Start by contacting the airport manager or leasing office at airports within a practical travel radius. Ask about current hangar and outdoor tie-down availability, how any waiting list works, and which written lease or permit terms apply. If you store the aircraft outside, follow its flight manual or manufacturer instructions and the airport’s rules; tie-down equipment and procedures are aircraft- and site-specific.

Where can you find a hangar or tie-down space?

Availability, prices, waiting lists and rental terms are local. There is no single national inventory or standard wait time established here, so begin with the airports you could realistically use rather than relying on a general estimate. Your workable radius depends on how often you expect to fly and how much ground travel you are willing to make to reach the aircraft.

Contact the airport directly

  1. Make a shortlist. Identify airports within a practical drive and note which ones you would actually use. A distant space may be less useful if reaching the aircraft regularly is inconvenient.
  2. Ask the airport manager or leasing office about both kinds of space. Find out whether there is an open hangar, an outdoor tie-down position, or an official waiting list for either. Ask who manages each type: the airport, a separate lessor, or another operator.
  3. Get the waiting-list rules. Ask whether the list is official, who is eligible, how offers are made, how often the list is updated, and how quickly you must respond to an offer. Ask whether you need to submit a written application or permit request.
  4. Check with local FBOs as an additional lead. An FBO may know whom to contact or whether space is available, but its role varies by airport. Confirm availability, the responsible lessor and all terms with the airport or actual space provider.
  5. Ask about outdoor parking if a hangar is unavailable. Find out where the tie-down position is, how its anchors are configured and what severe-weather procedures or aircraft-specific restrictions apply.

When you call or email, be ready to identify the aircraft you want to store and the kind of space you are seeking. Ask for the right contact if the manager does not handle leasing directly. A useful first inquiry is specific but does not assume a slot is available: ask whether hangar or tie-down space is currently open, who administers it, and what the next step is to apply. If the answer is a waiting list, ask how to stay in contact and whether you must respond within a stated period when an offer comes through.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep notes for each airport: the date you contacted it, the person or office you spoke with, whether the information applies to a hangar or tie-down, and any application or follow-up instructions. Availability can change, so distinguish a current written offer from an estimate or an informal indication that space may become available. If you are considering more than one airport, ask each the same core questions rather than comparing one airport’s confirmed terms with another’s rough estimate.

The FAA’s hangar-use FAQ describes airport sponsors’ responsibilities for hangar leases and waiting lists, but it does not provide a national list or a typical waiting period. For federally obligated airports, the FAQ says sponsors should use written lease agreements or permits and minimize the time people spend on waiting lists. Ask the airport about its actual process rather than assuming another airport’s rules apply. Read the FAA’s hangar-use FAQ, last updated July 30, 2025.

What should you ask before choosing a space?

Use the same questions for every airport or lessor you consider. That makes it easier to compare unlike offers and exposes costs or restrictions that may not appear in an initial availability message. Request the current amounts and conditions in writing before paying a deposit or moving the aircraft.

What to compare Questions to ask
Availability Is there an open space, or is there a waiting list? How are offers made, and how quickly must you respond?
Fit and movement Does the bay or tie-down area accommodate the aircraft’s wingspan and tail? Is there adequate door clearance, access and room to move the aircraft without obstruction?
Total cost What are the current rent or fees, deposit, utilities, taxes and any separate airport or FBO charges? Ask which amounts recur and when they are due.
Access What are the gate, building and operating hours? Is an escort or call-out required to reach the aircraft?
Agreement terms What are the lease or permit duration, renewal, termination, subletting, maintenance, permitted-use and move-out requirements?
Safety and protection What security, weather exposure, drainage, fire rules, emergency access and tie-down facilities apply?
Insurance What coverage and proof does the airport or lessor require? Ask your insurer whether the proposed storage arrangement affects your aircraft’s coverage.

