Use an employer’s own careers page or a recognized government job resource as your starting point, then verify the exact opening and recruiter before sharing personal information. A listing on a familiar job site, a polished website, or a message using a real company’s name is not proof that the offer is genuine.
This US-focused guide gives you a repeatable check for remote openings, explains the main work-from-home scam patterns, and shows what to do if you have already sent information or money.
Start with sources that can be checked independently
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) identifies three useful starting points for US job seekers: USAJobs.gov for federal openings, CareerOneStop (sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor), and USA.gov for links to state and local government job sites. These services are starting points, not a guarantee that every listing elsewhere is safe. You still need to verify the employer, role and contact person.
| Starting point | Best use | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| USAJobs.gov | Finding US federal positions and their official application paths | That a recruiter who contacts you separately represents the agency |
| CareerOneStop | Exploring occupations, training and job-search resources supported by the US Department of Labor | That an opening copied onto another site is authentic |
| USA.gov | Reaching official state and local government employment sites | That a message using a government-looking logo or address is genuine |
| An employer’s official careers page | Confirming the role, eligibility, duties and application route | That every person claiming to recruit for the employer is authorized |
If you live outside the United States, use your national or regional labor authority and the employer’s official careers page. Reporting channels and employment rules differ by country; do not assume US resources or procedures apply.
Verify the exact opening on the employer’s website
Scammers often hijack a real company’s identity, reuse an old advertisement or alter a legitimate listing before posting it on a job site or social network. Verification must be tied to the specific vacancy, not merely to the company name.

- Find the company independently. Type the organization’s name into your browser or use a source you already trust. Do not rely on the link in an unsolicited message.
- Navigate to the careers section. Look for the same job title, department, duties, location eligibility (such as “US remote” or specified states), pay information and application instructions.
- Compare the application route. A genuine posting should direct you to an employer-controlled page or a clearly identified hiring system. A different email address, phone number or payment instruction is a material discrepancy.
- Ask the organization through independently obtained contact details. Use the phone number, contact form or recruiting address published on the official site. Ask whether the role and recruiter are real; do not use contact details supplied only by the suspicious message.
If the role is missing, has materially different duties or lists a different way to apply, pause. An absent listing is not automatic proof of fraud—jobs can close or be restricted by region—but it means the sender has not been verified. Confirm with the organization before proceeding.
Keep a record of what you compared. Save the listing URL, the date you saw it, the stated pay, location rules, recruiter name, sender address and application instructions. A scammer can edit or remove an advertisement after contacting you, while your notes preserve the claims you need to check with the employer.
Check the recruiter, not just the company
A real company name does not authenticate an individual recruiter. FTC guidance recommends researching both names and checking how the person contacted you.
Research names as clues, not verdicts
Search the recruiter’s name and the company’s name with terms such as scam, review or complaint. Search results can contain inaccurate complaints or miss a new scam, so use them to identify questions for the employer rather than as conclusive proof. Also check whether the recruiter’s job title and contact information appear on the employer’s official site or a verifiable professional profile.
Search the staffing agency too, if one is named. Ask the employer whether that agency is authorized for the particular vacancy, rather than assuming that an agency with a genuine website is connected to the offer. A scammer can copy an agency’s branding just as easily as a company’s.
Inspect the message and sender address
A personal email account, a newly created domain, an unexpected generic message or pressure to move immediately to a chat app deserves investigation. None of these signs alone proves fraud; legitimate recruiters sometimes use outside agencies or unusual systems. Confirm the person through a contact path you obtained independently, and do not call a number included only in the original message.
Look for consistency rather than perfect spelling or logos. The sender’s domain, signature, stated department, job title, interview instructions and links should make sense together and match information on the employer’s site. A polished message can still be an impersonation, while a minor typo is not conclusive evidence by itself.

