The reliable way to find missing instrumentation is to map critical user and system journeys, define the telemetry each step should produce, exercise those paths, and compare the expected evidence with what reaches your observability backend. AI can accelerate the comparison by reading code, tracing likely execution paths, proposing OpenTelemetry changes, and explaining suspicious trace gaps. It cannot prove that an application is completely instrumented: its conclusions depend on the code, runtime paths, sampling, retained telemetry, and context you provide.
Start with automatic (zero-code) instrumentation for supported frameworks, databases, queues, and runtimes. Then add code-based spans, metrics, logs, or domain events around business operations that automatic agents normally cannot see. Finally, verify export, collection, context propagation, and backend grouping before calling a gap an instrumentation defect.
What “missing instrumentation” actually means
Instrumentation is the code or runtime configuration that causes components to emit observability signals—traces, metrics, and logs. OpenTelemetry summarizes the requirement directly: “For a system to be observable, it must be instrumented: that is, code from the system’s components must emit signals, such as traces, metrics, and logs.” See OpenTelemetry’s instrumentation concepts.
A gap is not simply an empty chart. It is a missing piece of evidence needed to explain a journey. For example, a checkout trace may show an HTTP server span and a database query but no span for fraud evaluation, inventory reservation, authorization, or retry decisions. The request is technically visible, yet the business operation that determines success is opaque.

System measurements such as CPU, memory, and disk usage can reveal resource pressure, but they do not by themselves explain application-level behavior. Google Cloud makes this distinction in its application developer observability guidance. A complete investigation therefore asks two separate questions:
- Did the application emit the signal that should describe this operation?
- If it did, did initialization, sampling, export, collection, and ingestion deliver that signal to the backend?
Confusing those questions leads to unnecessary code changes. A missing backend record can indicate absent instrumentation, a broken exporter, a filter, an incorrect service identity, sampling, or a context-propagation failure.
Automatic and code-based instrumentation cover different edges
OpenTelemetry describes both code-based APIs and SDKs and zero-code instrumentation. Zero-code mechanisms can use agents, bytecode manipulation, monkey patching, or eBPF injection to observe supported libraries and runtime edges. They commonly capture incoming requests, outgoing client calls, database operations, and message-queue interactions. They generally do not know the meaning of application functions such as “select payment method” or “approve loan.” Read the zero-code instrumentation documentation for the mechanism used by your language.

| Approach | What it usually reveals | Where it is weak | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zero-code or automatic | Framework requests, supported client libraries, database calls, queues, and runtime edges | Application-specific branches, business decisions, internal algorithms, and custom async flows | Fast baseline coverage with little source modification |
| Code-based | Domain operations, meaningful milestones, selected attributes, explicit errors, and custom metrics | Requires design, source changes, review, and maintenance as code evolves | Deep visibility into the operations users and operators care about |
| Both together | Automatic service topology plus intentional business context | Duplicate spans, inconsistent names, or conflicting initialization if configured carelessly | Most applications that need both breadth and diagnostic depth |
Do not infer complete coverage from a healthy infrastructure dashboard. A service can have framework spans and host metrics while leaving the most important application decision invisible.
Build a journey map before asking AI to find gaps
Coverage is easiest to assess when it is defined in terms of journeys rather than files. A journey is a path whose failure matters to users or operators.

1. List the critical journeys
Include synchronous and asynchronous work. Typical examples are sign-in, search, checkout, background-job completion, data import, and a model-assisted workflow. For each journey, record the entry point, expected service boundaries, queues or scheduled jobs, databases, third-party dependencies, and important success and failure branches.
Include at least one normal path, one expected error path, and one deliberately slow or retrying path. A map that contains only the happy path will miss the instrumentation needed during incidents.
2. Define the evidence required at each step
For every step, specify the signals that would let an engineer answer “what happened?” A useful minimum is:
- A trace span showing the operation and its parent-child relationship.
- Latency and outcome measurements, such as duration, success count, failure count, and retry count.
- A structured log or domain event when a decision, state transition, or exceptional condition needs explanatory detail.
- Selected attributes that identify the relevant tenant, operation type, or outcome without exposing secrets or unnecessary personal data.
Use consistent names and attributes. OpenTelemetry’s instrumentation documentation explains the relationship among traces, metrics, and logs and points to semantic conventions where applicable.
3. Mark the expected boundaries
Draw where context should cross an HTTP call, message publish, queue receive, scheduled job, worker thread, or process boundary. State which component creates a span and which component should continue it. This makes a broken propagation edge distinguishable from an uninstrumented function.

Step 1: Generate representative traffic
Use a test or staging environment whenever practical. Exercise the normal, error, and slow paths from the journey map. Use realistic payload shapes and dependency behavior, but remove production secrets. If a path is difficult to reproduce, capture the smallest safe fixture that still reaches the suspected operation.