Do not treat an informal statement that a space is available as a complete offer. The written agreement should identify the space or permit, the applicable charges, your access rights and the conditions for keeping or leaving the aircraft there. If a term is unclear—especially who maintains the facility, what uses are allowed or how termination works—ask for clarification before signing.

Check the physical fit, not just the advertised size

Confirm that the assigned bay or parking position suits your specific aircraft. Ask about the door opening as well as the interior space: a bay can appear large enough on paper while its entry clearance or access route makes movement difficult. For an outdoor position, confirm the location and arrangement of the anchors and whether the aircraft can be positioned and secured as its instructions require. The airport or lessor should be able to explain the space it is offering; your aircraft documentation governs how the aircraft may be secured.

Do not check only whether the aircraft fits once it is inside the hangar or parked in the assigned area. Ask how it will get into and out of that position, whether the movement route is clear, and whether adjacent aircraft or obstacles affect the clearance needed to maneuver. If the operator describes a shared or constrained area, ask what access arrangements apply. For outdoor parking, the location and spacing of anchors matter because the aircraft needs to be set up in accordance with its own tie-down instructions while maintaining wingtip clearance.

Ask who controls each rule

At a particular airport, the sponsor, leasing office, FBO or separate lessor may have different responsibilities. Confirm who issues the agreement, collects payments, manages access, maintains the space and handles weather or emergency procedures. FAA guidance gives airport sponsors discretion to manage local rules and address matters such as emergency access, fire codes, insurance and vehicle traffic. These are examples of local concerns, not a universal list of requirements for every airport.

Compare the complete offer

Consider the total arrangement rather than choosing on rent or distance alone. A space that is open now may still be unsuitable if its access hours do not work for you, the aircraft does not fit the bay or parking position, or the terms restrict a use you expect to need. Conversely, a farther airport may or may not be practical depending on how often you plan to fly and the time required to reach it. There is no universal answer: compare the actual travel, access, price, fit, weather exposure and written conditions for each option.

Ask for the current amounts rather than relying on a general estimate from another airport or an old listing. Separate recurring charges from a deposit or one-time fee, and ask whether utilities, taxes or airport and FBO charges are additional. No general rent figure or typical wait time is established here. The point of collecting written, location-specific terms is to make a fair comparison, not to assume that one category of storage always costs a certain amount.

How do you compare a hangar with outdoor tie-down?

A hangar offers shelter from weather, while a tie-down position leaves the aircraft outdoors and requires the owner to secure it according to aircraft-specific instructions. Neither option is automatically available or preferable for every owner. Compare actual offers against your aircraft’s needs, expected use, access and budget.

Decision factor Hangar Outdoor tie-down
Weather exposure Provides shelter; the FAA identifies a stormproof hangar or suitable shelter as stronger windstorm protection than relying on tie-down alone. Exposed to weather. Requires appropriate securing procedures and advance planning for storms.
Availability Check whether a bay is open and how any waitlist operates. Ask whether a tie-down position is available and whether its anchors and location suit your aircraft.
Cost Request the current written rent, deposit and any additional charges; there is no reliable general price established here. Request the current written fees and any separate charges; do not assume they are included in another airport payment.
Access and travel Compare drive time, gate and building hours, and any escort or call-out rules. Compare drive time, gate hours and the practical access to the assigned parking position.
Owner procedures Confirm any lease duties, access rules and permitted uses. Follow the aircraft’s tie-down instructions and airport rules; check the position’s anchor arrangement and local weather procedures.

A hangar is shelter, not a substitute for checking fit, access, lease duties or facility rules. Outdoor tie-down is not automatically unsafe, but it entails exposure to weather and a need to secure the aircraft properly after flights and plan for storms. Your choice should reflect the aircraft-specific requirements you can meet at the actual site, alongside the cost and access that work for you.

