Open a fuel-price comparison service or map that covers your area, search from your current location or enter a postcode or suburb, and select the fuel your vehicle needs. Compare the displayed price with the station’s distance or route, check how recently the listing was updated, and factor in any discount you can actually use. The pump price is the final check: coverage and update methods vary, so an app listing is not a guarantee of what you will pay.
Find a comparison service that covers your area
Start with geography, not an app’s name. A service is useful only if it includes stations where you are travelling and the prices for the fuel you need. There is no single source that covers every country, and even services within one country can differ in coverage, reporting rules and update practices.
If you are in the United Kingdom
Fuel Finder is the UK government service that makes fuel prices available to third-party apps and websites. Forecourts covered by the scheme must report price changes within 30 minutes. That reporting requirement gives you a useful basis for comparison, but it does not remove the need to check that the listing matches the pump.
On 8 October 2026, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero announced that Google Maps had started showing near-real-time petrol and diesel prices using Fuel Finder data. The announcement also said Fuel Finder data was already used by Waze, Petrol Prices, the AA, Confused.com and RAC Fuel Watch, and that around 99% of fuel sold on UK roads was reflected in the scheme. Those details describe the UK scheme at the announcement date; integrations and service coverage can change.

These options give UK drivers several ways to see prices, but the best choice depends on how you prefer to search. A map can show prices in the context of a journey; a dedicated comparison service may offer a list or other features. Check that the service is showing the fuel you need and that its listed station is practical to reach. The 99% figure describes the share of fuel sold reflected in the scheme, not a guarantee that every station listing is accurate at the moment you arrive.
If you are in Australia
Australian government consumer guidance recommends checking the tool for your state or territory where one is available. Examples include NSW FuelCheck, which the guidance says also compares ACT prices; FuelCheck TAS; MyFuelNT; and Western Australia’s FuelWatch. Queensland publishes a list of third-party apps and websites that use its reporting data, and South Australia’s consumer agency lists services. Check the local service’s own coverage rather than assuming that an app available nationally has complete data in your town.
The ACCC’s 2024 report describes comprehensive government-run services in Western Australia, New South Wales and the ACT, the Northern Territory, and Tasmania. It describes commercial services such as MotorMouth and PetrolSpy as Australia-wide to the extent possible, while cautioning that many commercial services are not comprehensive. In Victoria, differences in collection methods may affect accuracy or coverage. These distinctions matter: a map with many listings is not necessarily a complete picture of local prices.
When several services are available, start with the relevant state or territory option, then compare it with a commercial service if you want another view. Government reporting schemes and commercial tools may use different price sources, and the ACCC’s description of commercial services does not mean every one provides complete coverage. In Victoria in particular, collection methods can affect the accuracy or coverage of prices, so do not treat a single app’s result as a definitive state-wide ranking.
For other countries or regions
Look for a government consumer or transport agency’s guidance, an official fuel-price reporting service, or a comparison app with explicit local coverage. Confirm that the service includes the towns and station brands you would realistically use. If you cannot establish how a service gets its prices or how broadly it covers the area, treat it as one source to check—not as a definitive ranking of every nearby station.
Compare the price for the fuel your vehicle requires
Search using your current location, or enter a postcode or suburb if you are planning ahead. Then choose the correct fuel type and grade before comparing results. A lower figure for a different fuel is irrelevant, and some vehicles require a particular grade. Check your vehicle’s manual or the label inside the fuel flap if you are unsure.
Comparison tools may show stations in a map, a list, or both. A list can make it easier to scan prices; a map helps show whether the apparent bargain is actually on your route. Check that you are comparing like with like: the same fuel, the same unit of measure, and the price that applies to your purchase rather than a discount you cannot access.
For a fair comparison, use one service and one search area first, then cross-check with another local source if you need more confidence. Avoid comparing a price from one place with a result using a different fuel grade, location radius or unit. If you are comparing across a border or planning a trip in another country, make sure you understand the displayed currency and measurement unit before judging which figure is lower.

