There is no universal password file for every one-click LAMP image. On a DigitalOcean LAMP Droplet using local MySQL, read /root/.digitalocean_password. A DigitalOcean Droplet created with a managed database uses /root/.digitalocean_dbaas_credentials, the DATABASE_URL variable, and the database cluster’s control-panel details instead. Bitnami images use a generated application password for MySQL, while an Amazon Lightsail Bitnami LAMP instance exposes it with cat bitnami_application_password.
The procedure below first identifies which image and database arrangement you have, then gives the exact command, login format, and fixes for the common cases where a discovered password is rejected.

Start by identifying the image and database arrangement
One-click LAMP is a deployment format, not a single operating-system image. The provider, image publisher, and whether MySQL runs locally or as a managed service determine the account name, password location, hostname, port, and authentication method.
Before reading a file, answer these questions:
- Was the server created from DigitalOcean’s LAMP 1-Click image, a Bitnami LAMP virtual machine, or the Bitnami LAMP image in Amazon Lightsail?
- Did you add a managed MySQL database when creating the DigitalOcean Droplet?
- Are you trying to log in to MySQL running on the server, or to a remote managed cluster?
The following distinctions prevent the most common mistake: using local-root instructions for a deployment whose local MySQL service has been stopped and disabled.

| Deployment | Credential source | Typical database user | Endpoint and port | Local MySQL status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DigitalOcean LAMP 1-Click with local MySQL | /root/.digitalocean_password |
root |
Local socket or host; normally local MySQL | Enabled by the image |
| DigitalOcean LAMP with managed MySQL | /root/.digitalocean_dbaas_credentials, DATABASE_URL, and cluster Overview page |
doadmin by default |
Cluster hostname and specified port; 3306 is standard unless the cluster shows another value | Stopped and disabled on the Droplet |
| Bitnami LAMP virtual machine | /home/bitnami/bitnami_credentials |
root |
Usually local to the virtual machine | Managed by the Bitnami image |
| Amazon Lightsail Bitnami LAMP | bitnami_application_password in the instance home directory |
root for MySQL |
Usually local to the instance | Managed by the Bitnami image |
Paths and usernames in this table are image-specific. Do not assume that a password called bitnami, a Linux account named bitnami, or a local root account exists on another image.
DigitalOcean LAMP 1-Click with local MySQL
1. Connect to the Droplet as root
Open an SSH session with the root account. Use the root password supplied when the Droplet was created, or authenticate with the SSH key attached to the Droplet. You need root access because the credential file is under /root and is intentionally not world-readable.
From a Unix-like workstation, the connection has this general form:
ssh root@SERVER_IP
Replace SERVER_IP with the Droplet’s address. On Windows, use an SSH-capable terminal or the provider’s browser-based console. A successful shell prompt confirms that you are on the server; it does not yet prove that this Droplet uses local MySQL.
2. Read the generated MySQL password
Run the following command exactly:
sudo cat /root/.digitalocean_password
DigitalOcean’s LAMP image documentation identifies this file as the location of the MySQL root password. The same image initializes the MySQL root account, runs mysql_secure_installation, and creates the debian-sys-maint system user for service-management scripts.
Treat the output as a secret. Do not paste it into a support ticket, commit it to source control, place it in a public log, or leave it in a shared terminal transcript. If you only need to use it once, read it and then clear the terminal or close the session.
3. Log in without putting the password in shell history
Use the interactive prompt form:
mysql -u root -p
When MySQL displays Enter password:, type the value from the file. Nothing will appear while you type. Omitting the password after -p is deliberate: a command such as mysql -u root -pYOUR_PASSWORD can be exposed through shell history, process listings, monitoring, or copied command output.
If the server requires an explicit local socket or host, first try the default local command above. The image normally configures local access so that the client can discover the server through its standard socket. Add connection options only when an error identifies a different socket, host, or port.

