If a franchise has moved away from the style you loved, do not search only for “games like that franchise.” Break the older experience into concrete traits—combat loop, movement, progression, camera, pacing, exploration, party structure, level design, and atmosphere—then search for those traits. Use Steam’s tag and description search to build a candidate list, use recommendation shelves to expand it, and inspect every candidate against your original checklist before buying or installing it.

Why “more like the old games” is too broad

A franchise can change direction in several ways at once. A new entry might retain the setting and characters while replacing deliberate combat with faster action, linear levels with an open world, or a fixed camera with an over-the-shoulder view. Another sequel might keep the combat but remove party management, resource scarcity, or the slower pacing that created the older games’ tension.

That is why a title-level search often produces disappointing matches. Storefront algorithms can recognize a shared genre, but genre alone rarely describes the moment-to-moment experience. “Action,” “role-playing,” or “adventure” can cover games with completely different controls, pacing, progression, and tone.

The reliable approach is to turn your preference into a short specification. Once you know which parts of the older formula matter, you can search for those mechanics, test recommendations against them, and compare candidates consistently.

Step 1: Define the qualities you want to keep

Start with the game you miss, but describe experiences rather than labels. Write down the features you would notice within the first hour and the systems that kept you playing for the long term. The following prompts help separate a genuine preference from a broad genre name.

Quality Questions to answer Searchable clues
Combat loop Is combat slow and deliberate, combo-driven, turn-based, ranged, stealth-focused, or built around abilities and cooldowns? Parry timing, resource-based attacks, tactical turns, stealth, character-action, squad commands
Movement Do you value precise platforming, unrestricted traversal, vehicle handling, climbing, dodging, or a deliberately limited character? 2D platforming, traversal tools, climbing, vehicle exploration, dodge-focused movement
Progression What changes over time: equipment, skill trees, party members, narrative choices, statistics, crafting, or only player mastery? Skill tree, equipment upgrades, party progression, branching choices, inventory management
Exploration Were you looking for dense levels, optional rooms, environmental puzzles, map completion, secrets, or a guided route? Metroidvania, dungeon exploration, environmental puzzles, secrets, interconnected levels
Camera and perspective Did the viewpoint affect the experience? Consider fixed camera angles, first person, third person, isometric, side scrolling, or a top-down view. Fixed camera, first-person, third-person, isometric, side-scrolling, top-down
Pacing Do you want frequent action, long stretches of investigation, turn-based pauses, or a deliberate alternation between danger and downtime? Slow-burn, mission-based, real-time, turn-based, episodic, exploration-heavy
Party structure Was the appeal a single protagonist, a switchable party, companion abilities, relationship systems, or cooperative roles? Party-based, companion management, character switching, local co-op, online co-op
Level design Did you prefer discrete stages, a hub with missions, a continuous world, branching routes, or tightly authored set pieces? Linear levels, hub-and-spoke, open world, branching paths, immersive simulation
Atmosphere Which emotional qualities matter: dread, wonder, melancholy, comedy, mystery, high fantasy, science fiction, or grounded realism? Psychological horror, mystery, dark fantasy, space exploration, comedic adventure

Choose three to five traits that are essential. Mark the rest as preferences. If every trait is mandatory, you may eliminate good alternatives before you have enough evidence; if none is mandatory, almost any game in the same broad genre will appear acceptable.

Separate features from presentation

Ask whether you miss the mechanics or the presentation around them. A familiar setting, soundtrack, character archetype, or art style can make a sequel feel similar even when the controls and systems are unrelated. Conversely, a game with a different setting may reproduce the older experience closely if it shares the same combat rhythm, camera, level structure, and progression.

Write two lists:

  • Must keep: the systems that determine how you play minute to minute.
  • Nice to keep: setting, visual style, narrative tone, or other features that improve the match but are not deal-breakers.

This distinction makes later recommendations easier to judge. A candidate that matches four must-keep mechanics but uses a different setting may be a better fit than one that copies the setting while changing the entire play loop.

Step 2: Translate your list into search terms

Use specific mechanics and narrower subgenres instead of a single word such as “action.” Steam supports searches by title, tag, or description and provides additional filters. Its official discovery information is available on the Steam Discovery Update page.

Build a query from a small group of terms. For example, someone who misses older survival-focused adventures might start with a perspective term, an exploration term, and a pacing term rather than searching only for “survival horror.” Someone who misses party tactics might combine turn-based combat, party management, and resource decisions.

  1. Write down your must-keep traits. Use plain language first, then look for the store’s closest tag or subgenre wording.
  2. Start with two or three specific terms. A narrow query reveals whether your vocabulary is useful without making the first result set impossibly small.
  3. Add a feature filter. Use the available feature and tag filters to remove games that cannot meet a fundamental requirement, such as a required perspective or multiplayer mode.
  4. Search descriptions as well as tags. A mechanic may be described in the text even when it is not represented by the exact tag you expected.
  5. Record promising terms. When a good candidate uses wording you did not think of, reuse that wording in a second search.

