On a Googlebook with a Glowbar, a hidden app called Glowbar Disco reportedly adds color effects, animations, and music-reactive lighting to the LED strip on the laptop lid. To find it, open Settings > Apps > See all apps, turn on Show System from the three-dot menu, search for Glowbar Disco, then open the app from its app-info screen. The navigation comes from a third-party guide and has not been independently verified on a device.
How to find and open Glowbar Disco
Chrome Unboxed reports that Glowbar Disco is tucked among system apps rather than listed in the ordinary app launcher. Follow these steps on a Googlebook with a Glowbar:
- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps > See all apps.
- Open the three-dot menu and select Show System.
- Search the app list for Glowbar Disco and select it.
- On the app-info screen, select Open in the upper-right corner.
These steps are reported by Chrome Unboxed; the navigation may differ after Googlebook OS updates.
What Glowbar Disco reportedly does
The app is reported to offer three kinds of controls. These are descriptions of its interface from Chrome Unboxed, not independently tested results.

Choose colors
Color themes reportedly include solid colors and gradients.
Pick an animation
The reported presets are Firebird, Fire, Rainbow, Vibe Code, Strobe, and Pong.

Try music sync
The guide lists three audio-reactive modes: VU Meter, Spectrum, and Disco. It describes music sync as experimental and warns that results may vary, so treat it as a feature to try rather than a guaranteed effect.

Google defines the Glowbar as the LED light strip on a device’s lid. Its documented role is system feedback, including when the screen is off. Google describes white light when the device is on and plugged in, dim white when it is on and unplugged, a colored animation while waking, and green, yellow, or red battery indications. A blue-purple gradient signals an active Gemini conversation. See Google’s Glowbar settings and status-light documentation.

To manage the built-in lights, Google’s settings path is Settings > Device and accessories > Glowbar. There you can toggle Use glowbar and control the Gemini light separately. Turning off the Glowbar does not disable critical power, charging, or sleep/resume lights; turning off the Gemini light does not prevent you from speaking with Gemini. Google’s documentation describes these standard behaviors, not the hidden app’s location or controls.

Glowbar Disco concerns Googlebook hardware equipped with the physical lid light strip; the available sources do not establish that a generic laptop or an external LED bar can use it. Android Authority reports that Google developed the Glowbar software while partner manufacturers built the hardware, naming Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo among Googlebook makers. That does not confirm which current models include a Glowbar, so check a specific device’s specifications before buying.

Google leaders have also discussed developer access, but that is not the same as public API availability today. Tom’s Guide quotes Google Android Ecosystem president Sameer Samat describing the boot-up animation as indicating the remaining power, and says he discussed opening a developer API; the report provides no release date. Do not assume third-party apps can currently control the Glowbar through a public API. Tom’s Guide’s report covers Samat’s comments. Android Authority also reports that Google laptop and tablet product leader Alexander Kuscher mentioned Glowbar Disco in an interview, describing it as an app “hiding somewhere” on the device; its account identifies the segment at 1:15:25.
