For one piece missing from a newly opened LEGO set, use LEGO’s official Replacement Pieces service and choose Missing pieces. Find the set by the five- to seven-digit number printed on the box or in the building instructions, identify the absent element from the inventory, and submit the request. Use a different route for a broken part, a missing numbered bag, or a piece lost from an older set.
Choose the correct LEGO support route first
The best route depends on why the part is unavailable and how much is missing. Selecting the wrong category can send you through a process intended for a different problem.
| Problem | LEGO route | What to do | What LEGO may request |
|---|---|---|---|
| One or several pieces absent from a newly opened set | Replacement Pieces > Missing pieces | Search for the set by name or number, select each absent element, and submit the request. | A separate request for each set; case-specific details if needed. |
| Piece cracked, broken, or damaged when the new set was opened | Broken Bricks | Search with the set number and describe the damage. | The damaged piece for inspection and, occasionally, a copy of the receipt. |
| A complete numbered bag is missing or many parts are absent from a new set | LEGO customer service by phone | Call LEGO and identify a couple of the most unusual missing bricks before the call. | Proof of purchase may be requested, depending on the set and quantity. |
| A piece was lost from an older or previously owned set | Pick a Brick | Search for the element or set and buy the available part. | Fees and order thresholds shown on the live order page; availability varies. |
LEGO’s replacement-parts and help pages used for these instructions are primarily U.S. versions. The company also exposes a missing-pieces workflow for India, but the available guidance does not establish that eligibility, shipping, fees, or every step is identical in every country. Open the LEGO service page for the country where the order should be delivered and follow its current instructions.

Find the set number before you start
The set number is the quickest way to locate the exact product, especially when several sets have similar names. LEGO says current set numbers are five to seven digits and appear prominently on the front of the box and on the building instructions.

On the box
- Look for the large product number near the set name, age range, or barcode area on the front or side of the box.
- Copy every digit carefully. Do not substitute a barcode, a character number, or a piece number.
In the instructions
- Check the cover and opening pages for the same five- to seven-digit set number.
- If the box has been discarded, the booklet is normally enough to begin a request.
Searching by number avoids selecting a similarly named set in LEGO’s request form. Keep the box, instructions, and purchase details nearby until the case is resolved.
Identify the exact missing element
Do not rely only on a general description such as “small gray tile.” LEGO sets can contain parts that look almost identical but differ in shape, thickness, print, connection points, or color.
Use the inventory and the assembly step
- Return to the instruction step where the build stops or where the completed model differs from the illustration.
- Compare the loose parts with the parts inventory in the booklet, if the booklet includes one.
- For newer sets, inspect the back of the instructions for the element numbers associated with the parts.
- Confirm the color and shape against the drawing. A number from another set or a visually similar color can identify the wrong element.
Look for a molded design number
If you have the physical piece but cannot identify it, examine it under bright light. LEGO says many elements have a small four- or five-digit design number molded into the inside. Rotate the piece and inspect recessed areas, inner walls, or the underside; the number can be difficult to see in shadow. Enter the number together with the color when searching LEGO’s replacement service or Pick a Brick.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen an older number produces no result
Numbers can change over time. LEGO’s special-piece guidance suggests checking whether an older element has a current number or contacting LEGO for help. A search result still depends on present stock, so a correct identification does not guarantee that the exact part is available.
Request a piece missing from a newly opened set
Use this process when the set is new and an individual element was absent from the original packaging.
- Open LEGO’s Replacement Pieces page. Choose the option labeled Missing pieces, not Broken Bricks or Pick a Brick.
- Find the set. Enter the set name or the five- to seven-digit number from the box or instructions. The number is usually the most precise search.
- Select the absent element. Use the parts list, element number, design number, color, and shape to verify that the selected part matches the missing one.
- Review the request. Check the set, quantity, color, and element description before submitting. If the set contains multiple absent parts, add each one in the same request flow when the page allows it.
- Submit each set separately. LEGO’s missing-pieces page says a separate request is required for every set. Do not combine omissions from two different sets into one case.
- Follow any case-specific instructions. Keep the box, booklet, and purchase information available. LEGO may request additional details depending on the set and the circumstances.
The missing-pieces route is described for parts absent from a new set. It should not be treated as a universal free replacement route for a piece that was lost after the set had been built or used.
What to do if a piece is broken or damaged
A cracked, warped, or broken piece is a product-damage issue rather than a missing-piece issue. Open the Replacement Pieces service, choose Broken Bricks, search using the set number, and describe what is wrong.
- Keep the damaged original. LEGO may ask you to return it for inspection.
- Keep the receipt or other purchase record available. LEGO says it may occasionally request a copy.
- Describe the failure precisely: for example, a crack in a hinge, a split connection point, or a part that arrived deformed.
- Watch for LEGO’s email confirming that the replacement is on its way.
Do not discard the original part before LEGO tells you it is unnecessary; the company’s inspection request is possible, not automatic.

