The safest way to find an indie app on an iPhone is to start in the App Store, inspect the developer and privacy disclosures, and install it through the channel that officially supports your country or region. Apple’s alternative distribution options are not worldwide: alternative marketplaces are documented for eligible users in Brazil, Japan, and the European Union, while direct website distribution is documented for eligible users in the EU.
Use the App Store for most discoveries. Consider an alternative marketplace or a developer’s website only when it is available to you, you understand who supports the app, and you accept that updates can depend on that marketplace or distributor remaining authorized and operational.
What “indie app” means on iPhone
“Indie app” generally describes software made by an independent developer or a small studio rather than a large technology company. It is a description of the creator, not a separate iPhone app category. An independent app can be listed in the App Store, offered through an eligible alternative marketplace, or—under Apple’s documented rules—distributed directly from a developer’s website in the EU.
Do not assume that an app is safer, more private, or unavailable in the App Store merely because its creator calls it independent. Evaluate the app itself, its developer, its support options, and its distribution channel.

Find indie apps in the App Store
1. Search for the job you want done
Open the App Store and search with the problem or subject you care about: a writing tool, a field-recording app, a niche game, a budgeting utility, or another specific need. Search results are usually more useful when they describe the task instead of using only the word “indie.”
You can also browse the App Store’s tabs, editorial stories, and themed collections. Apple says its editorial team may feature independent developers, but featuring is curated and localized. It is not a complete directory of every independent iPhone app, and what appears can differ by country, region, device, and time.
2. Follow a developer’s other work
When you find a promising app, tap the developer name on its product page. This can reveal other apps from the same creator and helps you distinguish an established small studio from an unrelated app using a similar name. If the developer lists an official website or support page, open it from the product page rather than relying on an unverified directory.

Keep a short list of apps that meet your needs, then compare their product pages. A promising icon or editorial mention is only a starting point. Check the details below before you authorize a download.
Check an app before you install it
Confirm the developer and support route
Read the developer name exactly as shown on the product page. Open the support link and privacy-policy link, if provided, and make sure they lead to a real way to contact the creator or report a problem. A small developer may offer email support rather than a phone line; what matters is that the route is clear and maintained.

Read the description and screenshots critically
Look for the functions you actually need, supported iPhone features, subscription or purchase wording, and any limits on the free version. Screenshots illustrate a selected workflow; they do not prove that every feature is included in the current release. Check the version history for signs that the app is still maintained and whether recent updates address issues relevant to you.
Use ratings and reviews as signals, not proof
Ratings summarize other users’ experiences, while individual reviews can reveal recurring crashes, missing features, aggressive prompts, or responsive support. Look for patterns across recent reviews instead of treating one enthusiastic or angry comment as decisive. Reviews cannot establish that an app fits your privacy, accessibility, or workflow requirements.

Check age rating and compatibility details
Review the age rating and content descriptors before installing, especially on a family phone. Confirm that the app supports your iPhone and any device features it needs. Apple’s product page supplies the app information available for that listing; do not infer compatibility from screenshots alone.
Read App Privacy information, with the right limits
The App Privacy section describes data practices submitted by the developer. Check what data the app may collect, whether data is linked to you, and whether it is used for tracking or other purposes. This disclosure is a useful screening tool, not an independent audit: Apple says the information is based on developer submissions and may not describe every practice. If the stated collection seems excessive for the app’s purpose, choose another option or install only after you understand the trade-off.

Alternative distribution details can change by region. Apple’s current documentation does not establish a worldwide feature, nor does it provide one fixed minimum iOS version for every route. Check the live Apple Support instructions for your location before changing settings or authorizing a distributor.

Install an indie app from the App Store
- Open the App Store. Search for the app or open it from an editorial story or collection.
- Open the product page. Verify the developer, description, screenshots, age rating, reviews, and App Privacy information.
- Tap Get or the displayed price. A paid app shows its current price; a free app may still offer subscriptions or in-app purchases.
- Authenticate when prompted. Confirm with Face ID, Touch ID, your passcode, or the Apple Account method required on the device.
- Wait for the download to finish. The icon appears on the Home Screen or in the App Library. Open the app and review its permission requests in context.
If the button is unavailable, the app may not be offered in your storefront, may require a different device capability, or may be restricted by Screen Time or family controls. Do not bypass a restriction by downloading an unverified copy from elsewhere.

Install from an alternative marketplace
Check eligibility first
Apple currently documents alternative marketplaces for users who meet both conditions: the Apple Account country or region must match an eligible area, and the user must be physically located there. The documented areas are Brazil, Japan, and EU countries or regions. Features and prompts vary between these locations.
If you travel, move between regions, or use an account registered elsewhere, eligibility may change. Do not change your Apple Account region solely to force access; region changes can affect subscriptions, payment methods, and previously acquired content.
Install the marketplace
- Use the marketplace’s official website in a browser on the iPhone. Avoid links copied from unsolicited messages or unknown profiles.
- Tap the marketplace’s installation link. iOS displays Apple’s disclosure and confirmation prompts.
- Read each prompt before allowing installation. The exact sequence differs between Japan or Brazil and the EU, so follow the wording shown on your device rather than an older walkthrough.
- Complete any Apple Account or device authentication. The marketplace appears only after the authorization succeeds.
- Use the marketplace’s own listing and purchase flow. Check who provides support and how refunds or subscriptions are handled before paying.
Apple notarizes apps distributed through alternative channels for baseline platform security, privacy, and integrity checks. Notarization is not the same as App Store approval. Apple says the App Store’s full business-practice and content standards do not apply to these apps, and alternative marketplaces are not made or managed by Apple.
Install directly from a developer website in the EU
Apple documents direct web distribution for eligible EU users. It is not a general worldwide iPhone capability.