Step 2: Confirm service identity and trace continuity
Follow each request through the backend. Check that the expected service name or resource identity is stable, that child spans have the correct parent, and that a new process or consumer continues the trace rather than starting an unrelated one. A trace that stops exactly at an async boundary is a propagation or consumer-instrumentation clue, not proof that the producer’s business code is missing instrumentation.
Step 3: Compare emitted evidence with the journey map
Look for a missing service segment, an unexplained gap between parent and child spans, a dependency that appears only on some paths, an error without exception context, or a business step represented only by generic framework work. Record the exact code path and traffic conditions for every suspected gap.
Step 4: Rule out delivery failures before editing code
Check SDK or agent initialization, service naming, endpoint configuration, credentials, network access, exporter and collector logs, backend ingestion, filters, and sampling. An instrumentation library can be present but fail during startup or export. A collector can receive data and drop it during processing. A backend can ingest data under an unexpected resource identity.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Step 5: Use automatic coverage for supported edges
Enable zero-code coverage for the frameworks, clients, databases, and queues your runtime supports. Treat the resulting topology as a baseline, not a business-logic inventory. Verify that automatic and manual instrumentation are initialized in a compatible way and that they do not create duplicate spans for the same operation.
Step 6: Add code-based signals around domain operations
Instrument the operations that carry meaning in your journey map: authorization decisions, pricing rules, inventory reservations, retry policies, state transitions, and model-assisted steps. Keep span names stable and low-cardinality. Record outcomes and durations, and capture exceptions at the boundary where they can be interpreted. Do not place passwords, access tokens, full payment data, or unrestricted user input in attributes or logs.
Step 7: Re-run the same traffic
Repeat the exact scenarios after each change. Confirm that the expected spans, metrics, and logs arrive in the backend, that parent-child relationships remain intact, and that errors are represented without leaking sensitive data. Microsoft’s Application Insights OpenTelemetry guidance likewise recommends running the application, generating traffic or log messages, and checking the portal; it notes that telemetry may take a few minutes to appear.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Step 8: Turn the map into a regression check
Keep a small set of representative journey tests and assertions about required telemetry. The assertion need not require an exact span count. It can require that a checkout trace contains a payment-decision operation, that a failed job records an exception, or that a queue consumer preserves trace context. Re-run these checks when framework, agent, collector, or service code changes.
Diagnose the symptom before changing instrumentation
| Observed symptom | Likely investigation path | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| No telemetry from a service | Initialization or delivery failure is more likely than a missing business span. | Inspect startup logs, service identity, endpoint, credentials, network access, exporter, collector, and backend ingestion. |
| Requests appear but internal work is opaque | Automatic instrumentation is covering the framework edge while application logic remains uninstrumented. | Add code-based spans or metrics around the domain operation and repeat the journey. |
| A trace stops at a service or async boundary | Context propagation or instrumentation on the receiving side may be broken. | Inspect propagation headers or message metadata and verify both producer and consumer. |
| Errors have no useful context | The exception may be caught without recording, or the relevant operation has no application boundary. | Record the exception and outcome with carefully selected, non-sensitive attributes. |
| Only some requests are visible | Sampling, filters, traffic differences, or conditional code paths may explain the pattern. | Inspect sampling configuration and compare captured requests with the journey scenarios. |
| Telemetry is grouped under the wrong service | Resource or service identity is inconsistent. | Verify identity configuration. In Application Insights, Microsoft notes that multiple services sharing one resource need Cloud Role Names for correct Application Map representation. |
These are investigation clues, not universal configuration rules. Names and settings differ by language, collector, and backend.
Use AI as a bounded reviewer, not an authority
An AI assistant is most useful when the question is constrained and evidence is supplied. Give it the language and framework versions, relevant source files, the journey map, representative traces or logs, current instrumentation conventions, and the telemetry backend’s resource model. Redact credentials, tokens, personal data, and proprietary material that the assistant does not need.
Ask for findings that can be verified
A productive request asks the assistant to:
- Identify operations in the journey map that have no corresponding span, metric, log, or event.
- Quote or locate the code path supporting each suspected finding.
- Distinguish automatic library coverage from application logic.
- Suggest the smallest OpenTelemetry change that would expose the operation.
- Explain expected parent-child relationships and context-propagation points.
- Flag attributes that could contain secrets or high-cardinality values.
- List assumptions and state what evidence would confirm or disprove each hypothesis.
For example:
Review these files against the attached checkout journey map and trace examples. For each suspected instrumentation gap, identify the function and branch, explain why existing automatic coverage would not show it, propose a minimal OpenTelemetry signal with a stable name, list safe attributes, and specify a test request that should make the signal appear. Do not claim a gap unless the code path and telemetry evidence support it.
Review generated changes like production code
Check imports, initialization order, parent context, error handling, naming, cardinality, sampling behavior, and privacy. Ensure the proposed span is created around the operation it describes rather than around an unrelated wrapper. Confirm that retries and loops do not create misleading names or unbounded attribute values. An engineer should approve and test every change; an assistant’s suggestion is a hypothesis until the resulting telemetry is observed.
Use AI to analyze telemetry patterns
Assistants can summarize repeated trace shapes, group errors, explain why a child span is absent on one branch, and draft queries for a backend. Supply the time window, sampling context, service identity, and known deployment changes. A conclusion based on a sampled or short-retention dataset cannot establish that an operation never emits telemetry.
Keep OpenTelemetry setup coherent across languages
Microsoft’s current Application Insights guidance documents Microsoft OpenTelemetry Distro packages for Python (microsoft-opentelemetry), Node.js (@microsoft/opentelemetry), and .NET (Microsoft.OpenTelemetry); Java uses agent or native-image instructions. Check the live guide for supported language versions and migration details because package support changes. Do not initialize both the Microsoft OpenTelemetry Distro and the Azure Monitor OpenTelemetry Distro in the same application. The authoritative setup and warning are in Microsoft’s OpenTelemetry enablement guide.

