Find a Steam demo by searching the Store for the game title and “demo,” then open the game’s store page and select its demo offer. Install it with the page’s install or play control, monitor the job in Steam’s Download Manager, and remove it from Library with right-click the demo > Manage > Uninstall. If a demo seems to have disappeared, check the signed-in account, Library filters, View > Hidden Games, and the Steam library drive before reinstalling it.
Where Steam demos appear
A demo is distributed through the same Steam Store and Library system used for games, but it may have its own store entry or an offer embedded on the full game’s page. Availability is controlled by the publisher and can change, so a demo you saw previously may no longer be listed. The current store page is the authoritative place to check whether the demo can still be obtained.
Search the Store first
- Open the Steam Store in the Steam client or a browser.
- Search for the exact game title followed by demo. For example, search for
Example Game demorather than only the game name. - Open the game’s official store page and look for a clearly labeled demo offer or a button that starts the demo download.
- Read the store page’s operating-system support, download size, required disk space, controller information, accessibility details, and any statement about transferring progress to the full game before installing.
Those specifications are publisher- and version-dependent. Do not assume that a demo supports the same operating systems, controllers, save behavior, or accessibility options as the paid release.
Look in Library when you already claimed the demo
If you previously added a demo to your account, it may already be in Library even when a Store search is inconvenient. Confirm that Steam is signed in to the account that originally added it, then review the Library filters. An incorrect filter can hide a title from the normal list.

Steam also has a separate hidden-games list. In the desktop client, choose View > Hidden Games. If the demo is there, right-click it, choose Manage, and select Remove from Hidden. Steam describes this command as the way to return an item to the normal Library list.
How to install a Steam demo
Install from the demo’s store page
- Open the demo offer on the game’s Steam Store page.
- Select the page’s Install or Play control. Steam may use slightly different wording depending on whether the demo is already associated with your account.
- When Steam asks for a library location, select an existing Steam Library folder or choose the option to create or add one on another drive.
- Accept the download prompt. Steam places the job in its download queue.
- Open the client’s Download Manager to see progress, queue order, disk activity, and available update controls. Steam says downloads and updates can all be managed there.
- Wait for the download and installation stages to finish. A demo is ready when Steam’s Library control changes to the normal launch state.
Keep enough free space for the size shown on the current store page. The download amount and installed footprint can differ, so use the page’s disk-space requirement rather than estimating from the compressed download alone.
Install from Library
If the demo is already listed in Library, select it and use its install control. Steam will ask where to place it if more than one library location is available. The same Download Manager queue applies whether installation began from the Store or Library.

Choose another drive
Steam Library folders can be created on additional drives. This is useful when the default drive lacks space or when you keep games on a larger internal or external disk.
- Open Steam’s storage management screen and use the control to add a library folder on the desired drive.
- Return to the demo’s install prompt and select that library location.
- Confirm the destination and watch the Download Manager for the new job.
If the demo is already installed, you can move it without downloading again: in Library, right-click the demo, choose Properties > Installed Files > Move Install Folder, select the destination library, and confirm. Steam performs the move and then updates the Library record.
Launch and manage the installed demo
Start the demo
When installation completes, open Library and select the demo’s Play control. The first launch may create local configuration or save data. If the demo does not appear after installation, return to the missing-demo checks rather than starting another download immediately.

Control queue order and updates
The Download Manager is the central place to pause or resume a job, see which item is currently active, reorder pending downloads, and review update activity. If several games are queued, move the demo higher in the list when you need it installed first. Leave Steam running until the queue reports completion.

Understand demo saves and full-game progress
Do not assume that progress, settings, or save files transfer to the full game. Whether progress carries over is a publisher decision and can vary by demo version. Check the demo’s current store listing or publisher notes for an explicit statement before investing time on the assumption that a purchase will continue the same save.
How to uninstall a Steam demo
Remove only the local demo files
- Open Steam Library.
- Find the demo. If it is not visible, clear the Library filters and check View > Hidden Games.
- Right-click the demo and choose Manage.
- Select Uninstall and confirm.
This standard path removes the demo’s local installation from the selected Steam Library. It does not require removing Steam or deleting your entire library.
Do not uninstall Steam itself by mistake
Uninstalling the Steam application is a different operation. Steam warns that removing Steam can delete installed game content unless the steamapps folder is moved or backed up first. Use the demo’s Library menu when your goal is only to reclaim the demo’s disk space.
Reinstall later
If the demo remains available on its store page or in your account Library, select its install control again and choose a library location. If the publisher has withdrawn the demo, the previous local uninstall may leave no current download option; availability is controlled by the store listing.