Prefer specific tags over broad labels

Steamworks’ Steam Tags documentation explains that a game’s top 20 tags can affect which titles are treated as similar. The documentation also notes that more specific tags can carry more influence than common, broad tags. That gives you a practical rule: combine a broad category with mechanics, structure, or perspective that narrows the experience.

For instance, “role-playing” is a starting point, not a final description. Add terms that describe party control, turn structure, equipment management, dialogue choices, or exploration. “Action” becomes more useful when paired with a camera, movement style, or combat behavior. The exact tag names available will vary by title and storefront language, so treat the first search as vocabulary discovery.

Use exclusions carefully

If the storefront offers exclusion or filtering controls, remove only traits that genuinely disqualify a game. Excluding every unfamiliar tag can hide unusual but accurate matches, especially when developers have tagged a hybrid game differently from the franchise you know. Keep a short note explaining why a filter exists; remove it if the candidate pool becomes empty.

Step 3: Use Steam’s discovery surfaces to expand the list

Search creates a controlled starting set. Steam also exposes several recommendation surfaces that can reveal candidates you would not find with your first wording: the recommendation feed, Discovery Queue, curator recommendations, and a title’s More Like This area. Use them to generate leads, not to prove that a game reproduces the older formula.

Recommendation feed

Review the feed after you have played or wishlisted enough games for it to reflect your habits. Open each suggestion and compare it with your must-keep list. A recommendation can be useful because it shares an audience, a tag combination, or a play pattern, even when its setting and presentation differ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Discovery Queue

Run the Discovery Queue as a browsing pass rather than a final ranking. Keep a note of titles that match at least one important mechanic, then return to their store pages for detailed inspection. Do not assume that appearing next to a favorite means the two games share the same combat or progression systems.

Curator recommendations

Curators can be valuable when their focus matches your specification—for example, a curator centered on a particular subgenre, camera style, or accessibility requirement. Read the curator’s explanation and verify the game page yourself. A curator’s label is another signal, not a substitute for checking the actual features.

More Like This

The More Like This area is convenient for expanding from a known title. However, Steam’s tag documentation makes an important distinction: its tag-driven title-similarity display is not a direct reflection of the More Like This algorithm. In practice, the two surfaces may produce different candidates. Use both, then keep only games that satisfy your own criteria.

Step 4: Understand what recommendations can and cannot know

Valve’s July 11, 2019 announcement for the Interactive Recommender described personalized suggestions based on playtime histories and patterns among players. It also described controls for adjusting a release window and popularity. Valve summarized the idea this way:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The idea is that if players with broadly similar play habits to you also tend to play another game you haven’t tried yet, then that game is likely to be a good recommendation for you.”

That explanation is from the 2019 launch announcement, Introducing the Interactive Recommender. It describes the rationale and controls at launch; it does not establish the exact implementation of Steam’s current recommender.

The same announcement described a cold-start limitation: a game with no player data could not be recommended by that model. That matters when you are searching for new or lightly played releases. A personalized shelf may overlook them simply because there is not yet enough behavior to establish a pattern. Pair personalized recommendations with tag searches, description searches, and new-release discovery instead of treating one feed as complete.

Valve’s tag documentation also warns against equating tag similarity with the More Like This system. Together, these limits explain why no single recommendation surface can guarantee a mechanical match. Algorithms are useful for finding possibilities; your checklist supplies the final judgment.

Step 5: Inspect every candidate’s actual features

Open the store page for each promising title and verify the details that determined your search. A shared tag or recommendation placement is only a lead. Use the following inspection order so attractive artwork or a familiar setting does not decide for you.

  1. Read the description for the core loop. Look for explicit explanations of combat, exploration, progression, mission structure, and player choices. Marketing language such as “epic” or “immersive” is not a mechanical specification.
  2. Check screenshots and video material. Confirm the camera, interface, level layout, encounter density, and visual readability. Screenshots can reveal whether the viewpoint and environment design match your must-keep traits.
  3. Verify player support. Check whether the game is single-player, local cooperative, online cooperative, competitive, or built around a party of computer-controlled companions. “Party-based” and “multiplayer” describe different needs.
  4. Confirm platform compatibility. Make sure the listed operating system, controller support, and any console or handheld version fit the device on which you intend to play.
  5. Inspect progression and structure. Determine whether upgrades are permanent, run-based, equipment-driven, skill-tree based, or mostly cosmetic. Check whether levels are discrete, hub-based, or open-ended.
  6. Read recent player feedback for recurring friction. Look for comments about pacing, control feel, camera behavior, performance, or missing features that the official description does not explain. Treat individual comments as anecdotes and look for repeated patterns.

Keep a short evidence note for each candidate. Record the feature you verified and where you saw it, rather than relying on memory after browsing several pages. If you cannot verify a must-keep trait, mark the candidate as unconfirmed and continue looking instead of assuming the feature exists.

Step 6: Compare the finalists on the experience you actually want

Once you have three or more plausible candidates, compare them using the same axes. These are decision criteria for your search, not a claim that Steam ranks games on every one of them.

