability is mission-critical
- Open the station details and look for a stock, outage, or status message with a timestamp.
- Call the station using the phone number shown by a reliable map listing or the station’s official site. Ask specifically for the fuel grade, not merely whether the station is open.
- Ask whether pumps are operating and whether payment or access restrictions apply.
- Keep a second reachable station in reserve, especially at night, in rural areas, during severe weather, or near a known shortage.
- Leave enough range to reach that backup; do not plan to arrive with the warning light as your only margin.
A phone call is also time-sensitive: conditions can change after you call. Treat confirmation as a snapshot and continue to the station without unnecessary delay.

For conventional petrol and diesel, use a map or station-finder app that supports location, city, and ZIP-code searches. GasBuddy documents sorting results by distance or price and filtering by fuel type, brand, payment method, price, ratings, and amenities. Set the fuel grade first, then verify the unit and age of the displayed price.
For electricity, hydrogen, propane, and other alternative fuels, start with the Department of Energy Alternative Fueling Station Locator. Enter an address or ZIP code, or search along a route. Open the individual listing to inspect fuel type, connector or dispenser details, access restrictions, and any status information. If the trip depends on one charger or dispenser, confirm its current condition through the operator because a map listing alone is not a live-availability guarantee.

Use Fuel Finder data or an app that clearly identifies it as the source when comparing petrol and diesel prices. Check the fuel type, forecourt address, timestamp, and whether the displayed figure is current for the station you intend to use. The UK’s 30-minute submission rule applies to traders reporting price changes; it does not mean an app, cache, or navigation display updates at that exact moment.

On October 8, 2026, TechRadar reported that Google Maps and Waze were beginning to show UK station prices supplied through Fuel Finder, with prices displayed only when confidence in correctness was high. The report attributes this statement to Sarah-Jayne Williams, director of product partnerships for Google Maps and Waze: “Accuracy is very important, so we will still show the petrol station and where it is, but you’ll only see a price if we have high confidence that it’s the right price.” This threshold concerns the price shown; it does not verify fuel inventory. Because rollout behavior can differ by location, check the app’s current display before relying on it.

The regulator’s ANP com VC – Postos app can locate authorized stations near you or in a selected city. Use its station details to check address, authorization, products sold, fuel origin, and available inspection or fuel-quality monitoring results. These records help you choose a legitimate and suitable station, but they are not a real-time tank-level report. Call ahead when a particular product is essential.
Troubleshoot common search problems
The station you know is missing
- Clear brand, fuel, price, rating, amenity, and payment filters.
- Search the exact city, postal code, or street address rather than the broad region.
- Increase the radius gradually and check whether the map is centered on the wrong location.
- Search the station name directly, then compare its address with the route.
- Try a second map or regulator-maintained source; coverage is not identical between databases.
The price looks wrong or stale
- Confirm the grade, currency, and unit of measure.
- Read the last-updated time and source label.
- Refresh the result and reopen the station detail page.
- Compare two nearby stations rather than assuming the lowest number is current.
- In the UK, remember that the 30-minute trader reporting duty is not an instantaneous downstream refresh.
The app says open, but pumps may not work
Check for a separate pump-status or outage note, then call. Shop hours, forecourt access, card-terminal operation, and individual pump service can differ. If you cannot obtain confirmation, route to the backup station while you still have sufficient range.
Location permission is unavailable
Enter a city, ZIP/postal code, address, or destination manually. On a route, search the next town or service area rather than “near me.” If the app still returns no results, check connectivity, remove overly narrow filters, and use another data source.
A practical decision checklist
- Have I selected the exact petrol, diesel, alternative-fuel, or charging type?
- Is the station reachable in the direction I am traveling, with a usable entrance?
- What is the displayed price, in which unit and currency, and when was it updated?
- Does the station accept my required payment method?
- Are hours, access restrictions, and essential amenities suitable?
- Does any source explicitly report inventory, and what timestamp accompanies it?
- If inventory is not confirmed, have I called and identified a backup station?
The safest interpretation is simple: station search tells you where to go; price data helps you compare; only a current, explicit stock report or direct station confirmation addresses whether your required fuel is available now.
