The most reliable way to find games made without generative AI is to combine three imperfect signals: the game’s platform disclosure, a specific statement from its developer, and a current community or storefront listing. Steam tells you about certain AI-assisted content shipped to players; itch.io’s No AI tag helps you discover projects whose creators make a broader claim; curator lists add leads and explanations. None is a universal, independently audited certificate that no generative-AI tool was used at any stage.

Use the workflow below to decide whether a title meets your definition of “without generative AI,” and record uncertainty rather than treating silence as proof.

Decide what “without generative AI” means to you

People use the phrase “AI-free” to mean different things. A game can contain no generated art while its marketing images were generated, or have human-written assets while using an AI assistant for code. Before checking a title, choose the boundary that matters for your purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Standard What you are checking Evidence usually needed
No generated content shipped to players The released game contains no AI-generated artwork, sound, writing, voice, localization, or other player-facing material. A platform disclosure plus a developer statement covering the shipped content.
No live generative feature The running game does not call a generative model to create dialogue, images, quests, music, or other content during play. The platform’s live-generation disclosure and a current feature description.
No generative-AI marketing Store images, trailers, key art, or promotional copy were not generated by such tools. A developer statement that explicitly includes marketing materials; platform disclosures may not cover this.
No generative AI at any production stage Developers did not use a generative tool for brainstorming, code, editing, concept work, testing, localization, or any other part of production. A dated statement that defines this broad scope. Platform disclosures alone cannot establish it.

These standards are not interchangeable. If a developer says “all in-game assets are human-made,” that answers the first standard but not necessarily the fourth. Write down your chosen standard before researching so that an attractive slogan does not silently change the question.

Use Steam’s disclosure before anything else

Where to look

Open the game’s Steam store page in a browser or the desktop client. Read the generative-AI disclosure details in the page’s content or AI information panel, not just the short description and screenshots. The wording can identify whether the game uses pre-generated material, live-generated material, or both.

What Steam’s disclosure covers

Valve’s Steamworks Content Survey defines the relevant section around content created with AI tools that ships with the game and is consumed by players. Its examples include artwork, sound, narrative, and localization. Steam separates pre-generated content, prepared before release and included in the build, from live-generated content, created by an AI tool while the game is running.

This is a player-facing-content disclosure, not a complete production history. The documentation states: Efficiency gains through the use of these tools is not the focus of this section. In practical terms, a developer might use an AI tool for an internal efficiency task without that use appearing in this particular disclosure. That possibility does not prove that a specific game did so; it explains why the panel cannot certify “no generative AI at any stage.”

How to interpret each result

  • A pre-generated use is disclosed: decide whether the named category conflicts with your standard. A small amount of generated localization may matter as much to you as generated key art.
  • A live-generated use is disclosed: check when and how the model is called. A game with optional generated dialogue still fails a strict no-live-generation standard.
  • The disclosure describes no qualifying use: treat that as information about the scope Steam asks developers to report, not as proof that every internal workflow was free of generative tools.
  • The panel is empty or missing: mark the title as unknown. Do not convert an absent disclosure into an “AI-free” result.

Capture the exact wording and the date you checked it. Store pages can change when a developer adds downloadable content, patches, or a new online feature.

Find candidates through itch.io’s No AI tag

Browse the discovery page

On itch.io, browse the No AI tag together with the videogame tag. This route is useful when you want a pool of candidates rather than a verdict on one famous release. The tag page describes projects that advertise not using generative AI in their creative process.

Read the project page, not just the tag

Open each project’s description, development log, FAQ, and any linked post. Look for a sentence that defines the creator’s scope: “no generated assets in the shipped game” is narrower than “we did not use generative AI anywhere in development.” Note whether the statement covers contractors, commissioned assets, translation, voice work, and later updates.

itch.io’s creator guidance asks for accurate, relevant tags and asks creators to state clearly when a project involves automatic or AI generation. The guidance supports useful disclosure, but it does not describe the No AI label as an inspection performed by itch.io. Treat it as a creator-supplied discovery signal. A project can be a promising candidate while still requiring direct verification.

Check the project’s date and update history

Record when the claim was posted and scan later development logs. A statement made for a prototype may not cover a commercial release, a new soundtrack, or an imported asset added months later. If a page has no date, ask the creator for the current scope before relying on it.