The package choice does not remove the need for a journey map. A correctly installed distro can export framework spans while still missing the business operation that explains a user-visible failure. Keep instrumentation and export choices separable where feasible: OpenTelemetry APIs and SDKs can emit portable signals, while collectors and backends handle processing, storage, querying, retention, and alerting.
Handle async work, retries, and errors deliberately
Asynchronous boundaries
When work moves to a queue or background worker, preserve trace context in the message metadata and verify that the consumer extracts it. A producer span alone cannot show what happened after enqueueing. Instrument consumer receipt, processing, acknowledgement, and failure handling. If a job is intentionally detached from the originating request, create a new trace and record a safe correlation identifier so operators can relate the two without pretending they share a parent.
Retries and fallbacks
Represent retries in a way that distinguishes the logical operation from each attempt. Capture the outcome and attempt number only when it is bounded and useful. A fallback branch should have a recognizable operation or outcome, otherwise a successful top-level request can conceal the fact that the primary dependency failed.
Exceptions and cancellations
Record exceptions where the application can add meaning, not only at a generic framework handler. Include the operation outcome and cancellation reason when safe. Avoid copying entire request bodies or exception messages into telemetry if they may contain personal or secret data.
Understand the limits of telemetry schemas and automatic discovery
Finding every possible signal is itself difficult because instrumentation can be embedded in application and library code. An OpenTelemetry specification proposal on Application Telemetry Schema, authored by Laurent Querel of F5, describes a possible direction for discoverability, CI/CD compatibility, and privacy checks. It labels the work a vision; its concepts and formats remain under discussion. Treat it as a proposal, not a mature standard or a universal inventory mechanism.
Today, a practical inventory is assembled from source review, runtime traces, metric and log definitions, collector configuration, and journey tests. AI can correlate those artifacts, but it cannot infer unexecuted paths or undisclosed business intent with certainty.
Choose a backend using the requirements that affect gap diagnosis
Do not choose a backend solely because it displays a service map. Compare the capabilities that determine whether a suspected gap can be confirmed:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- OpenTelemetry ingestion and support for the languages and signals you emit.
- Trace and log correlation, including async and cross-service context.
- Query and debugging workflow for following one journey across services.
- Retention, sampling controls, rehydration options, and access controls.
- Collector and pipeline integrations with your existing deployment.
- Alerting and dashboards for business outcomes as well as infrastructure symptoms.
- Cost behavior for your actual trace, metric, and log volume.
Google Cloud recommends vendor-neutral open-source instrumentation even when telemetry will be sent only to its platform, citing portability, standardized collection, and interoperable libraries. Its guidance is available at Observability for application developers. The practical implication is to keep emission and destination decisions as independent as your architecture permits.
A repeatable review checklist
- Critical journeys, dependencies, normal paths, failure paths, and slow paths are documented.
- Each journey step has an expected trace, metric, log, or domain-event signal.
- Automatic coverage is enabled only for supported libraries and runtime edges.
- Business operations have deliberate code-based instrumentation with stable names.
- Context propagation is tested across HTTP, queues, scheduled jobs, and worker boundaries.
- Initialization, service identity, exporters, collectors, credentials, filters, and sampling are verified.
- Errors and outcomes are recorded without sensitive or unbounded attributes.
- AI findings cite a concrete code path and an observable test, rather than asserting completeness.
- Representative traffic is replayed after changes and expected telemetry is confirmed in the backend.
- Journey-level telemetry checks run as regression tests when application or observability components change.
The result is not a promise that every line of code emits a span. It is a defensible statement that the operations required to diagnose important journeys produce the right evidence, reach the backend, and remain discoverable as the application evolves.