4. Confirm which server accepted the login
After connecting, run a harmless identity query:
SELECT USER(), CURRENT_USER(), VERSION();
USER() shows the account and client host presented during authentication, while CURRENT_USER() shows the account MySQL used for privilege checking. The version confirms that you reached the expected local server rather than a different endpoint configured in a client file.
DigitalOcean LAMP with a managed MySQL database
Selecting the managed database option changes the workflow. The one-click image stops and disables the local MySQL service, and the Droplet receives connection information for the managed cluster. A local mysql -u root -p attempt can therefore fail even when the password file on the Droplet is correct for another arrangement.
1. Read the Droplet’s managed-database credentials
Connect to the Droplet as root and inspect the provider-created file:
sudo cat /root/.digitalocean_dbaas_credentials
The deployment also provides a DATABASE_URL environment variable. Depending on how your application starts, inspect the variable in the same user and shell context used by the application:
printf '%sn' "$DATABASE_URL"
The file or URL can contain the hostname, port, username, database name, password, and SSL-related settings. Keep those values private. A URL often embeds the password, so avoid posting it in issue trackers or copying it into shell history.
2. Verify the cluster details in the control panel
Open the managed database’s Overview page in the DigitalOcean control panel. It shows the connection endpoint, port, database name, trusted sources or network restrictions, and SSL requirements. The default accessible user is doadmin. Port 3306 is standard for MySQL, but use the port displayed for your cluster; managed services can expose a different port.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf the password in the Droplet file has been rotated, the control panel is authoritative. Use its password reveal or copy control rather than assuming an old value remains valid.
3. Connect with the managed endpoint
Use the managed username and hostname, not localhost. This example shows the shape of a connection; replace every uppercase placeholder with the values shown for your cluster:

mysql -u doadmin -p -h HOSTNAME -P 25060 -D DATABASE
The example port 25060 is illustrative of a cluster-specific port. If your Overview page lists 3306 or another value, use that value instead. The -p option with no password attached opens a secure prompt.
Apply the cluster’s SSL settings exactly as displayed. If SSL is required, add the certificate or SSL options specified by the provider and ensure that the Droplet is an allowed trusted source. A valid username and password cannot overcome a blocked network source or a missing TLS requirement.

If you are unsure which server a command is reaching, check the local service state:
sudo systemctl status mysql
On a managed-database deployment, the local service is expected to be stopped and disabled. In that case, do not start it merely to make a local login work; point the client or application at the managed hostname and port instead.
Bitnami LAMP virtual machines
Bitnami uses a different credential model from the DigitalOcean LAMP image. Bitnami documents the MySQL username as root and states that the database password is the same as the application password.
Retrieve the generated application password
On supported Bitnami virtual-machine images, connect over SSH and run:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →sudo cat /home/bitnami/bitnami_credentials
The file contains the generated application credentials. Newer images generate the password randomly. Older image revisions can differ, so do not test a presumed universal password such as bitnami when the image supplies a credential file.
Use the password for MySQL
For a local MySQL login, use:
mysql -u root -p
Enter the application password when prompted. If you are connecting from an application rather than the shell, copy the value into the application’s protected secret configuration and preserve any special characters exactly. Do not add quotation marks unless the application’s configuration syntax requires them.

If the image is hosted by a provider that changes the SSH user or home directory, follow that provider’s connection instructions first. The credential principle remains the same, but a path copied from a different Bitnami platform may not exist on your instance.
Amazon Lightsail Bitnami LAMP
Open an SSH session from the instance page
In the Lightsail console, open the instance’s Connect tab and choose Connect using SSH. This opens a shell in the instance’s normal home directory.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Read the password file
Run:
cat bitnami_application_password
If the shell is not in the home directory, use the absolute home-directory form:
cat $HOME/bitnami_application_password
AWS documents this as the default application-password procedure for a Bitnami LAMP instance. Bitnami’s MySQL documentation identifies that application password as the database password, so use it with the MySQL root account:
mysql -u root -p
Keep the value private and avoid placing it directly after -p.
Local versus managed MySQL: what changes
The choice between a local database and a managed cluster affects more than the password path. It changes the endpoint, account, network controls, maintenance responsibility, and whether a local service exists.
| Decision point | Local MySQL on the LAMP server | Managed MySQL cluster |
|---|---|---|
| Where credentials are found | Image-specific local file, such as /root/.digitalocean_password |
Provider-created credentials file, environment variable, and control-panel connection details |
| Username | Typically root for the one-click image |
doadmin is the default accessible user in the DigitalOcean managed-MySQL guide |
| Hostname | Usually local socket or local host | Managed cluster hostname; do not substitute localhost |
| Port | Local MySQL defaults | Use the cluster’s listed port; 3306 is standard, but a different port may be assigned |
| SSL and network access | Usually local-server authentication | Use the cluster’s SSL settings and permitted trusted sources |
| Service on the Droplet | Enabled by the image | Stopped and disabled after managed-database setup |
| Maintenance | You maintain the database service, storage, updates, and backups | The managed service handles provider-side maintenance; you still manage users, permissions, application settings, and recovery requirements |
Why the password does not work
The wrong image instructions were used
Check the image name and provider in the server’s control panel. A DigitalOcean path does not apply to a Bitnami VM, and the Lightsail file is not the same as the DigitalOcean file. Return to the matching section above before changing any account settings.
The server uses a managed database
If local MySQL is stopped or disabled, a local root password is irrelevant to the application. Read /root/.digitalocean_dbaas_credentials, inspect DATABASE_URL, and copy the endpoint, port, database, username, password, and SSL settings from the cluster Overview page.