Use curator lists as leads, not certification

Steam curator pages such as Is This AI? can surface games and link to explanations. Entries may show a review date and describe the evidence the curator considered. That is valuable for discovery, especially when a store page is difficult to search.

A curator entry is still a community assessment. Open the cited developer statement, platform disclosure, or official post yourself. Check whether the curator’s conclusion uses your standard: an entry that calls a game “AI-free” may be discussing only the absence of generated assets in the final build. If the entry has no primary evidence, keep it as a lead and label the title unverified.

A title-by-title verification workflow

Use this sequence for any game that matters to your decision. It works across Steam, itch.io, and other stores, even when a platform uses different labels.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Write your standard. Choose shipped content, live generation, marketing, or every production stage. Include whether third-party or commissioned work counts.
  2. Read the platform panel. On Steam, inspect the generative-AI disclosure details and identify every category mentioned. On another storefront, note exactly what its label claims to cover.
  3. Save the wording and date. Copy the relevant sentence into your notes and record the page date or your access date. Do not rely on a search-result snippet.
  4. Find a first-party statement. Check the developer’s store description, FAQ, dated update, official website post, or verified social account. Prefer language that states scope over a slogan such as “made by humans.”
  5. Compare scopes. Ask whether the developer statement covers the same things as the platform panel. Resolve differences: “no AI assets” does not answer whether an AI assistant was used for code or marketing.
  6. Check later changes. Review patch notes, downloadable-content announcements, and major updates after the statement. A later addition can change the answer for shipped content or live features.
  7. Check independent leads. If a curator or community list points you to the title, follow its cited evidence. Treat an uncited opinion as a prompt for more checking, not as confirmation.
  8. Assign a status. Use one of four labels: meets my standard, does not meet my standard, partly answered, or unknown. Explain the reason in one sentence.

Compare the three discovery routes

Route Who supplies the claim? Typical scope Evidence strength Best use
Steam disclosure The developer through Steam’s survey and store-page display. AI-assisted content shipped to players, including pre-generated and live-generated categories. Useful platform disclosure with a defined scope; not a whole-production audit. Check a specific Steam title’s player-facing content first.
itch.io No AI tag The project creator using a free-form discovery tag. Often a broader creative-process claim, but the exact meaning varies by project. Creator assertion; the tag is not presented as independent inspection. Build a candidate list and then read each project’s statement.
Curator list A community curator. Whatever the curator chooses to assess, often based on developer statements or disclosures. Community judgment; quality depends on cited and current evidence. Find overlooked titles and follow links to primary evidence.

No route in this comparison establishes a universal, independently audited catalog of games made without generative AI at every stage.

How to judge the developer’s wording

Look for a defined object

Strong statements identify what was checked: “No generative models were used to create any art, music, writing, voice, or localization shipped in version 1.0.” A weak statement says only “real artists made this game.” The latter may be sincere while leaving code, editing, translation, or marketing outside the claim.

Look for exclusions and exceptions

Read phrases such as “except for temporary prototypes,” “except for accessibility testing,” or “we do not control contractors’ tools.” An exception does not make the project deceptive; it tells you whether the title fits your chosen standard.

Prefer dated, update-aware language

A dated announcement tied to a release version is easier to evaluate than an undated badge. If the developer says the claim applies to a particular build, compare it with the current build number and update history. Ask whether downloadable content, community items, or a live-service feature was added later.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate a denial from a promise

“We do not use AI” could describe a studio policy, while “this release contains no AI-generated player-facing content” describes a product state. For your decision, the second type is more directly testable. If the statement is ambiguous, classify the title as partly answered or unknown rather than guessing.

Common traps and what to do instead

Assuming an empty Steam field means no AI

The disclosure system has a defined scope and may not cover every tool used during production. An empty field therefore cannot answer a broader question about the entire development process. Seek a dated developer statement or leave the result unknown.

Treating a tag as an audit

Tags are designed for discovery. They can be inaccurate, outdated, or narrower than your standard. Use the tag to find the page, then inspect the description and updates.

Accepting a curator’s verdict without its evidence

Curators can make research faster, but their entries remain judgments. Follow the cited source and check its date. If no source is supplied, record the curator’s view separately from your confidence level.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Checking only the base game

A later patch, expansion, user-facing generator, or replacement localization can change the answer. Always verify the version you intend to play, not only the launch build.

