How to find free satellite images for a location depends on what you need the imagery to do. Start with NASA Worldview if you want to browse a place and preview imagery. Use USGS EarthExplorer when you need to select and download Landsat scenes, and Copernicus Data Space for Sentinel mission data. The right choice depends on whether you need a quick visual, a downloadable image, or data for analysis—and free access alone does not establish permission to reuse every image.
Choose the right kind of satellite imagery search
“Free satellite images” can mean several different things: a map-like preview to inspect a place, a downloadable satellite scene, or data prepared for analysis. These are not interchangeable. A viewer is usually the most direct route to a visual; a data portal lets you search for particular collections and scenes; a subset or analysis tool can help when you need data for a particular area, period, or layer.
Before searching, decide what you need the image to do. If you only want to look at a location, begin with a visual browser. If you need a file for your own mapping or analysis, use a portal that offers downloadable source data. If you need imagery covering a defined area and time period, consider a search or analysis service that supports those filters. A preview may help you judge whether a date or layer is relevant, but it is not automatically the full-resolution analysis download.

The portals serve different purposes rather than offering one universal “best” image. The imagery available, search controls, and reuse conditions depend on the collection and record you select. A free portal can still contain multiple products with different characteristics and terms.
Find a place in NASA Worldview for a quick preview
Worldview is the simplest starting point when your first question is visual: what does imagery of this area look like, and what dates or layers can I inspect? NASA describes Worldview as a global imagery browser with preview, download, and animation capabilities. The exact interface may change, so treat the steps below as a workflow rather than a promise about button names.
- Search for the area. Look up the place by name, or enter its coordinates if you have them. Coordinates can be useful when a place name is ambiguous, shared by multiple locations, or not a named settlement. If you begin with an address, verify that the map has centered on the correct location.
- Choose an imagery layer. The layer determines what Worldview displays. If you are comparing dates, keep the layer consistent so you are not confusing a change in the display with a change on the ground. Read the layer label and any accompanying description before interpreting colors or patterns.
- Set the date you want to inspect. For a change-over-time question, examine more than one date where imagery is available. A single date answers only what the selected view shows for that time. Record the date you used so another person can repeat the search.
- Preview the result at the location. Check that the displayed map covers the area you meant to search. Zoom out briefly to confirm that you are in the right region, then zoom in to inspect the target. If the result is not useful, adjust the place or coordinates, layer, or date rather than assuming the location has no imagery.
- Use animation when timing matters. Worldview can create animated visualizations, which can make a sequence easier to inspect than isolated stills. An animation remains a visualization; it does not automatically provide the source files or an analysis-ready time series.
- Decide whether a preview is enough. If you only need a visual reference, the browser may answer your question. If you need a downloadable source file or data for analysis, move to an appropriate data portal or analysis service and inspect its collection details.
Worldview is useful for browsing and visualizing, including animated visualizations. That does not mean every preview is an analysis-ready file, nor that every layer has the same characteristics. Check what the selected layer offers before relying on it for measurement or further processing. A screen image can also omit the metadata needed to explain the date, layer, or processing behind what you see.
Download Landsat scenes with USGS EarthExplorer
Use EarthExplorer when your goal is to locate a Landsat scene or another dataset and download it. USGS says Landsat products in the EROS archive have been available for download at no cost since 2008. That statement concerns access to those archive products; it should not be expanded into a claim that every satellite image everywhere is free to download or unrestricted to reuse.
- Define the area of interest. EarthExplorer supports a point or polygon, and also lets you enter an address, ZIP code, or place name. A point is convenient for a single site; a polygon is more appropriate when you need to describe an area rather than a single coordinate. For a large region, a polygon can prevent the search from returning scenes that only touch a small part of your intended study area.
- Set the date range. Choose dates that fit the event or comparison you are investigating. A narrow range is easier to review; a wider range can reveal alternatives when a particular day is unsuitable. Landsat’s long record can help with historical questions, but the presence of a long archive does not guarantee a useful scene on every particular date.