Whitespace or a damaged copy was introduced
Passwords can contain characters that are easy to omit when copied. Read the file again, paste into the interactive prompt, and avoid adding a trailing space or newline. Do not edit the credential file to “clean up” the value; that can destroy the only record of the generated secret without changing the actual MySQL account.
The command exposed the password
If you previously used a command with the password appended to -p, remove that shell-history entry and rotate the password if the command could have been observed by another user, monitoring system, or log collector. Interactive prompting is safer for one-off administration.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The endpoint, port, or trusted source is wrong
A managed connection can fail before authentication when the hostname or port is wrong, the Droplet is not an allowed trusted source, or a firewall blocks outbound traffic. Compare the command with the cluster Overview page and test again with the exact endpoint and port shown there.
SSL is required
Some managed clusters require encrypted connections. Follow the SSL mode and certificate settings supplied by the provider. A password error is not always a password problem: a TLS negotiation failure or certificate error must be corrected with the cluster’s connection parameters.
The credential file is missing
Confirm that you are logged in to the intended server and that the path is typed exactly. Use root privileges for files under /root. If the file truly does not exist, identify the image revision and deployment method before attempting recovery. DigitalOcean’s catalog documents the path for its LAMP image, but it does not promise one reset procedure for every image revision or authentication plugin.
Root authentication behaves differently
Do not blindly alter MySQL authentication plugins or delete system users. The one-click image configures root and creates debian-sys-maint for initialization scripts. Changing those accounts can break service management. Use the current recovery instructions for the exact image revision and preserve a backup of configuration files before making changes.
Protect and manage the credentials after you find them
- Restrict credential-file permissions and keep access limited to administrators who need it.
- Never commit the file,
DATABASE_URL, or a copied password to source control. - Do not paste full connection URLs into public tickets, chat rooms, screenshots, or monitoring dashboards.
- Prefer environment variables or a secrets manager for application deployment rather than embedding a password in code.
- Use separate application users with only the required privileges instead of giving an application the MySQL root account.
- Rotate a password immediately if it appeared in shell history, logs, a terminal recording, or an unauthorized message.
- After rotation, update every consumer: the application, scheduled jobs, migration tools, backups, and administrative scripts.
A safe diagnostic sequence
When a login fails, use this order so that each test answers one question without changing the server:
- Record the provider and image name from the control panel.
- Determine whether a managed database was selected and whether local MySQL is running.
- Read only the credential file associated with that deployment.
- Confirm the username, hostname, port, database name, SSL requirement, and trusted-source rules.
- Run
mysql -u ... -pwith the password entered interactively. - If the connection fails, classify the error as file/path, network, TLS, username, or password related before changing configuration.
- Use the provider’s recovery procedure for that exact image if the documented credential is absent or rejected; avoid speculative edits to authentication settings.
The key fact is simple: one-click LAMP credentials belong to the image and database architecture that created them. Match the lookup path and connection command to that deployment, and a rejected password becomes a diagnosable configuration problem rather than a guessing exercise.