Check discounts and eligibility
Some services surface retailer-specific discounts, incentives or loyalty information. A displayed saving may depend on membership, a linked account, a payment method, a promotion, or a minimum purchase. Read the conditions and compare the final price you are eligible to pay. If the discount is not available to you, do not use it to rank that station as cheaper.
Also distinguish the listed pump price from a separate reward or future credit. A discount that applies only after a later transaction may not reduce the amount charged for this fill. Where terms are unclear, compare the ordinary listed price and verify the offer directly with the retailer before making a detour for it.
Decide whether the cheaper station is worth the trip
A low price per litre is only useful if reaching the station makes sense for your journey. Compare distance or route, not just the map pin. A station a short distance away in a straight line may require a longer drive, while one with a slightly higher price may be on the route you were already taking.
Recommended Free Tools
There is no universal detour distance at which a cheaper station stops being worthwhile. The answer depends on how much fuel you buy, the price difference, the route, and the cost of driving farther. For a simple comparison, multiply the price difference per litre by the amount you expect to buy. For example, a hypothetical difference of 5 cents per litre on a 40-litre fill is 200 cents, or $2, before accounting for the extra trip. This is an illustration, not a recommended saving threshold; use your local currency and actual prices.
- Already on the route: A modest price difference may be worthwhile if the station adds little or no extra driving.
- Requires a detour: Compare the extra route with the likely saving on the amount you will buy. A small per-litre gap can add up to only a small total saving.
- Planning a larger fill: The same per-litre difference affects more litres, but the route and any discount conditions still matter.
- Unsure about the total: Prefer a convenient station over treating the cheapest map result as automatically best.
Use the map’s route or driving-distance information rather than judging a station by how close its pin looks. Consider whether the route adds driving in both directions, whether the station is accessible from your side of the road, and whether you would make the trip anyway. These details can change the value of a small price difference, even when the displayed price itself is correct.
The UK government’s 8 October 2026 announcement estimated that comparing prices could save a household with a car around £40 a year. That estimate is a useful indication of potential savings in the UK, not a promise of what any one driver will save. Your result depends on your routes, how often you buy fuel, available local price differences and the size of each fill.
Check how fresh and complete the price information is
Fuel prices can change frequently, and services collect information in different ways. Depending on the place and provider, listings may draw on government transparency schemes, commercial data providers, retailer point-of-sale information or crowdsourced reports. A label such as “real-time” or “near-real-time” does not mean every listing is guaranteed to match the pump at the moment you arrive.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Look for an update time, date or explanation of the data source when the service provides one. A recent timestamp is more useful than an undated price, but it still cannot guarantee that the price has not changed since. If a service does not show freshness information, weigh that uncertainty against how far you would need to travel and how large the expected saving is.

Coverage also affects what a result means. A station missing from a map may be closed, outside the service’s reporting coverage, or simply absent from its data. A cheapest result is therefore the cheapest listed option in that service’s coverage—not necessarily the cheapest station in the area. For a meaningful comparison, cross-check another local source when the result seems surprising or the detour would be substantial.
Price collection methods also explain why two tools can show different figures. A government feed may apply reporting requirements to covered forecourts; a commercial service may combine data from several sources or include user-entered reports. These sources can differ in when a change appears and which stations they include. A disagreement between tools is a reason to check the update information and the station itself, not to assume that one number must be correct.
Use UK and Australian services with the right expectations
What UK Fuel Finder coverage means
The UK’s 30-minute reporting requirement applies to forecourts covered by Fuel Finder and concerns reporting a price change. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero’s 8 October 2026 announcement said around 99% of fuel sold on UK roads was reflected in the scheme. That is a broad scheme-level figure, not a promise that every individual listing is current or that every station is included.

