Start with the official Skill India Digital Hub (SIDH) free-course catalog and SWAYAM’s course search. Filter by the skill you need, then open the individual course page and verify its provider, current enrollment status, language, duration, prerequisites, assessment method, and certificate terms. “Free course” usually means the learning content costs nothing; an optional certificate examination may still have a fee.

This guide shows how to find suitable government-supported online training without relying on stale search snippets. Catalogs change, so use the live listing for enrollment instructions and confirm whether a certificate will be accepted by the employer, college, or other institution that matters to you.

Start with the two main official catalogs

Skill India Digital Hub (SIDH)

Skill India Digital Hub is a government-backed platform owned by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. Its free online-course catalog brings together training in areas such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, data science, cybersecurity, digital marketing, entrepreneurship, cloud computing, coding, and UI/UX.

The catalog also contains vocational subjects that are not digital skills. Do not assume every result is relevant to a technology goal: read the title, description, provider, and skill category before enrolling. The platform describes multilingual access and a broad learner audience, so language is worth checking even when the subject looks suitable.

SIDH listings can show the course title, provider, language, duration, credit information, and free status. Those fields are more useful than a search-engine description because they belong to the current course record. A listing that is visible may still have closed enrollment or changed terms, so open it and look for the current enrollment control.

SWAYAM

SWAYAM is an initiative of the Ministry of Education and is another official route for skill-based learning. Its FAQ says anyone can join an online course; there is no general age rule or platform-wide eligibility requirement. An instructor may nevertheless recommend prior knowledge for a particular class, so read the course page rather than treating “anyone can join” as proof that a beginner will be ready.

SWAYAM describes courses as combinations of video lectures, downloadable or printable readings, self-assessment tests or quizzes, and an online discussion forum. These features help you judge how a course is delivered, but the exact mix can differ by course. The course page is the authority.

How to search for a suitable course

  1. Define the job you want the skill to do. Write a specific outcome such as “learn spreadsheet analysis for an office role,” “build a first Python project,” “understand cybersecurity fundamentals,” or “learn the basics of generative AI.” A precise outcome produces better search terms than the broad phrase “computer course.”
  2. Open the official catalog. Use the SIDH free online-course catalog for Skill India offerings and SWAYAM’s own course search for Ministry of Education courses. Avoid choosing from an aggregator page when the official listing is available.
  3. Search by topic and level. Try combinations such as “data science beginner,” “cybersecurity fundamentals,” “digital marketing,” “cloud basics,” “coding,” “UI/UX,” or “AI for educators.” Add “self-paced” if your schedule is irregular. Search wording is a starting point, not evidence that a course is currently open.
  4. Open each promising result. Record the course owner or provider, language, duration, prerequisites, enrollment status, assessment format, and certificate conditions. A title can conceal a substantial difference in level or workload.
  5. Separate learning access from credential access. Look for separate statements about course fees, assessment fees, certificate eligibility, exam dates, and delivery mode. Never infer that a certificate is free simply because the lessons are free.
  6. Check the date-sensitive details immediately before enrolling. Catalogs are dynamic. Confirm that enrollment is open, the course still has the advertised duration and language, and the current page still describes the same fee and assessment terms.
  7. Save the official course page and your enrollment evidence. Keep the URL, course title, provider, enrollment date, completion record, and any payment receipt. This helps if a listing changes before you finish.

Compare courses on the facts that affect your decision

Use a small comparison sheet instead of choosing the first result. The following fields cover the differences that matter most.

Comparison point What to verify on the live listing Why it matters
Skill and level Subject, learning outcomes, beginner or advanced assumptions Prevents a course with an attractive title from being too basic or too demanding.
Provider Named ministry, institution, company, university, or training partner Shows who created or delivers the material and whom to contact about course-specific issues.
Learning fee Whether access to the lessons is free and whether any charge appears at enrollment “Free course” should refer to the learning component, not an assumed all-inclusive credential.
Certificate fee Exam price, payment deadline, eligibility, and whether the certificate is optional Lets you budget accurately and decide whether the credential is worth pursuing.
Language Teaching language, subtitles, readings, and assessment language A course can be technically suitable but unusable if you cannot follow its instruction or test.
Duration and schedule Advertised hours, weekly timetable, start and end dates, or self-paced access period Helps you match the workload to work, school, or family commitments.
Prerequisites Required education, software knowledge, mathematics, programming, or prior courses Reveals whether you need a foundation course first.
Assessment Quizzes, assignments, projects, proctored examination, pass mark, and attempts Shows how completion is measured and what effort is required for a certificate.
Availability Open enrollment, cohort dates, seat limits, or a closed listing Stops you from planning around a course that is no longer accepting learners.
Recognition How the intended employer, college, or institution treats the credential A government-supported course is not automatically accepted everywhere.