Handle a missing numbered bag or many missing parts by phone
If an entire prepackaged bag is absent, or a new set is missing many pieces, LEGO advises calling customer service rather than submitting a long list through the single-piece form. Its help guidance states: “If you discover that a prepack bag is missing or you’re missing many pieces from a new set, it’s best to give us a call.”
Prepare before calling
- Have the set number, set name, and your delivery country ready.
- Identify two or more unusual missing bricks. LEGO says these distinctive parts can help its support team determine what is missing.
- Count or estimate the missing quantity and note whether the omissions appear to come from one numbered bag.
- Keep the box, instructions, remaining bags, and purchase information available.
Depending on the set and the number of missing pieces, LEGO may request proof of purchase. That is a possibility rather than a requirement for every call.
Find a replacement for a lost piece from an older set
For an element lost after ownership or from an older set, use LEGO’s Pick a Brick service to search for the element or the set. This is a purchase of an available part, not the same request route used for an omission in a newly opened set.
- Identify the piece with the instruction inventory, element number, molded design number, color, and shape.
- Search Pick a Brick by the element number or set information.
- Confirm that the displayed part matches the required color and version. Similar-looking parts may have different dimensions or connection geometry.
- Review the live order page for any service fee and the threshold at which it applies before checkout.
- Check availability and delivery information. LEGO says pieces ship when all pieces in an order are available, so an unavailable item can affect the order.
Fees, thresholds, stock, and delivery dates can change. Use the current order page rather than relying on an old price or a past shipping estimate.
What if LEGO no longer lists the exact older piece?
Older elements can leave the active selection. LEGO explains that it sometimes runs out of a piece and no longer has the exact replacement. A similar current piece may be available, but it may not be interchangeable in the model.
Check for a successor number
If the original number returns no result, check LEGO’s special-piece guidance for a current number or contact LEGO for help. Compare the replacement’s dimensions, connection points, color, and printing before ordering.
Consider outside sellers carefully
LEGO notes that fan websites and other retailers may carry new or used parts. These purchases are separate from LEGO’s service, and LEGO says it is not responsible for those sites. Before buying, verify:
- the exact design or element number;
- the color and any printed decoration;
- whether the condition is new or used;
- the seller’s photographs, description, and return terms.
A generic brick with the same apparent color may not be the correct part for the build.

