Start by taking the worry seriously, then check whether it is disrupting your teen’s life or creating a safety concern. Climate distress can include anxiety, fear, anger, guilt, helplessness, hopelessness, and grief. The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) says these feelings are not, by themselves, a mental illness. They are understandable responses to a real and consequential problem. Professional help becomes important when the distress is overwhelming, persists, interferes with sleep, school or activities, removes enjoyment, or includes hopelessness or thoughts of self-harm.
You can support your teen now by listening without minimizing, helping them find trustworthy information, limiting media that leaves them overwhelmed, and supporting constructive action if they want it. If symptoms are severe, contact a clinician who works with children or adolescents. In the United States, call or text 988 if a young person is in crisis or thinking about suicide.
What climate distress can look like
A teen who says, “Nothing I do will matter,” may be expressing climate-related grief or helplessness rather than making a clinical diagnosis. AACAP uses terms such as climate distress, climate anxiety, and eco-anxiety for difficult feelings connected with climate change. The key question is not whether the concern is rational; it is whether the intensity, duration, and effects on daily life have become too much for the young person to manage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA normal response is still worth caring for
Do not dismiss the concern because climate change is a global issue that no single family can solve. A teen can be informed, frightened, angry, and still functioning normally. Listening and offering steady support may be all that is needed at first. Distress deserves attention even when it does not meet criteria for a mental disorder.

Climate impacts can affect mental health in different ways
Worry about news and future risks is only one pathway. AACAP notes that children and adolescents may also experience mental-health effects after direct exposure to extreme heat, air pollution, floods, wildfires, or forced migration. A teen who has lived through an event may need help with trauma, loss, displacement, or ongoing physical stress in addition to climate-related worry. Do not assume that every young person’s distress has the same cause or calls for the same intervention.
How common are these feelings?
Survey figures can help families understand that a teen is not alone, but they are not a diagnosis and should not be treated as a precise prevalence rate for all teenagers.
| Survey finding | How to interpret it |
|---|---|
| 59% of 16–25-year-olds in 10 countries were very or extremely worried about climate change; 45% said their feelings negatively affected daily life. | The age range includes young adults, so this is not a teen-only estimate. AACAP summarizes the international survey. |
| In a 2024 U.S. survey of nearly 16,000 people ages 16–25, 85% were at least moderately worried and 38% said their feelings affected daily functioning. | This sample also includes young adults. It should not be presented as the percentage of all U.S. teens with a mental-health condition. |
AACAP cautions that results vary with question wording. Use the numbers to open a conversation, not to label your child or compare one survey directly with another.

What to do in the first conversation
The first goal is connection, not a perfectly reassuring answer. AACAP advises adults to be curious, validate the concern, and avoid minimizing it with reflexive reassurance.
- Choose a calm moment. A car ride, walk, or other low-pressure setting can feel less confrontational than a formal sit-down. If your teen raises the subject during a crisis, stay with the immediate feeling rather than postponing it.
- Ask open questions. Try, “What part of climate change feels most frightening?” or “When does the worry get strongest?” Follow the teen’s answer instead of assuming the problem is school, social media, disasters, or the future.
- Reflect what you heard. Say, “It makes sense that seeing those fires would feel frightening,” or “You sound exhausted by carrying this.” Validation recognizes the feeling; it does not require agreeing with every prediction or abandoning perspective.
- Avoid quick dismissal. Statements such as “Don’t worry,” “You are too young to think about that,” or “Technology will fix it” can make a teen stop talking. Reassurance is more useful after you understand the specific fear and have discussed a realistic next step.
- Ask about functioning and safety. Gently find out how the worry is affecting sleep, concentration, attendance, friendships, activities, appetite, and enjoyment. Ask directly whether your teen has felt hopeless or thought about self-harm. A direct question does not create suicidal thoughts; it identifies when urgent help is needed.
- Agree on one next step. That might be checking a trustworthy source together, taking a break from a feed, contacting a clinician, or making a plan for the next difficult night.
Keep the conversation ongoing. A single discussion cannot reveal whether distress is passing, escalating, or linked to an event your teen has not yet described.

Recognizing when professional help is needed
AACAP recommends connecting with treatment when climate-related distress is severe or interferes with functioning. Warning signs indicate a need for professional assessment; they do not establish a diagnosis.
- Persistent trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or getting enough rest.
- Difficulty attending, concentrating, or participating at school.
- Withdrawing from sports, hobbies, friends, or other activities.
- Inability to find enjoyment in things that used to matter.
- Hopelessness, especially statements that the future is pointless or nothing can improve.
- Panic attacks, escalating anxiety, obsessive thinking, or constant checking for climate news.
- Unusual fatigue or a noticeable decline in everyday functioning.
- Any thoughts, plans, or urges related to self-harm or suicide.
Consider the pattern rather than one isolated evening. A frightening headline may cause a short-lived reaction; a sustained change in behavior, sleep, or safety requires more support. If you are unsure, calling a qualified clinician or the teen’s primary-care office for guidance is reasonable.

Where to look for a clinician
Use AACAP’s child and adolescent psychiatrist locator
AACAP’s family resource includes a “Find a child and adolescent psychiatrist” locator. Child and adolescent psychiatrists are physicians who complete medical school, residency training, and additional specialty training in child and adolescent psychiatry. A locator can help you identify possible professionals, but you still need to confirm current availability, location, payment arrangements, and whether a particular doctor is accepting new patients.
Ask existing health and school contacts
Your teen’s pediatrician or family doctor can help identify local mental-health services and consider physical factors that may worsen sleep, fatigue, or anxiety. A school counselor, school psychologist, or student-support office may explain what services are available at school and how confidentiality works. These contacts are starting points, not substitutes for emergency care when safety is at risk.
Use climate-focused coverage as context, not a directory
Recent American Psychological Association coverage describes clinicians incorporating climate anxiety into practice and youth-oriented support. That coverage shows that some professionals are addressing the concern; it is not a vetted clinician directory and does not establish that every therapist has specialized training. Treat any advertised expertise as something to verify directly.