The FAA states, “The primary purpose of an aircraft hangar is aircraft storage.” Its FAQ also identifies storage of active aircraft as a permissible aeronautical use at covered airports. That policy context does not make every hangar available for rent or establish a particular price or lease: the airport’s written terms still control the offer you receive. See the FAA policy FAQ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume that a hangar will lower insurance premiums, reduce maintenance, or extend an aircraft’s lifespan; the available FAA material does not establish those outcomes. Ask your insurer about the specific storage arrangement and compare the actual costs, access and protections offered by each location.

What FAA hangar policy applies to your airport?

The FAA hangar-use policy concerns aircraft storage facilities at federally obligated airports when those facilities are designated for aeronautical use on an FAA-approved Airport Layout Plan. The FAA FAQ says sponsors that accept federal grants or federally conveyed property have obligations relating to dedicated aviation facilities. It describes written leases or permits and waiting-list management as part of sponsor oversight.

The policy does not govern privately owned, off-airport facilities. The FAA FAQ says a non-federally obligated airport owner may impose restrictions it considers necessary, while noting that some other federal requirements may still apply. An airport’s obligations and the terms of an individual rental are not the same thing: verify the particular facility, the responsible owner or sponsor, and your own lease or permit. Do not use the FAA FAQ as a substitute for the agreement.

This distinction matters when you are comparing places that are not all part of the same kind of airport facility. The FAQ’s policy scope is specific; it is not a promise that any airport must offer a hangar or tie-down position to a particular applicant. Ask the operator which rules apply to the space, who has authority to lease it, and whether the written agreement incorporates additional facility or airport rules. The airport’s direct answer and the documents for the specific space are the practical starting point.

How can you secure an aircraft parked outside?

Use the aircraft’s own flight manual or manufacturer instructions, along with the airport’s requirements. FAA Advisory Circular (AC) 65-9A says small aircraft should be tied down after each flight to reduce the chance of damage from sudden storms. It discusses positioning the aircraft as nearly into the wind as anchor locations permit, preserving wingtip clearance and using appropriate tie-down procedures. Those points are guidance, not a substitute for the aircraft’s specific tie-down instructions.

Confirm the anchors and position

Inspect or ask about the tie-down facilities before committing to a position. The anchor locations need to allow the aircraft to be arranged in accordance with its instructions, including adequate clearance from nearby aircraft or obstacles. The FAA circular states that anchors for small single-engine aircraft should provide a minimum holding power of approximately 3,000 pounds each. That is FAA guidance about anchor holding power—not a universal tie-down kit rating and not a guarantee that an anchor will perform safely in every soil, pavement or weather condition. Read AC 65-9A, Airframe and Powerplant Mechanics General Handbook.

Do not infer from that figure that any rope, strap or anchor marked with a similar number is suitable for your aircraft or the site. Check the aircraft’s tie-down points and specified procedures, and ask the airport about the installed anchors. If the available position cannot be used in the way the aircraft documentation requires, ask for another position rather than improvising.

If you need to obtain aircraft tie-down ropes, straps or a three-point aircraft tie-down kit, first confirm the aircraft’s specified tie-down points and the airport’s anchor arrangement. A product description alone cannot establish compatibility with a particular aircraft or site. The anchor holding-power figure in AC 65-9A describes FAA guidance for small single-engine aircraft anchors; it does not certify a particular consumer kit or guarantee performance in every installation.

Plan for a storm before one is imminent

FAA AC 20-35C, Tiedown Sense, issued July 12, 1983, says that, with sufficient warning, flying the aircraft out of the area is the first protective measure; a stormproof hangar or other suitable shelter is the next best measure. If shelter is unavailable, the circular discusses securing the aircraft with tie-downs. It also recommends securing doors and windows and covering engine openings and pitot-static tubes to prevent foreign matter from entering.

