Find the set number first, then use the set’s official instructions to identify the missing element. Search that element number—or the piece’s molded design number—in LEGO’s replacement-pieces service or Pick a Brick. If LEGO does not list the part, use BrickLink’s catalog and marketplace, translating LEGO’s identifiers to BrickLink’s item number and checking the exact color and variant before ordering.

This method works for any LEGO Marvel set, but the actual part list, inventory, price, and regional availability depend on the specific set and the date you search.

What you need before searching

Set names are not reliable enough on their own. Marvel sets can have similar names, and a name may be translated or abbreviated in a marketplace listing. The number printed on the box or instruction booklet uniquely identifies the set in LEGO’s catalog. LEGO says current set numbers contain five to seven digits and appear prominently on boxes and instructions. Its guide to identifying LEGO set and piece numbers explains where to look.

  • The five- to seven-digit set number, if available
  • The instruction booklet or a digital copy of the instructions
  • The missing piece’s quantity, color, shape, and any printing or decoration
  • A note of whether the missing item is a regular element, a minifigure part, a printed piece, a stickered component, or an accessory
  • Your delivery region, because replacement services and marketplace shipping differ by location

If you still have the box, photograph the set number before recycling the packaging. If the box and booklet are gone, browse LEGO.com for the set and confirm the model shown in the product result. Do not start by ordering a part found through a generic image search; the same-looking element can exist in multiple colors, prints, or design revisions.

Step 1: Identify the exact Marvel set

Read the number from the box or booklet

Look near the barcode, product title, or front artwork on the box, and on the cover or first pages of the instructions. Record every digit, including leading digits. A one-digit error can take you to a different model, so compare the number with the minifigures and build shown in the instructions.

When only the set name is known

Use LEGO’s website search to find candidate sets, then verify the number against the artwork, release description, and instruction cover. Similar names are not sufficient proof of a match. If you received a used set in a mixed collection, identify the model from its build and instruction images before trying to reconstruct its parts list.

Why the set number comes first

The set number selects the correct instruction file and parts inventory. Searching for “Marvel shield” or “red 1×2 tile” without that context can return several LEGO elements that differ in dimensions, decoration, or shade.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 2: Download the right instructions and parts list

  1. Open LEGO’s service area and search for the recorded set number.
  2. Select the result whose model and set number match your box or booklet.
  3. Open or download the building instructions.
  4. Go to the parts list, normally printed at the back of newer instruction booklets.
  5. Scan the inventory for the missing element and copy its element number exactly.

The parts list is the strongest identification source for a piece supplied with that set because it ties the number to a specific color and quantity. Save the PDF or photograph the relevant page so you can compare it while searching.

Older sets and incomplete instruction files

Some older instruction files may not show a modern-style inventory page. In that case, use LEGO’s set page to obtain the available instructions and identify the piece from the assembly steps, then verify its number through LEGO’s catalog or a BrickLink catalog entry. Treat a catalog match as provisional until shape, color, and decoration agree.

Step 3: Identify the missing element

Element ID versus Design ID

LEGO distinguishes between an element number and a design number. The element number identifies the shape-and-color combination used in a set. The design number identifies the underlying shape and may be printed or molded into the part. LEGO says either number can be entered in its replacement-pieces service or Pick a Brick.

For a newer set, copy the element number from the instructions first. It is usually the fastest route because it already includes the set’s color choice. Keep the design number as a backup when the element number is not searchable or when you need to cross-check a marketplace listing.

Find a molded design number

Many parts have a small four- or five-digit design number molded on an inside surface. Use bright, angled light, rotate the element, and inspect areas hidden by studs or clips. The number can be difficult to read on dark plastic or transparent elements. Record the piece’s color alongside the design number; the design number alone does not establish which color you need.

Record decoration and variant details

Write down whether the element is printed, has a metallic finish, includes a logo, or differs in geometry from a plain version. A printed Marvel torso, shield, or tile may share a base shape with an undecorated element but is not an interchangeable match for display purposes. Also note left- and right-handed versions, alternate hair styles, and accessories that look similar in photographs.

Step 4: Try LEGO’s official replacement route

Replacement-pieces service

Use the set number or the identified element/design number in LEGO’s replacement-pieces service. The service can help locate parts associated with a set and indicate whether a replacement route is offered for that element. Availability is not universal: it can depend on the exact part, current service conditions, and the region selected at the time of the search.

Pick a Brick

Search Pick a Brick with the element number or design number. Refine the result by color and inspect the thumbnail and description. If the result shows a visually similar part, compare the stud layout, dimensions, print, and any cutouts before adding it to a basket. Current stock, delivery charges, and service terms can change, so treat the listing shown during your search as the operative information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When LEGO does not show the part

A missing result does not prove that the piece never existed or that your identification is wrong. Recheck each digit, try the alternate identifier, and confirm that you selected the correct country or region. If the official route still offers no match, move to BrickLink rather than guessing from a product photograph.

Step 5: Search BrickLink with the correct identifier

BrickLink is a separate catalog and seller marketplace. Its help article on part IDs and alternate numbers explains that LEGO’s Design ID describes the shape, LEGO’s Element ID describes the shape-and-color combination, and BrickLink uses its own Item Number. Therefore, pasting a LEGO number into BrickLink may return no result or a different record.