What “free” means on government learning platforms

Free learning is not always free certification

On SWAYAM, joining and studying a course are free. A learner who wants a certificate generally has to take a proctored examination for a nominal fee. SWAYAM says the course page states the specific certificate eligibility rules. Its information about certificate examinations says they are held in person at designated centers on specified dates, so the exam can also involve travel and scheduling beyond the online lessons.

SIDH course records may describe an offering as free, but certificate arrangements can differ by provider and course. Read the individual listing for any assessment or credential charge. If a price is not stated, do not assume that the certificate costs nothing; look for a current fee or contact route on the official page.

Check the total commitment

Even when tuition is zero, a credential may require a paid exam, a particular test center, identity verification, assignments, or a deadline. Write down the learning cost, certificate cost, travel requirement, and time requirement as separate items. This prevents a surprise at the end of an otherwise free course.

Examples currently shown in the SIDH catalog

The SIDH catalog snapshot checked in October 2026 illustrates the range of subjects and workloads. These are examples, not promises that the same courses will remain open or retain the same terms.

Course example Provider or route shown Language Advertised duration How to use the example
Introduction on Generative AI – Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Microsoft English 15 hours A short introductory option for a learner testing whether generative AI is the right direction.
SOAR – AI to be Aware Microsoft English 20 hours Useful as an example of a foundational AI pathway; verify the current course page and credential terms.
AI/ML certificate course Reliance Foundation Skilling Academy Not stated in the catalog summary 150 hours A substantially longer commitment than the introductory examples; check prerequisites and assessment details.
Generative AI Google Cloud course through FutureSkills Prime Not stated in the catalog summary 10 hours A compact course example; confirm the current provider, language, and certificate conditions before enrolling.

The catalog’s duration field is not a universal measure of difficulty. A 10-hour introduction and a 150-hour certificate course may both appear in a digital-skills search, but they serve different goals. Compare outcomes and assessment, not hours alone.

Government-supported AI learning pathways

SOAR

The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship described the initial SOAR program as four online, self-paced, NSQF-aligned foundational courses: AI to be Aware, AI to Acquire, AI to Aspire, and AI for Educators. A later ministry release reported that the program expanded to 50 AI and AI-application-oriented qualifications.

Those statements describe the program at particular points in time. Use the current SIDH listing to determine which SOAR courses are available now, who may enroll, how long each takes, and whether a certificate or assessment has a separate requirement. Do not treat the expansion figure as proof that every qualification is currently open.

YUVA AI for ALL

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology’s 2025 launch release described YUVA AI for ALL as a free, self-paced 4.5-hour foundational AI course. The release said the initiative aimed to empower 1 crore (10 million) citizens.

The 1-crore figure is a stated target, not a measured completion, placement, or learning-outcome statistic. Check the live official course page for current availability, enrollment steps, language, and certificate terms before relying on it as your chosen course.

Understand the FutureSkills Prime incentive distinction

The myScheme listing for the FutureSkills Prime Incentive Program describes both free and paid course pathways. Its incentive provisions apply only under stated conditions; they do not make every course on the platform free.

One listed free-pathway condition gives a learner 180 days after certification to enroll in a qualifying paid course, subject to the scheme’s fee threshold and other rules. Other pathways require successful completion of a course and its assessment. Because eligibility, qualifying courses, and thresholds can change, read the current scheme terms and the individual course price before paying or planning around an incentive.