Use that advisory guidance together with the aircraft’s own flight manual and manufacturer instructions. Tie-down points, covers and storm procedures are aircraft-specific; generic consumer equipment should not be assumed to fit or protect every aircraft. Ask the airport what procedures it follows when severe weather threatens, but do not assume its response replaces your responsibility to secure the aircraft. Read AC 20-35C, Tiedown Sense.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

If you are considering an engine intake cover or pitot cover, choose and use it only in accordance with the aircraft-specific instructions. AC 20-35C discusses covering openings to prevent foreign matter entry, but that does not mean a generic cover is appropriate for every aircraft. The same principle applies to storm preparations generally: know the applicable procedure before conditions deteriorate, and use a suitable shelter when one is available and the circumstances allow it.

FAA advisory circulars provide guidance; they are not an individual aircraft’s operating instructions or an equipment approval. Check the FAA source for any revised status or guidance, and defer to the applicable aircraft documentation and airport rules where details differ.

What should you have in writing before moving in?

Before paying a deposit or bringing the aircraft to the site, obtain the lease or permit and any referenced rules. Make sure the documents match the space and arrangement you discussed. A clear written record also helps distinguish an airport requirement from a lessor’s condition or an informal suggestion.

  • The identity of the party granting the space and the exact hangar bay or tie-down position.
  • The rent or fees, deposit, additional charges, payment schedule and any stated changes to those amounts.
  • The agreement’s start date, duration, renewal and termination conditions, including any required notice or move-out process.
  • Access hours, gate or escort rules, permitted uses, maintenance responsibilities and any subletting restrictions.
  • Security, fire, emergency-access, weather and tie-down requirements that apply to the facility.
  • Required insurance coverage and the form of proof the airport or lessor accepts.

If the aircraft’s fit, door clearance, movement route or tie-down arrangement has not been confirmed, resolve that before committing. If the agreement refers to separate airport or facility rules, request those documents too. A space is a workable option only when the aircraft can be accommodated under the rules and procedures that actually apply there.

Also confirm the practical steps for taking possession: when the agreement begins, how you receive access, and whom to contact about a facility issue or change in access. These are not minor details if you need to reach the aircraft. If a weather or emergency procedure is described verbally, ask where it is written or who can provide the current instructions. Keep the lease, permit and referenced rules together so you can check what you agreed to rather than relying on recollection.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find a hangar for rent?

Start with the airport manager or leasing office at airports within a practical travel radius. Ask about current inventory, who handles hangar leasing, and whether a separate lessor controls the space. Local FBOs can be an additional source of contacts, but verify availability and terms with the airport or actual lessor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I get on an airport hangar waiting list?

Ask the airport or leasing office whether it maintains an official list, who is eligible, whether you need a written application, how the list is updated, and how offers are made. Ask how quickly you must respond if offered space. Procedures and availability are local; the FAA does not provide a national list or typical wait time.

Can I safely tie down my airplane outside?

Outdoor storage requires following the aircraft’s flight manual or manufacturer tie-down instructions and the airport’s rules. FAA AC 65-9A says small aircraft should be tied down after each flight and discusses positioning as nearly into the wind as anchor locations permit, with wingtip clearance. For storm conditions, follow aircraft-specific instructions and plan ahead; do not treat generic equipment as suitable for every aircraft.

How much does hangar space cost?

There is no reliable general price established here. Ask each airport or lessor for current written rent or fees, deposits, utilities, taxes and any separate airport or FBO charges. Compare the complete terms rather than relying on a figure from another location.

Does FAA hangar policy apply to every storage facility?

No. The FAA hangar-use policy concerns facilities designated for aeronautical use at federally obligated airports. It does not govern privately owned off-airport facilities. Verify the rules and written agreement for the particular airport, owner or lessor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does the 3,000-pound anchor figure mean?

AC 65-9A gives approximately 3,000 pounds per anchor as the minimum holding power guidance for anchors for small single-engine aircraft. It is not a universal kit rating or a guarantee of safe performance in all sites and weather. Check the aircraft’s instructions and the airport’s installed anchors.