Check the account
Steam’s support guidance identifies the wrong account as a common reason for a missing game. Open the account menu and verify that you are signed in to the account that added the demo. A family member’s or second account’s library will not necessarily show the same demo.

Clear filters
In Library, inspect the active collections, categories, platform filters, and search text. Remove restrictive filters and search for the exact demo title. A demo can be installed but absent from a narrowed view.
Restore a hidden demo
Choose View > Hidden Games. Right-click the demo, select Manage, and choose Remove from Hidden. Return to the normal Library view and search again.
Check whether it was uninstalled
If Library shows the demo but labels it uninstalled, confirm that the library folder containing it still exists and that the drive is connected and mounted. A disconnected secondary drive can make installed content appear unavailable.

Steam can lose track of a library when its drive letter, mount point, or connection changes. Use Steam’s Storage Manager and add the existing library folder with the + button. After Steam registers that location, existing games in the folder should appear in Library again.
- Reconnect or mount the drive that contains the demo.
- Open Steam’s Storage Manager.
- Use the + button to add the drive’s existing Steam Library folder.
- Wait while Steam scans the location.
- Return to Library and check the demo’s status.
If the files are incomplete or the folder no longer contains the demo, Steam may still require a fresh installation. Do not delete the folder while troubleshooting; first establish whether Steam can reattach it.
Fix a demo that will not download or install
Work through these checks in order. Test the download after each major change so you know which action resolved the problem.

Restart Steam and the computer
Exit Steam completely, start it again, and retry the download. If the queue still fails, restart the computer. This clears temporary client and operating-system states without changing the demo’s store availability.

Use Steam’s Clear Download Cache command. Steam explains that this flushes locally cached configuration data and acquires it from Steam’s servers again. Clearing the cache can sign you out, so have the account credentials available and allow Steam to rebuild the queue before retrying.
Repair the library folder
Use Steam’s library-folder repair command for the destination library, then retry the installation. This addresses permission or folder-state problems that prevent Steam from writing files.
Verify local files when Steam offers the option
For a partially installed demo, open its Library properties and use the available local-file verification command. Steam compares the local installation with the expected files and reacquires damaged or missing data when supported.
Try another Download Region
Change Steam’s download region and retry. A regional content server can be temporarily unavailable or slow even when the rest of Steam works. Restore your usual region after testing if the alternate region does not help.

Firewall, antivirus, endpoint-security, disk-monitoring, and similar software can interfere with Steam’s network or disk operations. Check their event logs and allow Steam and its game-install processes where appropriate. Do not disable security permanently; make the smallest temporary change needed to identify interference, then restore protection.

Check space and destination access
Confirm that the selected drive has the free space shown by the store page and that you can still access the Steam Library folder. If the drive is full, add another library folder or move an existing installation through Properties > Installed Files > Move Install Folder before starting the demo again.

Steam’s Remote Downloads feature can start a download from the web Games list or the Steam Mobile app. For it to work, the Steam client must be left running and signed in on the home PC or Mac.
- Leave Steam running and signed in on the computer that will store the demo.
- Open the web Games list or Steam Mobile app while signed in to the same account.
- Choose the demo and start its download remotely.
- When you return to the computer, open the Download Manager to confirm the queue and installation status.
Use remote downloads only on a private, secured computer. Leaving an account signed in on a shared or publicly accessible machine exposes the library and download controls to other users.
How to compare two Steam demos
Demo quality and compatibility are not uniform. Compare the current store listings rather than relying on an old recommendation or assuming that two demos from the same publisher behave alike.

These values can change with a publisher update, so record the details relevant to your decision from the current listing. Steam does not publish a universal demo size, retention period, or progress-transfer rule.