The same announcement estimated that comparing prices could save a UK household with a car around £40 a year. This is the government’s estimated average saving, not a guaranteed result for an individual driver. Your outcome will depend on where you drive, how often you refuel, the price differences available, and whether cheaper stations are practical to reach.
The announcement described Google Maps as showing near-real-time petrol and diesel prices from Fuel Finder data, and said the data was also used by Waze, Petrol Prices, the AA, Confused.com and RAC Fuel Watch. The availability of an integration does not establish that each app presents identical features or coverage. If one service does not show prices for a location, try another listed UK option and check its own details.
Polly Billington, the UK Minister for Energy Consumers, said: “Accessing the cheapest fuel should be simple, which is why it is a gamechanger for near real-time fuel prices to be shown on Google Maps for the first time in the UK, helping drivers to find the best deal and save money at the pump.” Sarah-Jayne Williams, Director of Global Product Partnerships for Geo at Google, said that integrating Fuel Finder data into Google Maps and Waze gives drivers “visibility on nearby pump prices,” helping them make choices for their budgets. These comments describe the UK integration announced on 8 October 2026; the practical check remains the displayed station price.
What Australian service coverage means
Government reporting schemes can make comparisons more comprehensive in the jurisdictions covered by those schemes, but commercial services may combine several sources and have different gaps. The ACCC’s 2024 discussion of Victorian collection methods is a reminder that a service’s apparent national reach does not establish equal accuracy in every state. Check the relevant local government service or reporting information when available.

Separately, 34% said they used a fuel-price app in 2022, versus 19% in 2019 and 8% in 2017. These are survey results for those years, not current or worldwide usage estimates.

The two survey measures are different: the 44% figure covers motorists using fuel-price apps or websites to shop, while the 34% figure refers specifically to using an app. Both show increased reported use across the survey years, but neither tells you whether a particular tool is complete in your location today. For an individual search, local coverage and the freshness of the station listing matter more than how popular fuel-price tools were nationally in earlier years.
A practical search workflow
- Choose a local source. Select a government service, comparison app, website or map that covers the country or region where you will buy fuel.
- Set the search area. Use your current location for a nearby search, or enter a postcode or suburb to plan a stop in advance.
- Select the required fuel. Filter by the vehicle’s fuel type and grade before judging which result is cheapest.
- Compare price and route. Check the listed price against the station’s actual driving distance or route, and compare any discount only if you meet its conditions.
- Review freshness and coverage. Check the timestamp or source details if shown. If no freshness information is available, treat the number as less certain.
- Make the final check at the station. Confirm the price on the pump or roadside sign before filling. If the price is different, decide using the price displayed at the station.
If you use a phone to check prices, set your destination before driving or ask a passenger to handle the search. Do not interact with an app while driving; fuel savings are not worth unsafe phone use.
What to do if the listing and pump price differ
First, rely on the price displayed at the station when deciding whether to fill up. If you are in the UK and an app listing differs from the pump or roadside sign, the government provides a service for reporting a discrepancy to Fuel Finder. Record which station was involved, the date and time, and where you saw the conflicting price. The reporting service allows optional photo or screenshot evidence, which can help document what was displayed.

A screenshot or photo is optional, but can help show what the listing or sign displayed. This creates a clearer report than a general note that the price was wrong.
Elsewhere, use the comparison service’s own reporting or feedback option if available, or check the relevant local authority’s instructions. Do not assume that a single mismatch proves a service is broadly inaccurate; reporting methods and update timing differ, and one listing may lag behind a change.

Is the cheapest result always the cheapest fuel near me?
No. It is the lowest price shown among the results and coverage available to that service. A station may be missing, the listing may not have updated, or the price may apply to a different fuel grade or discount condition.
Does “near-real-time” mean the pump price is guaranteed?
No. The phrase describes how price information is supplied or updated, not a guarantee that a listing will match at the moment of purchase. Check the station’s displayed price before filling.
How much farther should I drive for a lower price?
There is no universal break-even distance. Compare the total saving on the litres you expect to buy with the extra route and any conditions attached to a discount.

The Bottom Line
Use a local service to compare the correct fuel grade, price, route and any discount you can actually claim. Check how fresh and complete the listing is, and confirm the pump or roadside sign before filling. A lower displayed price is only a better deal if the station is practical to reach and the price applies to you.