- Select Landsat or another available dataset. Select the collection relevant to your task rather than assuming all datasets represent the same kind of imagery. If you are unsure, check the collection description and record metadata. Do not compare records solely by thumbnail appearance when the products may represent different layers or processing choices.
- Review the matching records. Confirm the displayed area and dates correspond to your intended search. When several records are available, compare their metadata and select the one that fits your question. Check the record date, footprint, collection name, and any quality information supplied by the portal.
- Download the product you need. Check the product description and available files before downloading. A scene record, a visual display, and data prepared for analysis can be different deliverables. Downloading a file at no cost does not mean that every associated file has identical processing, format, or reuse conditions.
- Keep a record of your selection. Save the scene identifier, collection, date, and search area with your project notes. This makes it possible to explain which observation you used instead of referring only to a generic Landsat image.
EarthExplorer is a better fit than a simple visual browser when you need to select among scenes and obtain source data. It is also the more natural route when the place can be represented by a point or polygon and you need a defined date range. The available product details—not the portal’s general free-access status—should guide decisions about analysis and reuse.
USGS describes Landsat as a public archive, and NASA reports systematic global coverage beginning in 1972. That long record is valuable for historical questions, but it is not a guarantee that every scene is cloud-free or equally suitable. Inspect the individual record rather than treating archive age as a quality rating.
Find Sentinel imagery through Copernicus Data Space
For Sentinel mission collections, start with Copernicus Data Space, the official entry point identified for those collections. The available information here establishes its role as a Sentinel access route, but does not provide a definitive comparison of Sentinel and Landsat resolution, exact scene revisit at a location, cloud conditions, or licensing for every collection. Those particulars need to be checked in the current metadata for the collection and image you select.

- Open the Sentinel collection entry point. Begin with Copernicus Data Space rather than assuming a general-purpose map viewer is a substitute for the mission data portal.
- Search the location and time period you need. Narrow the search to your area and relevant dates using the controls available in the portal. Use coordinates or a drawn area when a place name is too broad or ambiguous.
- Inspect the collection and record details. Confirm which Sentinel mission collection and product you are viewing, and read its metadata before comparing it with another source. The mission name alone is not enough to identify the exact product.
- Choose the output for your purpose. If you need a visual, a preview may be sufficient. If you are downloading for analysis, verify that the product and associated information meet your requirements.
- Compare like with like. If you also inspect Landsat, keep the location and date criteria clear and compare the actual records. Avoid drawing a general resolution or freshness conclusion from two unrelated thumbnails.
Do not select a source based on a blanket claim that one mission is always sharper, more current, or better. The exact collection, record, date, and task matter. The cited material does not establish a universal resolution ranking or a guaranteed usable image at a specific place and time.
Use NASA search and analysis tools when the area or period matters
NASA also identifies Earthdata Search and AppEEARS as tools for searching and working with Earth data tied to a location and time. They are worth considering when your task is more specific than simply looking at a map—for example, when you need to find data for a selected area and period or work with particular layers. Their purpose differs from a quick visual preview, so first decide whether you need to inspect imagery, obtain a product, or work with a subset or analysis-oriented data.
- Choose a browser when the main job is to view a place and compare dates or layers visually.
- Choose a data portal when you need to find scene records and download a selected product.
- Choose a search or subset/analysis tool when you need to constrain the data to a location, time period, or layer for further work.
NASA’s Landsat overview distinguishes browsing and previewing from data search, subsetting, and analysis tools. That distinction is practical: finding an attractive preview is not the same task as acquiring the data needed for a reproducible analysis. If your project requires repeatable results, note the portal, collection, date, area definition, and product record rather than saving only a browser screenshot.
Understand what “free” covers
NASA describes Landsat data and science products as publicly accessible and free of charge, and USGS identifies no-cost downloads for Landsat archive products since 2008. These statements describe access to specified public products. They do not turn every image found online into a free, unrestricted asset.
Recommended Free Tools
There are at least three separate questions:
- Can you open or view it? A browser may provide a preview without offering the underlying source product.
- Can you download it? A portal may provide a no-cost download for a particular collection or archive product.