Expect a real hiring process before sensitive data
Be cautious when someone asks for your Social Security number, driver’s-license information, bank details or tax forms before a genuine interview and documented hiring process. Employers may need some information after you are hired, but an unsolicited request before you can verify the role is a reason to stop and confirm.
Ask what stage of hiring requires the information, which official system will collect it and who will have access. If the answer is vague, the request arrives before any meaningful evaluation, or the sender insists on receiving documents by ordinary email or chat, do not proceed until the employer independently confirms the process.
Recognize the main remote-work scam patterns
Hijacked or impersonated job listings
A scammer may copy a known employer’s name, modify an old advertisement or post a false “remote position” on a job site. The branding can be accurate while the contact person and application are fake. Check the employer’s current careers page and independently confirm any discrepancy.
Recommended Free Tools
Fake recruiters and rushed offers
Some messages promise a job with little or no interview, insist that you decide immediately, or ask for personal and financial information before the employer has evaluated you. A polished invitation, a familiar logo or a convincing signature does not establish identity. Slow the process down and verify the recruiter through the employer.
Urgency is especially important when it prevents ordinary checks: a deadline to accept within hours, a demand to keep the offer secret, or instructions to communicate only through one unverified account. You can tell the sender that you will respond after confirming the opening through the organization’s official website. A legitimate employer should not require you to bypass basic identity checks.
Fake checks and equipment purchases
A scammer may send a check for equipment, software or an “overpayment” and instruct you to buy items, send money to another account or return the difference. The check can appear to clear and later be reversed, leaving you responsible for funds you forwarded. The FTC’s Consumer Advice alert “How to avoid work-from-home job scams” (June 2025) states: “No honest potential employer will ever send you a check and then tell you to send on part of the money, or to buy gift cards with it.” Do not deposit a check and transfer money based on instructions from an unverified contact.
Do not treat a bank balance that temporarily increases as proof that a check is genuine. Ask your bank for guidance before using any funds, and never send an “overpayment,” buy gift cards or purchase equipment from your own money on the sender’s instructions.

Task scams and deposits to unlock earnings
Unexpected messages may advertise easy online “optimization” or “product boosting” work. An app or website displays supposed commissions, then demands a deposit—often in cryptocurrency—to continue tasks or withdraw the balance. The FTC says those displayed earnings are not real. You should never pay personal funds to release wages or commissions.
These schemes can begin with a small payment or a simple set of tasks, then show a larger balance and claim that one more deposit, tax or fee is needed. The displayed account balance is controlled by the scammer, not evidence that you earned money. Stop before sending cryptocurrency or connecting a bank account to the platform.
The FTC reported about $41 million in cryptocurrency losses to job scams in the first half of 2024, compared with about $21 million in all of 2023. Those figures cover the FTC’s reported historical periods and cryptocurrency losses only; they are not totals for every job scam or current annual losses.
Use a before-you-share verification workflow
Run these checks in order. Stop at any step that cannot be independently confirmed.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Record the offer. Save the listing, sender address, phone numbers, names, stated pay, duties, location rules and requested next steps. Screenshots preserve details that may later disappear.
- Locate the employer independently. Open the official website without using links in the message. Check its careers section and any fraud-warning or recruiting-contact information.
- Match the vacancy. Compare title, team, duties, work location, eligible states or countries, pay range and interview steps. Treat mismatches as unresolved until the employer explains them.
- Validate the recruiter. Ask the organization, through an independently found channel, whether the named person and staffing agency are authorized for that role.
- Confirm the interview and offer process. A legitimate employer should be able to explain who interviews you, how decisions are made and which official system handles paperwork. Do not treat a text-only conversation or instant offer as sufficient verification.
- Protect your information. Provide only information appropriate to the verified stage of hiring. Do not send identity documents, banking details or tax information to an unverified contact.
- Reject any payment request. Refuse application fees, deposits, gift-card purchases, cryptocurrency transfers, equipment checks and requests to forward money. A job should pay you; it should not require your personal funds to unlock pay.
- Recheck before signing. If the offer changes its pay, duties, location or payment instructions, return to the employer’s official site and confirm the new details before accepting.
Use a pause rule when you feel pressured: do not click, deposit, pay or upload anything until the employer confirms the role through a channel you found yourself. A short delay is safer than trying to recover money or identity information later.
Compare an opening using four decision axes
Do not rank job boards as if one platform guarantees safety. Evaluate each listing against the same four questions:
| Axis | Stronger evidence | Warning condition |
|---|---|---|
| Official-site presence | The same current role appears on the employer’s careers page with a consistent application route | The role is absent, obsolete, materially altered or reachable only through the message |
| Recruiter identity | The employer independently confirms the person or agency and the sender’s details are consistent | The sender cannot be confirmed, uses unexplained personal contact details or refuses independent verification |
| Specific, consistent process | Duties, location eligibility, pay and interview stages are clear and remain consistent | Vague work, unusually high pay for little effort, urgency or changing instructions |
| Financial and data demands | No payment is required and sensitive data is requested only through a verified hiring process | Fees, deposits, onward transfers, cryptocurrency, gift cards or early requests for identity and banking data |
One strong signal cannot cancel a serious warning. For example, a genuine-looking careers page does not make an unverified recruiter safe, and a professional video call does not justify a request to deposit a check or pay cryptocurrency. Consider the entire process and resolve contradictions before continuing.

