RiffSalad is a local-first vault designed to help a guitarist find a recording by remembered musical qualities—such as tuning, tempo, or mood—instead of trying to recall its filename. Its creator, Jeswin Jaison, built it for his intermediate-guitarist friend Sam, who might remember a clip as “heavy, Drop C, around 145, I think it was a chorus idea.”
Jaison’s account describes a hybrid system: conventional audio analysis supplies measurable clues, while local language and embedding models help interpret searches and rank matches. The implementation and performance details below are the author’s reports, not results from an independent code review or test.
Why build a searchable riff vault?
Guitar ideas often survive as rough memories rather than useful filenames. A player may recall that a recording was heavy, in Drop C, near a certain tempo, or intended as a chorus, but not remember when it was recorded or what it was called. RiffSalad is meant to make those musical clues searchable.

The project accepts imported WAV, MP3, and M4A recordings, as well as recordings made in the browser. It analyzes clips and supports natural-language search and similarity-based retrieval. Example searches include “heavy drop C riff around 140 BPM” and “clean mellow fingerpicked thing in E minor.” Those are illustrative queries from Jaison’s article, not results from a user study.

How RiffSalad processes a recording
Jaison describes a pipeline that combines audio measurements, speech transcription, language parsing, and a searchable database. The application is built with FastAPI and SQLAlchemy on the back end, and React 19, TypeScript, Vite, Tailwind, and WaveSurfer.js on the front end.
Audio analysis and spoken notes
The project uses librosa to estimate BPM, key, energy, note density, and duration. For tempo analysis, the author says it separates harmonic and percussive components before tracking tempo; key detection compares tonal profiles. A Basic Pitch-style ONNX model extracts MIDI. For voice memos, faster-whisper’s tiny model transcribes speech locally, making spoken context searchable alongside the music.

Local language and embedding models
Ollama serves a 1.5-billion-parameter Qwen2.5 model, which parses a search phrase into candidate filters. The system also uses nomic-embed-text embeddings and stores them alongside a SQLite database. These components support retrieval, but the language model is not the sole judge of whether a clip matches a musical description.
How search turns a description into matches
- Parse the query. The language model identifies possible filters, such as a BPM range, key, energy, or mood words.
- Apply measurable constraints. Ordinary application code removes recordings that conflict with measurable requirements.
- Rerank the remaining clips. Embedding similarity helps rank candidates against the meaning of the search phrase.
- Fall back to text matching when needed. If the language model or embeddings are unavailable, the author says the app can still match text in titles, notes, tags, transcripts, and descriptions.
For “find similar,” Jaison says RiffSalad blends embedding similarity with distances between measurable features such as BPM, key, and energy. The design separates objective clues from subjective language: measured attributes filter candidates first, while the model helps interpret a description and phrase results. That is the project’s stated approach, not a comparative evaluation against hosted models or other retrieval systems.

What local-first means here
Jaison says the recordings, transcripts, and database live in a local data/ folder on the user’s machine. He also says the first run downloads models and that the project works without internet after that initial download. This is the author’s description of the project; it does not establish that every dependency, setup path, or deployment configuration will work offline without exception.
Keeping the working library local also makes backup the user’s responsibility. A separate backup copy—on storage of your choice—can reduce the risk of losing recordings or the database if the computer fails. RiffSalad does not require a particular drive, capacity, brand, or storage medium.

Limits to keep in mind
Detected key and tempo are clues, not ground truth
Jaison warns that key and BPM detection are heuristics and can be wrong, and says both can be overridden inline. Treat them as useful retrieval aids rather than authoritative transcription, especially when a result depends on an exact musical attribute.
Performance and privacy claims are author-reported
The article reports that a riff takes less than 15 seconds to analyze on an M4 MacBook Air. It gives no benchmark method, test-set size, hardware comparison, or accuracy figure, so that timing should not be treated as a general speed guarantee. The article also does not include an independent privacy audit; its local-storage description is the creator’s account.

What the project demonstrates
RiffSalad’s central idea is to search for musical fragments through several kinds of memory at once: measured audio properties, written notes, spoken context, and semantic similarity. Its fallback text search means retrieval need not depend entirely on the local language and embedding models, while inline corrections give the user a way to fix inaccurate key or tempo estimates.