- Can you reuse or redistribute it? This depends on the exact record, collection, and applicable terms.
Keeping those questions separate prevents a common mistake: assuming that because an image appears in a free map viewer, it can automatically be copied into a commercial report, repackaged, or redistributed. Check the record-level information whenever your use goes beyond personal inspection.
Use the historical record and observation interval carefully
Landsat is especially useful when the question involves change over a long period. NASA reports systematic global Earth-observation coverage since 1972. That gives researchers and other users a historical record to investigate, but it does not mean every location has a cloud-free, usable image on every date in the archive.
For more frequent combined observations, NASA reports that the Harmonized Landsat Sentinel-2 (HLS) dataset has a global observation interval of every 1.6 days. This is an interval for the dataset’s global observations, not a promise that a specific location will have a cloud-free usable image every 1.6 days. Check the actual location, dates, and collection metadata before planning around a particular observation.

These two figures answer different questions: Landsat’s “since 1972” describes the beginning of its systematic global coverage, while HLS’s 1.6-day figure describes a global observation interval for a harmonized dataset. Neither figure alone identifies which scene is best for your location or whether it meets your analysis needs. Weather, acquisition timing, the selected layer, and the quality information on the individual record still matter.
Check image terms before you reuse or redistribute a file
Finding a file at no cost is not the same as establishing that it can be reused in any way. USGS warns that licensing restrictions for commercial satellite imagery can vary by image. Before publishing, redistributing, or using a downloaded image commercially, inspect the terms attached to the exact image or dataset and follow any applicable conditions.
- Check the record or collection’s terms rather than relying only on the fact that a portal allows free access.
- Distinguish official public archive products from commercial imagery that may be subject to image-specific licensing.
- Confirm the conditions for your intended use, especially if you plan to redistribute the image or include it in commercial work.
- Keep the source record and date with the image so you can answer questions about provenance later.
The sources identified here establish a no-cost download history for USGS Landsat archive products and a licensing caveat for commercial satellite images. They do not establish one blanket reuse license for every dataset in every portal.
Common pitfalls when searching for free imagery
Confusing a basemap with a satellite scene
A familiar map display may combine imagery, labels, boundaries, and other layers. If you need a particular date or source, use a portal that identifies the collection and record rather than assuming that a general map view is the downloadable scene.
Assuming the newest-looking view is the newest acquisition
A preview can be convenient for browsing, but the date and product metadata are what establish which observation you are viewing. Check the stated date instead of judging currency from appearance.
Treating an observation interval as a guarantee
The HLS figure of every 1.6 days is a global observation interval. It does not promise a clear, usable image for your exact location on every interval. Inspect individual records and conditions.
Comparing thumbnails from different products
Different layers, collections, and display settings can make images look different. Read the collection and record information before concluding that one mission or product is universally better.

Downloading without preserving context
A file separated from its scene identifier, date, area, and collection is difficult to reproduce or explain. Save those details alongside the download.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot an unhelpful search
The place search returns an unexpected area
Try a more specific place name or use coordinates. In EarthExplorer, define a point or polygon if a place-name search does not describe your intended area. Verify the result on the map before moving to date and dataset selection.
You can see an image but cannot find the file you need
You may be looking at a visual preview rather than a downloadable source product. Use a data portal when you need to select and download a scene, or a search/subset tool when your requirements concern a particular area, time period, or layer.
The selected date does not give a useful view
Try a different date or inspect other available records for the area. The existence of a global archive or a stated observation interval does not guarantee a usable observation on a specific day at a specific location. Check the individual record rather than inferring coverage from a program-wide figure.
You are unsure which collection to choose
Start from the task: visual inspection, downloadable scene selection, or analysis. Then read the collection and product metadata for the candidate record. The available source information does not support a universal Landsat-versus-Sentinel resolution ranking, so compare the actual collections you intend to use instead of relying on a general slogan.
You need to publish or redistribute the image
Pause before reuse and inspect the terms for the exact record. Free portal access does not by itself settle permission to redistribute or use every image commercially; commercial image licensing can vary by image.