Confusing traditional procedural systems with generative AI

A game can generate levels from hand-authored rules without using a generative model. Conversely, a game can include a live model behind a feature that looks like ordinary procedural content. Ask what tool creates the material and when it runs; do not infer from the visual result alone.

What to record in your notes

  • Game title, platform, edition, and version or access date.
  • Exact disclosure wording and the categories it names.
  • Developer statement, publication date, and the scope it explicitly covers.
  • Whether the statement addresses shipped assets, live generation, marketing, internal production, contractors, and future updates.
  • Curator or community references, including their review dates and links to primary evidence when available.
  • Your chosen standard and final status: meets, does not meet, partly answered, or unknown.

This record prevents a later patch or a changed store page from erasing the context behind your decision.

Turn your notes into a consistent decision

Use a small worksheet for every candidate so that popular titles do not receive a looser test than obscure ones. Put the title, platform, edition, and current version at the top. Under that, copy the platform wording, then the developer’s statement, then any curator link. For each source, mark the date, the person or organization making the claim, and the exact subject: shipped assets, live generation, marketing, internal tools, or contractors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare each source with your chosen standard rather than averaging them into a vague confidence score. For example, a Steam panel that reports no pre-generated content and a developer post that discusses only art may be enough for a “no generated art in the build” standard, but only partly answer a “no generative AI anywhere” standard. Write the unresolved point in plain language, such as “code-assistant use not addressed.”

If sources conflict, preserve both statements and prefer the newer, more specific primary statement while noting the discrepancy. Do not silently overwrite an older claim; it may describe an earlier build. If the conflict concerns a major feature, treat the game as unknown until the developer clarifies which version you will receive.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Questions worth asking a developer

When public wording is too broad, ask one precise question instead of “Is this AI-free?” Request the scope and version: “For the current build, were generative models used to create any art, sound, writing, voice, or localization shipped to players?” If your boundary is broader, add: “Does that include code, brainstorming, editing, testing, marketing, contractors, and commissioned work?” You can also ask whether later downloadable content or live features follow the same policy.

A clear reply can improve your classification, but a non-response is not evidence either way. Save the reply’s date and wording, and check that it refers to the edition and platform you plan to use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the answer is still unknown

Unknown is a valid result. The available sources do not provide a comprehensive, independently verified catalog covering every production stage. If a title has no disclosure, no clear developer statement, and only an uncited community claim, there is not enough evidence to call it AI-free. You can contact the developer with a precise question, but do not treat a lack of reply as confirmation.

For a purchase decision, apply your standard consistently: reject titles that clearly conflict with it, accept titles whose current evidence clearly meets it, and keep ambiguous titles in the unknown category. This approach respects both the limits of platform disclosures and the differences between players’ definitions of “without generative AI.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Does an empty Steam AI disclosure mean a game used no generative AI?

No. Steam’s disclosure is about certain AI-assisted content that ships with the game and is consumed by players. An empty or missing panel cannot establish that no generative tool was used for internal work, marketing, or other activities outside that scope.

Is itch.io’s No AI tag a guarantee?

No. It is a creator-supplied discovery label for projects advertising that they did not use generative AI in their creative process. Read the project description, dates, updates, and any developer explanation before treating it as evidence for your own standard.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the difference between pre-generated and live-generated content on Steam?

Pre-generated content is created before release and included in the game, such as art, sound, narrative, or localization. Live-generated content is created by an AI tool while the game is running. Decide whether either category conflicts with your boundary.

Can a game be acceptable if only its marketing used generative AI?

That depends on your definition. A standard limited to player-facing content may still be met, while a standard that excludes AI-generated trailers, key art, or promotional copy is not. Look for a developer statement that explicitly addresses marketing.

How should I handle a patch, expansion, or new AI feature?

Recheck the current build, downloadable content, patch notes, and live features. A later addition can change the answer even if the launch version met your standard. Record the version and date of each check.

What if a curator calls a game AI-free but provides no source?

Treat the entry as a lead, not confirmation. Look for the cited developer statement or platform disclosure yourself. If none exists, keep the title partly answered or unknown.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Start with Steam’s disclosure, use itch.io’s No AI tag and curator lists to find candidates, then verify each title against a dated, first-party statement. Match the evidence to your own boundary—shipped content, live generation, marketing, or every production stage—and treat silence, vague slogans, and uncited labels as unknown rather than proof.