  1. Start at BrickLink’s catalog or marketplace search, such as the BrickLink marketplace.
  2. Search the part by its description, shape, or a known alternate number if the LEGO ID fails.
  3. Use BrickLink’s part-finding guidance at Finding parts to try alternate terms and catalog identifiers.
  4. Open the catalog entry and compare the pictured geometry, color name, print, and variant with your instruction inventory.
  5. Only then review individual seller lots for quantity, condition, shipping, and return terms.

The same physical element can carry different identifiers in the two systems. Keep a small cross-reference note containing the LEGO element number, LEGO design number, BrickLink item number, color, and required quantity. That prevents a later search from mixing identifiers.

Optional secondary searches

After you know the exact identifier, you can search a general marketplace such as Amazon for “LEGO replacement bricks” plus the element or design number. Treat this as a search destination, not as a verified source for a particular part. No specific listing, stock status, seller quality, price, or eligibility has been established here. Confirm the identifier, color, decoration, quantity, and seller description before paying.

Independent parts sellers can also be found through a targeted search for the known item number. The same verification rules apply: a generic title such as “Marvel replacement piece” is not enough to establish a match.

Compare the available routes

Route What it helps with What you must verify
LEGO replacement-pieces service Official search by set or piece identifiers and, where offered, an official replacement request. Whether the exact element is offered in your region at the time of search, plus any service conditions.
LEGO Pick a Brick Search by LEGO element or design number and inspect official color choices. Exact color and variant, current stock, shipping, and applicable service terms.
BrickLink catalog and marketplace Find catalog records and seller listings for parts that may not appear in LEGO’s route. Translate LEGO IDs to the BrickLink item number; check variant, condition, seller terms, and delivery.
General marketplace search Locate possible listings after you know the precise identifier. Seller identity, listing accuracy, part number, color, quantity, stock, shipping, and return policy.

These routes do not guarantee the same availability or total cost. Live inventory and prices were not checked for any particular Marvel element, so use the values displayed for your own region and date.

Confirm the match before ordering

Shape and dimensions

Compare the number of studs, height, underside cavities, clips, bars, hinges, and slopes. Two tiles can share a length and width while differing in thickness or underside geometry. For minifigure accessories, check the handle diameter and connection point.

Color

Use the color named in the instruction inventory, not only a photograph. Lighting and camera white balance can make dark red, bright light yellow, reddish brown, and other close shades look interchangeable. Transparent and metallic elements are especially easy to misidentify.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Print and decoration

Check the exact printed emblem, eye pattern, facial expression, stripe, or logo. A plain element may physically fit but still be the wrong replacement for a decorated Marvel character or vehicle.

Variant and orientation

Inspect left/right versions, mirrored slopes, new molds, and alternate versions of the same character part. If the instructions show two similar pieces, use the step illustration and inventory quantity to determine which one is missing.

Quantity and condition

Count how many copies the set requires and how many you lack. Marketplace listings may sell one element, a pair, or a bulk lot. Confirm whether the listing is new, used, scratched, faded, or incomplete before comparing its total delivered cost with an official option.

The design number finds several colors

Use the inventory’s color and the build step’s illustration to narrow the result. Do not select the closest-looking color from a photograph; the design number identifies the shape, not the set-specific color combination.

The catalog entry has several decorated variants

Open each variant and compare the print placement and artwork. Record the variant designation in your notes so a seller cannot substitute a plain or differently printed version.

The official service has no stock

Check that the region is correct and that the identifier is valid. If LEGO still does not offer the piece, search the verified BrickLink catalog entry and compare multiple seller terms. Availability may change, so a later search can produce a different result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You cannot identify the piece at all

Return to the instruction step where the part is used, photograph the element beside a known LEGO piece for scale, and inspect every surface for a molded number. Identify the shape first, then the color and decoration; searching by a character name alone is too broad.

How to place and document the order

  1. Write the set number, LEGO element/design ID, BrickLink item number if applicable, color, variant, and quantity in one note.
  2. Save a screenshot or PDF of the catalog record that matched the instruction inventory.
  3. Compare the delivered total, not just the listed unit price, including shipping and any minimum-order requirement shown by the service or seller.
  4. Read seller condition, dispatch, return, and regional-delivery terms before checkout.
  5. Keep the order confirmation until the element is inspected and installed.

When the package arrives, compare the part with the saved catalog image and the instruction inventory before opening sealed subassemblies. Check print quality, color, shape, and quantity. If something differs, photograph the discrepancy and use the service or seller’s stated resolution process.

Prevent another missing-piece problem

  • Sort the contents of a new set into trays or labeled cups before building.
  • Keep tiny elements away from packaging waste until the inventory has been checked.
  • When dismantling a set, store decorated and minifigure parts separately from common bricks.
  • Keep the instruction booklet or a digital copy with the set number recorded.
  • For a used set, inventory the parts before beginning a rebuild and record missing quantities immediately.

A short inventory note pays off later: it preserves the identifiers you needed once and makes a replacement search reproducible if another piece goes missing.

A compact decision flow

  1. Know the set? If not, identify it from the box, booklet, or LEGO’s site before naming a part.
  2. Have the inventory? Open the official instructions and copy the element number from the parts list when available.
  3. Can LEGO find it? Try the replacement-pieces service and Pick a Brick with the element or design number.
  4. No official result? Translate the identifier to BrickLink’s catalog using its alternate-number guidance.
  5. Ready to buy? Match shape, color, decoration, variant, quantity, condition, seller or service terms, and regional delivery.

This sequence avoids the most common error: purchasing a visually similar Marvel piece before confirming the set-specific identifier.