How to judge whether a clinician is a good fit
AACAP emphasizes finding a comfortable match among the teen, family, and clinician. The first professional you contact may not be the right one. During a call or initial appointment, ask questions that make the fit visible.

| Do you regularly work with children or adolescents? | Whether the clinician’s routine practice matches your teen’s developmental stage. |
| Have you worked with climate-related distress, disaster exposure, or environmental grief? | Whether the clinician understands the concern your teen is bringing, without assuming a particular diagnosis. |
| How will my teen participate in decisions about care? | Whether the young person will be listened to and included rather than discussed only with adults. |
| How do you involve parents or caregivers? | What information will be shared, how family support will work, and how the teen’s privacy is handled. |
| What happens if symptoms become urgent between appointments? | Whether there is a clear process for escalation and crisis support. |
| Are you accepting new patients, and what are the location, schedule, and payment details? | Whether the arrangement is practical and sustainable for your family. |
| Does my teen feel heard and reasonably comfortable? | The most important lived test of the relationship. A technically qualified clinician may still be a poor match if the teen cannot speak openly. |
These are practical questions for families, not an AACAP checklist or an endorsement of one therapy method. Do not promise your teen that the first appointment will solve everything; describe it as a chance to decide whether the relationship feels useful.
What to tell the clinician before the first visit
Write down when the concern began, what seems to trigger it, and what has changed. Include sleep, school attendance, concentration, appetite, friendships, activities, panic symptoms, repetitive checking, direct exposure to a climate event, and any statements about hopelessness or self-harm. Note current medicines or medical conditions if relevant. Ask your teen what they want the clinician to know and what they are worried will happen in treatment.
Bring examples rather than a general label. “Checks wildfire maps every hour and has stopped soccer” gives a clinician more useful information than “has eco-anxiety.” If the teen refuses to attend, ask the professional how to begin safely; do not use a private conversation as a threat or punishment.
Helping while you wait for an appointment
Make information trustworthy and proportionate
Offer age-appropriate information from sources with transparent expertise. Read or watch it together when possible, pause to ask what your teen thinks, and distinguish current facts from predictions or opinion. A stream of alarming content is not the same as preparation. Agree on times to check news and notifications so that information does not occupy every hour.

Notice when media use stops helping
AACAP warns that doomscrolling can increase overwhelm without functioning as constructive action. Look for a cycle in which your teen feels compelled to check updates, becomes more frightened, and still cannot stop. Suggest a specific alternative: turn off alerts overnight, move climate accounts out of the main feed, or choose one reliable update at a planned time. Frame this as protecting attention and sleep, not as avoiding reality.
Support action only if the teen wants it
Some young people feel less helpless when they work with peers or participate in community efforts. AACAP says collective action can make climate distress less impairing. Ask what kind of involvement feels meaningful and sustainable, then help with practical limits such as time, transportation, school responsibilities, and rest. Action is an option, not a cure and not a moral obligation. A teen who needs a break should not be made to feel guilty for taking one.
Model coping without pretending certainty
Adults can acknowledge that climate change is serious while demonstrating routines that preserve sleep, relationships, movement, and ordinary enjoyment. You might say, “I am worried too, and I am going to focus on what we can do today.” Do not make promises about an outcome no one can guarantee. Calm, honest presence is more credible than forced optimism.

If your teen may act on thoughts of suicide or self-harm, cannot stay safe, or is in immediate danger, treat it as an emergency. Stay with the young person when possible, reduce access to lethal means, and tell another trusted adult who can help maintain safety.

Situations that deserve extra context
After a flood, wildfire, heat event, or evacuation
Ask about what your teen directly experienced, what was lost, and whether reminders are causing fear, avoidance, or sleep problems. A clinician can assess the full picture instead of treating every reaction as abstract climate anxiety. Practical needs such as housing, school disruption, medical care, and family displacement may be part of the mental-health plan.
When the family disagrees about climate change
Your teen does not need every family member to share identical views in order to deserve support. Keep the focus on the young person’s feelings and functioning. Avoid turning appointments into debates or asking the teen to defend scientific claims before receiving care.
When privacy is a concern
Before the first session, ask the clinician to explain confidentiality and its safety exceptions in language your teen understands. Rules differ by location, age, and service setting. Knowing what can remain private and what must be shared when there is a safety risk makes honest conversation more likely.
A practical plan for the next seven days
- Today: Have a short, nonjudgmental conversation and ask about sleep, functioning, hopelessness, and self-harm.
- Within two days: Reduce media patterns that clearly intensify panic, and identify one trustworthy source to consult together.
- Within the week: Contact the pediatrician, school support office, or AACAP psychiatrist locator. Record questions about adolescent experience, climate-related concerns, access, and payment.
- Before the appointment: Track triggers and changes in behavior without monitoring your teen in a way that feels punitive. Invite them to name what they want from care.
- At every stage: If safety changes, stop the routine plan and use crisis or emergency services.
AACAP’s family resource puts the priority plainly: “Getting help is the most important thing that parents can do for children and adolescents with a mental health concern.” Seeking an assessment does not label your teen or deny the reality of climate change. It gives the young person and family a place to understand the distress, protect daily functioning, and decide what support fits.