Comparison axis What to record Why it can change the match
Core loop What you do repeatedly between story moments A shared genre can hide completely different moment-to-moment play.
Progression Skills, equipment, party growth, choices, crafting, or mastery Progression determines how the game rewards long sessions.
Camera and perspective Fixed, first person, third person, isometric, side scrolling, or top down Viewpoint changes navigation, aiming, spatial awareness, and tension.
Pacing Action frequency, downtime, mission length, and story interruptions The same mechanics can feel different when encounters are constant or widely spaced.
Tone Emotional atmosphere, subject matter, and presentation A mechanical match may still fail if its mood is wrong for you.
Multiplayer needs Solo, local co-op, online co-op, competitive, or companion-based Required player support can determine whether the game is usable at all.
Platform availability Supported device, controller expectations, and edition A strong match is irrelevant if it cannot run on your intended platform.
Cost Current storefront price and any required additional content Price and edition differences affect which candidate is practical to try first.

Use a simple scoring method if you struggle to choose. Give each must-keep trait a value from zero to two: zero for absent, one for uncertain or partial, and two for clearly present. Weight the two most important traits twice. This is your personal decision aid, not a storefront rating, so change the weights when your priorities change.

What to do when the search goes wrong

The results are too broad

Replace a broad genre term with a mechanic, perspective, or structural term. Add one filter at a time and remove titles that fail a must-keep requirement. If the results are still noisy, search a distinctive mechanic in the description field and inspect the tags used by the best matches.

The results are too narrow

Remove a nice-to-have before removing an essential feature. Try synonyms and adjacent subgenres, then search one must-keep trait at a time. A game may use a different label for the same system, so borrow terminology from a promising store page and run a second search.

Recommendations keep returning the new style you dislike

Recommendation systems learn from play history and related behavior, not from your private explanation of why a sequel disappointed you. Stop using the disliked sequel as your only seed. Search directly for the older mechanics, then use those mechanically closer titles as discovery starting points. Keep your must-keep list beside the recommendation feed and reject suggestions that fail it.

New releases are missing

Use tag and description searches and browse new-release discovery in parallel with personalized shelves. The Interactive Recommender description from 2019 identified a lack of player data as a cold-start limitation, so a new title may not appear in a behavior-based recommendation even when its feature set is an excellent match.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A candidate looks right but plays wrong

Recheck the core loop, camera, and pacing rather than the setting or screenshots. If the mismatch is fundamental, remove the candidate. If only one preference is off, label it as an intentional compromise and compare it with another candidate before deciding.

You cannot tell whether a feature is present

Look for a direct statement in the description, screenshots showing the relevant system, or repeated player reports describing it. When evidence remains unclear, keep the candidate in an unconfirmed list rather than treating uncertainty as a match.

A repeatable 20-minute workflow

You can make the process efficient without surrendering accuracy.

  1. Minutes 1–3: write the specification. List three must-keep mechanics, two preferences, and any platform or multiplayer requirement.
  2. Minutes 4–7: run a focused search. Use two or three specific tags or description terms, then apply the narrowest necessary filters.
  3. Minutes 8–11: expand through discovery surfaces. Check More Like This, the Discovery Queue, the recommendation feed, and relevant curator recommendations. Save only titles that pass an initial mechanic check.
  4. Minutes 12–16: inspect store pages. Verify the core loop, camera, progression, player support, screenshots, and platform compatibility.
  5. Minutes 17–19: score finalists. Use the same comparison axes for every candidate and mark uncertain features explicitly.
  6. Minute 20: choose the lowest-risk trial. Prefer the candidate with the strongest evidence for your two most important traits, not the one with the most familiar artwork or the highest number of shared broad tags.

Save your terminology and notes. If the first search fails, you can revise one variable at a time instead of starting from scratch.

How to use the method for different kinds of franchise changes

When the new entry changed combat

Make the combat loop your primary search term. Describe attack rhythm, defensive options, targeting, resource use, and whether encounters are real time or turn based. Treat setting and story as secondary until the controls feel right.

When the new entry changed exploration

Specify level structure, map density, backtracking, secrets, traversal abilities, and puzzle frequency. A game can share the same genre and camera while replacing compact, interconnected spaces with a large checklist-driven world.

When the new entry changed progression

Write down which rewards mattered before: fixed upgrades, randomized equipment, party development, narrative choices, or player mastery. Search for those progression systems directly and verify whether upgrades affect play or are primarily cosmetic.

When the new entry changed tone or pacing

Keep the mechanical requirements, then add atmosphere and pacing terms. Check how often the game interrupts play with dialogue, how long missions last, and whether the emotional tone stays consistent. A mechanically accurate recommendation may still be unsuitable if it delivers the wrong mood.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The standard to use before committing

A recommendation is successful when you can explain exactly why the candidate matches the older experience you miss. You should be able to name the shared mechanics, identify any deliberate compromises, confirm platform and player requirements, and describe what evidence supports each conclusion. If you can only point to a genre label, a familiar setting, or a recommendation shelf, keep searching.

Steam’s search tools and discovery surfaces are most effective when you supply precise language and verify the results yourself. Specific tags can improve similarity signals, personalized recommendations can reveal patterns you would not find manually, and direct searches can cover new or lightly played games that behavior-based systems may overlook. The final match comes from comparing the actual play experience with your original must-keep list.