Can LEGO send a replacement for any missing piece?
LEGO’s official Missing pieces route is intended for an individual part absent from a newly opened set. That is different from a piece misplaced after a model has been built, a part damaged through use, or an element from a second-hand set. For those situations, the company directs customers to Broken Bricks, Pick a Brick, or customer service according to the circumstances.
Do not assume that every request is automatically approved, free, available in every country, or covered by the same shipping rules. The service page for the delivery country controls the options shown to you. If LEGO asks for extra information, such as the original damaged part or purchase evidence, provide it through the case instructions rather than opening duplicate requests.
If the form cannot find your set or element
- Recheck the set number. Current LEGO set numbers are five to seven digits; a barcode, minifigure number, or molded part number will not identify the set.
- Try the set name only after checking the number. Similar names can produce several results.
- For a part search, compare both the element number in newer instructions and the molded design number. They are not always the same identifier.
- Check the color and version shown in the result. A visually similar element may have a different geometry or decoration.
- If an older number has no listing, look for a current number in LEGO’s special-piece guidance or contact LEGO for help.
- Confirm that you are using the LEGO service page for the country where the replacement or order should be delivered.
Finding no listing does not prove that the piece never existed; it may indicate a changed number, discontinued stock, or a country-specific catalog difference.

What to do after submitting a request
Save the confirmation details and keep the relevant packaging and parts until the case is closed. For a Broken Bricks claim, retain the damaged element because LEGO may request it for inspection. For a missing-bag call, keep the remaining numbered bags and inventory available in case the support representative needs more information.
LEGO says it will email when a damage replacement is on its way. Do not infer a universal processing time or delivery promise for every route; availability, country, and the case details can affect what happens next. If a representative gives you specific instructions, follow those instructions instead of submitting another overlapping claim.
International service and changing fees
Replacement-parts pages can differ by market. The U.S. pages describe the routes in this guide, while LEGO also provides country-specific workflows, including an India missing-pieces page. The available guidance does not establish identical eligibility, fees, shipping, or request steps worldwide.
For Pick a Brick, the order page is the authority for the current service fee, any threshold, stock status, and delivery information. LEGO says pieces ship when all pieces in an order are available. Consequently, adding an unavailable element can affect the whole order rather than producing a guaranteed partial shipment.

- Set: five- to seven-digit set number and set name.
- Location in the build: instruction page or numbered step where the element is needed.
- Element: instruction inventory number, molded design number, color, shape, and quantity.
- Problem type: absent from a new package, broken on arrival, whole bag missing, or lost after ownership.
- Evidence: box, booklet, remaining bags, original damaged part, and purchase information if available.
- Delivery details: country and the current LEGO service page used for the request.
This record is especially useful when several similar gray, black, or transparent parts appear in the same set. It also helps you avoid submitting a design number where LEGO is asking for the set number.
Common mistakes that delay a replacement
Using a piece number instead of a set number
The set number identifies the product in the Missing pieces flow. The element or design number identifies an individual part. Entering one where the other is requested can produce the wrong search results.
Guessing from color alone
LEGO colors can look different under indoor lighting, and two parts can share a color while differing in geometry. Verify the number, shape, and the instruction illustration together.

- New set, one or a few pieces absent: Replacement Pieces > Missing pieces.
- New set, piece arrived broken: Broken Bricks; retain the damaged part.
- New set, whole bag or many pieces absent: call LEGO customer service; note unusual missing bricks first.
- Older or used set, piece lost: search Pick a Brick and review live fees and availability.
- Exact older element unavailable: check for a current number, ask LEGO for help, or carefully evaluate an outside seller.
- More than one set affected: submit a separate request for each set.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the LEGO set number?
LEGO says current set numbers are five to seven digits and appear prominently on the box and building instructions. Use that number instead of the barcode, a minifigure number, or a molded part number.
How do I identify a missing LEGO brick?
Check the instruction step and parts inventory first. Newer instructions may list element numbers on the back. If you have a similar physical piece, inspect its inside or underside under bright light for a small four- or five-digit molded design number, then verify the color and shape.

Can I submit missing pieces from two sets together?
No. LEGO’s Missing pieces page says each set requires a separate request. Use the correct set number for each case.
What if a whole LEGO bag is missing?
LEGO advises calling customer service when a prepackaged bag is missing or many pieces are absent. Have the set number ready and identify a couple of unusual missing bricks so the representative can determine what is affected.
What if the LEGO piece arrived broken?