Handle suspicious contact safely
If you have not sent money or sensitive information
- Stop replying through the suspicious channel.
- Do not click additional links, download attachments or install software requested by the sender.
- Save the messages and listing details for reporting.
- Contact the employer using its official website if you want to verify the impersonation.
- Block or report the account on the service where the contact began.
If you sent personal information
Stop further communication and tell the legitimate organization whose identity was used. Change passwords that you shared or reused, enable multifactor authentication where available, and monitor financial and identity accounts for unfamiliar activity. Contact the relevant bank or card issuer if account details were exposed and follow its fraud instructions.

Contact the payment provider immediately and ask whether the transaction can be stopped or reversed. The sooner you report a transfer, card payment, wire, cryptocurrency transaction or mailed check, the more options the provider may have, although recovery is not guaranteed. Keep transaction records and all messages.
Report the incident
Report job scams to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. The FTC also identifies state attorneys general as a reporting route. Include the employer name being impersonated, recruiter details, payment instructions, dates and copies of messages. Reporting helps authorities connect related complaints even when an individual loss cannot be recovered.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Questions that should change your decision
Before continuing, you should be able to answer these questions without relying on the recruiter’s claims:
- Can I see this exact role on the employer’s current official careers page?
- Does the employer confirm this recruiter and the stated application process through contact details I found independently?
- Are the work location, eligibility, duties, compensation and interview stages specific and internally consistent?
- Has anyone asked me to pay, deposit, forward or convert money, or to buy equipment or gift cards?
- Am I being asked for sensitive information before a real interview and verified hiring process?
A “no” to the first two questions leaves the job unverified. A “yes” to any payment demand or premature sensitive-data request is a reason to stop, regardless of how professional the listing appears.
How legitimate remote hiring usually differs
Remote work itself is not a special exemption from ordinary hiring safeguards. A credible process identifies the employing organization, explains the job and location rules, provides a way to speak with representatives and does not require you to risk personal money. The precise sequence varies by employer, but the identity, role and payment facts should remain checkable from sources outside the original message.
Use “remote position,” “optimization” and “product boosting” only as examples of wording that appears in FTC scam warnings. These phrases are not magic search terms: their presence does not prove fraud, and their absence does not prove legitimacy. Context and independent verification matter.

Bottom line: verify before you trust
Find remote openings through an employer’s official careers page, USAJobs.gov, CareerOneStop or USA.gov, then independently confirm the exact job and recruiter. Treat urgency, unusually high pay for little work, vague duties, early requests for sensitive information, fake-check instructions and deposits for online tasks as stop signs. Never pay to get a job or forward money from an employer’s check. If you are targeted, stop communicating, contact the payment provider immediately when money was sent, and report the incident to ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a remote job on a well-known job board automatically legitimate?
No. The FTC warns that scammers can hijack real employers’ names, reuse old advertisements and post false listings on employment sites or social media. Find the employer independently and verify the exact role on its official careers page.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat should I do if the job is not listed on the employer’s website?
Pause and treat the offer as unverified. Jobs can close or be limited by region, so absence alone is not conclusive proof of fraud. Contact the organization through a phone number, contact form or recruiting address published on its official site and ask whether the role and recruiter are real.
When is it reasonable for an employer to request my Social Security number or bank details?
Be cautious when such information is requested before a genuine interview and documented hiring process. Ask what stage requires it and which verified employer system will collect it. Do not send identity, banking or tax information to an unverified contact.
Can I deposit a check for home-office equipment if the money appears in my account?
Do not forward money, buy gift cards or purchase equipment on the sender’s instructions. A fake check can appear to clear and later be reversed, leaving you responsible for funds sent onward. The FTC says an honest potential employer will not send a check and tell you to send part of the money.
What are optimization or product-boosting jobs?
They are phrases used in FTC warnings about task scams. An unexpected message may promise easy online tasks, display fake commissions and then demand a deposit—often cryptocurrency—to continue or withdraw earnings. The supposed earnings are not real, so never pay personal funds to unlock them.
Where should I report a remote-job scam?
Report it to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov; state attorneys general are another route identified by the FTC. If money was sent, contact the payment provider immediately and ask whether the transaction can be stopped or reversed. Preserve messages, transaction records and listing details.
The Bottom Line
Verify the exact remote opening and recruiter through independently found official channels. Never pay to get paid, forward money from an employer’s check or provide sensitive data before a genuine hiring process. If targeted, stop communicating, contact the payment provider promptly and report the incident to ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