- Open the developer’s official website in Safari or another browser on the iPhone. Confirm that the domain is the developer’s genuine site.
- Choose the developer’s app installation link. iOS shows information about the developer and asks for confirmation.
- Allow the developer in Settings if iOS requests it. The first installation from a developer may require an approval step before you can confirm the app.
- Return to the browser and confirm the installation. Follow the prompts displayed for your region and device.
- Open the app and review permissions. Recheck its privacy policy and support route because the app is outside the App Store review process.
Apple’s notarization and security checks provide a baseline, not a guarantee that an app is harmless, accurate, well-supported, or suitable for your data. Treat the developer’s identity, update process, and support commitments as part of the decision.
Understand the safety and support difference
App Store apps pass through Apple’s App Review Guidelines and are listed with standardized product-page information. Apps from alternative channels undergo a different notarization process focused on platform security, privacy, and integrity. Apple does not apply the App Store’s complete business-practice and content standards to those apps.
Apple states that alternative marketplaces are not made or managed by Apple and that its ability to support users affected by problems with apps downloaded outside the App Store—including alternative marketplaces and web distribution—is limited. Before installing outside the App Store, identify the marketplace or developer support contact, understand its payment and refund process, and decide whether the app is worth that additional responsibility.
Manage App Store apps after installation
Turn on automatic updates
Open Settings > Apps > App Store and look for the automatic app update control. Enabling it lets iPhone download updates without requiring you to start each one manually. Apple can change labels or locations between iOS releases, so use the Settings search field if the wording differs.
Offload unused apps instead of deleting their data
App Store settings include an option to offload unused apps. Offloading removes the app to free storage while preserving its documents and data so the app can be reinstalled if it remains available in the App Store. Offloading is different from deleting: deletion removes the app and may remove locally stored data.

Restrict installation, deletion, purchases, and age ratings
For a child’s or shared iPhone, open Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions. The available controls include installing apps, deleting apps, in-app purchases, and age-appropriate access. Set a Screen Time passcode that other users do not know, and review the restrictions after major iOS updates because labels and organization can change.

Control automatic downloads
Apple says automatic update downloads for alternative-distributed apps can be enabled under Settings > Apps > App Installation. If automatic downloads are off, check the relevant app or marketplace in Settings > Apps for available updates and authorization information.
Understand what happens if you remove a marketplace
If you delete an alternative marketplace or it stops operating, apps obtained from it no longer receive updates. An installed app may remain on the iPhone, but its update path is broken. Removing the marketplace is therefore not just a storage decision; it can leave the app on an old, unsupported version.

If you revoke a distributor’s authorization but keep its installed apps, Apple says those apps also stop receiving updates. Before revoking authorization, check whether the developer offers another supported installation route and whether you need to export data from the app.
Remove, replace, or troubleshoot an indie app
If the app will not install
- Confirm that you have enough storage and a working internet connection.
- Check whether Screen Time prevents installation or whether the app is unavailable in your storefront.
- For an alternative route, verify your Apple Account region and physical location meet the documented conditions.
- Return to the official developer or marketplace website instead of using a third-party download mirror.
If the app installs but will not open
- Restart the iPhone and install any available update from the same distribution channel.
- Review required permissions in Settings and compare them with the app’s stated function.
- Contact the developer or marketplace support contact. Apple’s support for apps outside the App Store is limited.
If updates have stopped
- For an App Store app, open the App Store and check your account’s available updates, then verify automatic updates under Settings > Apps > App Store.
- For an alternative-distributed app, check Settings > Apps > App Installation and confirm the marketplace remains installed, authorized, and operating.
- If the marketplace was removed or closed, ask the developer whether a supported migration or replacement installation exists before deleting the app.
If you want to remove the app
- Touch and hold the app icon on the Home Screen.
- Choose the deletion option shown by iOS and confirm.
- If the app uses an account or subscription, cancel the subscription through the account or payment channel that billed you; deleting an icon does not necessarily cancel billing.
- For an alternative marketplace, decide separately whether to remove the marketplace. Removing it can end updates for apps installed through it.
App Store or alternative channel: a practical decision framework
Use the App Store when it offers the app and you want Apple’s standard review framework, familiar update controls, and a centralized listing. Consider an alternative channel only when the app is unavailable in the App Store or the developer’s official distribution makes a compelling, understood difference.

A repeatable checklist for discovering indie apps
- Search the App Store by task, topic, or developer name.
- Use editorial stories and collections as discovery aids, not as a complete catalog.
- Verify the developer, support link, privacy policy, description, screenshots, age rating, reviews, and App Privacy section.
- Install through the App Store unless an eligible official alternative route is necessary.
- Before using an alternative channel, confirm your country/region and physical-location eligibility.
- Record who handles purchases, refunds, support, and updates.
- Enable the appropriate automatic-update control and check it after changing distribution channels.
- Do not remove a marketplace or revoke authorization without understanding the effect on future updates.
- Use Screen Time restrictions on shared or child devices.
For most iPhone owners, the App Store remains the simplest discovery and maintenance path. Alternative marketplaces and direct web distribution can broaden access in the regions where Apple supports them, but they require closer attention to eligibility, support, security boundaries, and the distributor’s long-term operation.
