You can find discounted PC games without relying on a questionable key seller: start with the game publisher’s store or a retailer the publisher identifies as authorized for your country, then compare the same edition and platform across those stores. A key sold outside Steam is not automatically unauthorized, but its authorization, region compatibility, and refund route depend on the publisher, product, and seller.
Where can I buy PC games cheap without getting scammed?
Check the publisher’s own store and its current list of approved digital distributors for the specific game and your region. Authorized retailers can sell publisher-approved game keys at a discount; a third-party key is not automatically illegitimate simply because it is not sold through Steam.
Retailer approval is not universal. EA’s current guidance names Epic Games, Humble Bundle, and Valve/Steam among worldwide trusted online retailers for EA PC digital games and premium currencies, and names Amazon storefronts in selected countries. That list applies to EA products covered by its guidance—not every game or every product sold by those retailers. See EA’s trusted retailer guidance.

Ubisoft recommends buying its content from Ubisoft Store or Ubisoft Connect PC, or from a company with a digital distribution agreement. Its approved-distributor list should be checked for the particular game and location; Ubisoft also recommends buying from digital retailers within your own country or region. How to compare a game deal before checkout
- Verify authorization. Find the game publisher’s current retailer guidance and confirm the store is approved for that publisher’s products in your country. A retailer’s general reputation does not establish authorization for every publisher.
- Match the product. Confirm the exact edition, included content, language, activation platform, and region restrictions. Two listings with the same game title may not provide the same product or work in the same location.
- Compare the total price. Check several trusted stores and compare the amount due at checkout, not just the headline price. An unusually low price is a reason to check the seller and listing more carefully, not proof by itself that the offer is unsafe.
- Inspect the seller and checkout. Look for a clear business identity, contact information, refund policy, and secure payment process. Microsoft’s general safer-shopping guidance recommends using trusted resellers, checking seller details, and keeping order records; it is general software-shopping advice, not a game publisher’s authorization list. - Read the remedy terms. Establish who handles support and what the retailer offers if the key is invalid, the wrong product, or revoked. A third-party purchase may not qualify for the platform store’s refund process.
Why unauthorized keys can cause problems
Publisher warnings identify several risks: a key may be fake, used, stolen, invalid, for the wrong game or language, or later disabled or revoked. A buyer may also encounter phishing or have no support from the publisher for a purchase made through an unauthorized retailer. EA describes these risks for its products, while Ubisoft warns that invalid or illegally obtained keys may be revoked.
These are reasons to verify the source, not a basis for assuming every discounted key is unsafe. The useful distinction is whether the seller is authorized for the specific publisher’s product and whether the listing clearly states what you are buying.

What happens if a third-party Steam key fails?
Steam distinguishes purchases made on the Steam Store from keys bought elsewhere. Valve’s policy generally allows a refund request for a game bought through Steam within 14 days of purchase if it has been played for less than two hours, subject to policy terms and exceptions. Valve cannot refund third-party purchases such as CD keys or Steam Wallet cards bought outside Steam. Review the current Steam Refunds policy and the retailer’s own terms before buying.
If a third-party key is revoked, Steam’s guidance is to contact the seller to request a refund. If a retail or digital game is intended to be registered through Steam, its packaging or delivery email should say so; for a key that never successfully registered, Steam directs buyers to contact the retailer for a replacement copy. What to do if a key is invalid or revoked
- Save the order page, receipt, confirmation email, and any messages with the seller.
- Contact the retailer that sold the key and explain whether it was invalid, for the wrong product, or revoked. Ask about a replacement or refund under its policy.
- If the key was meant for Steam, use Steam’s relevant support guidance, while recognizing that Valve does not refund an externally purchased key.
- Do not share account credentials or payment details in response to an unexpected message claiming to fix the key.
A quick decision rule
- Good candidate: The publisher lists the retailer for the relevant product and region, the listing matches your platform and edition, and the seller explains support and refunds.
- Pause and verify: The price is far below other trusted offers, the seller identity or contact details are unclear, or the listing does not clearly specify region, language, edition, or activation platform.
- Choose another offer: You cannot establish publisher authorization or understand the seller’s remedy if the key does not work.