Choose a route by your goal

Your goal Best starting point What to prioritize
First exposure to a digital subject Short SIDH or SWAYAM introductory course Plain-language outcomes, low prerequisite load, manageable duration, and a chance to sample the subject before committing.
Structured academic-style study SWAYAM Weekly schedule, readings, quizzes, discussion support, examination dates, and the certificate rule.
Job-oriented vocational upskilling SIDH catalog Provider, practical outcomes, project or assessment format, language, and whether the target employer recognizes the credential.
Foundational AI literacy SOAR or YUVA AI for ALL listing Current availability, self-paced access, level, duration, and whether the course is awareness-focused or skills-focused.
A credential for academic or workplace use Either platform, after checking recognition Certificate eligibility, exam conditions, issuing organization, and written confirmation from the evaluating institution.

Enrollment workflow: from search result to confirmed learner

  1. Open the course’s official detail page. Do not enroll from a third-party summary if the official listing is available.
  2. Read the eligibility and prerequisite section. Note software, mathematics, programming, language, education, or prior-course requirements.
  3. Confirm availability. Look for an active enrollment or application control, a start date, or a clear self-paced access period. If the page shows a closed cohort, search for a newer listing rather than assuming the old one will reopen.
  4. Check the fee wording. Record whether the lessons are free, whether an assessment or proctored exam costs money, and when payment is due.
  5. Create or use the platform account. Enter your name consistently if you expect a completion record or certificate. Use an email address and phone number that you can access throughout the course.
  6. Complete the enrollment confirmation. Save the confirmation screen or email, course identifier, start date, and support instructions.
  7. Read the first module and assessment calendar immediately. Early deadlines, identity checks, project submissions, or exam registrations can determine whether you remain eligible for a certificate.
  8. Store completion documents. Keep the certificate file, score or grade, issue date, and the official verification method. If an employer asks whether the credential is genuine, these details are more useful than a screenshot of a search result.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Choosing from a search snippet

Search snippets can show an old duration, an outdated fee, or a course that is no longer accepting learners. Always open the official detail page and check the current status.

Assuming a government label guarantees recognition

Government backing establishes the platform or program’s origin; it does not guarantee that every employer, university, recruiter, or licensing body will award credit for every course. Ask the institution that will evaluate your certificate before paying an exam fee.

Confusing awareness with employable proficiency

A short AI-literacy course can be a sensible first step, but it is not automatically equivalent to a project-based data-science, cybersecurity, or programming qualification. Compare learning outcomes, practice work, and assessment depth.

Ignoring language and accessibility

Check the language of videos, readings, quizzes, and the certificate exam. A platform may support multiple languages while a particular course remains English-only.

Planning around an example course

Named courses and durations are snapshots. If an example has closed, search the same skill category for a current alternative and repeat the comparison rather than relying on an old announcement.

Paying before checking the scheme rule

An incentive or “free pathway” may require certification, successful assessment, a qualifying paid course, a time window, or another condition. Read the current scheme page and the course’s own price together.

How to judge certificate value

Start with the person or organization that will make the decision. Ask a prospective employer whether it recognizes the issuing platform and whether it wants a certificate, a portfolio, a particular qualification framework, or demonstrated skills. Ask a college or training institution whether the course carries credit and what documentation it needs.

For SWAYAM, recognition can vary across institutions and organizations. A certificate may document that you met the platform’s stated requirements without guaranteeing admission, academic credit, hiring preference, or a salary outcome. Treat the certificate as one part of evidence alongside projects, assessments, and relevant experience.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When recognition matters, retain the course outline as well as the certificate. The outline records the syllabus, duration, assessment method, and issuing body at the time you studied; those details can be difficult to recover after a catalog page changes.

A practical checklist before you click Enroll

  • The course is listed on the official SIDH or SWAYAM page.
  • The skill and level match your intended outcome.
  • The provider is identified and acceptable for your use case.
  • Enrollment is currently open.
  • Language, duration, schedule, and prerequisites fit your circumstances.
  • Learning access is free, and any exam or certificate fee is recorded separately.
  • The assessment format and certificate eligibility are clear.
  • You know whether a proctored exam requires travel to a designated center.
  • The employer, college, or institution that matters to you has been asked about recognition.
  • You have saved the live course page and enrollment confirmation.

The Bottom Line

For free government-supported digital learning in India, begin with SIDH and SWAYAM, then decide from the live course page—not the title or search snippet. Verify availability, prerequisites, language, workload, assessment, and certificate cost separately; a free course does not automatically mean a free certificate or universal recognition.
